"I'm a good person." That's what we all should strive to be. What a great way to live life. Always striving to be a better person than you were the day before.
Proof that one person can make a difference. Thank you to that man that taught him to read! Thank you to Mr. Poitier!! If only all people could be good people.
Extraordinary man and inspiring interview. The story of the man who taught Sidney Poitier to read was so endearing and a testament that one person's kindness can have immeasurable impact. Sidney Poitier certainly payed it forward.
And just think if that man had never taken the time to teach Poitier to read, we never would have had Poitier the actor who left such an impactful body of work
Kindness. What I once learned from Talmud cited on "The list of Schlindler" book: IF you save one life, you will have saved the whole humanity. The kindness of that man made it possible that Sidney kept on having faith on himself as well in the mankind.
And when he declared he’s “a good person” he is a good person forever, in its purest definition of good. When I die I want to be able to declare I am a good person in clear conscience.

When Sydney's eyes filled with tears remembering how he learned to read, you would have to be heartless not to choke up with him. What a man. A class act. Rest in peace Sir.
As a first generation American of Jamaican descent, having experienced similar circumstances as Sydney Poitier, his life, class, resiliency and particularly his purposeful life has inspired my life. His legacy will live on, now more than ever.
Sidney Poitier was not only a brilliant actor, activist, and a man of incredible grace, He is our hero, our guiding light who lit up our lives with infinite love and wonder. His smile was healing, his hugs the warmest refuge, and his laughter was infectious.” RIP Sidney, we will always love you..
Mr. Poitiier's presence in a film elevated it into a memorable experience- destined to be a classic film.. I know he took on roles that revolved around race relations, but he always transcended it. He opened alot of hearts & minds & eyes of people who never had known anyone who looked like him at a time when a giant mirror was being held up & barriers were being lifted. Right man for the time. RIP, Mr. Poitier. Job well done. A life well lived.
I just watched "Lillies of the Field" for the very first time last evening. As an aficionado of film history, I somehow had never seen it and thought it was a movie that I should watch. After all, Sidney Poitier won the Academy Award for his performance. Well, I can honestly say that I seldom have seen a movie where actors do more with less. It is the very definition of subtlety. So much is communicated with the simple movement of the face. The actress who plays the Mother Superior is impeccable in her performance as well. I am so grateful to Mr. Poitier for his unyielding integrity in each performance.
I watched Lilies of the Field with my Dad when I was around 12 years old. It impacted me then and every time I have watched it since it has impacted me. And like you alluded to it’s because of the acting. Poitier’s other film that strongly affected me was Patch of Blue. Again the acting is superb.
You sum the film up so well. It is an unusual film. It could have been about race and/or religion, but instead was about a man named Homer Smith. Wonderful, simple movie.
@@mikenaughton4298 No. It was definitely about overcoming racial and religious divides but, as Ryan says, those themes don't overwhelm the film due to the subtle brilliance of the likes of Lilia Skala and Sir Sidney.
When I was teaching high school my students read the book to show with love and then we watch the movie that was in the 1980s in California. I hope some of them remember that and realize what a blessing what a role model this wonderful man was
Rest in heavenly peace to one of the most amazing, trailblazing, well respected actors of our time. He opened doors, set trends and paved the way for so many generations. He will be greatly missed.
Some people told me that Ms Suzy Lucy might move to another planet. The temperature on Saturn 🪐 is minus 300 degrees. Otherwise I'm really going to miss Ms Suzy 😂😃 Lucy. I promise ❤️ ☺️ that I won't laugh
Sidney Poitier was the epitome of elegance and dignity. His legacy is unparalleled. He was the standard of a man for me and my girlfriends growing up. Clearly, we were set up to be disappointed🤦🏾♀️ Who was gonna be Sidney!?! Take your Rest Sir Sidney Poitier.❤️🕊
I had a friend who's parents lived in Harlem in the early days. Her father was spending time getting to know the jazz scene and later became a well known disc jockey. Her mother got to know Sidney Poitier. He was just a kid that would flirt with her in a friendly manner. I never really knew how much of it was true but after seeing this it seems likely that it really happened. He was there after all. A remarkable guy with great vision and integrity.
I am always saddened by how appreciative of someone only when he/she is gone. I have been moved and appreciative of Sydney poitier achievements over the years even as I was 25 years when he first made an impact into my life. My love for him and what he achieved under difficult situations and circumstances and times leaves me speechless. He will forever live in my heart. Will remember him in particular for his role in " Guess who is coming to dinner" and other movie roles as well as his autobiography which I read a while ago and will go back to it again now that he is gone. My only consolation is that at age 94 " what am I asking for from GOD?" He lived a good and productive life to the age of 94- RIP brother and grandpa will love u always. U will always have a special place in my heart. Thanks To family I mourn with u. He was the best especially given the times. Am mourning with u. R I.P big brother u will always have a special place in my heart.
As a Bahamian, I’m very proud of all Sidney Poitier accomplished. He inspired me during my youth. He gained my respect for his uncompromising standards. He literally climbed from the bottom to the top of his profession, by discipline and through hard work. He hope he will inspire many marginalized young people to start what they are and pursue Excellence.
I’m of Bahamian descent (Bosfield) and from Miami he had a large family in Overtown my Mom grew up with his cousins. We are very proud of him and his Poitier family.
that moved me to tears. As have quite a few of Sidneys performances... RAISIN IN THE SUN, THE DEFIANT ONES, A PATCH of BLUE. An amazing person and actor. Losing Cicely Tyson and now Poitier .. both such irreplaceable treasures! Goodnight Sir with love! RIP
Wow.. someone in Hollywood that has not sold his soul for money. What a great person he was. Never lost his moral compass during his life. Heaven has gained an angel for sure .

