WHEW! Feels good to have this one done! Originally this video was 30 minutes long but I had to trim some of the fat, so forgive me if certain points aren’t as fleshed out (mostly the SwSh DLC), but hey I felt like I got my points across anyhow
The thing I love about legend arceus is that it begin what was missing from pokemon in the first by using battle element similar to adventure where trainer had to avoid pokemon attack and get in a perfect position thown they pokeball and give out the attack to they pokemon
@@fausthanos08 is not really charizard himself. Is just the seemingly unwarranted love charizard gets from gamefreak. Only starter to get two mega evos. The only other pokemon with two is Mewtwo and its the quintessential legendary pokemon with two in its name. And well whatever, its cool. But then two generations later, a whole new pokemon game with new pokemon and mechanics and whose the Ace pokemon of the champion? Charizard... Are you serious? All these new pokemon and we go back to charizard? And it gets a gigantimax? What about Venusaur and Blastoise? And all the other starters? Bruh? So yeah, some people whos favorites never got mega evolutions a tired of this favoritism
The criticism of ORAS really showed in BDSPs development. I think in retrospect we were spoiled with new Megas, new battle teams, new story beats, and character design updates that we secretly had these expectations for BDSP. As someone who played a lot of Sapphire as a kid, I liked how fresh the remakes were with these ideas and tying it to XY. It respected the source and did something cool with it. They held back and put their money & time on PLA. If there was anything that needed the makeover, it was Diamond and Pearl considering 3rd games get the shaft because money. I hope they just respect Unova.
@@AlphaladZXA Fair, I'd rather see that than some retarded ilca "faithful" remake of gen 5.Because at that point, just port the DS version of the game pixel art and all, because at least then it won't be completely ruined.
I genuinely enjoyed Legends Arceus. This game was a true 25th Anniversary gift. It expands the story of my favorite Gen and was completely open world and entertaining. (Not to mention Shiny hunting is so rewarding 🤩)
As a shiny hunter, The Crown Tundra, BDSP and Legends: Arceus combined raise the overall score of Gen 8 by a lot. The base Sword and Shield game is awful for shiny hunting, as the 500 encounter method is severely flawed, but the Dynamax Adventures system introduced in the Crown Tundra expansion makes it worthwhile to spend time shiny hunting in the game. The improved Poke Radar in BDSP is IMO the fastest shiny hunting method in any Pokemon game, as you can keep the chain going and catch multiple shinies of the same species. And Legends: Arceus' Mass Outbreak and Massive Mass Outbreak mechanics are great for catching shinies, but also the Permutation Method and simply randomly encountering shinies makes it very worthwhile to spend time shiny hunting in the game.
@@MoustachioFurioso83 that's why my favourites are the Alola games, they have both. The Alola games are amazing, and until BDSP SOS chaining was the fastest shiny hunting method, so they have it all.
@@MoustachioFurioso83 would much rather play bdsp again over gen 7 personally, there are things i can complain about of course as there are with any game but i had a blast playing new diamond and did tons of post game stuff, pokemon sun and pokemon shield i haven't even finished yet....
Gen 5 is my favourite gen, it’s incredible, the best one by far imo… but if they do to gen 5 dirty in the remake, I’m going to be so disappointed, arguably not only the best pokemon games but also one of the few hens in the last decade that was actually really good
Don't even look forward to the remakes. They'll butcher them like they've been doing with every game after Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. And EVEN IF they SOMEHOW manage to make them good, they'll still never live up to Black and White or their sequels. Just replay the originals. They're the best in the series.
This generation is the most divisive for me. One the one hand, almost all the new pokémon look great and are good in battle, the designs of everything is unique and beautiful, and the easiness to enter competitive is great for younger fans. Plus, Legends Arceus was the unexpected remakes the franchise needed to bring some soul back to it. However, the problems are way to noticeable. With SS, the story doesn’t exist, the lack of voice acting and any real postgame was too much, and the sheer lack of real dungeons and adventuring were so strong that, to this day, I haven’t replayed the game ever since I did 3 runs so to use each starter. With the sinnoh remakes, we all know the problems with BDSP. But for Legends Arceus, I only had some nitpicks but no real bad thing to say of it. Other than the exp system.
Yeah the lack of voice acting bothers me, even with scenes like Rose at the start and Piers doing the song. They said they don’t do it due to Pokemon being translated in many different countries but since the localization happens at the same time, they could do VA as well.
@@IgnitedQuils Yeah, it's still super weird where they have a scene of Piers singing, and there's even sound effects for his toe tapping, and yet no sound is actually coming out of his mouth.
The exp system was actually quite a nice change in my opinion because it made it harder to have an overleveled team unlike in XY. When I arrived to Volo I was WAY behind in term of level and had to grind more which was cool
My major criticisms of gen 8 is that rom hacks and fan games have innovated far better gameplay wise then the official games. I think I'd prefer a game with no flashy additives or even a game with no new Pokémon as long as it had more expansive rpg elements and quality of life improvements.
Tbf any generation can get a cool rom hack that completly remakes the game and improves it. Look at all the different rom hacks out there for older gens, they're awesome.
@@Kyumifun that's true but the fact that this is the latest generation when for years fans have added amazing QoL improvements over that time that gamefreak has not added has to be recognized
I have to hard disagree here. Those "flashy additives" did make the games better. And BD/SP's poor reception is proof. They kept gimmicks out of the game and what we got was an overly faithful bore of a game. OR/AS did as well as it did because it gave us mega evolution which improved every aspect of the gameplay. If the situations were reversed, I guarantee you that OR/AS would be the game everyone complains about. It's just so baffling that they didn't bring it back for BDSP not only because so many prominent trainers would be viable mega candidates, but also because the game's theme is evolution and mega evolution would be the next natural step in that research. This game NEEDED megas and they didn't get any because the dumb fan base kept whining about them.
