Love the distinction of “guides” not rules. Guides give you a way into a drawing but then you can compare with life or photo reference to see what is unique to your subject. And those unique parts are what really bring the drawing to life. Thanks, Sam!
This video really helps me because the guidelines, as Sam said, are for beginners starting out, but the more you get experienced in drawing, the more you can start adding your own style and "breaking" the rules (guidelines) for how you see fit.
And the original artist did not like what was "fixed" too. They submitted the art bc they want _actual_ advice/criticism that Kooleen didn't even give.
Sam's videos do really help me get motivation to draw, i can always learn something new or just watch about things i already knew. I'm happy that Sam stayed out of the drama and actually tried to teach us that drawing a side profile has no rules and easy ways how we can draw side profiles. as a person that struggles to draw side profiles these ways seem to actually be simple and understandable, i just want to thank Sam for being here to teach us and also for being so calm
It's almost as if different races will have different physical apperances oOo When will these "Artists" realize that not everyone is going to fit into the perfect "One size fits all" structure?
Even most artist knows this. It's mostly people who only know how to draw one way and try to apply that as a set rule when we all have different styles
I think a lot of people don't do enough life studies of the different shapes the human face can have. They stick to their box that is their style and don't branch out. Not saying that is wrong but it is wrong to tell others that your way is the right way, because that really gives beginners the wrong impressions
This is why using visual references from real life are so important!! Relying on guidelines can be helpful, especially for beginners, but it can also get echo-chambery and risks making you stagnant in your art (ie you start assuming there are no exceptions to the guidelines and accept them as rules). Looking at real pictures will always force you to see details you wouldnt have considered, such as the nose/lip/chin ratio as shown in the video. Great explanations all around!!! I definitely learned something from this :)
I'm so glad you brought this up! There's no such thing as a 'perfect face', and embracing the differences and unique qualities of these subjects is what makes the results so much more interesting and realistic. I definitely want to keep this method as a reference in the future! Also, thank you so much for making this channel. I've been following it for awhile now, and it's what inspired me to start an art RUclips of my own! Your art and advice are so real and good in a world where there's so many 'hacks' and cheap art tips. I actually learned how to draw better because of you, unlike so many other channels!
Thanks Sam for taking the time to fully expand on Ethan's video! It's very helpful not just to be able to draw different ethnicities, but also to be able to push the guidelines and make unique characters that also are recognizably from different backgrounds. This is very powerful advice!

This is so true. I ended up taking a picture of myself in that position, and guess what? My bottom lip goes over the line, but my top lip sits right over the line! To draw myself, I would need to merge the two methods! Unfortunately, the technique Ethan uses doesn't work for my face. Being Brazilian is about remembering that in our country, we are so mixed and that this is something that makes us unique! Just like all countries where miscegenation occurs frequently! Thank you, Sam, for touching on this important subject in such a didactic way.

As a rule, if I see a thumbnail be like "don't do this, do this" or "bad, ok", "no, yes" and such, I completely ignore it.
I draw like over 1000 people every year as a live caricature artist. Face shapes are all over the place and aren’t really tied to any race or ethnicity. There are so many exceptions I see to these guidelines. Have fun and play with facial shape possibilities!
In summary, for what Sam didn’t outright say: “do this not that” or “never do this” art tips SUCK. They are not the final ending to your art journey and they should never be treated that way.
We can keep going without the chicken scratches, though. Makes me feel like I forgot to grab my glasses, lol.
Honestly, these art tips are more like... this is how you draw in MY STYLE and MY STYLE is the only RIGHT STYLE. But also, the artists who do this tend to have same face syndrome. So I'm not impressed. 😂 Probably says a lot that the more experienced artists never post videos like that...
art tips don't suck. they're just meant to make art easier. they only start to suck when you take them as the fucking law. your fault, not the tip.
@@s0ls0l.mp3 You forget how impressionable young artists are. It's up to them to pick the tips they wanna follow, but content creators should be aware of the shit they're putting out too.
If you're gonna teach someone, don't screw them over FFS.
@@z_.5557 It wasn't bad advice. It was an art tip the whole goddamn art industry uses, including the masters, so get your shit right.
The only mistake you can make as a teacher in this circumstance is outright telling them you have to follow the art tip like a book.

