- Star Wars is one of of the most popular cinematic series of all times, going beyond box office success, and changing lives. But why is it so powerful? I think the success of the saga can be traced back to a single four minute scene in the first film, A New Hope. In Obi-Wan Kenobi’s house on Tatooine, we are introduced to the intriguing, almost mythical back-story of Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker, and the Clone Wars that would eventually become the prequels-a story which, coming from the enigmatic wise man, ushers us into a living world of mystery and adventure that existed long before the beginning of the film, and will go on long after it is finished.
Here also we are introduced to the Lightsaber and the Jedi and the mysterious energy field they able to tap into: the Force. Such things appeal, both in old and new ways, to the primal human instinct for power, which is perhaps most influential when we are children, making us wish that we had Lightsabers, that we were Jedi who commanded the power of The Force.
In the words of Austrian Psychologist Alfred Adler, ““The fundamental law of life, therefore, is that of overcoming.” “The goal of the human soul is conquest, perfection, security, superiority.” “Put under the spell of the ‘must’ of life, he is drawn on by his constantly increasing longing for a final goal of superiority over the earthly lot that has been assigned to him, with all its unavoidable demands. And this goal that draws him on takes tone and colour from the narrow environment in which the child struggles for conquest.” “...there is something inherent which is part and parcel of life itself, a struggle, an urge, a self-development, a something without which life cannot be conceived. To live means to develop oneself” (Adler, 1938).
Both Adler and Star Wars teach us that power is not always evil, but can be good as well. Indeed power, strength-a kind, benevolent mastery over one’s environment and circumstances-are necessary in order to become a well adjusted individual. Hence the role of the archetypal wise man, played by Alec Guinness, who exists to spur young men (in this case, Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker) on to power.
Adler also realized that when faced with the inevitable and universal problems of life, people naturally prefer to avoid those problems, to make existence easier, throwing the load on the shoulders of other persons, obtaining our goals, if possible, without any cost, which, says Adler, is in fact not possible. So we often choose to pay no cost at all, and consequently achieve no goal.
The wise man does not tolerate the young man’s self-destructive weakness. With the eyes of wisdom, time, and experience, he pierces into the deepest desires of the youth, the desires the youth dare not admit even to himself, the desires he dare not hope may be possible. The wise man understands that the desires of the youth lie down the hard, narrow path, which weakness shies away from. Because of his expanded relationship with time, the wise man knows that the young man has a destiny, a destiny perhaps unknown even to the young man at present. And if the young man avoids that destiny, he will regret it, and the world will be the worse for it.
Ultimately, the wise man leaves the decision up to the young man. Because the responsibility lies with the young man alone. He must choose. No one can choose for him.
In Star Wars, the young man does choose his destiny. He sets out, not necessarily with the goal of saving the world, but with the simple goal of becoming like his father, which should be the preliminary universal goal of all men. Even though his father is imperfect (to say the least) Luke fulfills his destiny through the ultimate power of the Light: he goes beyond merely imitating his father and ultimately redeems his father.

Just wanted to keep you all updated on upcoming plans for uploads: this coming Saturday there will be a video on Grace & Dignity discussing Daoism, Schiller, and the way we hold ourselves, move our bodies, and interact with each other, with (of course) a critique of modern culture(s). The video will be in the vein of Jordan Peterson’s Rule to “Stand up straight with your shoulders back” (ie, the way we hold ourselves affects our entire mode of being), but will hopefully go far beyond this rule.
I had said I would post a video on the Garden as a symbolic foundation for individual liberty & a free society, but I’ve decided to move that video to sometime near the end of the month. While I absolutely hate-hate!-not doing something I said I would do, I think you’ll appreciate the reason for the delay when you see it. Given the content I’m trying to make, I tend to think it’s preferable to have a better video later than a sub par video sooner.
I am committing to a weekly Saturday upload schedule (unless a better day crops up), so there will be videos every Saturday for the rest of this month, if all goes well.
Thank you all for supporting the channel and helping it grow. It’s still difficult to fathom how far we’ve come in the last few months.

