China is trying to shift from wish to have technologies to need to have technologies that's why they are more focussing on manufacturing rather than it industry and entertainment.
I think it will interesting if you do a video on how is in reality South Korea.. With a little bit of history. because I think many people think is like a kdramas, and that is why they wanna go and live in there
Damn David! I don't get it. For years now I've said what a catch you are! Just from your views, looks and personality you seem like husband material. I know I'm not the only one. Is it hard to find a partner in Korea?
Young people not being able to afford a house is not only an issue in Korea. It's worldwide. I think the matter is that Koreans are more enticed with owning a house for feeling secured for the future. Well in another country I lived in for a while, young people register the marriage first to apply for public housing sometimes not knowing if they would really marry and then propose and get married. Found it very interesting and sad at the same time.
That’s so true. I feel bad for everyone in this situation. In Southern Canada where I’m from the prices go up super quickly and the cheapest 0 bedroom apartment in my city is 399k. The only way for genz or millennials to get a house and actually afford it is to buy a terrible old house in an industrial polluted city or buy one 2/3 hours away
@@mikitereszko2222 also canadian. So glad Im the age I am, people in their late 30s early 40s were the last generation to afford a house. We didnt even need a downpayment as back then you could get a cash back mortgage which you can use for the downpayment. I feel like parents maybe shouldn't save for their kids education but for their house downpayment.
I hate the fact that the previous generation is the reason we the youth of this century r suffering, it pisses me off a lot, and the fact that we r entitled to abide by their law ( y don’t we make some fair rules??). Also y r prices on everything suddenly rising? From food to transportation to uni fees, rents ? Does anyone know the reason y ?
I live in America born and raise and it not easy as you think. Yes we are blessed in someways, but a lot of young people and even young immigrants are struggling with the idea of owning a house because everything keeps rising but not the wages. It complicated too coz each state has different taxes etc. Not to far too far from we’re I live they’re build town homes for 500,000 to 1 million dollars now. That’s not even a whole house. Everyone across the world is %100 face these issues. It makes us anxious about our future and the generations proceeding after us.
This problem of young people not being able to afford a house, is worldwide. Property prices in my country went through the roof. I build a house in the countryside, travelling to work in the city and back home 80 Km a day. I cannot afford to buy a house in the city, therefore, I opted to buy an erf outside the city.
It became a lot worse in my country too. My sister bought a flat about 3 years ago, and now the exact same flat in their neighborhood costs about 30% more. This is insane. And yes, this is Moscow, so you can think that happens only in big cities, but no. I spent my holiday this year in my hometown, it's a really small town in the countryside, and my neighbors are all complaining about the prices of houses, their grownup children can't afford their own houses even in our slowly dying town. So it's a real problem.
Near my job there is apartment buildings being bulit, I work in the city and the sign said it was 2 bedrooms starting at half a million USD. It was insane, I mean I get its more expensive to live in the city but dang 2 bed, half a million?
It sucks cause a lot of us college students/young adults are still living with our parents due to how expensive everything has become. It especially sucks here in the US cause even though minimum wage has gone up, college and healthcare is just too much. And the real estate market right now has gone mad with covid being a factor now smh...
Agree, I think it is important for fans around the world to understand that what celebrities can afford, many koreans can not afford at all. And it is an important topic that I think people would love to learn about.
there was a previous episode on dk news (i think) in which they did go a bit into detail abt the housing issues and stock prices, but yes a separate video would be nice
i live in california and this literally sounds like us. there was news a couple weeks ago about how adele was complaining that real estate was too expensive in london so she had to buy her mansion in LA - as if that was the reason she couldn't live in the UK.
Maybe that's why people don't get married and having kids. Everything is so effin expensive. That's why we all have to deal with ageing population. Sad but true :(
And I tell people i don't wanna have kids and they always say "don't say that or wait till you have one". I can barely take care of myself let alone another human being fot 18 years
Another "good"/nice thing about the program "Come Back Home" is that they usually do a re-model of the apartment. Which improves the life-style of the current tenant... of course it benefits the owner too. The interior designer's try to make their improvements like "built-in furniture units" removable so the tenant can take it w/them when they move.
LMAO you two were on FIRE from the jump of this episode 🔥🔥🔥 so good. it's been so nice watching the two of you get more and more confident in your opinions, especially reporting truly wild news.
It’s the same problem with housing in Britain. The older generations have multiple properties whilst us millennials can’t afford a small flat. Even to rent in a small city like Edinburgh is extortionate
i’m in cornwall property should be cheap here but because of rich londoners buying second homes down here for their summer holidays the housing has skyrocketed and the council is not investing in housing for the locals i always say there is no affordable housing left in the country. the only housing being built anymore is luxury flats that no one can afford. the only other options for the average person are shitty dangerous apartments where the landlord doesn’t even care if the roof falls in or council housing which is getting less and less available this is the result of over a decade of tory control. please vote labour!
Same Boomers and older generation then them are having multiple properties among them. And here the condition is that Young generation even can't pay rent at time They are the reason why the real estate prices went off too far
It's like this everywhere now, in my country it's pretty much impossible for a young person to buy a house even if you make a decent amount of money, you have to be on the very high end of jobs to be able to afford a house like my family's house within 8-10 years and it's crazy cause i don't live in a mansion, just a quiet and for the most part nice neighborhood of the middle class, my parents even told me that the house was very cheap when they bought it decades ago. Oh, and all these years i mentioned are just for the house, we're not even talking about owning a nice car or having children/family.
I agree with the issue about people being pissed at celebs showing off their houses or others show like that. In these hard times, you really don't want to see rich people showing off when people are so stressed about house prices increasing every years and when it's even hard to live
But is it sane that people ask for empathy by showing hatred to these celebrities who are not the ones responsible for real estate prices? It's dumb. People should be mad at their govt keeping their pride aside (which they wouldn't as they "looovvveee" their country and history BS).
@@jigglypuff6852 mad at government? You know land price is not set by the government right? It was by market, demand and supply. Of course land price in Seoul would be expensive, everybody wants to live there, but there so little land for everybody. If you want to buy cheap land then go to rural area, not in super crowded city
@@melzz yes the land prices are not set by the government but if the government were to actually intervene and implement policies, then that would very significantly alter the market.