Love this comment 😂❤
I LOVE WHEN ARTISTS ADDRESS "rules" that are really just tropes or usages of measurement to help an individuals process. Great usage of your guests' content.
It's great that instead of bullying and insulting the artist who caused the drama with her words Sam chose to make it into educational video. I saw people starting to insult her and calling her art ugly and boring and how it has anything to do? Is it really a right response to the situation? I doubt that, so it's great to see that people like Sam exist in the art community
People have all the right to get mad at her. Idk why y'all think poc are dumb and don't know how to react to shit like this.
@LOVE-510 I agree with you guys so much
@@xyzabc-nu3vd yeah i think so too
@LOVE-510 the targetted groups are not obligated to "educate" everyone. This is the year 2023, if one has the audacity to make remarks like that it's pretty straight forward- they are ignorant. They deserve the wrath coming their way
@LOVE-510 "exactly why I hate art community"
Oh I see, people raising their voice against social ills that affect them is what you hate to see huh🤐 lol
as an artist, art tips that said “do this” or “don’t do that” really held me back for a long time. finding amazing creators like sam is such a great thing that’s happened to me and my art and I appreciate it, love you sam
"stop drawing like this..."
The best art advice I've seen was "look at picture and reference picture". It applies not only to shapes but also to how light works
i love the fact that sam mainly draws lighter skinned people, but still takes the time to understand other ethnic features and ways to draw them
yeah, because of the drama. Everyone's heavily policing how artists should draw POC features now because if you get one thing wrong, you're automatically "racist" lmfao
@@MakoX623 🤦 your take is HORRENDOUS, imma explain why the recent drama exists rq:
Kooleen specifies she only draws "beautiful people", then she has never drawn POC, sharing art tips that aren't inclusive to face shapes, eye shapes, lip shapes etc.
its not just a race thing, its also abt what people consider beautiful being so unrealistic and flat.
@@MakoX623not rlly lol. Kooleen doesn’t draw features outside of Eurocentric and is constantly promoting only drawing “beautiful people”. Of course, you don’t have to draw black people, but people still need to understand that “different features ≠ ugly”. Unlike Kooleen, Sam does draw many characters with lighter skin, but he doesn’t actively promote only drawing “beautiful people”. I hope this made sense
@@kouignzz what you said is absolutely correct, but I would like to add the fact that Kooleen has stated many times that when she says “only draw beautiful people,” she isn’t referring to attractiveness but rather symmetrical features, as symmetry is easier for beginner artists. I think she made a mistake and didn’t mean to offend anyone, but it’s good to correct said mistake. People seem to ignore or not know this specific detail and I would like to provide it to better help people form an unbiased opinion on the matter :)
@@bluejae1396 ah i see. Thanks for the info :D
Basic lesson - Different people, different shapes. Nobody looks exactly the same. And sometimes, its an art style, sometimes its realistic. Just have fun when your drawing.
Tbh I'm kind of glad this drama happened, if it weren't for that we wouldn't have any tutorials like this coming out. It brought a lot of awareness to something the art community was lacking. I'm glad something positive came out of this! :)
Fr im glad it not only brought forward discussion about a pressing issue in the community, but also great advice to help artists create different characters and races.
Mmm...what is the "pressing issue"? I'm confused.
I love how you atleast addressed the wrong and not ignored it. Theres only three artists that I have subscribed too you, scott and jazza. Y'all very nice and give me happiness when I am at worse point of my life
a round of applause to sam for actually addressing the issue instead of getting into the drama
What drama? Like anytime a subject has a discussion why is it drama?
@@sweetie_buns because some people just shout their opinions and stuff get mixed up, when they could address the issue calmly to come at it directly and get a direct answer.
@@sketchy-chan the expressing there opinion are the people that are affected, their talking about the issue, this issue isn’t new it’s one of the smaller issues
@@sweetie_buns exactly, but i really don't understand why they have to shout about it, because it can all be resolved with an actual direct conversation
@@sweetie_buns The main drama is that the "wrong" rule was also referred/explicitly said and written as "gorilla looking mf" and that did NOT sit right with a lot of black people. Obvious reason bc that face type does exist, but also "gorilla looking" was used in derogatory ways to describe black people.
Love how you turned a controversy into an actually helpful tutorial on a difficult subject to draw. Kudos :)
I've always hated when people try to act like there's a right and wrong way to draw something. I much more prefer when people just show different ways to draw something without telling you you're drawing something wrong
People been wrongly taught race is only skin color. There's a lot more to it than that.
And that's why nowadays we have Banksy instead of Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci etc...

2:06 is the most hillarious bit on your channel yet. Just that genuine "he really REALLY inspired me" and the Ethan, all serious lmao
Love the distinction of “guides” not rules. Guides give you a way into a drawing but then you can compare with life or photo reference to see what is unique to your subject. And those unique parts are what really bring the drawing to life. Thanks, Sam!
Very straightforward no bs, art has no boundaries!

