Wow. I met him at an airport in Atlanta. He was late for a flight but still stopped to talk to me and signed an autograph. It's the only autograph I have ever gotten.
I don't think he had ever forgotten his humble beginnings. Arriving in America from the Bahama's with nothing, then caught the bug for acting, and then...., well, we know the rest.
Many people don't seem to understand something here. From what I understand about Sidney Poitier, he has always been aware of, and strove for excellency of 'character'- not for an award. That's what the current generation doesn't seem to get. I hear many people speak of getting college degrees as if that is a substitute for having a morally sound character or solid home training. Remember, a college degree will get you to a lofty position, but you need good character to stay there.
I saw Lillies Of The Field a couple of years ago. Of course, I knew who Poitier was, because I loved Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, but I never really saw him until Lillies, and like a lot of films at the time, it says something without saying anything at all. And his performance says " We may come from different places, faiths, and backgrounds, but we are all the same and deserve the same respect and dignity." and that was powerful in a time of great social & political change in 1963.
he must be an amazing actor to win an oscar in the 60's while their were plenty of deserving actors of all races at this time but due to politics, for him to win, just amazing
OMG I SAW SIDNEY POITIER IN AN AIRPORT ONCE IN EUROPE AND OMG. HE WAS SOOOOOOOOO NICE AND FRIENDLY. he was NOT full of himself and when i told him i loved his movies he just smiled and said thank you and u can tell he REALLY mean it. i LOVE him

I really don't get this. Why does 'African American history' or similar always find it's way into a congratulatory remark? He is a fine actor and he got his reward. What has his colour got to do with any of this?

Should have gotten a couple more in the 60's as well. In the Heat of the Night was a tour de force on his part(and Rod Steiger).

A Deeply Intelligent and Riveting actor who rightly deserves his status as an Icon of American Cinema.

Well deserved Oscar!
In memory of Sidney Potier
a legend
He is so mild manner .
Because back in that period African Americans were treated poorly and had Jim Crows laws which ended in 1965.
Finally, it was real. A guy from nowhere. No color. On stage. Done deal.