@@krishaa3898 and you know if they impose their policies, a lot more people gonna move to seoul or big city, and rural area will left deserted right? It's already become a problem right now where in rural area there are only a small of children. In some of rural area school even closed because there are no more new children attend
One thing I am interested in about this new Chinese ban is that they said they would be cracking down on effeminate men in the showbiz industry, and that they want to promote a more more masculine and patriotic image. I wonder what kind of regulations will they put in place for this: will it be go so far as to have suggested haircuts or styles of dress? Will celebrities (like idols, who wear makeup and sometimes have long and colorful hair) have to drastically change how they dress and present themselves?
The Chinese government is irritated by (fake?) effeminate influencers like these (even I am ... LOL): ruclips.net/video/0sgkS114_p8/видео.html ~ it's not just the appearance but also the words used and the way it's expressed ... grinds on my nerves.
And even their present day. I saw an post abt the kids from one of the families on Superman Returns getting mobbed by "fans" of the show when they went outside. That's just not right for a child to go through.
My favourite part about your show is entertainment in relation to the current society issues, like the explained series for Dope, baepsae. Really enjoyed the insight on real estate and social distancing segments, showed where real life stands in respect to all the celeb news.
@@artemis2luna I know but it not exactly the same. I just want to hear their story. I always wonder why do Koreans live with their parents and why do they be only having 2 kids tops. Like they are hella responsible. I’m one of 7 and thought times be hard I’ll be lying if I say I feel hopeless. So I just want to know more. As a matter of fact this could be a great topic for people across the globe because we all going through our shit.
The housing market is terrible in America as well. Very few lower to middle class people under 35 own a home because they are way too expensive. It's interesting that living alone in Korea means you're poor. Living alone here in America means that you make a decent living. You need roommates in order to make even rent here.
Yep, pretty much impossible to buy a home on a single income in most major cities in America. And I have no interest in getting married or living with anyone, so I'm priced out of the housing market 🤦🏻♀️
perhaps the rentals that allow for more than 1 person cost way more than finding a hole-in-the-wall space for 1 person so it's just cheaper to live alone 😔
@@IIIIII-pk2nl that may be true but that doesn't do much for the fact that housing prices within major cities are astronomical so that ppl will struggle finding loans unless they have substantial liquid assets for downpayments
I can understand how people would be upset about the shows like "I Live Alone", especially when you feel like it will never happen for you. The housing market here in the U.S. is getting out of control, but many young people still have the opportunity to buy a home. My daughter is still a few years away from being able to try to purchase a house, so I am worried about her home buying prospects.
Yoo Jae Suk actually said himself that he felt difficult to participate in the trend of observational programs. Said that he could not think of benefits he could give viewers simply by sitting and seeing footage. And I do agree that these programs are getting nowhere creative with endless mukbang shows and they showing off houses-which are so out of reach for most of the viewers. Idk but I think variety shows should be more than you just sit and give comments about something. There should some directions, playing games, completing missions. I am just really not into these I Live Alone kinda programs. Moreover people can't relate to it anymore. Now, it's more like a flexing show than a show about daily everyday life.
It depends on the celebrity. If you look at some of the comments, idol fans love seeing their favorite person just sitting around playing video games, watching movies, cooking dinner, etc. For them it does feel relatable.
That's why I only follow 1 korean variety show -Running Man... n that's why I m a fan of Yoo Jae Suk because of his ideology n seriousness towards his work till date...
Housing prices are high world wide .. in my country, South Africa , high unemployment , low salaries but extremely high costs for property , rent is high, property is ridiculously high ..
Because the demand is higher than the supply. Same in my country, I'm lucky I build myself a house 3 years ago in the countryside. I won't be able to afford one now.
@Jklovesramen if salaries increase and cost of living is not such a rip off in South Africa, the housing prices would not be out of reach.. foreigners still buy our properties which suck big time .. salaries is a joke in our country .
The China communist party is really scary and the China people have so little rights. My heart goes out to the Chinese people. I’m grateful I live in a democracy.
Rosa Amazigh well yeah. The point of democracy isn't to keep people in line. Obviously there's rules to follow but it's not meant to be a dictatorship. People don't to be controlled though so that's why democracy is better.
Donella huh? Democrats aren't socialists. Yeah some may be fighting for socialized healthcare and education but that's not the same thing as communism.
In America, we are also having a housing issue. Luckily, I bought my house 20 years ago, because if I didn't, I would not be able to afford one nowadays.
Hearing your perspectives about housing in South Korea, it totally makes sense why people are upset. It's everything you said and it's probably cause people are fed up.
I totally get why KNetz are pissed. Shows like that seem very tone deaf considering how inaccessible homeownership is for Koreans. On the flipside though, westerners have entire channels devoted to buying, renovating, and building homes. So I can see why westerners are saying, "What's the big deal?" It's very normal in western culture to have shows that boast wealth in that way.
Yes, it's still a good criticism. I hope the broadcasting industry in SK can reflect on that. Social disparity shouldn't be normalised. Boasting about wealth itself is pretty weird to me.
@@villainoir but shouldn't this be an issue addressed by the government. Unless the wealth is stolen, why should people who have it pretend they don't have it?? To talk about lack of content is one thing but to criticise their wealth after some of them gave up their youth to get it is another. I think they should be talking about how to make the housing crisis better and get more suggestions from others and ensure politicians are held accountable
I was thinking this too. HGTV and MTV cribs and youtube channels that show off celeb homes. Even something like Keeping Up With the Kardashians. It has been normalized in the states to watch these kinds of things. Culture is definitely in play here. In the states, I think these shows perpetuate the fallacy of the "American dream" like the coveting of fancy homes somehow fuels our production or something?? And because the dominant culture in the US still puts a lot of value on individualism, most people still praise and admire the wealth and success of individuals, I think. To be fair, the shows in the states about celebrity homes I don't think are really marketed as "relatable" so there is no real false expectation there. It's depressing, but at the same time, there is a level of fascination and spectacle in seeing how aesthetic and extravagant rich people live and getting a glimpse into the personal space of a celebrity. And even when it is grossly excessive, sometimes it's hard to look away. All of that paired with it being normalized is probably why westerners don't understand how these types of shows are so upsetting to koreans. I do think we are slowly seeing a shift though, in the sense that westerners are becoming more and more frustrated with the extreme wealth of celebs and rich people, especially with covid making living situations so much harder for people who are not multimillionaires. I just don't think that frustration is aimed at housing entertainment media I guess.