@@dustinvance243 you are just flat out wrong adding any kind of gimmick would have just made them even worse bdsp was just bad on so many level's and for the record i loved mega's
@@kotzer71 you're sending very mixed signals here. If you like megas then why are you saying they'd be a bad idea? BD/SP needed something to spice things up and mega evolution would have been the perfect answer.
For me the only thing that makes BDSP worth buying is the improved Poke Radar system. By tweaking how the Poke Radar mechanic works it makes it an extremely good shiny hunting method. I was able to catch as many as 9 shinies of the same species in just one chain, and in just a few months I was able to successfully Poke Radar chain every shiny I needed to fill in gaps in my living shiny dex. Plus, we were finally given the chance to shiny hunt 3 different Mythical Pokemon in Shaymin, Darkrai and Arceus.
Shiny hunting the mythicals and getting ribbons for my cool mons is the only thing what keeps me playing bdsp, the friendship constantly being on and having to buy herbs and take damage to use them just to have abit of a challenge made it extremely boring to playthrough.
I agree with you on BD/SP. I loved SW/SD even though it has all its quarks. I go back and play them but I have figured out some fun stuff to do like get a Charizard at lvl 20. I really liked Arceus not much more to say.
While this generation was a mixed bag, I like how distinct each game felt instead of looking somewhat homogeneous like prior Gens. A continuation on the style established in the 3DS era, a return to traditional Pokémon, and a breath of fresh air with the most different Pokémon game to date I love PLA, but I also generally enjoy SwSh and BDSP even though I too have my problems with both games (I actually still play BDSP even to this day)
I mean it's not a mixed bag really, there are two games that are walking garbage and the last one sacrifices online and battles for more technical gameplay no games in Gen 8 are worth buying.
@@abarette_ that just your opinion. Everyone has them, so instead of ’’each game not being worth buying’’ its just YOUR opinion that people shouldn’t buy them.
@@Cigmacica my opinion is not that people shouldn't have bought them?? I got scammed into buying PLA too, but I'm just saying none of the Gen 8 games are worth buying - because it's true.
Honestly, its refreshing to see someone who understands that pokemon is so behind every other video game franchise, and the problem is getting worse. Arceus gave us hope but until there's a new console, it's pointless.
And that Pokémon is the highest media franchise. Yeah most of the money is from merchandise but Pokemon is and always have been a video game franchise, and will be first. I feel like more funding or resources could be implemented. They most likely are but the most common criticisms are still there, even for Arceus. But I still love Pokémon.
Just remember, Arceus and Scarlet/Violet were being overlapped in development so I think it’s unlikely that SV will have all the good changes Arceus made
I stop caring about Pokemon around Gen. 7. Ever since Gen. 6, I started to get bored of the franchise because of there low quality ( Though I wanted to play the Gen. 3 remake to see if I like it more than the originals ) and while Gen. 7 does start off rough, but decent in Sun & Moon, I started getting depressed with USUM when they decided to recon the original version by making an " enhanced " version rather than an sequel or DLC and there wasn't anything that it enhanced on. It seems worst; aside adding more Pokemons and having postgame that isn't really that great. I wanted an Pokemon game that's put in effort, having good quality and most importantly, having fun. But none of the modern Pokemon games are working with me. I'm hoping Gen. 9 will fixed it.
@@its_Tsuki_ keep in mind that this is set in Sinnoh's ancient past, so it did make sense, people back then where more so intimidated by Pokémon in the wild, so both humans and Pokémon didn't yet learn to live together
Gen 8, despite all the controversy, was an amazing experience for me. I've spent hours in SwSh exploring the Wild Area, which along with the cities and routes in Galar were an immersive and memorable experience. BDSP might have missed a LOT of expectations but at least I had a good nostalgia trip for the 2 months before LA came out (and I can pretend the Azure Flute, Oak's Letter, and Member Card events were finally distributed for DP). And speaking of which, LA was the perfect finale. It might not be perfect, but it was definitely the most fun I've had playing a Pokémon game in recent years. The gameplay, the region, the characters, the not-so-subtle references to the previous titles, the music are absolutely amazing. Not to mention how much personality each individual Pokémon species have! I can tell the people at Game Freak poured their hearts into this game and I appreciate every last bit of it.
Gen 8 is like a raisin cookie. You were promised a delicious cookie and you see from afar that its a delicious chocolate chip cookie. But when you walk up too it you smell something a little off but upon noticing the shopkeep tells you they just brought in a fresh new made batch of cookies you ease up a bit because his forfathers have owned the shop for centuries and your parents swear by them. However upon biting into the cookie you realise that its not chocolate chip but reused raisins that were from a leftover batch years prior when you see the box on top of the dusty shelves of the legacy Display Shelf
I remember how in Legends I caught Alpha Lucario as soon as I got access to that area. Didn’t know Alpha Lucario was up there, I was just exploring before continuing the main story and I encountered it, being about 30-40 levels higher than my current team. The thrill of sneaking up on it and catching it on my first attempt was stellar. Then the rest of the game was a cake walk for the most part.
