    One thing I absolutely love about RBY is all of the legendary Pokémon being optional, like your adventures led you to them through your own cleverness and hard work. I've also always liked Team Rocket as the villain team due to the fact that they feel like a believable threat, I feel like later games' villains have just huge, universe warping aspirations that it extends beyond relatability (though Gen V and VII did a way better job with this)

    • @Gatitasecsii
      @Gatitasecsii 5 лет назад +5

      Gen 5 was definitely the most relatable. Ironic (maybe actually not ironic at all, but expected) that PETA even took the side of team plasma (though I hated the name). Remember pokemon black and blue, the parody games PETA made? What a wonderful time it was.

    • @al3220

      Exactly. The more the games made the legendary Pokemon mandatory, the more I detested those parts of the story. My main goal when I play a Pokemon game is to explore and have fun, not to save the world. In the off chance I encounter a legendary, it becomes a special experience rather than a "let me get this over with so I can get on to the League" type of chore.

    Gen 1 is certainly different from modern generations. Its story is more in the background, and the game itself focuses more as you said on a young trainer going out on a journey. The villains have no world ending schemes up their sleeves and legendaries are something you can either stumble across or miss entirely, which makes them somewhat more legendary in my opinion. It's heavily limited by the technology of its time, and in many ways feels more 'video gamey' than the modern games, but it would be interesting to see a similar approach in a modern game. Let the player make their own journey, less hand holding, less legendary worship, more exploration.

    I didn't buy Gen 1 back when it first came out, playing only Red and Yellow over the 3DS eShop and on emulators. The biggest problem was the speed of the game. It felt so slow and unbalanced that it made playing the games a hassle. The graphics were fine, nothing amazing and the Pokemon selection was fair. However, Pokemon movesets were so shallow and weak that a lot of Pokemon sucked. I will say that with all of the broken mechanics and limitations, RBY are challenging enough that if you wanted a real Pokemon challenge, you can go and play these games.

    You say you've never played Green, but the truth is you never played the Japanese Blue version. The Blue version released outside of Japan was actually Green version. The Japanese Blue was the 3rd game, like Crystal or Emerald, that helped fix a bunch of minor issues the prior versions had and gave new front sprites for each Pokemon, some better and some worse. The Red and Blue released outside of Japan used Japan's Blue's sprites and improved engine but Red and Green's wild encounter tables respectively, and they never released the Japanese Blue version worldwide as a result. As for some of the bugs, Pokemon Stadium did fix most of them, but only those for battles and not all of them, an example would be Focus Energy being fixed but Wrap still being broken. As it stands, the only reason to play Gen 1 is either nostalgia, to learn how optimized the current games are comparatively, or to get moves on certain mons you can't get in later gens through the 3ds Virtual Console versions.

    The experience of playing Gen 1 in a time with limited access to information and no familiarity with the game's formula is one that I doubt can truly be pulled off again by the modern series. It truly deserves an "A" for being the first of its kind. The fact that it was also limited to 151 Pokemon made finding obscure pokemon more exciting, as opposed to newer games with 893 that just cause you to get dex-fatigue. (This is coming from someone with a complete living dex and about 50 legitimately obtained shinies on HOME.)

    I know it would require more work and maybe you don't actually have the time for it, but having relevant imagery be the main focus would be better. (You already do this to an extent, but it's like a side dish to your face) You don't even have to use all new images/videos every time. It's common practice to have folders of tagged media to just toss in when you need it.
    At the end of the day, I've only seen two of your videos and have no right to tell you what to do, but these are just suggestions based what little I know about entertainment.

    You make some very good points in your video, but I think your final mark isn't exactly fair, there should be some qualifiers. Yes a C may be about right when you compare it to all the later games, but taken into consideration of the time, this is the game that started the Pokemon craze. As popular as Pokemon is today, it's actually nothing compared to the mania in the late 90s.
    I would say for the time this game deserves an A, it was incredibly innovative and addictive. The fact that the Gen 1 games still outsold every generation afterwards (by quite a considerable margin) really deserves more credible in my opinion.

