She's got a lotta depth. I spent a few years living in the East Village, Alphabet City, in the late seventies and eighties and grew to know and love Nuyorican poetry. The passage of the poem mid-way is from Pedro Pietri's "Puerto Rican Obituary", one of my favorite poets and one of my favorite poems. Not at all surprised then that she's from the Bronx. You can't write a song like this unless you are a Nuyorican. What a powerful, smart, cutting, haunting, fearless, beautiful song.

This is one of the most powerful songs I've ever heard. From the album when I discovered it last year, to this very day I've lost account of how many times I've listened to it. And to whoever I can, I'm telling: listen to this. The cultural relevance is the key to why is so riveting. When I saw the thumb for the video I freaked, literally. Now I'm in tears as I write this. I'm from America, but like South. Latin America to be most accurate to "americans". We're so afar from our cultural traces and roots here nowadays, sometimes most are ashamed of it, but this rescues a pride that goes much further into who we are. I am really sad I have not enough resources to help, even more when this song did so much for me and my life. I just feel so capable when listening to it, I feel able to just be something, and that's more than anything I could ask for. Thanks for the video and hope this gets to as many people as possible.

    [Verse 1]
Oh I just wanna go to work --
And get back home, and be something
I just wanna fall and lie --
And do my time, and be something
Well I just wanna prove my worth --
On the planet Earth, and be, something
I just wanna fall in love
Not fuck it up, and feel something
    [Verse 2]
Well lately, don’t understand what I am
    Treated as a fool
Not quite a woman or a man
    Well I don’t know
    I guess I don’t understand the plan
    [Verse 3]
    Colonized, and hypnotized, be something
    Sterilized, dehumanized, be something
    Well take your pay
And stay out the way, be something
    Ah do your best
But fuck the rest, be something
    [Verse 4]
Well lately, it’s been mighty hard to see
Just searching for my lost humanity
I look for you, my friend
But do you look for me?
    [Instrumental]
    [Verse 5]
Lately I’m not too afraid, to die
I wanna leave it all behind
    I think about it sometimes
Lately all my time’s been movin slow
    I don’t know where I’m gonna go
Just give me time, I’ll know
    [Bridge 1]
    Oh, any day now
    Oh, any day now
    I will come along
    Oh, any day now
    Oh, any day now
    I will come along
    I will come along
    [Recording]
Dead Puerto Ricans who never knew they were Puerto Ricans
Who never took a coffee break from the 10th commandment
    To kill, kill, kill
The landlords of their cracked skulls
And communicate with their Latin souls
    Juan, Miguel, Milagros, Olga, Manuel
From the nervous breakdown streets where the mice live like millionaires
And the people do not live at all
    [Instrumental]
    [Outro]
From el barrio to Arecibo, ¡Pa’lante!
From Marble Hill to the ghost of Emmett Till, ¡Pa’lante!
To Juan, Miguel, Milagros, Manuel, ¡Pa’lante!
To all who came before, we say, ¡Pa’lante!
To my mother and my father, I say, ¡Pa’lante!
    To Julia, and Sylvia, ¡Pa’lante!
To all who had to hide, I say, ¡Pa’lante!
To all who lost their pride, I say, ¡Pa’lante!
To all who had to survive, I say, ¡Pa’lante!
To my brothers, and my sisters, I say, ¡Pa’lante!
    ¡Pa’lante!
    ¡Pa’lante!
To all came before, we say, ¡Pa’lante!

Hell yes. I was SO glad Sharp Objects used this song because I wanted as many people to hear it as possible. This song is a heartrending tribute to the strength of Latinx Americans everywhere, particularly Puerto Rico. If this broke your heart, donate to Hispanic Federation or PrimaFund or somewhere else you researched to help the people our government has failed so badly. Pa'lante siempre, and thank you Hurray for the Riff Raff for being so creative & badass!

I'm a white boy (old boy??) from England. but the Navigator really moved me and I rate it as one of the half-dozen best albums of the last decade. Saw HFTRR live finally in London this autumn - the most recent album is pretty special too - and they lived up to my expectations. but if you haven't heard The Navigator, give the whole album a go

Having grown up half Puerto Rican and half Caucasian, I've long felt neither group accepted me. My skin is white, I don't speak Spanish, but my hair is true afro curly and my body is too curvy for a typical white man. I believe this is why I've felt separation from my people, but this video, this song... I felt Puerto Rican pride for the first time in a long time. Thank you for this.

    • @alecsanderhamilton9224
      @alecsanderhamilton9224 3 года назад +14

Yo bro. The skin color as a Puerto Rican affects you if you are black or white and not the stereotypical Trigueño appearanced brown latino. I am Trigueño and 100% Rican. My bro was born half white and half PRican. He was born with curly blonde hair. It was cut and it darkened to brown and straightened.
We all struggle with identity in America and the world. And even your Spanish if raised in P. R. (PeRrey) you would have had moments you sat confused about being colonizer vs colonized, of the people or of the masters. This gets affected each time you make a dollar and lose a dollar and what you do with the dollar. Drinking it up with homies en el barrio has its perks and depressants. Saving up money en el barrio to get out or upgrade, you will be faced with another dilemma of crisis. If you become somebody and become real rich... en el barrio when u visit you will either have an estranged relationship or a strong connection or reconnection to it.
It happens to us all. Watch blood in blood out. Its mexican but it's a very latino in america and in the America's experience. Even Bob Marley went thru it. It's common amongst Jamaicans, Blacks. Even Europeans go thru it. Life is hard without a road map. But you're probably on your way to realizing what your truth will be.

Love this lady whom i discovered not long ago. But if i had anything I'm not in favor of are "poor me songs". When you beg for love you might just get pity, if you're lucky! Never empower the other side by declaring that what they're trying to do is working out very well for them. Keep doing what you're doing and that will yield the results we seek. I'm so glad that you have ventured into non traditional latin music. I love it!

How the destruction as a result of Nature digs deep inside one's soul and ruins not only the home without but within. She says it so powerfully and so forcefully and so honestly. Whoever shot the video was spot on with movement......blending perfectly with the song. The visuals were stunning. The song is a jewel. My heart STILL goes out to the people of Puerto Rica & ALL they have had to endure from this current administration!!
In Spirituality & the "Everything happens for a reason" - water is about CLEANSING!!! I'm holding the vision that Puerto Rico will either become an official state of the U.S. - though I feel the biggest strength would be letting the U.S. go since you've seen how "helpful" they are to you!!
You are STRONG SPECIAL PEOPLE & you have a very special island that you have the opportunity to rebuild & GROW!! The PEOPLE NEED to BELIEVE that!!!!

wow.... what an amazing work of art. SXSW website brought me here to be humbled LOL... and simultaneously INSPIRED and MOTIVATED by this work. Spoke to me not just as a music fan, an aficionado of music videos and fine art, not just as a musician and artist... but as . HUMAN. i loved it.. it was raw, yet polished... heartfelt and inspiring. captured the beauty of the people and location impeccably. And, what a great great song, powerful lyrics and singing... BRAVO

Je découvre maintenant. J'adore toutes ces ruptures d'harmonies. Des plages lentes. Les sons de la nature. Et le cri révolté. Le chaos sous votre lumineuse chanson, mâtinée d'espoirs. Je réécoute illico.
