    5:04 I heard of a story about a miner who mined the stones of a mountain and had it tough. He looked around in sweat and saw a rich man in his cloaks and with slaves all around him. He wished to be him, and deity came down and granted his wish, and now he was a rich man.
    But as a rich man, he saw the King with all his wealth, and power and wanted to be him and again the diety came and granted his wish and now he was the King.
    As a King, he had it fine for a time, but then the day was very hot and looking at the sun he thought to himself, 'let me be the sun! then I am above them all!' and his wish was granted.
    Now he was the Sun. But then some clouds came by and blocked his sunshine and thought, 'those clouds are more powerful than I am! I want to be the clouds', and he became a cloud.
    He drifted like a cloud and thought that he was all-powerful until a mountain came in his path and stopped him, and he thought, 'this mountain is blocking me, better than me! I want to be the mountain!', and his wish was granted yet again.
    But as the mountain, he saw an old miner coming towards him and hacking pieces of him and exclaimed: 'that miner is taking pieces of me and I can do nothing about it! That man is so very much more powerful than me, let me be him.' And his wish was granted. Now he was the miner again and he was happy.

      And an often neglected implication of the story is that sometimes/often we need to actually walk that path to learn.

    Inequalities are a human condition. We need to find our own unique individual strengths either by cultivating it in ourselves or admiring it in others.
    However, there is a superficial quality missed in the analysis. Many in our modern society are in positions of authority, wealth, or power not because of the strength, wisdom, good looks, or abilities, but because they charm, cleverly persuade, or use people to achieve their goals. Hardly worthy qualities. How many people in our society "fail up?"
    It is agreeable to admire the true abilities in others. It is quite another thing to witness people propping themselves to positions they hardly deserve or attained by exploiting others by caressing egos or kissing butt.
    Where one achieves greatness through ability and hard work, admiration is certainly earned. Where one achieves it through conceit, selfishness, unscrupulous relationships, and the the exploitation of others...well, it's simply hard to have anything short of disdain and disgust for that behavior.
    In my own opinion, this is the reason for the decline of American society. We are not lead by the best of us, but by those who attained their positions and authority in questionable ways using exploitive techniques and cronyism. These people not only lack true integrity, intelligence, ethics, and wisdom, they are shallow, incompetent, and devoid of leadership qualities. And it is difficult to find value in such lecherous people.

    Plínio Corrêa de Oliveira is a Brazilian catholic writter, and he has a beautiful essay about envy. I read that thinking it wasn't a sin of mine, something I didn't have to worry about. Turns out he stroke me with the following idea:
    Sometimes you will meet someone who is unachievably better than you, better than what your very best could never be, and your sacred role on that meeting is to silently turn on the lights to make them shine more. Are you ready for that task, or would you be bitter at that position? The angels will notice your work, but not the world.
    And then I felt how weak I am against that sin.

    • @MrViktorolon
      @MrViktorolon 3 года назад +3

      @@josebaka3223 yes, i totally agree with you. I don't think I suffer under envy, but I can see I could have a weakness. I'm always happy with the success of others, and I also believe the same as you, we should compare ourselves just with our old ourselves.
      But see, it is easy to praise someone with another destiny. A doctor, a priest, a warrior...but imagine if you have a dream, you work hard on that and you meet someone living that dream, showing it is impossible to you to achieve that in your lifetime.
      Your dream can be unrealistic, even though it is humanly possible, just not for you.
      And all propaganda about being whatever you want it is a good propaganda. Strikes you hard and shapes out imagination. But life will be the opposite of to the most of us.
      When you say we should feel good about ourselves, let me tell you this: In Brazil, many people thinks that you can be like everyone if you put the effort on the apparence. If an intellectual talks and dresses like his teacher, he feels great enough. Instead of "fake it until you make it" it is just "fake it until you forget it is fake". They feel good about themselves and discourage true greatness. That's harmful to our country.
      There is a balance between striving for something great, dare to fight against the excuses of defeat...and knowing your limits. You can be fooled by false ideas of greatness and "defeatness".
      In my opinion, to know and love your destiny, I think you must love the highest good you can do, not the highest think you could do.