I feel like they should’ve handled the Alphas like the “strong looking” Pokemon in SwSh where you just weren’t allowed to catch them until you’ve progressed enough
Sw/Sd is a mix bag. It had an awesome soundtrack, cool new Pokémon, the competitive scene and the characters are pretty good but the story, the evil team, the main villain, and Gigantamax is completely trash. Legends Arceus on the other hand is the best game out the generation 8 mostly because it catching mechanics is really fun, seeing a somewhat open world is kind of cool and each Pokémon have a new model so it didn’t feel like the same generic models from the 3Ds games.
Yeah it remembers me about Kalos, which was a good gen for competitive, and with new mechanics that would change Pokémon forever but the story was trash
The funny thing is at least to me, a kaiju battle isnt that bad but this gimmick that allows everything to be able to do is wild to me. Seems like one of the point of the franchise is that theyre pocket sized compared to the giant skyscraper kaijus in most media. Being in a dynamax battle just seemed kinda silly with the amount of power it allows you. The lore implies the darkest day was this catastrophic event involving dynamax that almost destroyed the region but lets give access to anyone who wants to be a trainer. Galar is incredibly lucky they dont have any evil teams who would abuse this.
oooooh glad to see this series continue!! Been waiting for this one haha As for my experience, SwSh was fun, and while I love the overall art-style, the designs of the cities and the music of the game, the story and the region felt too shallow compared to Gen 5 or 7, but it was otherwise enjoyable. The horrible draw distance and some minor graphical issues were a shame, but no deal breakers for me. The DLC was extremely fun and refreshing, especially the Crown Tundra. BDSP was just a lazy remaster of DP, and the only thing I liked about it was the difficulty in the League, it was an insane nuzlocke experience, and it was breathtaking, but otherwise cannot dethrone Platinum as the best Sinnoh experience. Legends Arceus was insanely fun, I had so many times in my first playthrough with my mouth wide open, going "oooooh this is DOPE!!", and of course Volo bits were incredibly enjoyable, but it's the least replayable game out of the three imo, since you gotta get through so many tutorials, cutscenes and research to keep progressing in the story, but I can forgive that, since the immense amount of enjoyment it gave me the first time around can't be matched by SwSh and BDSP. This game frickin ROCKS :)
Legends Arceus was amazing and I hope later games in the series take cues from it. Sword and Shield were fine, but they did feel incomplete without the DLC. The way Dynamax was integrated in to the story was magnificent; it was a far cry from how Megas were handled in X&Y. I also love how they integrated the game specific mechanics in to the story by having the climactic battle against Eternatus be a Max Raid battle. BDSP I only got because I lost my diamond cart years ago. I still think they could have just made a switch port of platinum and that would have been enough; it didn't change enough to really justify the remake.
My feelings toward this generation is overall positive. Sure, SwSh’s story isn’t too good, but there’s a reason why Sword is my most played game on the system. I’ve spent so much time with competitive breeding, max raids, and to a lesser extent shiny hunting, and I don’t regret it. For Legends Arceus [Arkoos], it was a nice fresh experience, and it’s pretty fun. Admittedly I haven’t completed the Dex yet, but I’m almost there. As for BDSP, I’m currently working through it after dropping it at the end of the year, and I’m grinding for the elite 4. I don’t really care about the artstyle or graphics (similar for the other games), but I have run into some problems along the way. The underground somewhat makes up for the DP dex limit, but keeping evolution items until late game (or even post-game) is pretty frustrating (for me it was the shiny and dusk stones). The extended 360 movement doesn’t fit too well with the grid-based layout and can lead to some frustrations with narrow corners. And while I haven’t faced the elite 4 yet, I have heard about the huge spike, which is why I’m grinding my team to level 70. But despite the flaws, I can still find some fun. Id say the Grand Underground is the best part of the game, not only due to the hideaways expanding the dex, but also because of the wide range of items you can dig up; I have about 20 heart scales in my bag, and I’ve already used a few previously. So overall, I’ve had a positive experience with Gen 8, but I’m still hoping the next one will be even better. Sorry this comment was so long, but if you made it to the end, have a great day.
Maybe because I never played Platinum, but I really liked BD SP. I recognize the issues you bring up but I still enjoyed the playthrough quite a bit and the three levels of pokemon league are just amazing.
With how many tools you’re given to help you raise your team in Sword and Shield, some pushback should have been included at least as an option you could turn off or on. Level scaling so you can’t sweep opponents through overlevelling, or simply being able to turn off the EXP Share (a function that’s been in previous games so it’s not a great deal of effort to code in).
Agree with a lot of the takes from the rage at BDSP, appreciating but being ready to move on from dynamax (the Galar pokemon themselves are incredible, though!), and the pure fun and positive trajectory that PLA gave us in terms of giving the franchise a breath of fresh air and good foundation for future entries
This is where the divide seems to be happening, seperating fans of the simple, classic Pokemon formula and what appears to be the future of the series. For me personally, barring EXP Share and P;atinum content I find Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl to be the dream Pokemon games that I'd longed for as a child, and hoped the future would be like: formulaic, charming, simple, predictable, yet beautiful in that, with 3D battles, full 360 degree movement, etc. That said, I'm not totally without hope at this moment: hopefully Scarlet and Violet can bridge the divide between tradition and innovation in a creative way that doesn't divide the fanbase between the dwindling fans of the older style and the growing fans of the new era.
If I had to give the gen a number rating I'd go: SwSh (just base game): 3/10 BDSP: 2/10 Legends: 7/10 So overall a 4/10. Some good ideas but pretty poor execution imo
Legends: Arceus is 9.5/10 at least! It's the biggest leap forward any Pokemon game has ever taken, and we should strongly encourage the franchise to keep going in that direction.
