Explore the captivating journey of the band Snot, a group that defied the nu-metal label, carving a niche as a rock band with a punk heart. Formed in 1994, founder Mikey Doling, influenced by funk-punk, joined forces with frontman Lynn Strait, a charismatic yet complicated personality. With diverse influences ranging from metal to punk, Snot quickly rose from Santa Barbara to the LA scene, earning respect and facing challenges.
Discover the band's unique camaraderie, fueled by Lynn's complex character and his run-ins with the law. Lynn's raw vocals and the band's fusion of funk, punk, and metal set them apart, creating a genre they dubbed "Americore." Snot's rapid ascent led to a record deal with Geffen Records, releasing their only studio album, "Get Some," in 1997.
Despite facing challenges, including a controversial incident at Ozzfest, tragedy struck in 1998 when Lynn Strait lost his life in a car accident. The surviving members coped by creating a tribute album titled "Strait Up," featuring collaborations with artists like Serj Tankian, Corey Taylor, and Jonathan Davis. The band disbanded, leaving fans to wonder about their untapped potential.
Learn about Snot's post-tragedy endeavors, including a brief reunion with new vocalists, a live album titled "Alive!" in 2002, and recent announcements of a documentary about Lynn Strait. Join us as we delve into the highs, lows, and the enduring legacy of Snot, a band that left an indelible mark on the nu-metal era.

Please do a video on "Machines of Loving Grace" 🙏✌️
Criminally underrated band, and everyone should check out their album.
Fuckin right.
Absolutely, amazing and solid record, unique then, unique meow. I gave it a solid run through listen a few times working overnights the last few years
Can we stop with the term criminally underrated already? Jesus it’s obnoxious
Fuck the record, and fuck the people
I've heard of them, but never listened to them.
Thank you for this. I've always felt like Snot was a band cut tragically short.
Our pleasure!
When Snot played in my town San Antonio, the band let me and my older brother in their tour bus. These guys are genuinely nice and gave us stickers, patches n stuff. I was just a kid at the time. These dudes tore it up playing. I miss these guys.
yeah the stories I read about Lynn made it seem like he was a genuinely good dude.
hell yeah san antonio!! where was the show?
@@SIGHBOY6 San Antonio music hall, fabulous shows !!!
Yeah bro. It was at White Rabbit. Old school place.
My old band opened up for Snot 6 months before Lynn died. Got to hang with him back stage for a bit. He was just chilling with Dobbs. I asked him what he was listening to at the time and he told me how much he loved the science album from Incubus. Jamie Miller and Sonny Mayo were really cool too. Saw Snot 3 times and they never disappointed!!! RIP Lynn & Dobbs….
Their drummer is incredible. He now plays in Bad Religion. Having the chops to step in for Brooks Wackerman means you are freaking incredible.
Kinda ironic because of Mr Brett.
Dude he's a fucking machine, such a crazy drummer always looked up to him.
I saw Snot as the opening act for Soulfly at my very first live concert, which was at the Glass House in Pomona California in 1997.
Snot stole the show, and I was amazed at how energetic and powerful their live show was at the time.
As good as Soulfly was, Snot definitely was the highlight of the concert, and being in such a tiny venue(it held like around MAYBE 200-300 fans) was an amazing experience. I remember hearing that Lynn died in a car wreck and I felt terrible for a few days.
RIP Lynn.
I've gotta get my Snot CDs out now. Get Some, Alive and the Strait Up tribute are all freaking awesome from start to finish. Just push play and listen until the end
I will always remember that not only was the front man killed, Dobbs the dog was with him too. Neither survived.
I remember really liking "The Box" when I first heard it on the radio in the late '90s when I was in my teens, but then never hearing about Snot ever again after that. I never realized then that the singer died so soon.
I was very fucked up one night and played that song for someone telling them a box would ruin their life. 6 months later they got caught for stealing a money box and shit went off the rails... Snot warned them.
Snot had so much potential. That album was so good. I still rock that album from time to time.
