  • With Dragon Ball Super and its anime and manga, there are quite a lot of differences. However, the same can be said for the Dragon Ball Z manga when in comparison to the classic anime series. The two weren't the same! The anime changed a lot of things such as making Frieza even MORE evil, Buutenks was stronger than Buuhan, Trunks is less flashy when going Super Saiyan against Mecha Freeza and much more besides. Join us as we compare the DBZ anime to the manga. #DBZ #DragonBallZ #DragonBall #DragonBallSuper

When it comes to adaptations from one medium to another, you can't expect things to translate wholesale with no changes whatsoever. There could be things the original creator wanted to modify after the fact, things might work not so well animated than still...or you could be like the recent live-action Cowboy Bebop and completely strip every little nuance going and turn it into a thing that's cool...and nothing else. Where's the subtext?! But we're talking about Dragon Ball here, folks...and we're referring to the shoe, not the cat.
If you're familiar with both the Super manga and the anime, there are very big differences since they were made simultaneously for a long time. You could argue, with how different the Super Anime was from the manga, you can basically view the two as separate stories; completely different from another. Seriously. Entire sagas have vast differences which do not translate at all into the alternate media. What happened was that Toriyama had a ton of points and narrative landmarks, gave them to Toyotaro and the animation team...and they both could do what they liked to get to the same point. It often feels very, VERY different, due to that unorthodox schedule in which the two were created.
With the Z portion of the Story, since the manga was less readily available back then, we feel that the general audience awareness has a much bigger problem with distinguishing the two, thinking that they are very much alike...but were they really? Filler is one thing, but sometimes your memory can play tricks on you... and some iconic moments, that you thought were part of the manga...weren't. Instead, they were added to the story by the anime team to make up time for a particular episode or story arc. Sometimes, admittedly, we get into that trap and have to double- or even triple- check ourselves! We get it wrong sometimes and misremember...but we're human! So today we decided to go to Z (because the original is its own Can of Worms) and show you some of our favourite examples of things not being what they seemed. That were not from the manga! Some far less obvious than others, so... without further ado, let's do it!

Tbh the anime has little 16/Gohan interactions. I would have preferred that interaction and waking SSJ2 call to happen with Trunks, who, in the anime, is seen feeding squirrels and enjoying nature on a few occasions. And Trunks had more reason to interact with 16 (both of them being at Capsule Corp..)

I much prefer the manga for its pacing, and for things like the introduction of nappa and vegeta. I like the idea that we don’t know anything about them before they arrive on earth. The planet Arlia stuff is neat but makes them less intimidating by giving us some sense of their power. What you don’t know is frequently scarier.
but I appreciate plenty of things that the anime came up with too! Toriyama was involved in a lot of the filler, so that’s why a lot of it feels very natural. at least some of the earlier moments.

I don't think DB/Z would have been as popular without the anime adaptation. It enriched the characters so much and used it's key moments as the framework to a natural storytelling process by TV scriptwriting professionals.
Filler didn't always hit the mark in terms of later continuity but you cannot deny that it was crafted by utter professionals in their industry.
There was so much heart and a natural group symbiotic relationship between a vast array of creators, so that even if spurred on by monetary interests, it grew into something quite larger and more significant than Akira Toriyama ever intended.
That even occurs in the Manga itself, with many ideas being spurred on by his editors.

They'd just be making themselves hypocrites otherwise (not that most of them even care, really). Can't use it as evidence if you're just gonna say it's non-canon.

But then making that conscious choice that he must train so that he can protect the people he loves. And his training with Piccolo, whenever he got knocked down he would always get up and come back for more. It speaks volumes about Gohan's character and why he fights. I guess it's not really needed as this same attitude is reinforced so many times throughout the series - Except that weird pacifist blip in the Cell games where Gohan becomes a whole different person and acts out of character. I really wish more time was spent on the training parts. They usually do a timeskip over them but they can be some of the most fun parts.