Hm always weird to hear this. When u guys play sw/sh or bdsp do u not do the online battling/breeding parts of the game? Ofc gen 8 has the timer issue but still competitive in sword and shield imo was almost as fun as gen 6 competitive.
I understand that Sword is a flawed game with the graphics and story. But it's the first pokemon game I ever played, so it will always have a special place in my heart
That rant about bdsp was hilarious, but I do have to say: I actually never played diamond and pearl before, so it was an alright fun enough game for me. (Liked it better that sword and shield, propably because those in my mind left more potential untapped).
3:30 was very well said. I one-shotted Kabu's Gigantamax Centiskorch with a Max Rockfall from my Drednaw. Sure I had 6x damage on my side but it just made my first exposure to Gmax feel meh
10:04 all of that would've happened (spending more time to polish the game) if the dex cut was planned from the start imo Also you forgot that BDSP ruined Home's Coding
For all the issues of SW and SH I have to give it props for its Pokemon designs. Pokes like the Galarian versions of the Kanto birds, Toxitricy, Urshifu, Falinks, Wooloo and Dragopult are Awesome designed pokemon
Personal opinion incoming: Many fans of video games have been spoiled by the games that go for as realistically looking as possible. Now, many want all games to look that realistic. Give ten years, and the realistic games will not look good anymore. The games that will look good are the ones that were stylized. Pokémon is a stylized game. It’s art style will look better in the long run. I just do not like when people say that Pokémon looks bad when it is stylized to look timeless. (And I don’t want anyone saying that there is a game from ten years ago that still looks amazing because that is the exception not the rule.) This is just my opinion.
Sw/Sh: way better than the critics would have you believe. BD/SP: this didnt need to be a thing. PLA: initially its quite good, but its flaws become apparent after a few days.
Just played Sword and I absolutely loved it. The whole 3D experience, open areas, maxing the pokemon, all felt great. Also this was the first game I played on a legit console (without an emulator), so was a new and exciting experience for me. Having said that, now I think about it the map was really sad and the story was thin as hell. There was also barely any side quest stuff that is usually exciting. Overall though I tremendously enjoyed it, just unhappy the Isle is yet another expensive DLC.
Wow its so weird how I agree 100% with you on Sword and Shield, you're absolutely right about more time in the oven I literally use that phrase each time I talk abt these games. This is really great critique, all around
IMO Dynamax was so much fun in doubles and VGC! As a vgc format player I quite liked SW SH after I fell out during gen 7. I played single battles last in gen 6 and honestly, they brontosaurus seem nearly as stimulating
I have enjoyed legends arceus just like how k enjoyed gold and silver when I was 7.it took a long time for them to make a pokemon game really enjoyable like legends arceus.ifts music feels so nostalgic its battle system catching mechanics and non linearity exponentially improves its enjoyability. It almost took me 100 hours of game time to completely finish the game and was one of my best 100 hours of my life.
sword and shield was my first original pokemon region (lets go was my FIRST main series game) and i dont like how much hate it gets, this is my favorite region and i'm glad you dont also hate kt
I bought Sword used because the base game just isn't worth full price, it might be worth playing for shiny hunting and raid events; I didn't bother with the "remakes", why would I buy an incomplete remaster of a game that I already played at full price? I got Legends Arceus because it's a FUN game that changed so many things that we knew about Pokémon games, and as someone who doesn't like multiplayer games very much, it saved Gen 8 for me.
I feel like swsh dlc and wild area, along with legends Arceus, were mainly designed as proof of concept for gen 9's open world scarlet and violet. Also, I actually didn't mind brilliant diamond, but that's probably just because I never played d/p or platinum.
With SWSH, I do agree with how variable the Pokemon you can get early on is good and the amount of new Pokémon and regional forms feel well distributed. I agree with how bland the region is; yes it’s based on the entire United Kingdom but I felt like it could have been like Hoenn due to the mini dungeons and having to backtrack to places (like going back to Petalburg). EDIT: The battle timer bothers me due to the things you said, that even Shofu and Pokeaim made responses to get rid of that. And the Battle Recorder being gone despite VGC being a thing, the heck? I haven’t played Legends and BDSP but for BDSP, it having the same levels and Pokemon that the trainers have (thanks to the regional dex), not borrowing an element from Platinum aside from the Rotom forms and clothes, the permanent EXP share, coupled with the friendship mechanic that lets your Pokémon survive hits makes it feel imbalanced. DP is half baked and the remakes not really trying to rectify that, unless you count the Grand Underground, makes you confused when looking at previous remakes.
Ah yes, some absolutely brilliant variery: 1. An Unfinished 3DS game ported to the Switch. 2. A VERY terrible """remake""" with a HUGE bullshit difficulty spike at the league. 3. A fun game with great potential that was held back by certain aspects of it. At least it's Good.
The saving grace I hoped from BDSP was the possibility of a Gen 1-4 dex for VGC with modern mechanics. I was excited to build a Granbull Assault Vest Trick Room team but immediately jumped ship when I realized that all the QoL changes to getting a Pokemon to competitive readiness was gone, ON TOP of all the new items. Assault Vest? Gone. Eviolite? Gone. All of it was G O N E gone! I was really hoping for a saving grace. But in the end, I was left with nothing.
