Thanks for the video. However, if like me you just need to remove the coloured caps, to replace it or repair it for example, then it is much easier than the video shows. 1. Turn the mirror inward and downwards as much as it will go. 2. Don't use your fingers to pry the mirror out, you are much more likely to bend and crack the mirror if you do this. Instead use a plastic or wooden strip to get behind the mirror and just carefully push on the middle of the back of the mirror until it pops out. I used a wooden school ruler but a screwdriver wrapped in a cloth would also work. 3. Don't disconnect any wires. 4. Don't unscrew anything. 5. Using a flat head screwdriver press down the two clips holding the cover in place (these will be the same colour as your mirror cap - they are white in this video and he unclips them at 2:50 but really this can be done without all the other undoing/unscrewing bits). 6. As you are pressing the clips down just gently pull the cap and it will come off without the need for much force.
Be sure to pull from the side of the glass closest to the car or straight on the top in the middle because it cracks if you yank it from the other side like in the video
Don’t need to take all 5 screws out. Just the two on the black plastic behind the glass. Then pop the two tabs for the caps. Same goes for replacing the signals
Is there anything different I need to know if I just need to replace the black plastic trim? The dealership was going to charge me $800, because it was “impossible” to order the black mirror trim piece alone. It will arrive in 2 weeks for $48.
Yeah you can. The factory one is bonded to the bottom cover though so you'd need to replace both at once or remove the broken indicator from the lower cover completely before fitting the new one.
I can't seem to get the mirror glass off on my 2015 jetta and am afraid to break it. I can get my finger tips behind it but it does not want to budge. I just need to replace the plastic trim piece. Any suggestions?
Dieter Preiser i got the mirror off. You don’t need to pull at all. Just get your fingers behind there and it pops right off. Just have to get a t10 and I can replace my trim piece as well. Good luck
@@recklessgiant Thanks. I tried again this morning with a little more force and it popped right off. I have a 2015 Jetta which does not match up with the mirror shown in this video. The trim piece uses only tabs to hold it in place, no screws. Although to remove the light or motor, a T10 is required. When removing the trim piece, it is very easy to break the tabs. So for my repair, all I had to do is CA glue the tip of the indicator lense which was damaged in an incident, and replace the trim piece. Its as good as new now.

I broke the glass on my mirror doing this after watching the video.
You have to be very careful with the mirror glass.
Can I change the mirror indicator light trim the clear bit mine broke
Yeah you can. The factory one is bonded to the bottom cover though so you'd need to replace both at once or remove the broken indicator from the lower cover completely before fitting the new one.
Did you manage to replace only the clear bit without buying a whole lower cover?

@@recklessgiant No, my mirror is still operational so I have not messed with it. But I really would like to change the trim piece. I'll try again.