That sounds like one cool mom
I played that Strait Up cd so much back in high school. It was one of my go to cds.
Lynn sounded like a fun dude, I remember first hearing Get Some after HED PE on a shuffle and totally digged it.
Love this band. I remember buying their CD from Best Buy back in 1997 before anyone ever heard of them! I would agree as well, bands like KoRn, Snot, and Deftones are much more than just your average nu metal band.
I know you had done a fantastic video on Snot previously, and as I said in that video. Snot in my opinion is the best one-album band. Get Some was fantastic in 1997, and it is still fantastic now!
thanks, that was 3 years old and only 8 minutes. I consider this to be way more detailed and better presented.
RIP LYNN & DOBBS
LYNN WAS MY BOY WE WOULD KICK IT AFTER THEY PLAYED THEIR MPLS tour dates...they all were super down to earth humble great group of musicians
I was at that Ozzfest show in 98 in Mass. It was the first concert I was allowed to go to by myself & was my in my top 10 concerts of all time. Snot was one of my favorite bands & seeing them live was incredible!
Speaking of Manhole, I'd love a retrospective on Tairie B from her early rap career to Manhole/Tura Satana, My Ruin, etc.
Great video, you show the bands not only to a bigger audience, this is such a cool tribute for every band you present the artists and the projects/bands.
Amazing videos.
Thank you very much!
I went to school with John, our local record stores were covered from floor to ceiling with Snot posters 🙂
Great doc. I haven’t listened to Snot in forever. I'm original from Ojai so these guys made mad noise in the 805 back then. Really such a tragedy. I have no doubt they would have been huge.
Lynn had such a perfect sandpaper like voice that I've never heard anyone replicate since
Holy Shite, finally, thank you! much respect, \m/ \m/
you're welcome.
One of my forever favorite bands. In first heard Lynn's voice on Manhole's album and instantly loved his groove. I bought the album when it released in my country and I still listen to it very often.
It has a totally unique sound.
Awesome channel bro. Loved your Verve Pipe story
I appreciate it!
I love the song Absent . But its sad it seemed very foreshadowing of his death . The tribute album was great too . Strait Up RIP Lynn !
Get Some was great, but I loved the song: Absent. The direction it seemed they were headed, they probably would've been huge.
Agreed. Lynn’s charisma alone would’ve made them a fixture on MTV. Not to mention all Snots peers loved Lynn and the band so they would’ve been playing some big venues with maximum exposure
I remember getting to meet Snot at Ozzfest 98'. What a nice bunch of guys. I miss them. They rocked!!!
Will forever be one of my fav bands. Recently acquired Get Some & Strait Up on vinyl
You should do a video about killing joke
On my to do list
that would be fantastic!!!!
I had the pleasure of seeing Snot in the summer of 97 at The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, New Jersey. They were awesome live, and Lynn had a great stage presence. It's horrible to think that he would be gone a little over a year later. RIP Lynn and Dobbs! Gone but never forgotten.
I would've left out the last part about the rapper named $not. Not even worth mentioning. But my dad used to play Snot's "Get Some" on his stereo in the living room. I've recently watched the "Stoopid" video a few times. I like the visual aesthetic. Miss when the world looked and felt that way even though I can barely remember anything. That grainy vhs quality really is the only thing I have left to see that again
I discovered snot thanks to the strait up album.
I went back and bought the “get some” album and loved it and still jam it to this day!
Glad I had the privilege to see this band.. R.I.P. Lynn and Dobbs..
Totally forgot about this album, I had it back in the day. Hidden gem for sure.
Get Some is a absolute masterpiece.. hands down if still around today Snot would be legends selling out arenas
I saw them at ozzfest 98 and at the 9:30 club in dc, Lynn was there for the strange land tour and he came out to cameo for a song but I can’t recall what song or band it was .
%100 Underrated Band I Still Listen To Get Some and The Live Album Snot Alive All the time So Glad i have The CDS Still
Makes You Wonder What could have been if Lynn had lived
Hope they still put out the Documentary
You've done it AGAIN!!! Never heard of "SNOT".... but, now I have!!!