2:55 - tbh Legends brought back the REAL cross-gen evos that weren't excluded only to regional forms. Like there's no hisuian Stantler or Ursaring to evolve even further. I know they still have to evolve in THE region, but this will be probably changed with SV (hopefully).
it likely will be changed so where you just use a peat block on ursaring at night, and then for stantler it just needs to level-up while knowing Psyshield Bash white-stripped basculin is likely to not change, hisuian sneasel will likely evolve the same way as Johtonian sneasel (albeit at a different time of day), hisuian qwilfish will be the same change as stantler, and kleavor will very likely turn into a trade evo
Honestly I think Legends should be a new permanent addition to the main series Here's hoping for a Legends Kyurem or Legends Hoenn? Either way I'm excited for the future prospects PLA has opened
@@FTChomp9980 I think a Legends Kyurem is the most logical next Legends game but GF doesn't always pick the logical choice lol If/when Megas are back in the main series I'd like to see a Legends Floette or Legends Rayquaza focusing on the 3000 year war or the direct aftermatch and the ancient Draconid people
I think BDSP being (overly) faithful can be attributed to it being made by ILCA. It was their first Pokémon game. They didn't know fans wouldn't like overly faithful remakes. Also, as much as the loud minority loves Platinum, it's actually one of the worst selling core series games in Pokémon.
@@jaretco6423 Not the worst selling one (that one would be Crystal), but DP sold 10 million copies more than Platinum. Third versions aren't as popular as the main pairs of games.

Actually I think that Sword and Shield are really good games because they were ambitious and while the execution isn't great it isn't bad either. Me personally, I actually liked BDSP. I completed the main story fairly quickly, I shiny hunted a bit, and I completed the dex (minus deoxys and celebi) in SP. Besides LA, if I’m bored this is a good game for me to just chillax and shiny hunt or grind a mon to lvl 100. I prefer LA over BDSP, but to me I don’t see the hate where most people do
They're pretty much just Diamond and Pearl, which are still really solid games. But they also made some weird choices with regards to changing them, and I think most people would have just been satisfied with a port instead of a remake.
Honestly I really love legends arceus but a point I disagree with in the video you made is that PLA incentivizes you to catch. It did that for me for like the first 100 hours. But I truly wish I could just battle with my Pokémon online. Yes you can make the argument about Pokémon home but I shouldn’t have to buy a separate subscription for that. Scarlet and Violet could fix this issue tho… Gen 9 might genuinely become the best generation
I’d say gen 8 could’ve been better with finally getting itself together at the end. I liked galar but the structure of gyms were disappointing because I liked the look and idea but some gyms were just yeah do a team. Battle 3 times. Gen4 remakes are meh and I already don’t like dpp but wanted to get a new light but it’s so under I just couldn’t care to go through the elite 4 because it’s such a spike compared to the rest of the game Legends atleast gave a new formula and that gets the pass for jank but it’s not for the most part It was like a well done steak. It’s a steak but it’s not that good unless you drown it in sauce
Call me crazy. But is it possible that not enough people appreciate the art of the Pok'emon battle. Hints the reason why we haven't gotten more than 2 battle facilities with unique styles of battling in main line Pok'emon games sense gen 6?
Tbf the most problem I had with sword and sheld is the Pokémon not being there for me greninja is one of my favorite pokemons so obviously I’m going to be bias that greninja is not there but it’s not as bad as people made it out to be because for me it meant I got to use new Pokémon I would’ve never used but hopefully in the new Pokémon games they add every Pokémon again
To me, i generally have a personal rule that I avoid using pokemon on my team IF i have used them before, I also usually try to use pokemon introduced that gen...which has led to some issues with team building (which is why in gen 9 i'm gonna try to use a mix of old and new, likely not gonna be 50-50 but who knows). I'm also fine with the cut to the national dex as inside, I felt like it was gonna happen eventually with how many we have now, also don't expect the National Dex to be back in gen 9, since they stated this is gonna be the case going forward starting with gen 8, so don't get your hopes up here
@@bulborb8756 it shouldn't need to happen tho, as several pokemon are barely a few bytes large making it a self-imposed issue in regards to the dumbass that made that ridiculous decision. I'm not saying that every pokemon absolutely needs to be shoved into the main or post game, I'm just saying that the dex cut in general is just unnecessary
I actually didn't mind swsh personally. I think it could've been better of course and let us turn off the dang exp share but it was overall enjoyable. Had no interest in playing bdsp since I already have platinum and regularly replay it. Legends Arceus I feel like I'm the only one that doesn't like it. I notoriously have a distaste for open worlds amongst those who know me. I dislike the lack of direction and progression. Then added on to the fact that the main focus of the game is catching Pokémon and that's not really what I play the games for. So unlike most I hope the mainline games don't follow it's lead. I would be fine with a spin-off series being started for it so legends doesn't permeate the experience I love about Pokémon.
Legends Arceus is honestly the first Pokemon game I've 100%. Never before did I ever have the motivation to complete the Pokedex in a Pokemon game. In SP I beat the league and didn't pick it up since, the only reason i finished the regional dex is cause I transferred from Legends. In sword I went back and did it after.
JPR just wanted to say I agree with a lot you had to say here. I've heard you say a lot about this generation, a good amount negative, but I found everything in this video very fair and reasonable. It wasn't the best gen but it really wasn't the worst gen, not by a long shot.
I think sword and shield suffers from being the generation during the pandemic. However this generation has the most variety between games, each game contributes something different which makes it stand out by having the most variety in gameplay.
