Tim is right, Xbox shadow dropped Hi-Fi Rush because they were sending it out to die. They didn't know or think it was any good. The same people marketed, hyped up and released Redfall as a 70 dollar game. The people at Xbox are out of touch and don't know what they are doing.

You can’t say that but then ignore Tim himself saying it was great but then they released dlc and he just said I don’t want to play it. @@FILTHYGEARSMUSIC you have to realize that these guys play and review so many games because it's literally their job. They have to find a balance between playing for fun and playing for work. Your suggestion about him not playing the DLC doesn't mean he *didn't* love the original game. It happens all the time to me too as another guy in his 30s strapped for time. 100s of hours into Borderlands 3 (even bought all the DLC up front like a chump), Cyberpunk. Horizon, etc - never touched a single DLC and I LOVED those games. It's not out of "not actually loving the main game," just all coming out past my invested time with the game itself and on to other things.

A bit of perspective from an Xbox main: I supported Xbox for 20 years. From halo CE thru RRoD thru the Xbone reveal thru the ‘3rd party’ nightmare. I’ve always been happy with Xbox because I felt like they were generally trying to just make good games and systems. All that support ended this week. I just refuse to support a company that posts record profits but still fires thousands of employees and closes multiple studios. As of this week, I have literally zero clue what their goal is, what they are trying to do, and how anything that they are doing benefits me or the industry. I’m not buying any more games on my series x, I’m not upping my sub to gamepass when it expires, and I’m not buying any more consoles. I’ll buy a PC and use steam. There is no announcement, no justification, no explanation that they can give to justify the levels of blatant corporate greed that they have reached.

    Xbox is dead.
Not maybe dying. No. Xbox as we know it is dead. The actual Xbox ecosystem is crumbling away.
Like it's WAY beyond the point of no return, and it's accelerating in its death spiral circling the drain.
All this mess is the last flailing dying gasps of a dead company.
We're going to transition into an era of Microsoft puppeting the dead corpse of Xbox, pretending it's still Xbox, but really it's just going to be a digital storefront/streaming subscription service that sells games.
    Xbox is just Sega 2.0.
Buying Activision/Blizzard and Bethesda were the desperate Hail Mary last ditch efforts to try and leverage Microsoft's wallet, to try and monopolize the game industry, and regain power.
They thought "If we own everything, everyone has to buy it from us."
    But they fucked up.
    They didn't think it through.
They spent a gajillion dollars, and now they have to make that money back.
But they just realized that Xbox doesn't have an audience.
    Nobody cares.
They don't HAVE customers to sell to.
So suddenly buying Bliztavision and Bethesda is this MASSIVE catastrophic mistake, and they HAVE TO figure out how to make that money back.
So now they realize that they HAVE TO make everything multiplatform. They HAVE TO sell their stuff. But THEY don't have the customer base.
Sony, Nintendo, and PC have the customers.
They HAVE TO sell on Sony, Nintendo and PC now, and that's ONLY going to keep making their rivals stronger, because now they have EVERYTHING, and it keeps making Xbox more and more pointless.
And THAT'S why they're axing studios.
They're DESPERATELY trying to save money.
They're frantically killing off anything and everything and laying off fuckloads of people in their attempt to scrounge together money and pay back all that money they wasted buy these massive companies that they then just turn around and start mutilating.
    One flop? You're dead.
Phenomenal little rhythm game? Not good enough. You're dead.
They were counting on Starfield, Redfall, Diablo 4, etc to be massive hits and help stave off the impending doom of Xbox.
Having them ALL flop was DEVASTATING.
    And that's it.
They can't drive people to their system, so they have to sell their stuff to everyone else.
So Xbox hardware is rendered obsolete.
There's no reason to own it.
    The Xbox ecosystem is dead.
Their sales just dropped by like 31% in the first quarter of 2024.
    That's A LOT.
It seems pretty fucking uncertain that we ever see another Xbox system get released.
At this point I'd pretty much just call it a toss-up.
And if we DO see another Xbox system, that's almost definitely gonna be the last one.
Inevitably, Xbox just becomes a digital storefront like Steam, Epic Games, GOG, etc, and sells games on PlayStation and Nintendo systems.
It was ALWAYS destined to happen.
It's just happening MUCH sooner than I expected.
Xbox has always been a weird mirror of Sega in a LOT of weirdly specific ways, and this isn't really any different.
But the trouble for Xbox doesn't end there.
Because Xbox is pretty much a joke, if we're real.
They SEEM big and important, because Xbox is the dominant force in the entire Xbox ecosystem, right?
    Well, sure.
But the illusion that having an ecosystem means you're big and important is about to go away.
And THEN they have to face the reality of what they actually are.
A tiny fish in a MASSIVE ocean.
When Xbox inevitably becomes just a digital storefront, it's suddenly going to become obvious that it's TINY.
The market share it controls is NOTHING compared to Steam or even just Epic Games.
UPlay, GOG, Origin, Epic, etc etc have been working for AGES to compete, and none of them are even remotely close to competing with Steam.
The entire Xbox owner base right now is only 28.3 million. Only some fraction of that actively play it, and an even smaller portion subbed to Game Pass.
Game Pass has 34 million subs, but a huge chunk of them are on PC/cloud, not Xbox.
MEANWHILE.....Steam is sitting on 132 million monthly active users and 69 million daily active users, and controls 85% of the entire PC gaming market.
UPlay, GOG, Origin, Epic Games, etc etc all only share that last 15% of the market.
The best Xbox can hope for is some tiny little piece of that last 15%.
    That's where Xbox is headed.
The illusion is about to break, and it's going to suddenly be VERY obvious that despite being owned by Microsoft, Xbox is a tiny little fish in Steam's MASSIVE ocean.
It's gonna be weird to see Mario and Sonic and Master Chief at the Olympic Games.
The good news is that if you wanted Master Chief in Smash, this is how you get that to happen.
When Halo is on the Nintendo Switch 2, why NOT put MC in Smash?

