Alex Martell ...... In 'ancient times ' kings often didn't get to rule for a great many years because invariably they'd be killed in battle or would be assassinated. Dynastic infighting and territorial challenges etc, all played a part in kings having relatively short reigns. Britain has more or less been at peace for the majority of Elizabeth's reign and there have been only a handful of 'nutters' who've challenged her right to be Queen. Plus, as she's proven, she enjoys excellent health.

In my opinion, an even more spin chilling moment was when the royal family, all dressed for the funeral of king George was met with a grieving, almost ghostly queen mary, dressed in black with a veil giving Elizabeth the customary curtsy. That short, but powerful scene, must’ve sent shockwaves through elizabeth through and through. Imagine the matriarch of the family, whom you respect, look up to, admire, love and fear-almost, now bowing before you - the sovereign and monarch. That scene seared into my brain, just incredible.

I've often wondered how things might have been different for her on a psychological level if she had taken another name like her father and uncle before her did and kept her birth name to herself. Perhaps she would have been happier somehow, having another persona as Queen Victoria II while remaining Elizabeth behind closed doors. Still, either way, she had a formidable reputation to live up to considering the legacy of the first Queen Elizabeth. Perhaps she decided to keep her own name because in a way it gave her much needed strength throughout what was often a turbulent reign (at least in the family dynamics but there were also political goings-on as well). May she rest well until All Things End...

  • @calwells5612

    • @ds1868

Agreed. The first act by the new Sovereign is to decide which regnal name they want to be known by. This and other aspects of the immediate succession to the Crown are all stipulated by the Act of Settlement (1701) which formalised the Accession of the new Sovereign. The Americans are not expected to know this. They gave up any pretence for knowing the process of Accession once they declared independence in 1776.
