This is by far one of the best and most useful tutorials I have ever seen. Thank you so much! I am now subscribed and look forward to the quick tips, but these longer tutorials for standard items FROM START TO FINISH is truly the best!!!!
Just found your tutorial, and as a newcomer to AI, but long time user of PS, I found your tips for print settings most valuable, especially the "bleed" explanation. The penny finally dropped - I've been "bleeding" the wrong way! Doh! Both myself and my local print shop will be forever grateful to you!
+Gary Frost Doh! LOL I'm so glad the tutorial helped you. AI makes it very easy to get get things print-ready, and you can do pretty much the same thing in PS. The only reason why I prefer AI is that the type is crystal clear when printed. Thanks so much for the comment - I really appreciate it.
thanks to reply me on my comments , in future i would like to see one more tutorial on complete process on graphics for web site ,start to end process ,like how to start n how to use that graphics in web......
+Namam Morya That would be a very long tutorial! I am thinking about doing some Wordpress tutorials so graphics for web would fall under that category.
Thank YOU!!! What a wonderful video....you were clear, concise and so easy to follow! I learned lots from you in this video...I'm definitely subscribing and going to check out your other ones!!
Excellent job - I've been in the printing industry for 25 years, best video. I'd love to see a tutorial on Fonts - envelope / reshaping - you explain very well thank you.
I would first call the screen printer to see how they prefer to receive the artwork. FPScreenPrinting has a terrific simple tutorial for color separation of vector artwork for Tshirt printing: ruclips.net/video/O16wP012sC8/видео.html check it out!
Been working in Pre-Press as a plate maker at a Plastic cards company, so i'm always seeing the PDF's after they've been set up for print. Interesting to see how its done before it gets to me!
Thanks Matthew! I've worked in pre-press myself so I know what you mean. The only thing I left out in this tutorial is crop marks, because I found them hard to work with when setting up cards on a gang sheet. Do you agree or do you prefer them to be included with the print-ready file?
When i get the file its set up in a sheet of 24 cards 8x3. With all the marks needed for printing, collating, sig paneling and punching. Think we do the sheets in indesign anyway so i didnt mind watching this vid and not seeing them :P
Best tutorial! I Learn a lot. I was working on our card tonight and it after selecting all the art board, it won't let me select the "create outline". Is there any way I can fix that? Or I should just print my card?I know it's needed for graphics. Thanks!
I saved the image as TIFF, but I want it transparent to go on a solid background. The image has white background. Do I have to remove background. Can you do a tutorial on this please? Why is TIFF better? Awesome channel.
+Michael Sharp (TechniSmart) Save as .eps or .pdf. TIFF files are good for printing but Save as TIFF only from Photoshop. Are you trying to import an Illustrator file into Photoshop?
Thanks for the tutorial! Very helpful. One question, it appears you didn't you set up your bleed correctly at the beginning when you created the file dimensions. You made the size (W) 3.625 by (H) 2.125 If it needs 0.125 bleed, it should be on all edges right? So your total file dimensions should have been; (W) 3.5 + 0.125 (for left bleed) + 0.125 (for right bleed) = 3.75 and (H) 2 + 0.125 (for top bleed) + 0.125 (for bottom bleed) = 2.25 or did I miss something?
raw power Good question, let me clarify - actually it's 0.125" bleed all the way around, which will give you .0625 on each side. Most printers accept this amount of bleed, though you may want to ask if they prefer to have more. Thanks for watching!
Hi Great Tute, to the point anyone can design personal business card, but I am, little bit confuse about the bleed line is it 3mm with 2mm margin. Also Do you have any Tute on flyer. Thanks
I do have a flyer tutorial it is here: ruclips.net/video/3elz3fG4Acs/видео.html Re the bleed, the tutorial is done in inches but that translates to setting up your artboard at 92.08 mm x 53.98 mm and then making your inside box 88.9 mm x 50.8 mm.
Thanks for the tutorial, but I do have a question - will print companies end up printing this the wrong size (since it's larger than 3.5" x 2") with no trim marks?
+Molly Yang Most printers require bleed and they realize why it is there. That being said it's always good to make sure, and let them know that you are providing a file "with bleed" and that you expect it to be trimmed. :-) Sorry for the late reply, youtube is not alerting me to new comments for some reason!
HI great information. I however can not get the embed clickable on my AI. It is there but not one of the items I can click on and make the image embed as you show in your lesson. HELP!!
+Doug Kendall Make sure you are clicked on the right artboard that has the image you want to embed. If you are clicked on the back (artboard 2), it won't let you embed an image on the front (artboard 1). Hope that helps!
Yes, you just tell your printer which is the front side and which is the back! Some printers are fine with receiving a 2 page pdf with front and back, some want you to upload separate files.
+Stéphane Lardy Technically yes, it's good to set up the bleed in the New Document window first. The only reason I did it the other way is that many printers will take your card file and put many up on a sheet - sometimes with other cards - and the crop marks can get in their way. Ask your printer before hand if they want crop marks or just bleed. If you set up your bleed first, you can save the file without the crop marks showing if you want. Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for watching! Yes, you can add trim marks, but all printers know if it's a standard business card with bleed, it gets cut down to 3.5 x 2. I only don't add them here because when printers set up your card for press they often have to put several up on one sheet and they may have to go in and remove your trim marks if they don't have good imposition software. It's always good to talk with your printer or send them a spec sheet before they run the job.
Hello: i got this message and i don't know what it means or how to fix this to get the background with squares: could not complete your request because the smart object is not directly detectable thanks for your help
at 2.01 minutes when you have the 2 art boards - why don't you have red border like I have? sorry I'm new to business cards and have a client wanting me to design one for her
Hi Jodie! It's because when you set up your document you chose bleed in the new document window. This tutorial is for setting up the business card without adding the bleed at the beginning, just making the card size a little bigger. I do it that way because for beginners sometimes the bleed is confusing. You can remove the red bleed line by going to File > Document Setup - just make sure your document size has the added bleed. (3.625 x 2.125") If you keep working with the bleed line, make sure your DOCUMENT size is 3.5 x 2" and your BLEED amount is set for all 4 sides at minimum 1.25". Hope that helps!
but that doesn't make sense because in your tutorial when you have the 'new' document box open you have the bleed set to 0.125 in all 4 boxes when you click OK at 1.58 ....
This tutorial is done without crop marks. To set them up go to File > Document Setup and change your bleed settings. For a business card with crop marks your file size should be 3.5 x 2" with .125" bleed. This tutorial shows you how to make your card with bleed but not crop marks.
This doesn't address how to print the business cards after it is made into a pdf file. Basically what options to choose when actually printing the cards on business card stock paper. How do you tell the printer to print your business card in tiles perfectly on the card paper? etc. So I would say she kind of fail in providing that info. Hopefully she or someone explains this last method.
+Jabriel Woodall This video is only for how to prepare your files to send to a printer, not to print them out. To print them yourself you would need to buy pre-perforated business card stock such as Avery makes at your local office supply place and follow the instructions according to their template.
Hi Jessie! The bleed is the extra art/graphics that hangs outside of the cutting area. It "bleeds" past the cutting edge to avoid showing the white paper underneath the artwork if it shifts a little bit when being cut. It's only necessary if you're making a file for printing, and not necessary at all if your card has a white background.
This is by far one of the best and most useful tutorials I have ever seen. Thank you so much! I am now subscribed and look forward to the quick tips, but these longer tutorials for standard items FROM START TO FINISH is truly the best!!!!