Somethings and scenarios to show different sides of the characters and go deeper into their personalities and such are important and that's why the anime should be considered when talking about dragon ball
Other writers give the ability to show the deeper feelings and relationships of characters and there mortality and weaknesses and other important things in the world of dragon ball
Which is why it's good The Z anime
    Gt
    And super arnt exclusively toriya
And why it's good for the Z manga to be exclusively toriyama it allows other writers to use them differently and show other side of the characters we would not have seen or given them reason to show if written by one man
The Z anime is a different continuity to the manga due to the different writers and I wish people would atleast consider the ideas and physics of the non manga non toriyama aspects and stories of dragon ball
I love the Z anime and it's fillers and I wish people would use them more when conversating of the physics and other aspects of the dragon ball world
Too often people ignore gt or the Z anime because it wasn't in the manga and I hate that
Those extra scenes and scenarios give the characters more depth then they could have expirienced on a few drawn pages
The Z anime is filler has been ignored so many times because it wasn't in the manga
But dragon ball is a product and different writers help and give ideas and other such things
Akira by his lonesome cannot go more in depth with certain characters that need more of it
All of dragon ball media is important and should be considered when making what if stories or other such things
    Og anime
    Z anime
    Gt
    Super anime
And all the original mangas should all be looked at and used as official when possible to make a deeper and greater story
That's what I love about some of MasakoX is what it's he will always usually add something from different medias to add too the story
    Sometimes the movies
    Sometimes gt
    Sometimes anime filler
Instead of ignoring them for not being in the manga see them as official dragon ball media like what they are
Officially licensed media from Toei and use them to our advantage to make better stories rather than just following the manga alone
Remember the Super anime isn't only written by Akira and neither was GT the newer writers are allowed to explore he characters in ways Akira can't by himself
I may be wrong about this but
Gt is ending may not have been as touching as it was to the fans if Akira wrote it
Different writers can explore the deeper feelings of the characters in ways the original creator can't
All I'm saying is don't always brush any official dragon ball media made by the people who own dragon ball as non canon or not important because it's not in the manga
Use what you love about these shows and make something great

Also in the Provisional Hero License Exam Arc, we never see how certain students of Class A-1 past the first part. Because the Saiyans are coming regardless of what he does, so he should prepare for them.
Also the filler on the way to Namek where they encounter a run down, reflective ship full of kids that were orphaned by Freeza's organization. A neat little bit of world building, always hoped those kids were doing well in the Post-Freeza universe and were able to find a place to settle down outside of his reach before he was revived.

As for the beginning of Z, “Gohan chasing the butterfly” I honestly didn’t remember lol.

The part about Gohan in the woods doesn't sound familiar except from the "kakarot" game. I thought that was fluff added into the game... I've NEVER seen any such scene in anime though

Small nods like this are why you're our favorite Dragonball Enthusiast. Expert for a more accurate term. You've truly expanded my mind on the series' universe with your what ifs. The what if Raditz, Frieza and Turles turned good being my particular favorites.

If I could change the anime, I would remove all the filler except for the diver episode, vegeta going super saiyan, gohan going super saiyan, goten going super saiyan, pikkon and otherworld filler. And maybe keep the android 16, 17 and 18 van filler.

I love the anime because it gives us more than the manga does. Not saying the manga is bad flipping through some if the manga I have found that some if my favorite moments of Z just aren't in there. The battle on Arlea, the fleshed out battle royal between the Nameks and Freiza's men, Vegeta's searching for Goku and his first Super Sayian transformation, Trunks vs Cell. I know there is a ton of padding in the anime but not all the padding is bad.

You can tell that Takao Koyama was really passionate about these characters from giving us great characters build up moments in the anime version, something you don't get anymore with the current production team, they just stick to the script.

Manga wasn't even a thing here when DBZ first came out in the US. And when we had the Other Dub with the good Nappa voice actor and the memerific Vegeta voice actor. So I only ever experienced DBZ via watching it as it came out on TV. I never really got into manga so.

I watched the anime with my dad once and have been reading the manga ever since (I don’t dislike the anime or anything, it’s just not very accessible). My dad grew up with the anime, so we often get into arguments over how things happened in the story.