I've gotta shuddup and finish watching.
I shall return.....
thanks
Another Rocking Video!!!!
Rock on!
I still remember hearing about Lynn and Dobbs death and it really hit hard... so tragic and unnecessary.
I loved Get Some and was looking forward to their follow-up.
I'm grateful I got to see them on Ozzfest '98.
I don't recall you mentioning the Lajon Witherspoon of Sevendust
Thank you for covering Snot. Pisses me off they are throwing them out the algorithm.
one of my neighbors back in the day had a Boston Terrier that LOVED eating lemons. i'd feed him little slices from over the fence and watch him make hilarious sour-faces before he would go back for more, just to make similar faces again. he was cute lol
I'm so jealous you guys got lemon trees. UP here it's way too cold to grow them.
Speaking of Snot I would love to see a video on Casey Chaos and his band Amen which had former Snot members Sonny Mayo, John Fahnstock and Shannon Larkin in the lineup.
HOW DID I MISS THIS!??
Snot was my favorite band in high school which was in the late '90s and his passing hit me like a freight train. I'm not the only one say this but they would have been huge. Everything about this band was unique and the fact that they were only able to write essentially one and a half albums is also extremely sad. I also agree this band should never have been considered nu metal
Forgive if i missed it in this video but it's probably worth noting that dez was on the tribute album. Great video btw.
thanks
Snot were also heavily influenced by the band Helmet.
Great choice as usual. I saw Snot open for Sugar Ray during their first tour. The bass player came into the rather small venue with a tall blonde girl on each arm. The band absolutely tore up the stage.
"Hatched a scheme to talk directly to their friends.." Lol. That phrasing makes it clear how evil record labels are.
Dam I remember Snot. Good video man . Sad passing about Lynn.
Dude did you ever Hear Moth? Great band -Aeiou, two days… great songs always wondered what happened to the band . It was impossible to find until not long ago. I had to relay on the cd to listen to it.
I met mikey and Roy mayorga during the soulfly Australian tour at the big day out and they were so cool! Knowing now what Mikey was going through at the time got me hard in the feels
Great video.
thanks
You're probably right.
Absent is one of their best.
The tribute record is Amazing! One of my faves!!!! \m/
I got to see them on Ozzfest that yr with the giant toilet…it killed me and my friends when Lynn passed snot would be a force still today that guy did have it, when u see it u know it..I advise everyone to listen to Get some, wicked great album..Oh what could have been…great video
I saw them in the nineties with Life Of Agony when Whitfield Crane was singing for LoA. It was a good show. Lynn kept screwing up, thinking he was in Sioux City Iowa instead of Sioux Falls South Dakota, also thinking for a short while that he was in North Dakota instead of South Dakota. He said one of the members of the band, after playing South Dakota, had then played a show in every state.
Great video as always
Appreciate that
i remember back then my friends were playing a venue in cleveland and we were in a back room waiting for the time slot and looking at all the band stickers and graffiti and saw snot`s name up on the wall and thinking
that was a awesome name for a band
I knew lyn. We both liked dope. Tried to start a band with him but not to be. Lyn hit perry Ferrell of Jane's addiction one night in Santa Barbara. It was beautiful. He hit a cop one night in Santa Barbara. Knocked him on the ground but the cop got up a hurt lyn. Lyns mom was cool. Sleep well lyn.
Snot would have been massive. I know they wear the crown. They would've been bigger than Korn or Bizkit.
Please do a video on "Machines of Loving Grace" 🙏✌️
Hey do you think you can do a story on the Norwiegn band TNT they are my favorite metal group and i would love to see them on your channel!
I thought Sevendust was very close to Snot, hell “Angel Son” song is for him I thought? Great video.
Edit: spelling
Yes it was and sonny mayo joined them after snot and played with them
Say something for the record! Tell the people what you feel!