Being someone who's been with XBOX and live since day one, with way to many games and systems, I'm about done here. Honestly one of the reasons I've stayed with Gamepass (and have 4 series s in my home) is because they have told me repeatedly that we were day and date on the biggest games, and they would make sure they had the games for us to play. I'm now reconsidering the fact that going all digital like they wanted was a very very bad idea... also an idea I never really wanted in the first place, I spent all the money with nothing to show for it but a potentially dying service. If this goes to much further south I'm out, will continue to collect my switch games and put a fork in Microsoft.

And why would you expect xbox to treat cod special and treat it well when we have a perfect example what they do and how they treat iconic IP.

I don't think Xbox has a long term vision. I was optimistic about the AB purchase but after this week why would anyone be optimistic about ANYTHING Xbox related. They have shown they aren't willing to give devs the time and space to develop great games. What comes to mind for me is Scalebound and how that was shuttered after years of development. It feels like Xbox is more interested in putting a key in the door of some developer that is about to bring out a new game and reap the rewards from that rather than invest in something truly new, and that has been Xbox's MO for a long time. Thats why we haven't seen a new Banjo despite the clamour for it, and thats why we haven't seen a new Viva Pinata despite fans asking for it. Xbox is increasingly becoming just a service rather than an actual publisher or developer.

This last shopping spree for studios has been crazy. they've only been increasing they spending by adding more personal and not producing anything of value. Im just sad for any studio that had been working fine without them and now are doom

Xbox went on a huge shopping spree. Microsoft simply want a return and Xbox aren't delivering. This is the Fallout.
Xbox maintaining impractical expectations doesn't help, they haven't adjusted their profit margins to reflect the global economy and they're growth projections are unrealistic in a post pandemic environment.
Coupled with a really 💩 media team. This just added fuel to the fire.

I couldn't care less about anything Call of Duty. Idc what anyone says. They stopped making Call of Duty for normal gamers a long time ago. It's for people that only play Call of Duty or similar games. Call of Duty hasn't been good since the original Modern Warfares and World at War. Give me a full fleshed out single player mode and a great story, and I'll be there, but that's not happening. This was literally to make money line go up, as they would say privately. Maybe the line would go up if you stopped spending so much on games and stopped paying your executives ever more money. I'd say, doesn't it make more sense to pay the person that made your food over the person that delivered it to you, but this is America. We do that lmao

Let's face facts. Microsoft/Xbox is going third party unless they want to die on their sword and shut down everything. It's very unlikely, but still a possibility. Sony is in hot water with its PC consumer base as well but not at the tipping point like Xbox is. After their large ass acquisitions of Bethesda and Activision, I knew that they were desperate, but now its showing.