You know, it would’ve been amazing if Gohan actually failed to become a super Saiyan. The audience thinking he would succeed would’ve been blown away by that and then during the Cell fight he still cracks up the SSJ2 transformation

Super Buu (Piccolo Absorbed) has Piccolo's purple gi in the manga, while in the anime he just wears Piccolo's cape

So that's why Super Buu has Piccolo's gi when he's absorbed in Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3 and Infinite World. I've wondered for a while why it was done that way in those games (even if it looks better.)

I usually only care about what happens in the manga because it's the canon , and I take the filler in the anime as something that I shouldn't think or care about, but with dragon ball it's the opposite, the anime really made a lot of scenes of the characters interactions with each other and it made us love them and understand them more while the manga feels sooo fast and doesn't give us time between arc

I don't remember Gohan getting lost in the woods at all. Now I know that was not in DBZA, and that is how I last rewatched the series, but I've seen DBZ regular 3 times, 4 counting the first half, and I still don't remember there being any scene before Raditz and the farmer, and then Gohan being shown at Kame house. Is this scene in Kai? Because Kai is the only one I never watched.
But I never did read the manga so this was interesting. The reason I avoided Kai was because removing filler was the exact opposite of what I wanted. Like in Naruto too, the filler was often my favourite. Moments that dont have to be purely tense fighting, but can just be funny or more relaxed. The tone of DBZ is way too serious to it's detriment. A version of DBZ the anime, that excludes Goku and Piccolo getting their driver's licenses, is not worth watching. I want MORE like that. I want a DBZ anti-kai!... Oh wait, that's DBZ Abridged. Ironically better at correcting the pacing, whilst adding in humor and character building moments. Genuinely, Abridged is exactly what I've always wanted. And Kai is everything I didn't want. I don't want accuracy, i want fun.
This is why I really enjoy how common it is for my favourite western shows to have a comic series that I can pick up after the animated series ends, and keep enjoying it. Even if they might not be canon.

My first exposure to the Dragonball story was...my cousin exposing me to Dragonball GT Final Bout so I bought the Dragonball Z Budokai games. I loved this. Read through all of the story synopsis (no access to TV and very limited internet access) before reading pirated scans and eventually watching Dragonball Kai and buying the Manga after DBZA got me back into the series.

14:05 Confused. "Good Buu is carried away by Vegeta by Hercule instead."
Vegeta is carrying Good Buu and Hercule is carrying Vegeta? That's an interesting image xD.
Edit: I look up the manga, I see Hercule carrying Vegeta.

I was just complaining about them cutting Gregory from Kakarot, and hearing that he wasn't in the manga was just weird. If they were going to cut one of my favorite characters, they could at least give Kid Buu back his cool hand design! Oh geez, I jokingly referred to them as "Flipper hands" and now I can't stop seeing him as a powerpuff girl.
And I guess that's why the road trip wasn't in Kakarot either. I was really upset with that since I always considered it one of the best parts of the entire series. It's weird, Kakarot pitched itself as this "Goku life simulator" yet it felt very much more like Gohan's game, and it seems it was also trying to be more manga accurate... except when it wasn't? I just finished Kakarot incidentally, so that's why I'm using it as such a point of reference, I'd really like to know what was going on behind the scenes there.

    • @Supahdenning

Yeah, I really think Kakarot should have rolled with the filler as well. Could even use the original filler from Attack of the Saiyans. Strictly following the manga storyline doesn't suit itself to an RPG well, and it's clearly going for a "play the show!" vibe anyway, and the filler with all of Toei's quirks really is a substantial part of the anime.

If I'm not mistaken the manga doesn't show Gotenks's fight against fat Buu, right? He just takes off and comes back the next panel saying he got beat
I think Goku also doesn't show SSJ3 to Goten and Trunks in the manga, the anime probably just added that to foreshadow Gotenks going SSJ3 as well

    • @j04370859
      @j04370859 2 года назад

Yep, the Gotenks vs Fat Buu fight, wasn't in the manga. People felt that Gotenks going SSJ3, made no sense, but it's even worse, knowing that they never observed Goku doing it, in the manga, the anime somewhat, made sense of it.