    The idea Walt had to turn the Queen into a self destructive character through the visualization of the Witch is incredible. What she is willing to do to herself is tragic and yet in her ugly form she is now free to be who she’s always been without needing to hide behind a mask. Her beauty she believes gives her power and yet it had mad her miserable. As the Witch there is freedom. The character is ironic in many ways.

    Great video. I try not to be consumed with envy and for the most part succeed. There is, as you say, joy in admiring excellence and the works of others. Listening to a great piece of music, admiring the talents of a great sporting exponent or watching a great movie has a pleasure all in itself. Rather than bemoaning the fact that I don't have level level of skill in that others do in that area, I tend to prefer to enjoy the fact that they do and that they're prepared to share it with the rest of the world. Similarly, I don't get envious of successful businesspeople, I like the fact that they generally employ a bunch of people and thus provide a living for them.

    What you say about admiration and envy is quite true, but there is something you are neglecting, I think -- where does the feeling we call disappointment fit in this continuum? Disappointment is not envy, but it arises from the realization that that which was admired was not worthy of admiration. I consider it to be more of a source of nihilism than envy itself. How is it possible to be 'safe' in the peak experience of admiration, if disappointment always looms large in the background as a meaning-destroying possibility?...

    Don't you think that American culture, which was previously a culture in which people envied one another or admired one another, has become a culture of resentment, in which people think (and say): "You are evil because you are powerful. Only people like I are good. Be like me, like us, or I and we will judge you morally. We are the good; you are the evil ones."
    Of course one could argue that this resentment ultimately originates from envy. But it is not necessarily so. It can very well be that one genuinely believes one is better, more empathetic, more loving, caring, a better person; in short, that resentment can come from a genuine belief in that moral rule and one own's moral superiority (even though this belief may often me intermingled with a feeling of envy hidden to one's self).
    Maybe you should make a video on resentment, which may either be a further consequence / reaction to envy (further to the ones given in this video), or which may be a genuine belief.

    I love your content but this one confuses me. Those who witness the peak experience are best able and well-advised to admire it. But earlier, you'd said that those who actually achieve the peak expereince themselves find it unfulfilling. So aren't we then admiring a falsehood? Do we only see the peak expeience as something admirable because we do not know first-hand how hollow it really is? And if we knew that truth, wouldn't we'd cease to admire it?

    its sad that currently we live in a period were the defining cultural trait in alot of countries is envy, the bad guy in almost any game or movie is a rich CEO, half of whats on tiwtter is about opression and privilege, we are taught to hate annyone that has some privilege we dont have, in fact we treat everything good as a privilege, hes rich? hes privileged. Hes in shape? hes privileged, instead of calling it a virtue to aspire to we try to asign almost everything to fate, yes theres people that are born in better positions, but we are going too far, when anytime annyone rich is mentioned that subconciously makes us look down on them like they are some evil XIX century factory buisnessman that treats their workers badly, anytime someone is in better shape or better looking we always chock it up to genetics, when in fact from a biological standpoint it makes no sense, we have undergone alot of natural selection, the fact that by definition most people currently cant be considered physically atractive speaks to a flaw in our lifestyles, clearly the fact that in the us 2/3 of the people are obese is not a genetic issue, yet we still have body positivity, not the kind that says ''dont hate yourself, focus on improving'' the kind that says ''youre perfect as you are, fat is healthy'' and even any the stereotype that people that try to get in shape are being superficial and engaging in vanity by focusing on something as lowly as caring for your looks, despite the obvious fact that we all care about looks because its biologically engrained in us that good looks are a sign of good health and therefore good for humanities survival wich deep down is our goal in one way or another. Im going to use the N-word as an example, im from spain, here altough we have a word that is considered the most accurate translation of the N-word we dont really consider it a great offense, if you say it to someone on the street randomly they might get mad, but just as they would get mad if you called them an asshole or whatever other insult that really carries no other meaning than ''hey im mad at you'', if i say youre stupid im atacking your intelligence, if i say ''hey fuck you'' im not really conveying any bad thing about you, only that i am angry at you, and yet somehow i feel wierd actually saying the N-word because ive seen time and time agin how any english speaker is terrified of saying it, sometimes shown by how they avoid using it, other times by seeing how they joke arround saying it but never do, because ofcourse that would have bad consequences. I think that for some reason we have convinced ourselves taht a word has more meaning than it should, and the same way we have convicned ourselves that succesfull people are evil, atractive people lucky with their genetics, and generally we have replaced admiration with envy in alot of cases, and thats probably the root of most of the current issues in most of the world. Also in spanish a synonym for envy is ''celos'' so that just adds up to what you said in the video