Xbox leadership has no curation talent for video games industry.
    * They famously passed on GTA 3 because didn't understand how GTA 1 / 2 top-down could convert to 3D
    * They passed on Baldur's Gate 3 as a Stadia second run game
    * They passed on Alan Wake 2 because they didn't believe in the project pitch Remedy wanted to make (allowed them to re-buy their IP and partner with Epic)
    * They closed their only Japanese gaming studio (Tango) after Hi-Fi Rush was both critical and commercial success
I am sure there are countless other examples, and I am sure they wouldn't have backed company like Arrowhead Game Studios for ~8 years to make Helldivers 2 (convert Helldivers top-down co-op game to 3rd person live-service co-op game).
They only know marketing / business, and they are spoiled because they think they can just buy what they can't build, and worse yet, they aren't able to nurture, grow, and sustain what they buy and Game Pass is their big idea to compete by outspending their competition, but whatever short term traction they had with that (by providing great value), in long term it will destroy them because it is not sustainable to think you will have enough Game Pass subscribers to have multiple $100-300 million big budget games releasing each year that are made available for fixed $10 per month subscription that will keep the subscribers happy and growing until you can start to be profitable.
I think PS+ free games and Meta Quest+ free games are also mistakes. The reason indies are doing best on Steam and Nintendo Switch is because they don't offer free games subscriptions and so they get the most indie games first and the viral successes. Their consumers aren't waiting for the games to be free or just playing the free games, while ignoring the rest.
Ultimately, everyone competes for time more than money and free games, especially grindy live-service free games eat up the most time without generating any revenue to keep industry healthy.

Remember when these guys sat down with Phil Spencer and tried to joke their way through it but he wasn’t having it? Then people said great you asked the tough questions? When I say people I mean the other members of the show 😂 these guys stand for nothing. Go back and listen to the podcast just before this gen started, they definitely backed the wrong horse and have never corrected themselves to say get this company is doing stuff that doesn’t make sense. I mean even in this episode Tim is making it sound like like this is something that happened to Xbox rather than Xbox doing this. They took over Bethesda and they let the staff go there’s nobody else to blame. Should be more concerned with the truth than looking cool and making money.

  • @FILTHYGEARSMUSIC
    @FILTHYGEARSMUSIC 22 дня назад +4

Kinda funny and ign should take some responsibility for tricking Xbox fans into accepting gamepass and that it was a good idea. Week after week for this whole gen they have made jokes about PlayStation which is fine I’m not against humour but it really came across like they didn’t want PlayStation 5 to be as successful as it has been which seems really weird. On the reverse everything Xbox did was “right”. Didn’t make sense until they started getting interviews from Xbox and Bethesda and basically becoming ambassadors for the brand. They cheered every aquisition and laughed everytime a game was taken away from PlayStation and overhyped games that went straight to gamepass. They went as far as saying anyone who didn’t want the takeovers to happen was just a toxic fanboy yet they sit hear and act sad every time a dev is closed. Tim even tried to make excuses for these Bethesda laying offs saying when you buy a company you might not want all of it ignoring the fact Phil said these devs are safer now in our hands. And yes they mentioned some of the hypocrisy from Xbox but you can’t mention it and then excuse it it’s one or the other. These people do not care about gaming at all, they constantly moan about having to do their jobs. If they had any integrity they would said hey we did think it was a great deal and did think Xbox would do great this gen but we were wrong. They push their views which ALWAYS align with whatever Xbox’s latest strategy is they don’t think for themselves and have no accountability. I tweeted blessing about something he said in the show and he blocked me just for bringing it up. He also blatantly denied saying it before doing so despite the evidence being on his on show which was just the confirmation I need that these guys only care about having sheep who they can beg for money

Your flagship has no more merit that Halo Season 2 was a little better. Really since Master Chief Collection that took 5 years to correct.
Sony messes up in different light, but Microsoft is killing there own console in your face and not just by having to login to PSN to play a game you know what I'm saying......
Epic fail and really, moving to another generation of console ahead like the 360 will not change nothing this time.

