Make Type in a Circle to Create a Round Logo in Illustrator

- Making type in a circle is easy, but aligning it just right can sometimes be a pain. This is a longer tutorial for me because there are a few things to go over that just can't be covered in one minute. I will show you in this tutorial not only how to create type in a circle, but how to use your alignment tools in Illustrator to make sure your logo is perfectly centered. Also we will spice it up a little bit to make it stand out as a bold star logo.
At the end of the video there is another little tip to help you if your strokes are not scaling down properly. If this happens to you, on your top menu bar just visit Illustrator - Preferences - General, and make sure to check the box that says "Scale Strokes and Effects." Now your strokes will scale up and down proportionally with the rest of your items.

I had to do some Illustrator work because the person who normally does it was out sick. I spent a good deal of time viewing other tutorials before I found yours. You have a great voice and you instruct a beginner like me without making them feel like an idiot. You have not forgotten what it was like to be a beginner and that is what makes you a great teacher!
Although a pro could have done it much faster, I did do a great job in the allotted time and my boss is pleased. Thanks!

+John D Wow! You're welcome!! :-)
Very Good video. Thanks.
Thank you!
Basically i need to create the circle logo for 100s of designs, The design itself only has writing top and bottom like that, and a logo in the middle.
Can i just use the same template i make and just edit it by swapping out the words and logo for new 1s or do i have to create the whole design each time ? Surely not ?
Thanks a bunch!
You're welcome! Thanks for the comment.
Thank you so much!
You're welcome! :-)

+Joe Ferris I'm so glad! Many is the time I've thought of throwing my own computer out the window, which is why I made this tutorial channel to save others the expense. Good luck with your type in a circle - maybe you will make your own tutorial!

+One Minute Digital I would like to see the tutorial address grouping it together and is it a vector ? and saving it
+Kain Caudill Select > All, then Object > Group. And yes this entire thing is vector unless you have imported a raster image. Re: saving, I recommend saving as a .pdf or .ai, but depends on what you're saving it for. :-)
This is exactly what i was looking for, YEAAAA!
+Wung Ahum Great!! :-D

Also if you don't mind me asking, how do you convert an image into a vector without those funny looking effect that you'll get from image trace. I saw lots of of em on a free-vector-download sites.
shuq aries
Great question - The trick with vectorizing photos is to start out with a very clean image in Photoshop. Use Photoshop's Curves tool (Image > Adjustments > Curves) to make a more clear black and white image. That way when you bring it into Illustrator the image trace tool can find the lines more easily. Also play with the Image Trace settings in Illustrator to get the effect that you want - usually Silhouette works well. Then it's just manual cleanup using Illustrator's Eraser tool to smooth the jagged lines. It can be time-consuming but the overall effect is great.
One Minute Digital thank you sooo much :D
I'll try em now , soo much to learn..I'm great with AE but a total noob when it comes to Illustrator or Photoshop.

It was really helpful ,
is there any to way to a whole object by writing size preferences .
Hi! Not sure what you mean. You can record and save actions with certain size preferences, is that what you mean?
link to download the program !
How do you get the little prompt window to come up when you make a new object such as an ellipse circle, so that it's easy to determine the dimensions? Thank you
+Brenna Davis With the ellipse tool selected, just click (don't drag) anywhere on the artboard and the little box will pop up. Hope that helps!
GOOD STUFF
+Tim Beachy Thanks!
Wah, bagus juga nih, iya deh saya ngerti, ntar coba dipraktekin di rumah.
(Oh, that's great, okay I see, I'm trying to practice it in my home next)

+Iwan Retro Thanks! :)
I am in CC 2014 and the toolbar looks totally different than yours, and I can't find "align to selection." Can you help? Thanks for these videos, it's a great service!
+Robyn Landis Go up to your main menu to Window > Align. That will bring up your Alignment box where you can choose where to align from and all the distribution tools will be there. Hope that helps - thanks for the comment!
hello can you tell me how to put right size of circle after designing them.. i have put vectors and name.. i want to make aleast 15 sticker but how to put the right size each. i have 4oz tins and wanted to put stickers on them. i dont know the size exactly but once i do i will make it right
Hi Vanessa. Select your entire logo circle and go to your Transform panel (should be top right). Change the W: and H: to whatever size you want, keeping the little link icon checked so it stays uniform and a perfect circle. (Make sure there are no type boxes or art sticking out of your circle boundary before you do this or Illustrator will think the type box is the edge of the logo.) I hope that is helpful!
life saver
Glad it helped, thank you! :)
Very nice and detailed tutorial. it was very user-friendly in terms of clarity. Just one question, although checking scaling down stroke option helped in controlling strokes. But the text is not scaling down, instead, it cuts down when I scale down the logo. Please guide and help on text scaling too. Thank you.
Gurjeet Singh Hi! Not sure what you mean by the text cuts down. What happens when you scale down?
Hi, I meant when I scale down, the text gets suppressed due to which it becomes invisible. Anyway, the problem has been solved by selecting Transform Pattern Tiles which is above the Scale Strokes & Effects option. Thank you very much for this video and your reply.
I see. When you are finished with the design you will need to outline the fonts (Type>Create Outlines) so that they will scale down with the rest of the artwork. Just make sure you also save an editable copy. :)
Sure, I will do that. Thank you for informing me.