THE ART FATJER HAS POSTED YET ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO 🙏🏾🙏🏾
I love that sam ended up talking about it and educating us babys
About a year ago I couldn’t watch any of your content, but recently you‘be got so calm and informative, I’m hooked! Thank you
This video really helps me because the guidelines, as Sam said, are for beginners starting out, but the more you get experienced in drawing, the more you can start adding your own style and "breaking" the rules (guidelines) for how you see fit.
I was literally Thinking when kooleen fixed the black woman drawing that "the eye is in the wrong place" but she ended up fixing the whole structure
And the original artist did not like what was "fixed" too. They submitted the art bc they want _actual_ advice/criticism that Kooleen didn't even give.
No the eye was too far back, it should have been closer to the nose than to the ear, in that part it was correct but the chin wasn’t
@@Thatd3addoll
Why are you saying no? That’s exactly what OG said
Sam's videos do really help me get motivation to draw, i can always learn something new or just watch about things i already knew.
It's almost as if different races will have different physical apperances oOo
When will these "Artists" realize that not everyone is going to fit into the perfect "One size fits all" structure?
Even most artist knows this. It's mostly people who only know how to draw one way and try to apply that as a set rule when we all have different styles
Most of us know that. This is just what happens when you create tutorials when you’re also learning yourself
I mean, if artist wanna draw the stereotype people then let them. Want special? Commision them
I think a lot of people don't do enough life studies of the different shapes the human face can have. They stick to their box that is their style and don't branch out. Not saying that is wrong but it is wrong to tell others that your way is the right way, because that really gives beginners the wrong impressions
Ethan’s video actually blew my mind when I first saw it lol, you guys are def helping us baby artists improve!
I definitely learned something from this :)
you are a literal art god, sam. making drama into a learning experience got my complete respect.
Hes absolutely always right, you don't have to follow a certain rule in art you just draw, and make it creative.
Thanks Sam for taking the time to fully expand on Ethan's video! It's very helpful not just to be able to draw different ethnicities, but also to be able to push the guidelines and make unique characters that also are recognizably from different backgrounds. This is very powerful advice!
sam destroying kooleen and pinterest advice in one fell swoop and he didn't even have to participate in the drama. A King as always
Elite human being. Addresses the problem not the drama. We all need to be more like Sam
This isnt only a lesson for the babies, but a lesson for mediocre/professional artists too! Love that, and I hope Kool-aid sees this and learns too! No bad intentions behind my remark about her, just hope she improves, like we all should. Love all of your guys' content. Ethan, Kool-aid, and you have taught me a lot, thanks.
✍️😚
This is so true. I ended up taking a picture of myself in that position, and guess what? My bottom lip goes over the line, but my top lip sits right over the line! To draw myself, I would need to merge the two methods! Unfortunately, the technique Ethan uses doesn't work for my face.
Being Brazilian is about remembering that in our country, we are so mixed and that this is something that makes us unique! Just like all countries where miscegenation occurs frequently!
Thank you, Sam, for touching on this important subject in such a didactic way.
I always had a problem sketching side profiles but once I found out about this new method it helped soo much, thanks for always teaching us art babies sam ❤
Thank you! I’ve been having a hard time drawing lips on side profiles and this helps a lot with the general “rules” that can help me draw. You’re awesome!
I'm so glad to see guides for drawing non-white people. I do art as a hobby and I usually draw people closest to me, I've been struggling to find guides or tips to make drawing easier particularly black people because of my boyfriend and I'm always so happy to find some helpful way to draw him and other non-white people!!
highly recommend looking to black artists for more information and inspiration to draw from!
Indians, middle easterners and many others have similar facial features to ' white ' people. Are we white now, too? Only blacks being outraged again over some stupid stuff.
The curve is such a smart idea omg, that‘ll help me a ton, thanks :D
love how sam doesn't even need to draw just to inspire me !

Props to him for avoiding the drama, and making this a learning lesson for everyone. It’s not like you can’t address it, i just think it’s better to teach people to avoid these “rules” so they can avoid drama like this in the future
While the criticism was more towards her comment on the features being “gorilla like, I do agree that art tips like these are really helpful to people who struggle w/ drawing diverse characters

I am glad that he created this video, but also understand that some black people can fit under the line instead of the curve and that not all black characters need the curve to be defined as black.

I used to have a lot of opinions about how everything is in art because I had some accomplishments under my belt but those opinions were incomplete and they got in the way, adding fatigue to everything I tried to get done. I think martial arts have it right (but that's another option so I'm not setting it in stone) they learn a skill and then try to forget it so that it becomes second nature. As Bruce Lee put it "It's like a finger pointing at the moon. Don't focus on the finger or you'll miss all that heavenly glory!" In other words the artist has to get out of their own way. 🤔 Maybe I already said that here before but I can't remember. I'm old ❤