    • @hyperstargaming6150
      @hyperstargaming6150 5 лет назад +1

      metalfly how it sold and how it is in today’s standards isn’t the criteria for these videos though. It’s how well they work. What glitches, bugs, or problems stick out like a sore thumb in today’s day in age. This isn’t a review from 1996, it’s a review from 2019, where the game is so painstakingly unfinished. It’s a good game, yes, but it’s miles behind what some other games accomplish (except Kalos, Kalos was just sad, despite my boi Greninja). Gen VII, despite it having handholding galore, does a LOT that Gen I is completely outshined by. JPR rated it as a game in 2019. He does mention it does fare okay against the test of time, but it still dwindled heavily. It is not perfect. It is not being reviewed as if it was just released. A critical analysis with no bias involved, meaning he is not going to be nice even if the formula was set with these games. They had a LOT of problems. Expansive? Yes. Tough by stupidity in the office decisions? Also yes. He points at the ups and downs and is honest. I can respect it being A in nostalgia, that’s the case for me too, but in all honesty, JPR is right. This game was improved upon greatly in later games.
      Sorry for ranting, I just saw a lot of comments like this, and it got me fed up with it, considering the clear criteria anyone can deduce by watching and paying attention.
      Apologies, and thanks.

      @@hyperstargaming6150 It is mentionable that the game has aged but coming up with negative things about this game by comparing it with later generation games seems to be the wrong approach in my opinion. With that approach many great games from the PS1 or N64 era can be seen as just mediocre games by todays standards. Games like Zelda: Ocarina of Time or Metal Gear Solid 1 (or any other game from that era) have been heavily improved by their sequels. Reviewing a game from the 90s with todays standards is biased in my opinion. Games do age. Some more some less. All in all the time aspect is an important aspect to consider. Especially when you talk about an old game.
      And maybe we shouldn't expect someone to be unbiased. Even if it's a RUclipsr who has many followers and create a lot of content for a subject matter. So he (you or me) are in fact biased. It's not about being honest or nostalgic. It's a game. Everyone has their own experience with a game. It's not science. Everyones criteria can differ. Therefore we are all biased while playing a game.
      I can't say that the game is painstakingly unfinished. It is in my opinion a well wrapped up game for it's time which just has some balancing issues. Issues that gives certain types an advantage or makes certain pokemon more desirable than others.
      I agree with you that the selling numbers of a game is not necessarily a criteria. It's still interesting to have this piece of information in the back of my mind regarding it's impact.

      @hyperstargaming6150 3 года назад

      @@personax5174 I feel like grading a game based on an older time is just a bad approach overall and is a slap in the face to new players who throw their hat in the ring and play Gen 1. When you take time and nostalgia out of the equation, what does the game offer? Games can be excellent down the road as long as they are built well. RPG’s however have a more difficult time handling something like this, because the game’s get improvements with each release. By no fault of Gen 1, it just got worse due to the later games released. Final Fantasy had an excellent way of handling this issue, by making every single game a different story with usually VERY different mechanics to the system, so the older games don’t feel boring or static. Pokémon has just added more and more content since Gen 1 to its newer games. Gen 1 is good. But almost every other Pokémon game is flat out better in every regard to the original.

    • @personax5174
      @personax5174 3 года назад

      @@hyperstargaming6150 I do not believe that grading an older game should be based on showing it for potential new players. Considering the time aspect is a necessity due to the fact that the technological possibilities and other aspects for that specific older game is something that is fixed. Therefore it is only natural that it might feel like a slap in the face for some new players or even if it is not a shock on that level the game might still feel limited because that specific person started with a more modern version of a specific game.
      Putting the time and nostalgia aspect aside, I think there are lots of people who enjoy the Generation 1 games due to it's solid foundation, simplicity, less hand holding and more challenging gameplay compared to modern Pokemon games. There are many more reasons. Generation 1 is not perfect of course. And some things have been improved by modern games. However modern Pokemon games have their own unique problems. Problems that didn't exist in older Pokemon games like Generation 1. Therefore it's a debatable point whether almost every other Pokemon game is flat out better than the first Generation games.
      I think another important aspect is that developers probably don't think about it how the game could feel after 20 years. They have different criteria for their game and try to implement all these aspects in to the game. Your Final Fantasy example is a good one for showing how developers can give you a different experience with the same franchise over the years.

