    FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE COMMENT SECTION: Many of you are writing about Wong Jack-man, but this clip is Wan Kam-leung talking about his master, the legendary Wong Shun-leung. Many Kung Fu people share the last/family name Wong, yes, but there is a huge difference between Shunleung, Jackman and Feihung. They have all the same last name but very different given/first names.

    a good story about the teacher (Wong Shun Leung because, technically, Bruce Lee learned Wing Chun more with Wong than with Yip Man) and student (Bruce Lee). They are two of the best street fighters (or rooftop fighters) that ever lived.

    I visited Master Wen Kan Leung on 2012/11/23 without appointment. I told him I learned a bit of LoManKam and William Cheung WC. I kindly showed me his thinking of correct stand and punch. He asked and I did punched his stomach as hard as I can 5 punches, he didn't feel anything. Then he punched me while I was holding a sand bag, I almost fly off the ground. He said use no power totally relax, then all pier upon impact. He is a wonderful SiFu.

      That he could withstand your punch and the reason he has so much power in his own hands, is thanks to his Chow Gar training and not because of Wing Chun. Southern Praying Mantis made him a famous Wing Chun sifu.

    There is a similar incident that is described in one of Jessie Glover's books. Bruce Lee describes to Glover that the other individual involved is Ip Man's assistant. Basically the same thing happened when Lee tried to kick him as well. BL was new to Wing Chun at this particular time. Lee had previously trained in Hung Gar. This particular assistant was never identified in the book, however, Wong Shun Leung's name is mentioned quite often in the book. It might be two different incidents sense it seems that the incidents occured at two different occasions.

    IF Bruce lee and Jack Man Wong landed kicks or punches, not one of them would have had lived being they were both masters. Seeing Lee s amazing techniques, Bruce would have won because he was too fast for anyone! Still king of the arts - no one today cannot match his skills!

    Most westerners I come across, even many chinese don't appreciate the meaning of the term Sifu and how it relates to the " master~disciple" relationship. In fact sifu means more than father it also means master teacher. Like jdiddy I usually only take kung fu lessons from Chinese masters because to me it's more than just fighting. There's philosophical, historical and cultural elements which need to be preserved and passed on. This is what motivated Bruce Lee. In the Tao De JIng it says...

  • @MERVILLE3

    WSL was a fighter first and foremost. He wa never a "slave" to the art and thus it is natural that he used wider punches. I am pretty sure that there is a video on RUclips of him explaining it.
    Unless one is fighting someone with a very tight structure, Pak mei or bamboo mantis style for example, there is no need to be too tidy in your strikes.
    If Bruce was using big kicks, why would WSL be using tidy yat jic punches?

  • @pascodavid
    @pascodavid 12 дней назад

    WSL taught Bruce after BL stopped prating with GM IP Man. They had a close friendship. They may of had a spar an exchange but not a real fight. I would say WSL was gifted at Wing Chun and Bruce was talented all-round.

    Yes Bruce did openly challenge anyone in the bay area & I did read Showdown in Oakland which is supposed to become a movie soon I hear.Mr Jack Man regrets to this day having gone down there to fight him.The only one who says the fight was a draw is Wong Jack Man.According to Mr Wing there were 14 people present at the fight.Most were Probably Lee's students .The rest were Wong & the elders who accompanied him.In a rare interview that WJM did for kung fu mag back in the 80's he addmitted that

  • @HadouGun

    It should say "One of the best" not "The best", because David Cheung recieved a personal stroke from Wong Shun Leung signifying his hope and trust in David's Wing Chun ability to further the future of Wing Chun. That's more than enough of a solid recommendation of "Best" from Wong himself. However lets be lenient to all parties, Wan Kam and David are both "one of the best" until we actually prove it. (even though the stroke is proof still)

    I entered in Wong Jack Man's name just to see if he had any videos on YT. Some viewers might've been confused by this video. He is talking about Wong Shun Leung not WJM. It is stated in one of Jesse Glover's books that Bruce Lee commented that "the old master was holding out on him". That Wing Chun has a method of "tying up the legs". A discovery that perhaps occurred while Lee attempted to kick Yip Man during chi sao.

    • @glensmith143
      @glensmith143 7 лет назад +2

      Ip didn't hold anything back, he simply wasn't there long enough and missed many classes. Only a few students were taught 'legs'. It came after knife and pole. There are probably more, but I know of only two who were taught the complete system with legs, by Ip Man. Chow Tze Chuen and his private student, Duncan Leung. This not only included the tripodal sets [with three hights] but the Moifa as well. CTZ was in Wingchun Illustrated a couple months ago in an article about Moifa and in the picture [1950's] to his right is Duncan.By looking at his lineage chart, even William Cheung was unaware of the completeness of Ips leg training.Also, Bruce was only taught SLT, a few drills and about half the Wooden Man before his Sihings had him booted for being a 'lo-lan', not PURE Chinese. Ip had WSL and William teach him secretly until he soon left.