Sword and Shield was a controversial game as is but overall despite its flaws I love the variety of new Pokemon. BDSP was a rushed mess. And Pokemon Legends Arceus is a Pokemon experience is really good.
of course the National Dex isn't ever coming back, and tbh with 905 total pokemon right now, the removal of it was bound to happen. also the fact they gave an evolution to the forgettable stantler show's they can still do new evolutions to older mon's since they also gave ones to ursaring, basculin (albeit for 1 form and with a seriously wtf summoning method), qwilfish & sneasel (from their regional forms) and even to scyther
BDSP's disappointing result can be traced to the fact it was not developed by Game Freak but instead ILCA (first mainline pokemon game developed) Not trying to defend BDSP, I am just stating a fact Had BDSP been developed by Game Freak it would be less disappointing.
but at the same time...would they really have been able to handle that extra workload since Game Freak was working on Legends and on Gen 9 so their resources where already stretched
Story in Arceus was great, was it basically Mystery Dungeon...yeah but it's a good story. But kinda crazy that there was no post story where we try to send the protagonist back to their time.
I honestly loved Sword and Shield. They are my favourite 3D Pokémon games and they had me hooked for a really long time after I beat the game with Raid events and mystery gift distributions.
I feel like recent games especially 3d era of pokemon had been emulator the anime more over time that thing had been lost in translation to this point
Release the JPR cut !
Let’s be honest legends arceus saved gen 8 (kinda)
Yes I agree that BDSP sucks bad but as someone who has never played platinum or the originals I feel attached to that game
Legends Arceus is still such a groundbreaking title because it's one of the only games ask the question: "What if Charizard wasn't in this game?"
Im effing dead 😭😭😭
😂😂😂
I didn’t even notice that charzard was removed
Why do people hate charizard lol
I don't even want gen 5 remakes, just give me pokemon legends kyurem
Oras is awesome
@@AlphaladZXA Fair, I'd rather see that than some retarded ilca "faithful" remake of gen 5.Because at that point, just port the DS version of the game pixel art and all, because at least then it won't be completely ruined.
Instead of black and white remakes why not black3 and white3?
@@ijmillares9005 where would you even go after B2W2?
I genuinely enjoyed Legends Arceus. This game was a true 25th Anniversary gift. It expands the story of my favorite Gen and was completely open world and entertaining. (Not to mention Shiny hunting is so rewarding 🤩)
Best part of sinnoh includes being post game locked if you don’t battle the one trainer with a drifloon
This was me back in 2007 since I had no idea a wild one spawned at Valley Windworks on Fridays
This happened to me 😂
I was beyond disappointed when I saw that spikemouth was literally just a hallway. No where to explore. Nothing to do postgame. GIGANTIC WASTE.
I would rather have a hard time finding shinies in a good game than an easy time finding them in a bad game, but you do you.
@@MoustachioFurioso83 that's why my favourites are the Alola games, they have both. The Alola games are amazing, and until BDSP SOS chaining was the fastest shiny hunting method, so they have it all.
@@MoustachioFurioso83 you mean SWSH a good game with Masuda method? I agree
@@MoustachioFurioso83 would much rather play bdsp again over gen 7 personally, there are things i can complain about of course as there are with any game but i had a blast playing new diamond and did tons of post game stuff, pokemon sun and pokemon shield i haven't even finished yet....
Gen 5 is my favourite gen, it’s incredible, the best one by far imo… but if they do to gen 5 dirty in the remake, I’m going to be so disappointed, arguably not only the best pokemon games but also one of the few hens in the last decade that was actually really good
Also, they are some of the only games where Pikachu doesn't exist. :)
As someone who got stuck with Gligar for the entire Brilliant Diamond playthrough, I felt so validated when you used that example
@@IgnitedQuils yeah, plus they’ve done voice acting before. Look at BOTW and Mario games.
The Volo effect lives?
In Volo we trust 🙏
In others words, Legends Arceus carried Gen 8.
It saved Gen 8 and the main series Switch games in general
Nah Swsh is good its just bdsp thats garbage
And arceus is also good
Gen 8 went 2/3
@@ReidnReactn I think the same here.
@@ReidnReactnSword and Shield are also garbage.
@@jaretco6423 those things are minor improvements and don't make the game worth buying.
A continuation on the style established in the 3DS era, a return to traditional Pokémon, and a breath of fresh air with the most different Pokémon game to date
I love PLA, but I also generally enjoy SwSh and BDSP even though I too have my problems with both games (I actually still play BDSP even to this day)
I mean it's not a mixed bag really, there are two games that are walking garbage and the last one sacrifices online and battles for more technical gameplay
no games in Gen 8 are worth buying.
@@Cigmacica Nah gen 8 sucked, every game was garbage or mid.
… I can get SwSh, but BDSP? Why? Why not just play Platinum instead?
Honestly, its refreshing to see someone who understands that pokemon is so behind every other video game franchise, and the problem is getting worse. Arceus gave us hope but until there's a new console, it's pointless.
And that Pokémon is the highest media franchise. Yeah most of the money is from merchandise but Pokemon is and always have been a video game franchise, and will be first.
I feel like more funding or resources could be implemented. They most likely are but the most common criticisms are still there, even for Arceus. But I still love Pokémon.
@@IgnitedQuils it will always be my favorite game series, but it's hard to watch lol
@@CJMcG Same here. I still have hope but it’s still confusing.
I wasn't a huge fan of Legends Arceus myself. The world felt so dead.