They made a mistake with Tango.
    That is obvious.
I think they are going to force out new games and that includes ESVI and Fallout 5. I thought it odd she mentioned the Fallout tv show and that is why I think they will rely on Todd Howard.
Nothing personal against Todd but I think they will give him more power and control of additional studios to get those games out quicker. A lot quicker.

Look gaming sales are sucking right now. Gamers no longer have the extra money to waste on games like they did not too long ago. They got to pay high rent/mortgages, high energy costs, high grocery costs, astronomical vehicle costs, and wages that have failed to increase with the higher costs. This is serious right now for the entertainment business because we can due woithout new games, we cannot due without a place to live and food on the table. I think what we are seeing is that simple people can no longer afford the luxuries in life and are focused on surviving. That is why Microsoft is doing what they are doing to Xbox. Like it or not its not selling well and they spent close to 100 billion in studio purchases only to see the market drying up which has sent a panic through the company. They are now exploring ways to make the most out of the situation. This not just Xbox, but Sony and Nintendo as well. Until the economy gets better this will get worse. How you all liking Bidenomics now?

Guys, Bethesda was in bad shape financially when xbox bought them, we all knew this, especially when we learned that Redfall was a quick way of trying to increase estimated value for the sale.
Their financial trouble was why it was up for sale. These were all Bethesda studios. The obvious answer is these studios were hemorrhaging money for the Bethesda division and part of the problem. Xbox bought them, gave them time, saw how things were going for 16 quarters and those studios we the losing to much money amd didn'toffer the promise of maling up enough of those lossesin the future. Tango had a critically successful game but it obviously wasn't enough to offset their expenses.
It's as simple as that. It's nothing to be baffled about. Good on XBox for giving them 4 full years to turn themselves around.

What nobody is talking about is how the American economy is in the trash.
Microsoft is a trillion dollar company but it doesn’t mean any company has that cash on hand, and sustainable businesses across the country are no longer sustainable without major cost cutting.
Workers across America are being let go, jobs aren’t hiring, the government spends endlessly because it can print infinite amounts of money, and its status as the reserve currency is tumbling to be nothing.
State and Federal taxes are through the roof, and now our current administration wants to increase it even more which would affect game studios.
We are in a huge economic situation and it’s just now starting but nobody is noticing it.

    • @punkbastrd

lol. Taxes are high for the wrong people but corporations pay an average of 15%. This is the case of a massive industry overspending because they think they can get infinite growth. Studios are bloated and publishers think doing live service games will create an infinite cashflow. But 95% of live services fail. This is developers paying the price for publishers bad business decisions. Also, golden parachutes and bonuses of corporate executives that could have saved studios.

I mean the answer is there. She gave it. Its money. The studioes closed didnt make enough for them. It doesnt matter how much money they have. It is capitalism and corporation mandate. You need to make and bring in X dollars if not. You get the chop. Thats how it works. Yall acting like Sony didnt just do this too. Like when she says for the health of the comapany she means making money and if not, well it means making more cuts. Thats how that works. Yall guys are purposely acting as if you dont get capitalism or that they are being told to cut cause they want more money in the future not just the quarter or year that just happened.
Xbox is part of Microsoft. What part are you missing or are yall that dumb or naive that they march to them? Even nintendo cut. Like yall just want to be angry and act like if kinda funny ad revenue dropped you wouldnt start firing people.

    • @Lrx9
      @Lrx9 22 дня назад +3

Sony toooo. Yeah it’s capitalism and that’s how it works. If they closed just Arkane Austin and the other 2, no one would care this much (Austin may still have some fans tho). Tango didn’t deserve this.
If you actually looked at the studios Sony closed they all underperformed for years and years some had 10 years with 0 output. Name me a studio Sony closed in the last 4 years that made a critically acclaimed game a year before its closure. The public outrage is the mixed messaging, the lies, the greed buying up half the game publishers only to close studios you just bought, that’s the difference.