@@vanesalusaria7860 Because it's not that those who don't achieve it don't do anything. They might sacrifice a lot, go through hell, give up their youth too by working from jobs to jobs, etc. Just because someone isn't as successful as those celebrities, doesn't mean they don't work hard. Sometimes they're just not as lucky as them. For example, the idol industry itself.
I wonder if S Korea would ever put a rent cap to help people save for buying houses and keep owners of rentals from exploiting the tenants. Especially for owners that do not live in Korea... Hawaii considered laws similar to this at one point but I'm not sure if it went through. Praying the housing market improves 💜💜💜
I don’t think there are many owners who don’t live in Korea, so it’s a bit weird rule to impose. The introduction of cap may also just put the whole market into illegal zone. I live in Ukraine and there is a tax like 12% or so for renters. 95% of rented flats are therefore rented outside of legal framework so neither tenants nor landlords are protected from all kinds of scams and abuse. Not sure if that can happen in Korea but I’m just saying It’s a complex problem.
@@HiKimiko I'm talking about the market in general. David's problem wan not that it was a foreigner buying the house but his family not buying it on time. It could have as easily been another Korean. Maybe it is a problem for Seoul, I just never heard of it.
To be honest, I think the S Korean government is not doing a good job controlling the real estate market and allowing it to be so difficult for so many. In other countries, such as Singapore or the West, real estate is definitely not so dire. There are always different measures to control the real estate market. It just depends on whether the government has the will to do the right thing or allow the rich to take advantage of the poor! One possible measure could be setting roadblocks for the rich to purchase additional houses and providing many incentives/aids to first-time home buyers, and forbidding charging large sum of rent deposit upfront. No other country allows charging a large sum of rent deposit like SK! It is just insane!
We have a problem with real estate here in Australia as well specifically Sydney the houses price is crazy ( obviously because Sydney is over populated compared to the rest of Australia) , but for a house of 2-3 rooms it can be from 1-2 m depends on where u buy it in Sydney and rent is crazy high too
Ikrrr. My parents are always talking about how before in sydney a few years ago, you could buy houses half the price they are today. Its honestly crazy
@@carmerreumetinyOnOadyOiceX Ik same the house my parents bought if you were to buy it now it’s almost triple the price and it’s crazy because they are sayin in the future it’s also gonna get more expensive which is so sad
Same with Brisbane. it doesn't not help that people from interstate move up here like crazy. So the houses here have gone up more than double in less than 2 years. now with the Olympics, this will not stop.
For International fans, the reasons why not all people like the Kardashians or some TikTok stars is kinda related to why Koreans don't like the showing off of celebrities' houses.
@@maya_jones3411 you mean they can relate before because they were poor and struggling but anymore? How is that ironic? Wealth doesn't devalue experiences and hardships in life.
I 100% agree with reeling in fandom voting!! It’s freaking insanity how meaningless voting is now. Like why even count it when so much so fake accounts and streaming 24 hours a day for days on end?
I always thought shows like “I live alone” were to show fans of the entertainers that guest star on the show or fans of the regulars. Fans of the show want to see how their favorite entertainers live their lives and see if they might have anything in common or laugh and learn something new about them. Another example, Usa has shows that they claim are reality but they aren’t. Some watch for the pure drama and some choose not to because like you said most can’t afford houses like that and the shows make no sense. I just don’t think shows should get cancelled when people can change to another channel and their are people that actually really enjoy the show. Just my opinion.
Real estate is really bad where I come from in Europe is like the main concern for me and my friends but not as bad as in Korea for we need a minimum of 10% down payment to get a mortgage and earn 3x the amount of the mortgage. This seems much more doable than what Korean banks are asking for. Real estate prices are about the same… So I really get the frustration of Korean millennials… I myself am stressed out of mind because of the situation…. I can only imagine how stressful it must be for the average Korean.
Actually for *Yunho* 's case, the cops already posted a statement few hours after the scandal is reported, clarifying that there's no physical behavior or stuff with him. And now he's just being fined without any criminal charge, isn't this sufficient to prove that his only wrongdoing is breaking the social-distancing rule?
Yes it is. Same for the place only getting fine. If it was what is being said in this video the place wouldn't just be fined. Obviously. The restaurant once it fixes things to comply with regulations and pays the fines it's good to go. Yunho unfortunately doesn't get the same. And some people actually think it's funny. 😒
The media even lied at first saying he was trying to run and there was a fight with the police to create some big scandal. Even after being corrected by the police, there was no apology nor correction. Koreans seem to love cancelling celebrities over nonsense. This is such a stupid scandal tbh. Media making it sound even more shady than it actually is really weird.
@@nanous615 Even in this video *these 2 guys never mention about the statement from the cops at all* . Seems like they are one of those haters who just love to bring celebrities down too. SHAME.

As an Indian, sadly, I have to disagree with David that dictatorship models prob work for Asians (in terms of economic development). Our current incumbent govt is nothing short of a dictatorship (in the guise of a democracy) and yet we seem to be regressing economically and culturally. Or did you mean East Asians, David, as you always do and forget about the rest of Asia? sorry, i'm just moody and pissed AF at my country's current state of affairs.
no no you don't need to get pissed because we indians can simply sit at one place and wait to become slaves ,like we used to be in old days... so don't get pissed dear..
dictatorship models are never ever ideal for development. most of the dictatorship countries would like to call themselves as communist countries but the fact remains the same- the development is REALLY low and not only in terms of economy but also in terms of social development. most of the countries under such a model have proven this. an ideal model personally would be a mixture of socialism and capitalism so that both the interests of the public and an individual can be considered. and many countries in fact do claim to be of this model but we all know in reality it's all different. my main point is most of the models wouldve been good if they were handled by a person who actually cares but it's the real world lmao. they dont exist.