    • @thereflection7225
      @thereflection7225 7 лет назад +3

      This is wrong. Lee had two teachers in Hong Kong prior to leaving for the states, Yip Man gained popularity because of the event that Lee held for him when he went back to Hong Kong for a visit. When Lee died, the media hounded for information, and the legend of Wing Chun was born. Lee was very fluent in Mantis, which is why he specifically chose the style for one of the guardians in his GAME, but was never filmed due to his death. Had Lee completed GAME, Wing Chun would NOT have been as popular as it is today, because Lee studied many systems, not just Wing Chun.

    • @thereflection7225
      @thereflection7225 7 лет назад

      Also, William Chueng already explained why "the old man" did not teach Lee the full system. Even Chueng, to this day, feels horrible about it.

    • @thereflection7225
      @thereflection7225 7 лет назад +3

      When Lee was younger, it was Wing Chun vs Choy Li Fut in Hong Kong on the rooftops, and Wing Chun didn't necessarily fair too well. It was Lee who brought worldwide attention to Wing Chun, but Lee didn't teach Wing Chun when he came to the states, he taught Chinese Gung Fu, a compilation of systems that he was taught, including Wing Chun. This Wing Chun as the basis of JKD stuff was emphasized afterward because of Golden Harvest and the media. His original students like Inosanto were taught Mantis, as is evident when Dan uses it against him as the Mantis fighter in the Green Hornet. Like everything and everyone else, people used Lee's name to cash in on him, and this shamelessly includes the Wing Chun advocates.

    @Malchek73 You have completely misunderstood what Sifu Wan was saying. He said, " My master was a great martial art master too ", which means he thought Bruce Lee was a great martial art master. He also complimented Bruce's kicks saying they were really beautiful and really fast, then went on to say he was a very good actor. What part of that is disrespecting Bruce Lee's memory?

  • @EvosBasics
    @EvosBasics 12 лет назад

    @fierynox sure some people only focus on the more "dirty" techniques & tactics but i really doubt every serious martial artist will end up killing someone in a bar fight. I practice traditional MA so don't pull that card. Also old kungfu masters that touched hands would gladly own you without killing you. I'm sure Ip Man and countless others didn't kill people to get students. Competition is fine as long as ppl realize theres more to the art than just the ring.

  • @phoenixmountain
    @phoenixmountain 11 лет назад

    I know this is what people generally believe, but it is untrue. I was a student of Wong Sifu's and I am Caucasian. Among his other Caucasian students were Peter Ralston who was the first westerner to win a kung fu championship in China. Wong Jack Man himself said, "Even Bruce Lee never said these things." It would seem to have originated from Linda Lee. A new book called, "Showdown in Oakland: The Story Behind the Wong Jack Man-Bruce Lee Fight," turns the history behind this event upside down.

    @fierynox You got to understand MMA COMPETITION is a SPORT and such people are looking to gain points however they can so certain things they do don't pertain to self defense. As far as missing something. I didn't. Sure you train with all these "illegal" elements but at the end of the day you don't have to gouge out a guys eye or kill a man every time your skills come out. And anybody who is alive who challenged a TMA master and lost is proof of that.

    Crazy how Chinese whispers get out of control 🤦🏻
    Master wong was ip man’s senior student and a proper fighter he was nicknamed the man with the talking fists
    Ip man designated wong to teach B L
    Bruce was a baby compared to WSL
    Most students and teachers thought B L was very arrogant that’s how the young Chinese tv star came across but wong said he was quite charismatic once you got to know him
    But definitely no match for wong at that time if ever
    Bruce only studied W C for
    3 yrs so didn’t master the whole system before his dad sent him to America
    You can see so much WC in jkd
    I believe if Bruce had studied WC to master level with his jkd
    He would have been insane
    RIP
    GM. B L & GM. WSL

    I dont want to be a smarta..., but i dont get it why ppl still write the name as "Wong Shun Leung" in 2021.
    This was the way the name was written 50 or 100 years ago, but not today anymore.
    Its either in kantonese Wong Shun-leung or Wong Shunleung, or in mandarin Huang Chunliang.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wong_Shun-leung
    The Yale romanization has been overtaken by Hanyu Pinyin, which is more evolved and better understandable for western people.
    In chinese and korean the names basically consist of 3 single symbols, and they are written together without a space between them. If you translate them word to word it would be:
    WongShunLeung
    But this is not common in the west. But even Wong Shun Leung can be confusing since many ppl with think Shun is a middle name (like John Fitzgerald Kennedy), and the given name would only by Leung.
    Wong Shun-leung or Huang Chunliang shows clearly the 2 names Shun/Chun and Leung/Liang belong together which they do. Other examples:
    Wan Kam-leung
    Wong Fei-hung or Huang Feihong
    Mao Zedong
    Chiang Kai-shek
    etc.
    Not important but maybe interesting for some people.
    But great vid. Thx! :-)
    PS: Check out the subtitles of the video. There they do it right:
    Wong Shun-leung and Wan Kam-leung

    "the way is there for all to see yet no one follows" Gong fu or wushu follows the way of nature and it's laws and principles. Where you come from on this planet makes no difference. The principles are the same. No one race can have claim over them. Having said that, each race will express the principles differently adding their own flavour. If we choose to follow the chinese way we should respect the heritage and pass it on. Part of that includes the associated words including the term sifu.