Wonderful interview and he says "I am a good person" oh dear Sydney you are a legend and that palm reader was very accurate when she said "he will walk with kings".

One of the Earth's greatest actors, and I say Earth's because no matter what anyone tells you, you were born on the Earth and therefore Earthlings. They call me Mr. Tibbs wonderful movie with a wonderful plot, To Sir with love, another excellent movie with a great message for young people, Guess who's coming to dinner, excellent vision for the future of our Earth and humanity. Thank you Mr. Sidney Poitier for all your wonderful work, Rest In Peace.
It's unfortunate that he was criticized for a lack of "purity" in his choses of characters he chose to play by some in the black community. Entertainment is a market place where you can get any type of character you like. Sidney Poitier chose to play men who were moral, educated and exemplary in their examples and thus setting an example of what is possible for so many in the inner city communities.
I am a White Guy and my entire life I have always wanted to be just like Mr. Sidney Poitier. One of the Great actors and human beings of all time.. Rest in Peace good sir. We must all strive every day to live up too and by the stellar example you have set.
I saw "Lilies Of The Fields" in first run in 1963 when I was 9 years old. I fell in love with Sidney Poitier and the movie. I have been captivated by him until his dying day. RIP
Sidney Poitier, you defied all odds and were one of the best, iconic, groundbreaking actors of all time. I grew up watching his movies, with my family and he was one of our favorites. While you are in the afterlife, may you see a patch of blue or walk through the lilies of the field. My final message is goodbye, 'To Sir, with Love'.
My mother would make me and my brothers watch his movies when they were on. She held Sidney Poitier up as a shining example of what a proud black man looked like. Growing up in 1960’s Deep South Mississippi as a child wasn’t easy. l recall my mother talking about “In The Heat Of The Night”, especially the scene in which Sidney slaps the bigoted white plantation owner Endicott after getting slapped first. Unthinkable that a black man would do that in Mississippi and live to tell it. I didn’t understand! All that changed as l got older and experienced racial discrimination firsthand, had fist fights with whites because of my blackness and saw the movie as an adult. “Mama, I fully understand now.” I now remember telling her once. And she knew l got it! Sidney Poitier demanded respect and got it! I’m a fan for life. What a great black man!!!!! Rest well, Sidney….😔🕊
I saw Lillies of the Field when it was first shown and I and everybody I knew fell in love with the film and with him. For years it hasn't been on television or available in England but shortly before his death it was shown and it was as wonderful as I had always remembered it. Sidney Poitier dignified and graced every film he was in and he will always be remembered and missed.
The Jewish man was either an angel, Cohen or Levy etc.. These are direct descendants of the most powerful sages and a blessing from them can change life. I had the same exact experience and busted into tears when he was telling the story.
This beautiful man was given a chance by another beautiful man.The ability to read and write is key to all things human and divine.I urge everyone to consider tutoring immigrants or anyone who is struggling to read and write as I did in the lower East side of New York City through the public libraries. Its one of the bright spots in my life.Imagine someone faking reading a newspaper on a train heading to work as a janitor just to appear to fit in with everyone else and you are the one who helped them become something great. What a gift. What can be more important than being a good person? Rest in wonderful sleep Mr. Tibbs.
I couldn’t stop sobbing laying on my kitchen floor right when I read the news. Was even supposed to pick up my little boy from day care at 4 that day but I just couldn’t and couldn’t even take calls. He stayed at one the workers house for two nights since they couldn’t reach so now everything is fine. THATS how much I love him
I doubt you left your son with a “worker” and they couldn’t contact you for “2 nights”. If you had done so the daycare should have called child protection services, it would have been their duty as you had abandoned your child. I call bs on your story.
@@Bluesbabesrv it’s a very expensive center and they understand parents go through emotional times too especially me. They know I love my son. It was no big deal.
Love him. That's the of a true Carribbean man. Propper, knows himself and don't let what others say about you bother you. I know who I am he said. Gone but not forgotten.
Sir Sidney Poitier will always remain a true Gentleman in our minds and hearts forever. I have been a fan of his movies since I was a teenage babysitter staying up late and watching older TCM movies in the 70's To Sir with Love & "Lillies of the Field" "A Patch of Blue" are some of my all time favorite vintage movies along with "Guess who's coming to Dinner" I just seen a good actor who had such Class and elegance especially for a male actor. How could you not admire this Legend. May he Rest in Peace with our King of Kings where he is loved and cherished always. God Bless his Family and Thank you for sharing him with us all
To the Jewish man's memory who taught him how to read... thank you sir. He did not waste or take for granted your gift of time. We are all now the more richer for both of your efforts.
A nice kind, old Jewish man, a waiter where Poitier worked as a dish washer, helped teach him learn to read #4:59, helping Poitier every night, at that point in this interview, Poitier tears up thinking back at this old white Jewish man, an old waiter teaching him night after night when the place closes, yes teaching him to read, just because the old man liked this young fellow. Poitier never for git this act of kindness that changed his life. RIP.