But you’re Asian too? And that is so awful! I don’t get like dang I could never imagine living in a place that the economy is getting worse everyday and under a dictatorship no less. I am so sorry y’all have to go through this. I didn’t even know this was happening!
@@jamais_vu3 So, the Indian economy was built on this mixed-idealogy model. We have no clue what's going on this country anymore. Like every other country, the real estate prices are so high that it's next to impossible to buy a decent one. Only way out is to get married and get a home loan under both you and your spouses name'(provided both are earning). That's the solution to every goddamn problem in India - get married. I digress. We lack educated, informed people in the govt who are there to serve the nation and not to look out just for themselves.
I don’t know how many rooms in my home. That’s such a Key thing to say. Housing is a big deal. The US is dealing with a housing crisis as well. China is another level. I agree that fandoms are crazy but their cracked down is scary AF. Not that Kris Wu deserves to be rescued but I wonder if the Canadian government has gotten involved trying to get him out. Once again, he deserves whatever punishment he gets but I’m interested in the politics.
tbh Key's comment was taken out of context. His house is a weird layout where rooms open to other rooms and that's why he said it, he didn't know what counted as a room. But I get the frustration with the whole show of course especially since it tries to be relatable
I understand feeling a certain way about wealthy people when you're struggling financially, but no one's forcing you to watch the show? Just don't watch it then? Many of the I live alone cast were just as poor/working class as us at one point in their lives but they worked to get to where they are. If you don't like the show, just don't watch it. I think people should put more of that anger towards their government instead of celebrities since politicians are the ones who should be representing us. Government action and policies have a direct effect on our way of life. Not sure if there has been some kind of government action against rising housing prices in Korea, but there certainly hasn't been any action where I live. I also rent and it really sucks knowing i might not EVER be able to own a house, but me hating celebrities on TV won't change anything.
Everyone is aware that celebrities have different lifestyle... The reason why people are raging because the show represents relatable content... Like how celebrities are normal people and stuff... When they say that they are leading normal life like normal citizens and flexes stuff how would people feel.... They would feel like that they are making fun.... And if u look closely to Korean variety shows most of the reactions are fake... Like they overreact to normally normal stuff ....they call them relatable.... Everyone was bashing kylie when she pretending to be relatable when she live in a relatively different world then how is this any different? If a rich person who doesn't know a shit about poor lifestyles say things like they understand how would they feel... That's it... These shows are for people... If people don't like it they can express their opinions
@@saniyabaiju2708 so you have to be poor to understand what it's like to be poor? Sure they can't fully empathize but it dosent take you to be in a situation to try and understand what it must be like, and as they said, these celebrities were also once working class just like everyone else, they also worked their way up. If you don't think the content is relatable then just dont watch it?? If it makes you feel miserable then you are under no obligation to watch it. People should be mad at real authorities responsible for such severe situations. I mean sure eat the rich or whatever but why is there jealously attached to that sentiment? Sorry I was kinda pissed off so I went a lil overboard here
@@saniyabaiju2708 I understand the hate. I also think whatever is considered "normal" is very subjective. It can mean different things to different people. Just cause their lives are different from ours doesn't mean they're not normal. As far as bring relatable, I can see how most people feel a disconnect there. I think the original cast and vibe of the show in 2013 was different to how it is now, since more of a focus is put on high profile, wealthy celebrities. But I don't think we should hate the cast for becoming successful. In the end, taking down shows like this and hating on celebrities online doesn't improve any of our lives. I still think hate should be put towards corporations, execs, politicians, and government who make all of our lives harder by only caring about themselves and their own greed.

i think its kinda funny and alarming because I just talked with my friend, how I thought the genz and millennials (my era) are a group of depressed and stressed passive suicidals and were the only people who were truly happy about the lockdown.
And some people still call us lazy and push us etc. I know it's not wrong to give advice to young people but why they need to mock us. In my country, older generation always look down young gen. They always label all of us as a lazy person. I know some of our gen are lazy but not all of them. When we were struggling to study in online classes, they said we're lazy and blah blah bc we study at home. In this year, there's two student in our country that die not bc of suicide but bc of stress and pressure. They studied so hard until they die.
@@bydamdoooo The older generation can't relate to us, and its not uncommon to see these tone deaf comments about how we're lazy because we're not home owners with nice cars and a family by our early 20s, because if they were able to do it back then why can't we do it now?
I agree is in bad taste showing off theirs houses; specifically how things are in South Korea and in the world. I used to watch the show before and some of the people in the show lived in basement apartments or small apartments. It was very different vibe .
I thought I'm already immune to that kind of language strategy the Chinese government use, in Chinese, regarding who knows what issues (I can't even tell what the hell going on right now in China...) But when these languages are translated into English and read out loud by other people, it's so hilarious yet sad...
everything always gets a heavier weight once it is verbalized bc you're forced to think abt what it actually means. same with racist rhetoric, hate speech, violent acts.
A lot of the context is lost in translation, not to mention the deeper reasons for these bans, e.g. corruption, waste, commercial manipulation, just to name a few.
I think there is no place now where the situation is good, but there is also no point in hating people that are doing good... I love looking at houses, the different interiors and all, it's entertainment that some viewers take too far
I think our generation will be called the generation of hopelessness or generation of failures in the history books, because we're basically the gap generation where almost no one will be able to afford anything and we also won't be having children because we can barely pay for ourselves so how are we going to feed children?
In New Zealand we have the same housing issues too, Auckland is equivalent to Seoul. However our government helps less fortunate with gaining homes through initiatives like Kaingaora where you can qualify for first home grants, and kiwisaver to help with your first deposit. It's sad to see it also happens everywhere and we even have another class of poor named for what you described where you work and still can't imagine buying a new home called "working poor". Does Korea have initiatives like this or help from your government? Be interesting to see if anywhere else has similar issues, initiatives or assistance for the poor?
It’s not the same, but I’m shocked to hear intl fans weren’t understanding why knetz were mad, even without the housing crisis context. Kim Kardashian got globally mocked and hated by western fans for showing off her wealth and privilege
To be honest it was the first time I heard of the blurb for the show. I had no idea that they were trying to be 'relatable', I think most intl fans watched for a particular celebrity they liked.
