Well, you see, this backstory was created before they decided that Potara fusion isn't permanent for mortals for the sake of plot.
They literally had no reason to do this. They could've had Vegeta learn the Fusion Dance and used Gogeta instead.

Not many characters can take advantage of ultimate form. Most of them train enough up already have their full potential on top. But now that I think about it, Ultimate Broly would be pretty messed up.

This is one of the most unexplained mysteries of Dragon Ball, this was made to imply that the Kaioshins don't age and the only reason why he looks old was because he fused with a witch, but later in DBS Gowasu appeared confirming that Kaioshins do age.

If my memory serves me correct elder Kai specifically said the Batora fusion is permanent. That’s why there was no way he could and do this spell or a magic if you well. I definitely would’ve got the dragon balls and reversed to spell magic in order to see old Kai revert into Young Kai separating the witch from him.. but I’m not gonna lie elder Kai is hilarious, he is a character I absolutely love he’s like what would happen if Master Roshi became a wiser elder Sage but was a divine being lol.

In Dragon Ball Super, Supreme Kai Shin and Kibito were able to separate their fusion by using the Namekian Dragon Balls. So they could do the same thing with Old Kai, but Old Kai seems to be okay with his fusion as he has more magical powers because of it. That and the pervert personality probably won't let him defuse.
Didn't one of the Vegeta/Goku fusion forms using the Potara earrings eventually undo itself because the earrings can only handle so much power or something? So, if that's the case then the witch and Kai here are pretty weak for the fusion to last this long.
@@sugarbeef that’s technically not true. That is a theory they came up with in verse as an answer to why they unfused. But there’s something to the story that everyone missed.
Goku and Vegeta unfused because they were inside of Super Buu’s body. Majin Buu is Magical/ Mystical eternal Divine Being. Made up of evil chi/ “ki.” The Potara earrings are made up of “Kaioshin ki” energy. That represents good “ki”. Majin Buu’s ki is evil. Majin Ki + Kaioshin ki = disconnect. The Majin magic/energy is more potent and more powerful. Thus, causing what was supposed to be a permanent fusion, to deactivate because the Kai energy a.k.a. the Potarra earrings are inside the body of Super Buu. This cancels out their magical/mystical energy-based ability.
Kid Buu is The Original and most powerful form of Majin Buu. The Supreme Kai, Shin explained Kid Buu’s backstory. Originally there was Kid Buu. An unstoppable force of nature. He killed The Female Supreme Kai. He then moved onto the Strongest, In this battle he absorbed this Kaioshin. The process of absorbing a Kai for the very first time caused him to become more violent in nature, but each and every absorption weakened his power level from its original 100% state. This is what we refer to as Buff Buu. Who was far more powerful than Super Buu.
Buff Buu vs The Daikaioshin (Fat One). Buff Buu absorbed The Daikaioshin. This changed Buff Buu once again. It is critical to point out in this changing process, Buff Buu transformed into Fat Buu. Also in this transitional process he became exponentially weakened even more. This form of Majin Buu gained A conscience. This also in advertently saved the universe. Because he now had an influence of good within the evil. Every time boo absorbed a Kaioshin it weakened his power level significantly.
Notice there is a difference between when Super Buu Absorbed a Saiyan or a Namekian. Specifically absorbing a Saiyan and or a Namekian made Super Buu Stronger. Versus Kid Buu absorbing any Kaioshin made him weaker. Kai Energy + Majin Energy does not mix. This will cause an unnatural process to happen between the Majin Ki and The Kaioshin Ki. Thus causing Evil “ki” (Majin Magic/ Buu) good “ki” (Kaioshin themselves or anything from them) to have adverse affects/ effects on each other.
i just watched the dbs episode again with vegito today so don’t forget it’s not just a fusion between kai’s that are permanent the dub at least specifically says a fusion INVOLVING a kai is permanent. even if new old kai didn’t like it if the dub is exact there’s nothing he could do to unfuse

The fact they've stayed like that for so long makes one wonder if it's a symbiotic relationship at this point, if they're in a relationship in another way, or if there's a deeper reason for the refusal to de-fuse given the old witch likely by now has knowledge known by kai.
Also technically we have seen defusion with kais in dbz but that is only due to both parties in the scenario being kaioshin.

I imagine that the Witch, clearly sorely lacking in social grace, is the main reason why Old Kai is so openly pervy.
Likewise, this fusion seems to help support the notion that Ki, Divine Power, and Magic are all separate things, as he gained many unusual and powerful magical abilities as a result of this fusion. In a certain sense that make Piccolo and Namekians in general pretty impressive, considering they can use Ki and Magic, and though they don’t have divine ki, they can clearly wield some level of divine power considering Kami existed.
He got more power a Chaplin stache and got a personality out of it, nothing but a net win

My guess is that when the old Kai fused there was no way to unfuse them. He did say it happened many thousands of years ago, so maybe items like the dragon balls didn't exist yet. I think that by the time the dragon balls came into existence, he had gotten used to his form, and chose to stay that way since it did have some actual benefits. Or maybe the old witch part really enjoyed being fused with a god of creation, and it overpowered the Kai part, so he decided to stay fused.
Back before they retconned the Potara fusion from being permanent barring unusual circumstances like entering a place where normal laws of physics don't apply to only permanent if at least one fusee was a Kaioshin

My best guess is that, following vegito/gogeta logic, the old Kai is a separate being with similar traits to the Kai and the witch but not simply the two mushed together. Basically the “I am neither goku nor vegeta, I am the one who will destroy you” except trade out the sayains with the Kai and witch and “destroy” with “train”

Having found out the fusion can end for gods as well as supreme kai and kibito separated eventually. Old kai should be able to do the same but never tried to.

Okay, the reason why Elder Kai remains fused with the Old Witch, is a Supreme Kai which means the Fusion is permanent under most circumstances with the only known ways to unfuse being a wish to an eternal dragon (currently only Porunga & Super Shenron are confirmed capable of granting such a wish) or having someone use Forced Spirit Fission which is a technique that is difficult to master! Elder Kai isn't a fan of using Dragon Balls (in DBS it has nothing to do with Shadow Dragons as that concept was retconned in by Toei, when in Toriyama's original script it was simply cause he felt they upset the natural order & that Earth had set too!
There are some things that I don’t understand about the potaras. Why did the Kais make it to where the fusion is permanent if a supreme Kai is involved? Why not make it to where they could defuse whenever they wanted to or just make it a 1 hour time limit like it is with mortals? Why are mortals given a 1 hour time limit?

To be fair, the witches in the DB verse would have to be low level divine beings at minimal. I say this because Roshi's Sister Baba is able to go in-between the living world and other world, she can give people like Goku passes to go back and forth between both worlds if they have enough "credit", and she even got in an argument with King Yemma cuz he didn't know she was gonna give Goku the day pass, but she still got the OK. Also, for that witch to be on the world of the Supreme Kais, she would have to have either been born there, or have magic powerful enough to transport herself there like Baba.
They're clearly above ordinary humans, hence how in original DB, Baba was able to gather even dead fighters like Grandpa Gohan to fight for her..
Either massive plot hole being ignored, or they're at least of some level of divinity due to their magic.