When someone mentions the name Sidney Poitier, the words "dashing", "classy" and "sophisticated" come to mind. He seemed to always hold himself to a higher standard. He addressed civil rights and prejudice in a way that made you understand rather than getting up in your face and slapping you with it. He navigated Hollywood in a day and age when there were still Jim Crowe laws and segregation and never let being a black man in a white industry get in his way. Every performance he gave was absolute perfection. Never played the victim or wallowed in self-pity because the world often saw him for the color of his skin rather than the content of his character. He persevered and pushed forward. He conducted himself in such a way that you forgot he was black, you didn't see his blackness--you saw a man who possessed a rare and special talent. He was the definition of the word "Star". He will be sorely missed for being that beacon of light. Mr. Poitier, may you rest in peace. Now the angels get to see how talented you are!
He Was, To Me, The Greatest Actor in History Because he Set A Standard Of Acting For All Actors Refusing to Act How Hollywood Expected them to!!

Hi Malcolm Taylor. I sent you a reply did you get it? Or is this site censoring comments.
Marlene Stewart, l never saw it…
I saw Lillies of the Field when it was first shown and I and everybody I knew fell in love with the film and with him. For years it hasn't been on television or available in England but shortly before his death it was shown and it was as wonderful as I had always remembered it. Sidney Poitier dignified and graced every film he was in and he will always be remembered and missed.
what an incredibly remarkable man. He will be missed greatly
The story about the Jewish man teaching him to read..... 😭
That was an amazing act of human selflessness....it sounds like it was a part of a great movie in itself ...RIP
The Jewish man was either an angel, Cohen or Levy etc..
These are direct descendants of the most powerful sages and a blessing from them can change life.
I had the same exact experience and busted into tears when he was telling the story.
They called him MR. POITIER.....What a long, long journey to this moment; a Gentleman to the very end. SIP, Mr. Poitier. 🤲🏽🙏🏽💝 You've done well.
THATS how much I love him
Wow! I feel for your son that a dead man you never met took presidence over him 😳😤
@@GreenWitch1 are you b really judging how a mother deals with her own grief? I HAVE MY OWN LIFE.
@@Bluesbabesrv Right? I agree. Someone needs everything to be about her, nevermind her young son 🤔
I tear up every single time when dear Sidney tells the story about the elderly Jewish waiter teaching him to read. So, so inspiring.
Brilliant Actor who did what was right. We need more actors like Sidney Poitier. The man who helped him learn to read gave us Sidney Poitier !
He was such a great person, actor we lost him way too soon 💔 Love you Sydney ♥️
God Bless his Family and Thank you for sharing him with us all
There are certain people in this world when they talk, you listen. Mr. Poitier is one of them. A class act!!!
To the Jewish man's memory who taught him how to read... thank you sir. He did not waste or take for granted your gift of time. We are all now the more richer for both of your efforts.
Indeed he was a good person. May his soul RIP
RIP.
I fell in love w him in To Sir, I was 6. I knew even then that his character and caliber of man would far surpass any person after
He's in my top 5 of actors of all time.
Every African-American actor from 1955 on owes him their careers. Broke the ground for serious parts. RIP
You can't be that serious, their was plenty of blacks getting job, because of their talent, not because of him
Very good interviewer Leslie. Love Mr. Poitier. Thanks for this.
Beauty and excellence personified❤
Thank you, Sir🌷

I say that the man who helped him to read is the great man.
Loved him and his films. I am in the process of watching them again.
My condolences to his family.
May he rest in peace.