The housing pricing is becoming a global issue. The fans who didn't understand why knetz were mad are most likely the fans of those celebrities. They were just defending their idol because that's how fan culture is, they have to support everything their idol does and defend them at all cost
@@ghostlypanda4180 I mean it's either that or people who don't have to worry about this particular issue because they are older fans who own houses or just won't have to buy one when they get older, in my case i'm pretty much set to inherit my family's house because that's how we do here but it gets me so depressed when i see how ridiculous the house prices are all over the world and how it would be almost impossible for me and our generation to buy a house like the one where i live (because of my family), and we're not even talking about owning a nice car and having children/family.
I have lived in apartments for years and will continue to do so. I do not have to pay property taxes, school taxes, etc. Anything that goes wrong, I can call the landlord to fix it. I do not cut the grass. Once I have paid the rent and utilities, I can do what I want with my money. Owning a house is not as great as it seems with all the hidden costs involved.
I love your real-life discussions. About the real estate, welcome to California! ;) I am surrounded by million-dollar homes, so yea I know I will never own a home and I'm not worried about it. C'est la vie! Actually, a lot of people are leaving Cali for that same reason, the cost of living is too high for some.
I think in the early age of 'I live alone'is good, because they bring new faces, which really bring "living alone" experience, but the show has going big for some years now, and artists that come and their mcs are already successful. It's time for new faces in the show
To be honest, i watch i live alone bcs i like to see the house design. I did a few survey on many other show that showed the same thing (houses). It inspired me to build my dream house (engineeering major) ✌
Housing prices are high but now more than ever should be the time where that is less of a problem because there are more remote work or wfh options, people are moving away from big cities. And teleconferencing makes travel requirements less stringent. There should also be more city centers where people can live. I think it's poor public planning if everyone feels like they need to live in Seoul.
Honestly speaking i like this dkdk new very much out of all your contents & you both are nailing it every time. The only sad thing for me is i am currently not able to afford for your patreon else i will watch more n more of your videos guys. Keep going and i don't know why i have watched almost all videos of your channel and i relate myself with david the most😅😅😅. We have the same thoughts and aura... anyways do some more content....
In regards to the house, we had that MTV show back in the early 2000's where celebrities showed off their houses. So this is not new concept for us, which is why I think a lot of people don't understand why it's a big deal. I mean I get it. It's showing off in a way. But it's whatever. At least to me. lol
I think purchasing real estate wasn't such a big struggle as it is now 20 years later, as DKDKTV mentioned the rate is going up so fast working-class salary will never catch up. Maybe in the 2000s, it feels like you're watching something you can work hard for, but now people just feel hopeless.
@@st4rozemira Hopeless seems to be the word that defines our generation haha, i guess we just have to make the most out of it and not watch shows that would only make us more depressed.
I have no problems with shows like "I Live Alone", and tbh i actually love the show! It has been a while since I watched it so i'm not sure if it has changed, but i don't think i would consider it as showing off their houses. It might be showing off to you, and that is perfectly fine. We all have different ways of interperting "showing off". I still love the show and will continue to watch it. If there are people having a problem with the show, then just don't watch it!
It's expensive to live here in America as well, especially if you want a nice home, apartment, neighborhood. Living alone doesn't mean you're poor. Not sure where that analogy came from. I live alone, and I have a career. They have MTV cribs here where they're showing these celebrities homes, but it doesn't bother me. To each his own.
Lol David and Danny going on about millennials. I felt every bit of that 😂😂 I’ve learnt to just laugh it off. With the rising housing prices COVID made shit harder with cut offs. It’s a shit show. Thank you for your rant 😂😂
The housing crisis is so relatable in Sydney prices have gone up like 100k minimum just over the past 6-12 months, I don't think my income is going to be able to catch up to get together a deposit or be able to service a massive mortgage...
is living with roommates not a thing in korea? like if you got one apartment with your group of friends wouldn't that work? it is so common in my country that is why I am asking.
JYP asked Tzuyu's parents in how to handle the situation. Tzuyu's parents decided on the apology and I believe either wrote the apology or told Tzuyu to do so. JYP had no say on the matter.
Really enjoyed this video, I like hearing about your personal opinions and experiences especially on economic and social issues in South Korea and abroad :)
I like what David said about the celebrity housing reality shows. It’s true, I have never watched shows or youtubers that are rich to see their houses or things. It’s never interested me. But a show where they visit the places they use to live before? Talking with the people who live there now? If it was a celebrity I was a fan of I would LOVE that. That’s a great idea. Unfortunately I’m not a fan of too many celebrities so I doubt there is enough episodes for me but still. That IS more creative and relatable while still acknowledging that they don’t have ordinary lives anymore. And maybe even giving off a feeling of hopefulness to the people living there now. It’s a good idea. Totally agree. (May check it out if I can find with eng sub lol)
i did remember some years ago when watching Lee Gookjoo in I Live Alone, that is what i called relatable for living alone. After that just bunch celebrity inviting friend to their luxury home. I mean some people would like that, but i just did not buy it
I totally sympathise with Knetz coz I live in Singapore and the property issues is pretty similar. But I love watching I live alone. FOR ME… its about the interior, lifestyle and also being content even tho they are living alone. And don’t forget Kian84 lives very humble lifestyle. And some of the guest stars are not living in a mansion apt. Hwasa used to live in tiny apt too. I am kinda scared every time this show had an issue 🥺🥺
The show is a lot more than just what their houses look like. If anything, it's just a small segment in the beginning while the rest of the show majorly focuses on what the celebrity person is doing. The show is relatable in the sense that it shows lives of people who live alone and they talk about lack of friends or being by themselves or taking trips alone or cooking for yourself every meal of the day and so on so forth. The housing issues are real but that show or people who have it better can't really be blamed for it. I love your comment btw. It's the most sensible one I've read so far.
I totally get the housing concerns. I'm lucky enough that my dad is selling me his house is pieces. In the last 5years my house went from worth $500,000 to $900,000. My yearly salary did not match it. I am so grateful for my father. That said we had MTV Cribs when I was a kid. Those shows don't bother me.
Ngl a lot of these residences shown on ‘I live alone’ are pretty boring spaces in terms of interior design and decoration. I get that some of these apartments are much more spacious then a standard apartment in seoul but still. It’s probably coming from Australia where our houses are just generally a lot larger.