F the people & F the record!
✌️🐝➕
Love their album and still jam that and the Strait Up album.
I always describe Snot to people who haven't heard of them as a louder, angrier Sublime.
A good story in the Nu Metal genre would be when Spineshank was announced as the winner for Best Metal Album only to be then “corrected” to Metallica. Something like that and I don’t really feel like looking it up, but I do remember some kind of BS. I was a huge Spineshank fan around Height of Callousness and Self Destructive Pattern, the latter album being the one in the controversy.
im really curious what Snot would have put out after the first album. Even more than sublime I feel like Snot had a LOT more potential in terms of creativity.
Shannon Larkin got his head shaved in the Pantera video ✌🏼
You thought it was Nü-Metal but it's Snot. Thank you very much. (Mic drop)
One of my favorites, man, what couldhave been.
My favorite band
I think Mikey was more mad about $not being a trash ass rapper. I legit checked him out. Didn't feel like dude was worth a hot mic in front of him. but maybe I'm an old dude yelling that cant play music too.
“Say something for the record …..tell the people what you feel.”
I was gonna go into the story about that… I should have added that
Love the Snot live album
Thank you! 🤘🏻✌🏼🍻
You bet!
Saw at Ozzfest.. Love them
Hated that they fell into that nu metal thing. I used to play the snot single everytime i djed at metal gigs and parties here in cape town south africa. Always got people on the floor. Still listen to that album.
My friend, Misha, was Good friend with Lynn Straight. He was in a band called SummerCamp, and he was supposed to be in the tribute video Angels Son but scheduling conflicts prevented that. I personally used to be Facebook friends with Mikey, but he didn't like my political opinions and severed ties with me. As far as the Snot vs $not thing...I think Mikey overreacted. He said there's only one snot, and felt betrayed by Fred. Now Part of me gets it. It's like finding out your friend is dating your ex, but on the other hand. Mikey had years, if not Decades to do something with the Snot name. And aside from those live shows, he just rebranded the band as TONS, and still did nothing. They could have made a new album or at least a new songs, but they didn't. Which tells me he doesn't care. Sure, they're making this doc, but I would prefer a new album, and again. if he truly cares then why didn't he file a copyright suit with $not?
Love and miss ya Lynn and SNOT…
one of the best bands of all time
Damn man , I had always heard he nodded out (heroin) at the wheel causing the crash ! All these years that is what I had heard . Not that it changes anything . He is still dead . But if dope had caused it , it would have been more tragic as I have lost countless friends to H and Fynt , Over 50 friends easy in the last decade or two . Not even counting acquaintances . By Gods grace im 5 years clean as I still watch them fall sadly .
From what I read that stretch of highway had a bunch of safety issues
R.I.P Lynn Strait that guys had so huge potentoinal but all ended, unfortunately
Yessssss!!!!!
Was going to get to see them on a bill with Sevendust, Human Waste Project, Limp Bizkit and Incubus but sadly Lynn had just passed a few weeks prior. I remember talking to Morgan and LJ and they were both devastated. A band that would have been as big or bigger as all those bands they were touring with before the accident.
Still one of the best bass riffs in a song ever
Something is broken if you have to go through mangers and producers to talk to a friend. Personally I enjoyed the tribute album. Fun little fact Mr Brett is about the guy from bad religion
I never seen your face before you look like that one guy from spider man 2 the pizza 🍕 guy 😂
link?
Rad video, bro
I'm glad Lynn decided to not kill Dez for coming at him like that.
I was trpping balls for a whole day before I went to Ozzfest 98 and seen Snot. Remeber that giant toilet in Limp Bizkits set sitting in the blazing heat with my then girlfriend, sick as a dog.
When i heard the dog died i became a million times sadder
Remember the angel's son! Strait up!
A criminal committing crime to feed there addiction is different to a criminal committing crime for a criminal life .The addiction nis the possessing demon that has to be fed.
Think I watched this before and I still do not remember Snot.
RIP Lynn & Dobbs