Great video. They don't make hero's journeys like that anymore.
For myself, the biggest flaw in Star Wars is that it doesn't present a vision for what replacing an evil Empire looks like. It's one thing to overthrow an Emperor; it's another to replace him with an order that people can actually live within, and if there's one, time-tested truth of history, it's that empty thrones lead to bloody interregnums. In both the original and sequel trilogies, this is something that's ultimately left unexamined, due in no small part I think to the very American instinct to view heroes as the underdog against tyranny, rather than the legitimate authority against chaos.
We're so used to thinking of ourselves as critics or rebels against corrupted institutions, we forget that even victorious revolutionaries have to rebuild what they revolted against. The whole point of rebellion is that the rebels become the new government, theoretically guided by better precepts than its predecessor. Else there would be no point in rebellion in the first place. Even Robin Hood looks towards the restoration of the good king Richard.
In the original trilogy's defense, that broader conflict wasn't the driving focus of the story, and as such didn't require a detailed epilogue to resolve. But the prequel trilogy shows the Republic as almost irrevocably corrupt, due to its size and age (which at least opens the question of whether the Republic deserved to come back), while the sequel doesn't even bother to show how the New Republic turned out before it's swiftly disposed of in favor of a redux of the same old conflict of plucky rebels vs prissy Imperials, with no indication that the outcome will be any different.
That is fatal to a story, even if the broader conflict isn't the driving force of the narrative. If nothing the heroes do lasts beyond their adventure, then the significance of their heroism is undermined.
My understanding is that Lucas originally intended to deal with this in his sequels, but so much for that. I think Star Wars Theory has a video on it.
Expanded Universe books and comics explored these ideas and the ramifications of TLJ in depth, but sadly they aren't canon.
Edit: Kind of like with Robin Hood, the Rebels seek to restore the old republic which is portrayed as good and benign in the OT (the "good king Richard"). Heck, the in-universe name given to the rebels is "The Alliance to Restore the Republic." One of my biggest disappointments with the sequels though was how they seemed to be terrified of portraying the New Republic in any depth or meaningful way. Take the New Republic out of the story, and the sequels would not really change at all. That's a serious problem in my opinion.
Not at all true, first that's what make The Empire Strikes Back so great, in that it doesn't spell it all out for the audience, the ending is left open.... thank the gods Lucas didn't box, label and shove down our throats some prebuilt and confined 'what happens next'....
And history is FULL of overthrown empires that are followed by a more relaxed 'interim' where no one is interested in 'rebuilding' the power that was recently broken apart... suddenly with the absence of outside influences regions look inward, local culture flowers, golden ages spawn - we, in our history classes, don't necessarily pay attention to 'what happens after the great empire ____ ' however there are plenty of large areas of history, fill with of interim.... The soldiers are released from their bonds and can finally go home. Crops are raised and affluence grows.... everyone is ready for a long period of peace... so no, empty thrones don't 'led to bloody interims'....... historians just don't get hard over the quiet parts of history.
Well spoken, Sir. You've perhaps articulated more precisely than most why the new episodes VII-IX fall so flat. There's no point to the story! No point even in winning victory over the resurgent tyranny, particularly if the chief architect of said tyranny turns out to be conveniently immortal, and can just be resurrected and thrown back in the storyline at will, complete with secret doomsday fleet..
As to the pre-Empire republic, I think the prequel installments missed a golden opportunity to portray the limits of benevolent good. The republic, it is implied, stayed peaceful for generations because of the protection of the Jedi Knights, a benevolent order that always could be counted upon to do good. There may not have been many of them. There was probably still conflict, strife and injustice in a huge and adventurous galaxy, but they were there, like boogeymen, semi-legendary in their own time, to keep the wrongdoers at bay. Which ultimately may have itself led the Republic to fall: With the faithful Jedi protecting the Pax Romana, beyond dispute or critique, seemingly invulnerable, the way was open for clever schemers like the future-Emperor to stoke regional conflicts which ultimately forced the Republic itself to equip a military and involve the Jedi in overt war. Seems to me the movies, as they turned out, missed a beat by portraying the Jedi as a sort of semi-official police force for the government to begin with. I think it would've been more to the point had they started out as more aloof, only becoming involved (with the possible exception of a few nonviolent objectors, like Yoda, perhaps) as they were forced to take partisan roles in intragalactic conflict. Maybe even there might have been rival Jedi generals, employed by different warring factions, like samurai fighting former colleagues as ronin, hired out to rival lords. It would also have left a more obvious way open for certain Jedi, like a young Anakin Skywalker, to become more acquainted with ambition, and fall to lust for power, as the video says...
I'll let you guys know when I'm finished with my alternate Star Wars Prequel screenplay. Should be ready in 20-30 years...when the CGI is up to snuff.

In Star Wars (Ani) the spot of darkness grows until the light is gone, except for a spot. Does it happen in reverse? Obi-Wan? Yoda? I don't know. Is there a constant changing, rotating of black to light and light to black? Seems to me that's our history and our fate. Most imaginings of the future don't imagine a next evolutionary step for humans, only technological ones. So, really, good wishes for expressing your vision.
PS dare we hope the current political leaders gambling all to maintain world domination will contain the spot of light that will grow to envelope their darkness, then ordinary people weary of force as a substitute for human relatedness will outgrow those in power, leaving them to their ends while we of inner strength move forward. Oh, dear, there I go again, longing for the garden.