At first I was gunna defend these types of shows on account that they're daily life type shows that happen everywhere. But then I started thinking, "I can't remember seeing these shows in the UK". Maybe there are but I've never watched them, I've never even seen an ad for them and I live in the UK! I've only ever watched these types of shows about Americans both on TV and on RUclips. I used to think all Americans were rich, it wasn't untill I grew up that I realised the majority of Americans are really poor. In England people don't talk about money, ever, it's a touchy subject. We're afraid we don't have as much money as our friends but we're more afraid that we do, that's why you barely see people from the UK doing these types of shows. This segment really opened my eyes and told me I'm poor.
It's just american tv, we don't have these shows where i live too, only the translated version of the american/canadian shows, and tbh these days it would just be adding salt to the injury when most of our current generation won't be able to afford these houses anyway, we're already depressed kids do we really need them rubbing it in our faces haha.
@@Daniel-wz3yv I hear you! These shows can be aspirational but aspiration is nothing without education. They never show how they make money or the logistics behind running a business. It's all look at the $10,000 chain I bought and the $15,000 that I spent on a night in Vegas. There's no point in it other than rubbing their wealth in people's faces. T.V will never try to educate the poor about wealth, how to grow it and maintain it. But they like to treat the poor like they are charities it boost their moral image and inturn their ratings, smh. But hey at least we make them laugh.
Too many rich Chinese people in Toronto, Vancouver, rich Chinese move to Canada so that they don’t have to learn English. Poor people would get a ridiculously expensive loan to get to US and work illegally to pay off the loans.
"Oh wow, poor people! My Gucci couch could fit in your whole apartment; you must be so brave." I'm joking obviously, but that's the vibe this gives off. The days of Cribs are long over, and it was tacky back then.
Only Koreans are pissed BECAUSE YOU ARE FAIR! You have GREAT values in mind, that's why it bothers you more than other countries. We (from other countries) are hopeless, that's why we can't even bother to care anymore. But we all should be mad about all these things!
The local population needs to look at how their chaebols got so wealthy in the first place; the level of corruption in big business (the recent case of Samsung heir is one such example) and also why so much of their real estate is been sold to Chinese property developers. I think being angry at celebs is a knee-jerk reaction. They need to find ways to level the playing field that has faced SK since their economic boom after the IMF crisis. Property poverty is an issue all over the world..most people cannot afford to live in their capital cities unless they buy with friends or have part-ownership (which really is just another form of rental). :(
I think the terminology and scale may also be contributing to us internationals not fully getting the extent of the housing issue. Speaking as a Canadian, when we think of a "house" we think of a detached single-family house and not an apartment unit. But in much of Asia, hyper population means even a city's suburbs consist of mostly apartment buildings. "Buying a house" means "buying an apartment unit" and not "buying a detached house" because space is so limited in these areas you'd have to be ridiculously rich in order to afford a house the same size of our standard single-family home here in North America. So when we see celeb homes on say 'I live alone' we do think these homes are luxurious and expensive. However, we're still registering these homes as quite a bit less luxurious and expensive than they actually are because, even as someone living in Toronto (which is considered one of the most expensive places to live in North America), we're used to "houses" being much bigger. We're evaluating these celeb homes by our own standards, when really these homes would be equivalent to mansions over here.
In 1985 people in the USA were angry at the fact that all those celebrities were making so much money, a group made a song about it. Dire Straits - Money For Nothing This feeling is simply envy and jealousy of those who can't but want the rewards of those who can. The solution in 1980 the young people moved to places that were cheap and warm. The places like San Francisco became the places where music, art, creativity were being birthed then those places became the place to be. So corporations started buying tracts of places to keep the prices low and the government put in transportation because rich people need laborer's. Also businesses started moving to places where the young people were.
The housing issue is the same here in Europe. The elders and wealthy buy secondary/retirement houses in the countryside and dynamic villages are now dead half of the year + the covid crisis increased the issue as people in the city also left for the countryside, with much more wealth than the locals. So even places that used to be known for being cheap became stupidly expensive. Now people prefer (have no choice) to build small houses rather than buying the existing ones at a golden price, destroying the landscape.
He’s focused on China. He’s shown again and again that he’ll toe the Chinese government party line to benefit his career in China. Frankly he’d drop Korea in a second if it came to that especially since he’s already established himself. Hell… he dropped Hong Kong and never looked back 🤭😬
China has also recently started cracking down on the education sector as well. They don't want anything outside of their curriculum taught so the private tutoring industry has also been hit hard.
I remember when fans were mad at Jackson Wang for not supporting Hong Kong publicly but David is so right. I mean Jackson was born and raised in Hong Kong but his parents and other family members aren’t from Hong Kong so yeah I would defo not shit talk mainland China when my life and my families lives could be in danger, I had no idea that an actress disappeared!! That’s so scary.
Oh, the No Hope situation is sad 😞, it happens everywhere, but it seems it is worse there in Korea. I can’t believe the cost of even just renting it’s high especially with the deposit you have to put down. Then no loans is crazy.
It is an issue in Malaysia too. Like there's a viral article about the dropping percentage of rainforest in Malaysia cause by deforestation for farming (palm oil) and houses, and people are mad about it. There's a lot of houses in KL that haven't been occupied yet but sold at a really high price. Like, I need to work for 10-15 years just to afford a one-storey house with 3 rooms around KL and Shah Alam. It's a total bs, really... And now, the govt let these private companies to build more houses?? Uggh😑
I'm half half on the knetz being mad too, cause like the shows are tone deaf. The celebs having a big house doesn't really matter, it's the showing it off in such a out of touch manner
It was said by a witness that Yunho's "friend" wanted to seal a business deal there and asked him to be there to impress the investors as him knowing a celebrity... the statement he made excluded that to protect said parties...we don't talk enough about how celebrities are social pressured, if they refuse people will say they are arrogants... I say people are so annoyed by the pandemic or something because lately they ruin careers and lives for legit mistakes taken out of proportion... we all have issues, and real concerns but we are treating celebrities as punch bags and it is not fair.