    I think one thing really cool and praise worthy about Gen 1, is the fact that in Yellow version you get access to all the starters of the generation just through natural progression. It can make team building a bit more universal for people (like cmon who is gonna pass up on a Charizard, Venasaur, Blastoise, and your starter Pikachu), but it just really makes it cool to have ALL the starters in one game without a need for trading or two systems/games (especially when breeding wasnt around just yet).
    Also the story in this (and gen 2) didnt feel world shattering. It felt very localized to the region, and something fairly reasonable for the player to encounter on their journey. Taking down a whole criminal organization as a 10 year old is a bit of a stretch, but its not like we were fighting climate god pokemon or a guy trying to erase the world yet. Nostalgia in me would put gen 1 above a C (largely just for Yellow version tbh), but I also 100% understand putting it there as well since some of the old mechancis/bugs are just super duper rough

    I'm all for the story not being so big but Gen 1 "story" is just nothing. TR is the only real story here and they are just evil. That works for gen 1 sure but it's nothing good per say. For it's time sure but now a days its sp boring, even when trying to add more in FR and LG or let's go they were still really boring

    In my opinion
    Gen 1 >>>>>>>Gen 2
    If Psychic type is broken in Gen 1, is worse in Gen 2 where the 2 types introduced to counter Psychics have practically no counters in Gen 2: Dark and Steel. Also, the competitevely is all about spikes and rapid spin. People tend to underrating Gen 1 and overrating Gen 2.

    I do think you missed out on the lore and mystery the games presented (though some of that existed more from playground and kids playing around more than just the story), but I overall agree with the review.
    I think people exaggerate the favoritism Gen 1 gets (think about it, it was during the 20th anniversary, plus it was Kanto's turn for a remake, PLUS the first game on a Switch needed to be simple so they couldn't screw it up and Kanto was the best gen to experiment a few things on).
    Outside of Gen 7, which fit those criteria, Kanto isn't as over blown as people claim.
    BUT, that doesn't mean Gen 1 was perfect nor was it the best generation (my personal favorite is actually Gen 8 and Gen 3). I think it was amazing considering the situation and the crunch they had.... but it doesn't hold up very well.

    Honestly, gen 1 would have been a mediocre game I'd have played once or twice, but then they removed the debugging tools to be able to fit Mew into the game. These games having near-limitless glitching potential is why I ADORE gen 1, and it would probably be my favorite gen if I had to pick a favorite. Without glitches, I'd say it'd be average, but with the glitches it's spectacular

    I wouldn't consider Wrap to be a bad move, it has very poor power and it's usually only used by low-level early pokemon. The fact that the Gengar family are the ONLY ghost types in the entire game, and they're not even pure ghost, makes the flying type redundancy extra painful.

    OR the way I see it: when a Dual-Type Pokemon gets hit by a certain move it counts them as ONE of their types (neutral effectiveness being recessive), Articuno and Zapdos were actually WEAK to Ice and Electric respectively and Ground was actually super effective on most Grass types (unfair)

    Other than “it said so on tv” my foot. Professor Oak asks his grandson and neighbor, two aspiring Pokémon trainers, to help him complete his research. Blue decides to challenge the Pokémon league and challenges Red to do the same. I can keep going but you have to pay attention in these games and figure things out yourself. They’re a 90’s JRPG featuring Pokémon. These wrote the formula for what a Pokémon game is from scratch. Not the best in the series but you have some borderline disrespectful dismissal of these games I disagree with your “grade” of C and find them to be AT LEAST a B. (Disclaimer: I think Gen 5 is an A)

    I assume the '98 means you were born in '98, eh? As much as I agree with the criticisms of this review, games this old need to be reviewed for their influence/merit at the time. (I'm a '91 baby for context) Yes they were flawed AF, but so are most 1st games in a series, especially back then. They'll never measure up if you didn't play them in the era they were big.
    I treat the OG Pokemon games like the N64 smash bros. Groundbreaking/amazing for the time, but ultimately not worth going back to for anything other than a nostalgia trip.

    My problem with the Pokémon distribution in Gen I is if you chose Charmander in RB there was no reasonable way to get attacks even normally effective against Brock's Rock-Types. Look, I'm not every pokemon player and lots of players actually liked that, but it was a big drawback that made me never consider Charizard in Gen I (remember in Yellow you get Charmander later as a gift of course :p). It seemed liked a poor design choice similar to JPR's example about Wrap that the developers REALLY should have noticed. My criticism didn't even last; Charmander got Iron Tail in FRLG and you have grass/water options in LGPE. I'm just saying it was annoying in the 90's and there's a lot of gray area between Charmander in RB and handing you type advantages like the remakes did. They should have had Yellow's movesets in RB so Mankey and the Nidorans had some fighting type moves, they could have put a psychic type in there and give Butterfree Confusion like it had in Yellow or give some offensive Bug-Type moves to some pokemon considering they put two Bug-type lines that evolve quickly in the Viridian Forest.

I was throwing away TM's just because I couldn't carry stuff any more. Just for that I'll agree with your C rating, even though I think taken in perspective of its time and it being pretty groundbreaking I'd otherwise give it a B+.