    • @Billy-Mandalay
      @Billy-Mandalay 3 года назад +1

      Perhaps Linda's story was simply what Bruce's intepretation of what the affair was all about, and she believed his intepretation.
      Bruce was probably reading a motive behind the challenge that wasn't really that crucial to the matter.
      So I wouldn't be so hasty as to call Linda a liar. She believed what Bruce told her. And the error probably came from Bruce reading too much into it.
      He was young, and cocky, and he talked a lot, as if he were a
      seasoned vet. And that really annoyed the elders. lol

George wrote a book called Regards from the Dragon (2008). In 1964 in the Bay Area, the martial arts community wasn't all that large, so a lot of martial artists knew each other.

    I always heard about the fight between bruce and wong I'm sure it was a close fight but lets be real at the time this happened bruce wasn't even that good, so if wong won I wouldn't have been surprised but after the fight how ever win or lose bruce had reinvented himself put wong against the enter the dragon bruce lee at the level and conditioning he was at nothing againt wong he would have lost I have talking karate for over twenty years technique is not enough you have to have conditioning

      I think you mistaken Wong Jackman with the person mentioned in this video. They were two different people.

    The fight with Wong Jack Man took place in 1964. Wong Jack Man also taught non-Chinese. The fight had nothing to do with race. Bruce had given a demo in San Francisco in which he said he could defeat anyone in the bay area. Wong Jack Man took up the challenge. The fight was considered a draw by eyewitnesses.
    This is what motivated Bruce to train like a mad man. He wouldn't have been that motivated had he won easily in three minutes.
    Read, Showdown in Oakland by Rick Wing.

    @jayism65 Look up Bruce Lee vs Wong Jack Man.This is the fight that made Bruce take a real good look at his art.Elders in the chinese community were against Bruce teaching non-chinese so they sent him a challenge.Wong Jack Man was the Master who challenged him.The fight took place in Oakland back in 1965.If Bruce lost he had to close his school.He WON but was not happy with his performance.He then became obsessed with training & learning from other arts until the day he died.

    The WIng CHun was in Si Lam Mt Tai Monastery and Bruce wanted to study there but couldnt get ref! only a handlfull of WHite Guys attended, and it trained maim and kill and regeneration not a sport but a pure survival against the dynasty's armies. Yip was first non doctor to teach and was amazing and never lost to any style EVER! TIMING IS EVERYTHING! and with massive power behind timing it is non stoppable! Bruce realized it when my SIFU's Dr Chan and Dr CHu told us and why he adopted weight training and dynamic tension to build his power as a small chinaman to fight big white GUYS! Bruse we owe a lot to ! as well the YipMan and the great true Grand MAster of Martial Arts of the 1500-1900 of China Elite few. NOW if we evolve the mastership of ChiGUng then no fight will ever happen! complete energy control as the last step of Gods great lesson!

    Ok so who is Erika Mailman & again I think you mean James Lee not George.Maybe there where schools around with non-Chinese students but Wong wasn't teaching whites for yrs.These witnesses that Wing interviewed are probably Wong's buddies who went with him that day & they aren't going to say there man lost.What a bitter guy.All these yrs later & that one event in his life has consumed him.Sounds like a troubled old man to me.

    @MuayThaiViking Drop the emotionally weak 'racist' term. If you want to call your white instructor 'sifu', then fine(weird, but fine), but for him to call HIMSELF by that name would be either laughable, or simply pathetic.
    There are very, very few real Sifus left. The whole CONCEPT belongs 100% to Chinese culture.

    Erika Mailman is a freelance writer, and no, I mean George Lee. The witnesses were not Wong's "buddies", but mutual acquaintances of both James Lee and WJM. That one event hasn't "consumed him" nor is he "bitter" (amazing how you just make up shit), as he never spoke about it very much for years, and only now at Wing's insistence. You should really read Wing's book.
    But I guess it's just easier to believe the version told by Saint Bruce, rather than all the actual eyewitnesses.

    Race was not even part of the reason. It had NOTHING to do with the challenge. That's something Bruce made up. WJM himself actually had two Caucasian students, so obviously teaching non-Chinese wasn't the reason. It was because Bruce boasted at a demo that he could defeat any martial artist in the bay area. WJM heard this through a student and took up the challenge.