It’s not even in Korea. Same here in US for me. We’re fxxxxxxx by society rules. I do not see owning my own home in my living lifetime. I myself feel the same as you guys, I’ll just die too right along with you in this housing issue.
Danny asked that why isn’t the Chinese angry about what the government is doing. I am a Chinese student, and what I can tell you is that we simply have no way to fight back, we are helpless…
The contrast between Danny and David laughing at China's ideological reasoning behind the policies while approving some of the policies themselves 😂 But I mean... some fandoms are cultlike when it comes to siphoning money out of fans using parasocial connections to celebrities so you can't fault their motivation. It's just the actual execution of these measures that will determine the outcome :/
I live in Spain and we have the same problem here. Real state and rents are so high my generation, young adults in our twenties, we can not emancipate from our parents. It's very sad and we feel discouraged and hopeless.
Or somewhere in Africa at least they can live alone we can't even live alone buying a house is a dream but we keep going in hopes that someday we will be able to
Wowww this discussion is so interesting. Sometimes i think about how nice it would be to move to SK (the politics and corruption in my country is crazy bad) but then i think about this pressure cooker society and that housing problem.
I understand people feeling angry at celebrities flaunting thier luxurious houses. I just watched a documentary, here in Australia, about parcel delivery people in South Korea working themselves to death. Wealthy people who show off thier wealth are rubbing salt into the wounds of those who struggle to pay rent and put food on the table, many of whom work very hard for very little.
I watched that video too. But I find it strange that the delivery guy is clearly bilingual and speaks pretty good English. He could have gotten a better paying job with his bilingual abilities.
@@bront9990 urhhhh….. that’s a pretty grand “maybe”, not familiar with what’s happening in Australia except for Elon musk’s battery farm, but that video just screams inauthenticity right off the bat.

Damn David! I don't get it. For years now I've said what a catch you are! Just from your views, looks and personality you seem like husband material. I know I'm not the only one. Is it hard to find a partner in Korea?
Haha good to know
Young people not being able to afford a house is not only an issue in Korea.
Up,I grew up do Toronto and can’t afford rent let alone a house
Yesss I always wanted a house in the country. It’s a little more peaceful than the city too.
Mom bought her house for $60,000 and that house is valued at $475,000
I would love to see a whole video about the housing issue n how it started n how are people coping with it
Agree, I think it is important for fans around the world to understand that what celebrities can afford, many koreans can not afford at all. And it is an important topic that I think people would love to learn about.
Me too
there was a previous episode on dk news (i think) in which they did go a bit into detail abt the housing issues and stock prices, but yes a separate video would be nice
i live in california and this literally sounds like us. there was news a couple weeks ago about how adele was complaining that real estate was too expensive in london so she had to buy her mansion in LA - as if that was the reason she couldn't live in the UK.
Maybe that's why people don't get married and having kids. Everything is so effin expensive. That's why we all have to deal with ageing population.

It’s the same problem with housing in Britain. The older generations have multiple properties whilst us millennials can’t afford a small flat. Even to rent in a small city like Edinburgh is extortionate
Born and raised in Edinburgh and had to leave the city to buy, same story as pretty much every younger generation here....
i’m in cornwall property should be cheap here but because of rich londoners buying second homes down here for their summer holidays the housing has skyrocketed and the council is not investing in housing for the locals
i always say there is no affordable housing left in the country. the only housing being built anymore is luxury flats that no one can afford. the only other options for the average person are shitty dangerous apartments where the landlord doesn’t even care if the roof falls in or council housing which is getting less and less available
this is the result of over a decade of tory control. please vote labour!
Same
Boomers and older generation then them are having multiple properties among them.
And here the condition is that
Young generation even can't pay rent at time
They are the reason why the real estate prices went off too far
It's like this everywhere now, in my country it's pretty much impossible for a young person to buy a house even if you make a decent amount of money, you have to be on the very high end of jobs to be able to afford a house like my family's house within 8-10 years and it's crazy cause i don't live in a mansion, just a quiet and for the most part nice neighborhood of the middle class, my parents even told me that the house was very cheap when they bought it decades ago. Oh, and all these years i mentioned are just for the house, we're not even talking about owning a nice car or having children/family.
I feel you, Danny, on the "I want some 'Parasite' shit".
lol, i always felt about those shows being soo repetitive

I agree with the issue about people being pissed at celebs showing off their houses or others show like that. In these hard times, you really don't want to see rich people showing off when people are so stressed about house prices increasing every years and when it's even hard to live
THen don't watch it.
But is it sane that people ask for empathy by showing hatred to these celebrities who are not the ones responsible for real estate prices? It's dumb. People should be mad at their govt keeping their pride aside (which they wouldn't as they "looovvveee" their country and history BS).

That's funny, most good looking guys are androgynous, they kill it in wuxia dramas, ........
Also scared for those who are naturally "feminine" like a lot of gay men who talk or act a certain way...
I could see that happen, yeah! Similar to how in North Korea, they have boards with accepted hair styles for women and men. What a disaster.

@@jeensjaams9933 i have no clue. it's just a messed up situation all around 😔
My daughter is still a few years away from being able to try to purchase a house, so I am worried about her home buying prospects.
it's not just the US, it's worldwide actually. it's very sad. i hope your daughter will be able to find a home in the future!
Now, it's more like a flexing show than a show about daily everyday life.
spot on!
I mean, if people are not liking it, ratings will drop and it will get canceled. Nothing really needs to be done.
if you're looking for such shows, i recommend all seasons of Running Man, 2Days 1Night, The Great Escape, and Busted...

In America, we are also having a housing issue. Luckily, I bought my house 20 years ago, because if I didn't, I would not be able to afford one nowadays.
Right!
yes, we bought ours 16 years ago in southern California. There's no way we can afford our house if we are to buy it now.
The people talking about it were probably not even 5 years old 20 years ago
@@mingxuanfan exactly 😒
Hearing your perspectives about housing in South Korea, it totally makes sense why people are upset. It's everything you said and it's probably cause people are fed up.
I totally get why KNetz are pissed. Shows like that seem very tone deaf considering how inaccessible homeownership is for Koreans. On the flipside though, westerners have entire channels devoted to buying, renovating, and building homes. So I can see why westerners are saying, "What's the big deal?" It's very normal in western culture to have shows that boast wealth in that way.
