    Being efficient and consistent is not "cheating" it´s literally the difference between being able to live off from your profession or not.
    BTW I think filters are perfectly fine if they support the context of the artwork. Art is literally the *only* profession being elitist about it. You use a lot of those even in many related professions like 3D, VFX, etc. Heck even in music production filters are standard.

    Let’s talk about that. I agree. So i trace when i need to mass produce. traditional artists copy especially if they have a specific style so they copy what people like. all artists “cheat.” I have proof that I am able to draw from scratch. It takes me so much time to do it so i jump to the end of my final lineart. people claimed i cheated so i went on twitch and did live paintings from scratch. i kept the videos so people know i have spent 30 years developing my skill to know when i can cheat and when i shouldn’t.
    These aren’t cheaters. we’re skilled and know what true art is. Now let’s talk about art theft…

    i let people who trace do their thing, concentrate on my own art, and don’t witch hunt, but it still bothers me when non-professionals do it. tracing is a great way to learn, but in my fandom, people do it so they can quickly post on socials for attention.
    i guess it depends on ones motives, and that’s only for them to decide… just don’t look down on me bc i like doing it the hard way - its fun!

      Just like you’re virtue signaling for attention? Lol. Cmon. It only bothers you because your ego is getting triggered about it. Other people are getting attention for easy, you wish you could get attention for your perceived higher struggle. But they’re in all likelihood applying themselves just as hard as you, just with a different focus.

    Tracing can be considered cheating. But the way Ross does it is different. He actually understands the art fundamentals and you can tell the difference between someone like him and someone who does not know how lighting, anatomy and colors work. I think he's just doing this because he has to pump out these videos fast. If I were in his shoes I would've just traced rather than spending many hours building the figure from scratch.

  • @Chaos_v37

    Tracing can be a learning method. It can help develop muscle memory. I don't think artists should consistently do it but beginners could benefit from it.

    • @joshknightfall
      @joshknightfall 2 года назад +4

      Meh. I’ve discovered that these art dogmas are the killer of creativity. If sketching is essential to your expression, then yes tracing will hurt your art, maybe. But not if your ideas and execution are not dependent on doing everything from scratch. It’s not a competition. The only reason people frame any of this shit as “cheating” is because of ego or capitalism.

      Tracing is NOT learning anything.
      It is not a method of attaining any form of "muscle memory", (it's not as if it is a sport that needs muscle memory).
      It's just lazy and all you are doing is tracing outlines that will always be changing depending upon the pose of the character.
      So when you trace, you are just wasting your "art-time" not learning anything and worse, NOT progressing. Not moving forward. Not learning.
      And no, I am not including tracing parts of your own artwork in order to speed things up.
      Traced artwork and references always look like just that; traced.

  • @fatassval

    I don't think tracing real life references is one tad of a problem since it helps you memorize the curves abd shapes through muscle memory. It's like a building block to perfect and mend your errors. Ross is way too good at what he does and i don't see a damn problem in it. Neither I or you have the status to call someone out and call it a sin. They're not doing any harm like tracing someone's artwork, so it's totally fine :/

    Sorry guys, projectors were invented by painters to cheat. If you're a pro, you do whatever it takes to get the appropriate quality as fast as you can. That's what it takes to be a professional (IE, make money from your works). Hobbyists take their time and pour their soul into their artwork. Professional get it out the door at an acceptable level, through whatever means possible.
    The problem is, like she said, you have to be good for those cheats to give you an acceptable quality level.

    For anyone leaving a comment on the "cheating" aspect, here's a hint - the hidden secret is that it's VERY OBVIOUS to anyone who watches this video whether or not you watched the video before commenting.
    Think of commenting before watching is like someone trying to cheat by using a book title to write a book report rather than reading the book to see what it's about.
    You're essentially publishing proof to anyone of what kind of person you are right before you post your opinion...but did you give them any reason to give your thoughts value?

  • @QuitJakinAround
    @QuitJakinAround 9 месяцев назад

    its not cheating. even without the use of tools like photos of lets say a specific person who wants an artist to do a portrait of them, in so called "free-hand" the artist still would measure the literal human with a proportional divider or measuring stick or other such tools. it's like people think an artist is someone that uses zero tools and just puts pencil to paper to create this accurate likeness of the commissioner... everyone has slightly different proportions and if you want anything that resembles you... your gonna want your artist to use the best tools available. shading and layering... kinda hard to cheat that as well. some people are just haters and to them I say... put your own work out there and we'll scrutinize it as much as you do ours.