Just like sword & shield. Arceus was a goofball game
I love pokemon games cause the regions feel so alive. But in Arceus it was just bleh everywhere you look
@@its_Tsuki_ keep in mind that this is set in Sinnoh's ancient past, so it did make sense, people back then where more so intimidated by Pokémon in the wild, so both humans and Pokémon didn't yet learn to live together
@@bulborb8756 well said
Same I was forcing myself to play it to get a shiny arceus in BDSP
Agree with this
I remember how in Legends I caught Alpha Lucario as soon as I got access to that area.
I haven't had as much fun in a pokemon game as I had in Arceus since Gen 2.
When I was 10.
Interacting directly with the pokemon was so much fun
Gigantimax designs were better than Mega designs imo
Been waiting for this one haha
As for my experience, SwSh was fun, and while I love the overall art-style, the designs of the cities and the music of the game, the story and the region felt too shallow compared to Gen 5 or 7, but it was otherwise enjoyable.
Legends Arceus is the most innovative and imo, best game Game Freak had ever given us
My feelings toward this generation is overall positive.
I feel like the spin-offs like the returning Pokémon snap and mystery dungeon carried the generation
It’s sad how gen 8 was basically carried by legends arceus 😂
Gen 8 is the gen where I started playing pokemon for the first time, and I really love it just for that alone
Almost feels like people just wanna move on from swsh just like how street fighter fans want to from SF5 to 6
This is where the divide seems to be happening, seperating fans of the simple, classic Pokemon formula and what appears to be the future of the series.
If I had to give the gen a number rating I'd go:
SwSh (just base game): 3/10
BDSP: 2/10
Legends: 7/10
So overall a 4/10. Some good ideas but pretty poor execution imo
Legends: Arceus is 9.5/10 at least! It's the biggest leap forward any Pokemon game has ever taken, and we should strongly encourage the franchise to keep going in that direction.
@@PoolKid75 Yes, we should, but just that alone isn't enough to magically make all the flaws of PLA go away.
10:04 all of that would've happened (spending more time to polish the game) if the dex cut was planned from the start imo
Also you forgot that BDSP ruined Home's Coding
Man, you went off SO HARD on BDSP, I could feel the frustration! Hope it was a bit cathartic saying all that, great video!
For all the issues of SW and SH I have to give it props for its Pokemon designs. Pokes like the Galarian versions of the Kanto birds, Toxitricy, Urshifu, Falinks, Wooloo and Dragopult are Awesome designed pokemon
Not only that the references to the region its based on is probably some of the best in the franchise
9:42 "there are *shining* moments of *brilliant* presentation here" i see you
Wow its so weird how I agree 100% with you on Sword and Shield, you're absolutely right about more time in the oven I literally use that phrase each time I talk abt these games. This is really great critique, all around
Personally I really like gen 8 as a whole and it is one of my favourite regions/games however it is not without its flaws.
IMO Dynamax was so much fun in doubles and VGC! As a vgc format player I quite liked SW SH after I fell out during gen 7. I played single battles last in gen 6 and honestly, they brontosaurus seem nearly as stimulating
Gen 8 is probably my second favorite Gen since I love SWSh, and BDSP is a top 5 game for me easily
Unfortunately “go play platinum” isnt the most widely accessible option for most people
The diamond and pearl remakes make me really worried for when Nintendo decides to remake black and white
SwSh DLC included were the best games in gen 8 and I’ll die on that hill
I was so disappointed when the contests were changed imagine 4 people in the acting contests and all the mind games you could play with each other
In a few years, at the end of Gen 9, we need a Gen 9 review
i think the variety should bump the letter grade up a notch. there's something for everyone this gen.
Ah yes, some absolutely brilliant variery:
1. An Unfinished 3DS game ported to the Switch.
2. A VERY terrible """remake""" with a HUGE bullshit difficulty spike at the league.
3. A fun game with great potential that was held back by certain aspects of it.
At least it's Good.
12:56 BURN!!
13:45 Pokémon Platinum!!
18:21 TRUE!
I’m so over the BDSP slander. That was an appetizer of faithful nostalgia before our main course in Legends…..yall don’t deserve the Sinnoh region. 😤
8:32 Theme of growth and passing the torch….I wonder if the anime will fellow that theme
2:55 - tbh Legends brought back the REAL cross-gen evos that weren't excluded only to regional forms. Like there's no hisuian Stantler or Ursaring to evolve even further. I know they still have to evolve in THE region, but this will be probably changed with SV (hopefully).
it likely will be changed so where you just use a peat block on ursaring at night, and then for stantler it just needs to level-up while knowing Psyshield Bash
white-stripped basculin is likely to not change, hisuian sneasel will likely evolve the same way as Johtonian sneasel (albeit at a different time of day), hisuian qwilfish will be the same change as stantler, and kleavor will very likely turn into a trade evo
Somewhere Kaito on Twitter is currently drafting a 12 page essay about how your takes on Gen 8 are wrong and how Sword and Shield are nuanced 😂
This is a great review! Broke it all down Very nicely. Though I'd give the generation a B- just because I love Arceus so much. lol
19:05 new rivlas, as you fight for survival nothing can stop you diamond and pearl 🎶
Are you gonna do a gen 9 review after Legends Z-A comes out
Honestly I think Legends should be a new permanent addition to the main series
Here's hoping for a Legends Kyurem or Legends Hoenn? Either way I'm excited for the future prospects PLA has opened
I would love a Legends Kyruem game!