@@davidhawley1132 Well-said. My conception of power is: the capacity for action. On a very fundamental level power means (a) the freedom of movement and (b) wisdom (i.e. knowledge together with intuition).
Most tyrants possess all of this, EXCEPT FOR that intuitive sense (very related to conscience) about the best means for pursuing the universal human aim of actively flourishing.
Tyrants turn out to be not only ignorant, but ultimately weak-because, as Giordano Bruno said, the knowledge of power (which is what the political conception of power obsesses over) is worse than worthless without, as he wittily says, the power of knowledge. In other words, tyrants are basically just idiots with out of control egoes who want to discharge all their bitterness towards life on others.
Plato's conclusion is that all tyranny is doomed to fail because tyrants can't get along with each other. Evil is doomed to fail because even evil can only accomplish things by participating in goodness-he uses the example of a band of pirates who are able to cooperate only to rob pillage and rape: these bands always devolve into petty infighting (see D. & R. parties in US)

Star wars is kinda dead to me and actually has been for a long time (almost tuned immediately out), but this vid made me actually remember how special those original movies were as a kid ... I was stoked about u referencing Adler, this guy was ahead of the game, I'm sure u read those 2 books by these japanese authors about Adlers teachings as well ... aside from primary sources of course. Keep em coming!

It's sad that it takes videos like this to bring a little bit of the magic back to Star Wars. These are the themes that you don't need told to you as a kid, you just get it. It's also what modern Star Wars is missing.
@@jimmie_collins The original Star Wars movies were directed towards kids who aspired to be powerful adults. The sequels, and modern films in general, are aimed at adults who want to be treated as vulnerable children.

I've commented on this video before, just over a year ago, and the fact that it's had an even deeper and more meaningful impact on me upon this rewatch is a true testament to your skills as a writer. I connect very strongly with Star Wars, especially the original trilogy, almost certainly because of the reasons you proposed in this video, but also because of more personal matters with my own father. I struggle very deeply with the concept of saving one's father from the belly of the whale, mainly because it has taken me a long time to come to terms with how similar I am to him. This video has helped me assemble some semblance of a strategy/direction to take with this aspect of my life, and for that I extend an incredibly sincere thank you.

I've just recently discovered your channel and I cannot stress just how much I've been craving content exactly like this. I've always had such a deep fascination with the Original Trilogy, it was after watching several documentaries about it's production that encouraged me to study film in college after all. But the deeply rooted philosophical narrative was always there and always present and I think that, deep down, we are all aware of this. Such is the whole point of this video, Star Wars taps into innate human desires so perfectly that it was practically predetermined to be a success.
This is the type of thinking that I adore to see on RUclips, and in general I guess, even in my own film course I rarely see topics of a similar calibre being discussed. So thanks man, I wish to make content like this myself but it's been really hard to approach films from a philosophical standpoint when one can't find what others are saying.

I agree with most of the content of your video, especially bringing in Adler. I think his contemporary, Carl Jung had an observation that is germane to the movie: "Logically, the opposite of love is hate, and of Eros, Phobos (fear); but psychologically it is the will to power. Where love reigns, there is no will to power; and where the will to power is paramount, love is lacking." In the movie, the Dark Side is pure will to power. The light side is that of love - the Jedi are not motivated by will to power but by love, the desire to help and protect others. It can also be seen in the constant urging by his mentors for Luke to not give in to anger and hate, which logically are the opposite of love.

Since I was a kid I wanted to create a story, let my imagination go wild! And so I started thinking about concepts, characters, quotes and about the entirety of my own world. But I never really did anything with it, because I was not very confident.
Now I'm writing again. But now I start over. I'm thinking about the core of the world, the most important parts and from there the story and the world get more complex.
Do it. And make sure to finish, even if it maybe doesn’t turn out as perfect as you want it to. You owe it to yourself.

Man, you reminded me why I loved Star Wars!
Star Wars really propelled due to its pioneering and innovative special effects that facilitated and made possible the telling of a uniquely creative story at the time, but I think the philosophy and history that some of the best films draw on are what make it really resonate, in the words of Lucas, like a "modern myth." I know for me, Star Wars sort of jump started my own interest in these "academic disciplines," and I still use Star Wars as a frame of reference or to help me better understand real world concepts and issues sometimes; not as a foundational definition or lens, but a way to help me better grasp these difficult things.
One cannot generalize about Luke Skywalker outside the context of the story without making mistakes, specifically, if one claims that the will to power is the same for everyone. Luke is unique in that he is materially bound to the force, that is to say he was born of a family in which the force is "strong". (One may question whether this is mysticism or not, but since Star Wars is fiction it doesn't matter much.) He is also living at a time when the need to act is a necessity. The encouragement and prodding that Obiwan gives specifically to Luke is motivated by the existential realities of their civilization, not merely an invocation to a typical farmer's boy that he better himself.

you forgot the central reason for the depth and metaphysical meaningfulness of this first one: Joseph Campbell--the great folklorist of universal fame. he was the main consulting person. the second set and what followed, had no J. Campbell to guide them, so they become parody of the earliest ones. Bill Moyers interviewed J. Campbell for one whole week to have him explain the philosophical/mystic hidden meanings he insisted to be included in the first set
“The will to power is a dangerous excuse. While it’s reason seems sound, it fails to regard how broad the abstract concept of power is. Late to this party, but in mentioning "the Garden" are you referring to Epicurean thought? It would be a nice balance to the theology.