    Tracing is something that helps you if you use it correctly. When I would trace, it would be to see how an artist drew certain lines. I would try to replicate by tracing over their line and seeing if I can capture the same motion. Now on the other hand it can hurt you if you are tracing the lines without thinking what motions you should use, your trace should not match up 1:1

    Great video! :) I enjoy watching your channel, you always have good points :)
    Just yesterday we had a conversation on discord about tracing and how it's always presented as black and white: one side yells it's absolutely forbidden and it's cheating and the other side is yelling how "even professionals do it". And both sides seem to forget that it's not yes or no thing, although still pretty simple.
    Professionals trace because it's faster - they already know all the fundamentals and they could have done it without tracing, photobashing or photomanipulation but it would take them a lot of time. Also since they have the skills, they can do it well and build up with painting.
    Beginners shouldn't trace because they usually do it thoughtlessly and just to make their art look good (surprise: it doesn't! it's usually obvious that it was traced because the rest of skills isn't there) and to get more likes. They don't realise they slow down their progress.
    I moderate different digital art groups since years now and I've seen many beginners stuck on the same level for years because they kept using shortcuts. I even saw some that regressed because they started tracing and stopped working and thinking.
    I also saw some great videos how to learn with tracing, e.g. Proko explains how to study anatomy with tracing :)

    Ciao Erica🍷 I’m a new subscriber and my question is, If I take a gag or pose from one of my favorite illustrators such as Jack Davis, and use one or two of the props in his single panel humorous illustrations but the scene and character/characters are completely different, would that be considered a major no no in the professional world of art? Stealing a gag or idea from another artist makes the job easier and faster, wouldn’t it? And btw, what I create is not for retail purposes only personal gifts and cards.

    • @aki_anyway
      @aki_anyway  9 месяцев назад

      Hi 💫 It always depends on what you're using your art for and how much you take from the original art.
      In your case, if it's just for personal gifts, go for it. As a general rule, you should not take someone's original idea and creative input and act like you made it up yourself, especially when it comes to gags. You can take the gag's concept as an inspiration and give your personal interpretation, or, if you're posting on social media, give credit to the original artist who had the idea.
      If, instead, you're just taking a few details like a few poses or props, and remixing them in your own original concept, then it should be fine.

    i was commissioned to draw a sword from this one character, so i drew it but it looked extremely similar to the reference photo and i got scared that people might assume i traced it or something. i thought about changing the shape or add some details but changing the shape or the details will not make it that original sword.. when is it actually considered as cheating? Of course i need to draw the exact shape of the sword and take the exact colors of the sword. But it really will seem like a copy pasted drawing. How do you prevent this?????

    • @aki_anyway
      @aki_anyway  Год назад

      I would say that it all depends on the final use of the drawing. For example, if you are to draw something for commercial use, you will have to pay attention that your art does not infringe any copyrighted material. If that was the case, you would have to change the sword to make it look different enough.
      But, if you are drawing something for a private person, like in your case, it's ok to copy the sword as it is. That is what it was asked of you and, even if you traced, there would be no problem.
      As I say in the video, there is no problem with using shortcuts here and there. Some people might accuse you of cheating and tracing, but my suggestion is to ignore them and keep doing your own thing.

    Creating and stealing(full trace) are two different concepts. You should go back to art school if you’re failing to realize what tools are used for.

      I think AIs can become a useful tool for artists to improve their work and find inspiration. However, I think that the process of using an AI to generate art should not be considered 'creating art', as you are just feeding a machine some images and hoping for the best.

    i don't agree with u
    it's not teaching ross draws didn't trace it's making him self a reference because of the time
    sam does art film his process and he use refrences not tracing
    they did study the prespective and art basic rules but they use references to make it look pretty but at the same time it will be quick so i don't really agree with u
    they really try and tried to be better they r artists for years now and they have other things to do rn so they have to do these things and it's not cheating
    + u can't really end anyone's career by having some reasons that we all use to do quick and beautiful art
    and yeah this is it ^-^
    i'm not trying to be rude but this is the truth :)

      She’s not trying to end anyone’s career?? Did you even understand what she said? She literally explained that using references or tracing over a photo to create something completely new (like RossDraws does) isn’t cheating and is actually really really helpful. The start was ironically meant and never tried to harm anyone. Including the fact that she also managed to show some examples of what’s okay and what isn’t like plagiarism and stuff like this. Everything you mentioned in your comment is summed up in the video. Please consider watching the video from beginning to end to actually understand the irony and sarcasm as well as the so important facts she listed.

    I have always considered free hand drawing even tracing a image. I mean you practice drawing images so much you are tracing the image. Tracing kinda brings Leonardo Davinci down a bit, but do anything long enough you are using some simple cheat others new to it are not doing. Always wondered how major artist could have so many copies in the distant past, Davinci had a group of artist help create copies.