Maybe it's why Koreans may think we have golden spoons too. If we live in Korea... Oh boy...
Need to
I don’t think there are many owners who don’t live in Korea, so it’s a bit weird rule to impose.
@@KaterynaM_UA the place David is renting with his parents was bought by a foreigner when they didn't buy it.
In the Netherlands the housing crisis is the same. It is almost impossible to buy a house. And rent is also very high
The song "Baepsae" by BTS was so on point talking about the socio-economic problem of SK. I feel you guys😭 this happens also in my country.
And not just SK, the line about passion pay reminders of of toxic intern culture where they pay by "exposure"
Yeah I relate to I’m from Chile
It’s ironic, BTS themselves don’t relate to “Baepsae” anymore as they are all now multi-millionaires living in luxurious million dollar homes.
@@maya_jones3411 At least they don't flaunt it, basically what we know is just from the news digging into their private lives.
Tell me about it..it just get worse day by day..all the govt do is increase the fuel price and build statues..tf?
dictatorship models are never ever ideal for development. most of the dictatorship countries would like to call themselves as communist countries but the fact remains the same- the development is REALLY low and not only in terms of economy but also in terms of social development. most of the countries under such a model have proven this. an ideal model personally would be a mixture of socialism and capitalism so that both the interests of the public and an individual can be considered. and many countries in fact do claim to be of this model but we all know in reality it's all different. my main point is most of the models wouldve been good if they were handled by a person who actually cares but it's the real world lmao. they dont exist.
But you’re Asian too? And that is so awful! I don’t get like dang I could never imagine living in a place that the economy is getting worse everyday and under a dictatorship no less. I am so sorry y’all have to go through this. I didn’t even know this was happening!

And some people still call us lazy and push us etc. I know it's not wrong to give advice to young people but why they need to mock us. In my country, older generation always look down young gen. They always label all of us as a lazy person. I know some of our gen are lazy but not all of them.

Wow, hearing about real estate in Korea makes me want to die too. Financial stress is a huge component of depression & anxiety for lots of people
I have lived in apartments for years and will continue to do so.
I think purchasing real estate wasn't such a big struggle as it is now 20 years later, as DKDKTV mentioned the rate is going up so fast working-class salary will never catch up. Maybe in the 2000s, it feels like you're watching something you can work hard for, but now people just feel hopeless.

In Korea, even renting can be expensive, especially the deposit.
Same I love watching the different interiors
The show is a lot more than just what their houses look like. If anything, it's just a small segment in the beginning while the rest of the show majorly focuses on what the celebrity person is doing. The show is relatable in the sense that it shows lives of people who live alone and they talk about lack of friends or being by themselves or taking trips alone or cooking for yourself every meal of the day and so on so forth. The housing issues are real but that show or people who have it better can't really be blamed for it.
I love your comment btw. It's the most sensible one I've read so far.
Since when did self-made success stories stop becoming inspiring? ....yes, just now during the pandemic.
Dang didnt realize you had to put 60% down on a house in korea to qualify for a loan

Housing prices is a problem in most of the developed world now…
I think the terminology and scale may also be contributing to us internationals not fully getting the extent of the housing issue.
Interesting show. Always learn from you guys. So, on the China Kpop thing, wonder how that affects someone like Jackson Wang.
He’s focused on China. He’s shown again and again that he’ll toe the Chinese government party line to benefit his career in China. Frankly he’d drop Korea in a second if it came to that especially since he’s already established himself. Hell… he dropped Hong Kong and never looked back 🤭😬
@@jaetine9006 Wow. Thanks. Didnt know. He seems cool.
@@jaetine9006 jackson rank no.10 on forbes china celebrity list of 2021 without starring in a drama or movie he don't need hk or korea.
China has also recently started cracking down on the education sector as well. They don't want anything outside of their curriculum taught so the private tutoring industry has also been hit hard.
The real estate conversation was really interesting
I remember when fans were mad at Jackson Wang for not supporting Hong Kong publicly but David is so right. I mean Jackson was born and raised in Hong Kong but his parents and other family members aren’t from Hong Kong so yeah I would defo not shit talk mainland China when my life and my families lives could be in danger, I had no idea that an actress disappeared!! That’s so scary.
not alot of people understand that having freedom of speech is a privilege which many will never experience.
Oh, the No Hope situation is sad 😞, it happens everywhere, but it seems it is worse there in Korea. I can’t believe the cost of even just renting it’s high especially with the deposit you have to put down. Then no loans is crazy.
This vid was very interesting when u spoke about china and the housing problems in korea
Wow. I had no idea how dire the real estate situation was in SK. That show “I Live Alone” is so out of touch and frankly, insulting.
🥺
The contrast between Danny and David laughing at China's ideological reasoning behind the policies while approving some of the policies themselves 😂 But I mean... some fandoms are cultlike when it comes to siphoning money out of fans using parasocial connections to celebrities so you can't fault their motivation. It's just the actual execution of these measures that will determine the outcome :/
I mean, they're not wrong. The definition of a celebrity fandom is basically a group of ppl worshipping a person... 👀
I live in Spain and we have the same problem here. Real state and rents are so high my generation, young adults in our twenties, we can not emancipate from our parents. It's very sad and we feel discouraged and hopeless.
If living in SK makes u feel feel hopeless and die, then what about living in india where we live in hell
Or somewhere in Africa at least they can live alone we can't even live alone buying a house is a dream but we keep going in hopes that someday we will be able to
hahahhaha
@@mingxuanfan Maybe. But many people in Australia are bilingual and are unable to find well paid work. Perhaps it's the same in Sth Korea.
@@bront9990 urhhhh….. that’s a pretty grand “maybe”, not familiar with what’s happening in Australia except for Elon musk’s battery farm, but that video just screams inauthenticity right off the bat.
@@mingxuanfan What show did you watch? The show I saw was called Foreign Correspondent. I didn't get any sense of inauthenticity. Regardless, the topic here is about rich celebrities flaunting thier wealth on TV shows while many struggle to make ends meet. Let's just leave it at that.
In Japan they even have a word for that "koroshi".