@@FTChomp9980 I think a Legends Kyurem is the most logical next Legends game but GF doesn't always pick the logical choice lol
If/when Megas are back in the main series I'd like to see a Legends Floette or Legends Rayquaza focusing on the 3000 year war or the direct aftermatch and the ancient Draconid people
Legends Zygarde, the pokemon war and deaths please
Great review and analysis.
Really? Platinum is the worst selling Pokemon game. Odd.
@@jaretco6423 Not the worst selling one (that one would be Crystal), but DP sold 10 million copies more than Platinum. Third versions aren't as popular as the main pairs of games.
@@wikiuser92 Huh. That is weird. U would think that one of; if not, the most popular Pokemon game would sold alot. Maybe not as much as Gen. 1 or even Gen. 2. But still.
@@jaretco6423 A lot of people got D&P when they came out, and didn't feel the need to buy it a second time a year later.
@@jaretco6423 Guess it's the question of the loud minority vs silent majority. The silent majority are the bulk of the people who buy the games but don't express their opinions online (not at least in ways that would get a lot of attention), while the loud minority is made of the people who make their voices of the games heard online, but don't exactly form a notable portion of the people who buy the games.
Actually I think that Sword and Shield are really good games because they were ambitious and while the execution isn't great it isn't bad either. For me BDSP are bad games due to lack of ambitions and the changes weren't really for the better. Legends: Arceus is near flawless game and I'm happy that Scarlet and Violet are taking inspirations from this
And SV is even worse than BDSP.
@@Irrelevance256 no. They have technical issues but it is far from the worst attempt in the open world game. It is really fun and at least it has ambitions and rational difficulty spikes assuming that you don't go for level 50 Pokemon with a beginner team. Also the characters and stories are really good
@@milesedgeworth8683 nah Sv is good and while i like swsh better the problems with sv are crazy
Bdsp is hot ASS
But people were saying sv is good without all the buggs glitches and graphic issues but thats the problem
The buggs got so bad it impeded my ability to even play the game off and online raids didnt even function properly alot of the time
The characters are ok(some r good)
The music is decent
But the battles are all VERY EASY especially the champion
Swsh had hard battles like leon and mustard
And The Pokémon design in swsh is some of the best in the franchise along with the music
"Routes are easier to get through than a McDonald's drive-through"
my dude, I want you to take me to a drive-through of my choosing, then say that again
people need to realize these are not just single player games there are multiple online formats surrounding these that are basically there own games
@@Stinkoman87 a port of PLATINUM would've been amazing
Honestly I really love legends arceus but a point I disagree with in the video you made is that PLA incentivizes you to catch. It did that for me for like the first 100 hours. But I truly wish I could just battle with my Pokémon online. Yes you can make the argument about Pokémon home but I shouldn’t have to buy a separate subscription for that. Scarlet and Violet could fix this issue tho… Gen 9 might genuinely become the best generation
This is a fair and honest review which I can agree with
I’d say gen 8 could’ve been better with finally getting itself together at the end. I liked galar but the structure of gyms were disappointing because I liked the look and idea but some gyms were just yeah do a team. Battle 3 times.
Gen4 remakes are meh and I already don’t like dpp but wanted to get a new light but it’s so under I just couldn’t care to go through the elite 4 because it’s such a spike compared to the rest of the game
Legends atleast gave a new formula and that gets the pass for jank but it’s not for the most part
It was like a well done steak.
Great vid as always! But do me one favor.. flip that screen of your mic so that the letters are in their normal position 😅
My local McDonald's actually has a drive through that merges so yeah, the Galar routes are easier than a McDonald's drive through.
BDSP is the game the Pokemon community deserved after the hissy fit thrown over everything SWSH
SwSh 8/10
DLC 8/10
BDSP 6/10
PLA 9/10
Legend gave me hope for gen 9 and gen 9 is actually looking great and amazing
Your reviews are awesome!
the song at the begining of the video is pretty good, what is the name of it?
Legends Arceus is honestly the first Pokemon game I've 100%. Never before did I ever have the motivation to complete the Pokedex in a Pokemon game.
In SP I beat the league and didn't pick it up since, the only reason i finished the regional dex is cause I transferred from Legends.
In sword I went back and did it after.

Hello Juanks
JPR just wanted to say I agree with a lot you had to say here. I've heard you say a lot about this generation, a good amount negative, but I found everything in this video very fair and reasonable. It wasn't the best gen but it really wasn't the worst gen, not by a long shot.
Sword and shield was my first 3D pokemon game i recently got it and a switch. Have a blast with it so much
I think sword and shield suffers from being the generation during the pandemic. However this generation has the most variety between games, each game contributes something different which makes it stand out by having the most variety in gameplay.
Alternate title: 16 minutes of valid complaints and 4 minutes of praise
BDSP's disappointing result can be traced to the fact it was not developed by Game Freak but instead ILCA (first mainline pokemon game developed)
Not trying to defend BDSP, I am just stating a fact
Had BDSP been developed by Game Freak it would be less disappointing.
but at the same time...would they really have been able to handle that extra workload since Game Freak was working on Legends and on Gen 9 so their resources where already stretched
@@bulborb8756 Legends just wouldn’t have existed.
@@UltraBall23 exactly
Story in Arceus was great, was it basically Mystery Dungeon...yeah but it's a good story. But kinda crazy that there was no post story where we try to send the protagonist back to their time.
How tf are we at the end of gen 8 already
I honestly loved Sword and Shield. They are my favourite 3D Pokémon games and they had me hooked for a really long time after I beat the game with Raid events and mystery gift distributions.