How are you printing your shirts? Do you have a home screen kit, digital, or are you wanting to send them to a shirt printer?

Hi by following these steps will it lead to the business card being printed front and back, all in one piece?
Yes, you just tell your printer which is the front side and which is the back! Some printers are fine with receiving a 2 page pdf with front and back, some want you to upload separate files.
ok thanks a lot!
why didn't set the bleeding directly when you opened your new document? Is the best way to do it the way you did it about the bleeding?
+Stéphane Lardy Technically yes, it's good to set up the bleed in the New Document window first. The only reason I did it the other way is that many printers will take your card file and put many up on a sheet - sometimes with other cards - and the crop marks can get in their way. Ella Marie Hi Ella. Not sure what you mean - what are you trying to do when you get that message?

where are the crop marks though? I did all the settings correctly.
This tutorial is done without crop marks. To set them up go to File > Document Setup and change your bleed settings. For a business card with crop marks your file size should be 3.5 x 2" with .125" bleed. This tutorial shows you how to make your card with bleed but not crop marks.
Looks great but I am having a tough time hearing you...and I have my laptop volume high.... :(

why didn't you show to create the art boards ?
Hi, I show how to create artboards at 1:15 - Go to File > New > and choose the number of artboards and the size.
What's the "bleed" means?
Im new at AI.'
Hi Jessie! The bleed is the extra art/graphics that hangs outside of the cutting area.