    • @martinpavlicek2299
      @martinpavlicek2299 Год назад +1

      I think you simplified a lot of things. Wanting to avoid envy is not an argument for ignoring social issues like systematic exploitation or oppression. It can be quite opposite. The individualistic self-centered attitude that keeps those systematic problem alive and ignores them often comes together with the envy. Rich corporations and their CEOs have the most power over the movies you mentioned. If you think our culture is full of envy, ask yourself who has the most power over production of the culture. Unfortunately those corporations and their hired marketers know very well how to grab someone's basic needs or desires, turn it to envy and self-centered individualism. They also know how to repackage it like fake and moralisticaly narcissist but feel-good symbols of either resistance or seemingly noble effort for good change. And they know how to gain money on all of this by attaching such story and identity to some brand selling it to you. It is same with movies. It is incredibly cynical. Nowdays they could openly admit that in some kind of comedy movie but people would still love it and laugh at it.
      I found videos of this author to be half way good. They have some good points and ideas but are sometimes wild and vague and drive on sentiment. Still they are somewhat interesting. This was the best or second best of those I saw. I was kind of worried the author could imply something against the politics of adressing social issues. Fortunately he did not go that way. Instead he even pointed out that the most villains of the stories he selected were actually privileged and in position of power. What I did not like was how he was using the word inequality without giving a second thought to pondering about what it means. He just listed many individual differences people may have. But this may be missleading if you jump to compare the ideas in the video with the public discourse of equality in society. The discourse of equality in society is not neceserarily centered around differences of individuals but rather uneven and dishonest relationships, interactions and attitudes. The video ended with great idea that is quite in tune with leftists. For example Marx as much as I know him puts emphasis on human finding objective meaning in work that is committed outside of him. I would say that it is pretty close to finding awe in and contributing to some beauty regardless of who or what is the beautiful one. The leftists do not want to simply take rich person's wealth. They want to gather together and organize and collaborate in such ways that help bring more of the beauty, supporting each other, educating each other and getting away with anonymous system that limits realisation of each ones as well as common potential. They see the many CEOs and billionaires as someone who lives in the center of that anonymous system and someone who managed to gain something from actually obfuscating others view and limiting them from realizing that potential. Meanwhile those billionaires pay a lot in marketing to maintain great public image, someone who gains money by witt and effort and who is charitable. Someone everyone could try to be. For leftists this is fabricated nonsense that is just meant to hook you not to question the system and buy even more of their products to seemingly become more productive etc.

    Seems you are confusing envy and jealousy. (5:55) That people can say in a good spirit "I envy you" should indicate this. Envy is openly admitted. But jealousy is the one that leads to destructive action. At 9:07 You then claim there is a potential positive benefit from envy, and, well, that's envy alright. Contrasted to jealousy you described before.
    (This is also reflected in other languages, like German: Envy is Neid, i.e. you'd like to have what others have. Jealousy is Eifersucht, i.e. you cannot stand someone else having something and it drives you furious, mad or resentful.)
    And then you went into kinda stating the obvious and totally missed the opportunity to examine how Amadeus' Salieri actually embodied a special mindset, an unusual approach presented for artistic purposes, so to speak, because Salieri wanted to destroy Amadeus yet considered him an inspiring idol that filled him with admiration and constituted the source of his life passion. The 'hybrid' psychology here stemmed from the fact that his music was so divine to him but the person himself so off-putting to him. - We could imagine that Salieri made his conduct, his quest to destroy Amadeus, an artistic expression. The character is about a mindset that with good reason ended up in a mental hospital (IIRC).
