- There are lots of brushes you can buy online and load into your Brushes Palette, but it's easy to make your own. In this tutorial we will make a bicycle chain graphic and turn it into a brush to be used as a stroke. This is not difficult but there are more steps and key commands in this one. I hope it will help make you familiar with the Blend Tool, The Pathfinder, and a great little pencil called the Smooth Tool. Enjoy creating your custom bicycle chain.
I never thought I would need a bike chain brush... but thank you for making this!! I got the request to make numbers as a bike chain... and this is just perfect!
Fantastic tutorial! Thank you so much. Have tried a rope pattern and that took hours, plenty redos, this video first time and done... 😁😁 You explain very well and to the point.
Just followed along, and then again to make a chainsaw brush. The fundamentals covered in this tutorial are great! Thank you for being so detailed!
If anyone has an issue dragging the artwork into the brushes panel cause they get an error - remove or deselect the guides that's all.
Hey guys,
I watched this video and everything works perfectly until I want to drag the chain shape into the brush panel. When I want to drag it in to make it a brush pattern, this message shows: "the selected illustration contains an element that can't be used to make a brush pattern".
What am I doing wrong here? Happy to hear your help.
you may have dragged the guides too; leave those out
Thank u so much. Worked at first try! 🖤
For the first time I watch this video. Its really an awesome video. It will help me to learn how to create a bike chain. Giving Thank will be smaller. I am thrilled with the video. From now I will go with your video. Have a nice day!
Amazing! Easy to follow and very clear instructions. Only thing is I got an error while adding it to the brushes panel but getting rid of the ruler guides fixed that. Can you tell me how to use this brush on text please? Also, if I open a new canvas, I don't see the brush I just created. Do I have to save it somewhere in particular?
extremely well made video, really helpful!
great instruction. thanks
You saved my life. Thanks for sharing your skills! Cheers
+Matias Jimenez My pleasure, thanks!

WOW! Just WOW saved me hours!

Thank you very much, this was really helpful!
Very cool! Thank you!
Thanks! :)
Thank you so much!
Amazing tutorial!!! I was actually drawing a realistic bike and the chain was just crap. Now it looks like the real thing! Many thanks!!
Hello, very good tutorial, just one question: what is the purpose of the rectangle? I can't figure it out. Thank you.
Really usefull...
Thanks!
Really helpful tutorial! Thank you so much for posting!
Excellent teaching! Keep up the good work.
A great tutorial. Thank you!
Using Illustrator 27.5 for Windows. All went well until trying to group the circles for the pivots on the chain. Can't get the grouping to work so I can drag a second one within the figure 8 pattern. Help!!! 5:45 - 6:10
Cool, I learned some neat features for this video. Thanks
Great!
where you select the ruler that creates a circle on the path when your taking a section, it doesn't do that in CS6 or I missed a step
just deselect the guidelines in ur final selection before making a pattern brush
Thank you - I was having an error where it said " This brush contains elements we cannot use" glad I read the comments
when i drag my selection over to the brushes, it takes the entire drawing, not just the stuff that's within the box that has been sent to the back.....
This is GREAT! Can the same process be used to create a brush composed of one word?
I was able to complete the entire chain but when I try to move it over into the brush palette, it tells me "there is an element that cannot be used in a pattern brush." How do I correct this?
Me too. I don't know what to do.
YRo Agrinsoni you're welcome! :)
I had been trying to do something like this for the past 6 hrs! You saved my night with this! LOL
YRo Agrinsoni excellent!
"the selected artwork contains an element that cannot be used in a pattern brush" - i need help ASAP !!!
What do you have selected? I don't think you can make a pattern out of an imported image or a gradient.
One Minute Digital i had no gradient or picture.... i medled around for like an hour.... not sure what i did but i managed to make it work...
Hmm Well I'm glad it worked! :-)
For those having the same issue, I just deleted the guides and expanded everything to curves, then it worked.
How did you do that?
why is that rectangle at 9.14 required
It is necessary because we need to cut out the middle section in order to create the swatch for the pattern brush. If you just want to create the image and not make a swatch then it is not necessary.
why i can't change the colour??
Make sure you're changing the Stroke (outline) color, not the Fill (inside).
alright .. just find out how to change colour . thank you for your quick reply
Do you sell this brush somewhere?
Mikael Andersson thanks for the comment! I don't but I'm sure there are lots of pre-made brushes out there. This tutorial is to try to get people familiar with Illustrator and make things from scratch.
Ok. I just have to do the work then :D Its actually almost impossible to find any brush like this. :)
nice but bit slower talking and showing might be better for the viewers...
