one of my many problems with ai art is when people make character sheets with it. the point of a character sheet is so that you know what the design looks like. that doesn't work if they look different in every pic😐
It still amazes me people can sell those AI model sheets on DeviantArt and some of them actually get bought. The accounts indicate they're AI too cuz you're supposed to but still. I've seen a few that were cute but even my sad butt can draw them (makes me wonder where the OGs they stole from are.) This does make me kinda wanna redraw a few lol (I saved some of those pics more so for inspo purposes, didn't pay a penny, but some have a watermark which is hilarious and also the mistakes with the hands and feet are often amusing.) Edit: some people use the AI to generate a new character which they actually draw and sell but those aren't what I'm referring to, I mean the ones with three different angles/poses that are clearly the AI working hard to figure it out somehow.

But at that point they could also probably find someone to commission for a character sheet. It'll just cost more than the AI art does. but yeah like you said they could probably also use the AI tools themselves.
Some AI generators can remember character prompts. I have one for my OC, Artoria Pendragon in a bikini (or lingerie, or just an apron), and it can consistently make this character now.
My opinion of Ai art is honestly that this is genuinely how it’s supposed to be used. Toss some keywords in and get a general idea for what a character or a scene looks like. It’s suppose to be a tool that helps, not does all the work for you. In fact I think it could help a lot for artist that have Aphantasia (when your brain doesn't form or use mental images as part of your thinking or imagination)
Personally I've found it more counterproductive than anything. It sets me in an idea, and usually a pretty generic one at that...ans then I start finding it hard to deviate from just copying what the ai did but in my own style I prefer not using it at all
Honestly valid opinion. The way I use it is typing in some keywords, then seeing what pose it generates that I like and instead of using the generated character itself I insert an oc. I struggle a lot with poses and sometimes I can't find the desired ones/ones I like on Pinterest so yh @@user-vt5qg7hj1m

The only reason I used "integrity" is because even a dumb person can (usually) understand when something is immoral or inflicts self-harm. Then again, a good number of companies have been self-sabotaging themselves as of late for some reason; namely entertainment.
I think my biggest gripe with ai art is that tech bros and beginner level artists simply do not want to put in the work. Plain and simple; artists that ai scrape for style are just scraping. They don’t take into account the labor of love that learning art really is. Sure, some people have a knack or talent for art, but that can only get them so far before someone who studies and practices catches up or surpasses them. Ai art enthusiasts just want to skip all of the ugliness of beginning and get right to anime girls with pretty faces and complicated outfits. Which is a kick in teeth to people who spend their lives honing their craft into a work that a robot poorly imitates for the amusement of a human without care for the machines well being. exactly. some people don't understand the time, intention and effort that human artists put into their work and only care for what's on the surface. usually they either can't see the deeper meaning or they don't want to, and the same goes for putting in the effort to improve their work.
I will say though that you don't really see oil paintings of anime characters too often, so while it's okay in my opinion to tamper with just for occasional fun, by no means should it *EVER* serve as the primary support to one's creativity and ability. If you are in a creative rut and can't seem to find a solid reference to an idea you have and use AI to get a rough image to help you out, that's fine, sometimes it's okay to rely on things like this when you need too, but that should only be *IF* you need to. At best, AI art, in a serious setting, in my opinion, should only ever serve as a rough draft *FOR* a potential reference *TO* an idea and it's up to the creator to actually turn that idea into their own design, it's relevance to what a creator makes should be as low on the totem pole as possible. But I will admit that sometimes you can see an AI design and get an idea from it, sometimes when I'm browsing for character ideas for a story I take a decent look at a character, whether AI or not, and try to imagine how, based on their design, someone like "them" would affect and connect with other characters, and a decent amount of the time I actually find one that I think changes my own perspective on my own characters. For a quick example, I was writing a character backstory about an orphan (main character) and the orphanage's caretaker in a small countryside village for a campaign. It felt nice but it also felt like it was missing something to really connect the dots to the overall story. I didn't want to write the place like just the "main character's home", I wanted to be able to give it something that allows it to operate by itself. But the setting was too peaceful for many outside factors to affect this little village, and it was too small for any inside factors to provide anything truly significant to the story outside of being the "main character's home"; so I had to change something about the characters who lived there without tampering with the setting. I was wracking my head around and decided to just browse the internet to cool my head. But then I saw a pretty decent AI art of a servant girl, and out of curiosity I just decided to throw her in the mix to experiment a little, lo and behold some ideas started popping up, and the result ended up being a complete revamp of the origins of the caretaker herself and giving her more realistic and engaging motivations that affect her relationship with the orphan character and how it would impact them later into the story. This little countryside village now had its own significant influence (on at least the audience) without any help from the main character. But that's what I mean, it's okay to use AI art as a reference for an idea but that's what it should remain as at most. Ultimately it's up to your own effort and creativity to give what you create a life and a story. Painful as it may be to admit, the saying _"inspiration can come from anywhere"_ can include AI art in the modern setting. It can be a starting point to something great, but you have to draw a line so that as a creator you can walk on your own, as such it should *never* be a creator's foundation.

This! Art is a whole process, not just the result. What AI bros care about is just the "pretty" result that isn't even pretty at all. Art is one's self-expression, it's something where, you observe something and then translate it onto a canvas, it's something you can pull out of your imagination and make it real, make it exist. It's something you have 100% control over, and you can pick and choose which textures you want, what details you want, what colors you want, the line thickness, the style, the meaning, the emotion, the feeling, the atmosphere, the story, the pose/poses, the landscape, etc. It's such a lengthy and truly beautiful process, as you watch your imagination manifest in real life (albeit through a still picture and/or an animation). THAT is the beauty of art. And while the people who view your art may not know any of that process, even an outside person can tell how much effort and thought you put into your work, how passionate you are about it, and even see how lively it is. With AI, none of that applies, none of that exists, it's just a still image of something that has no author, no passion, no life, nothing. You can only really appreciate art if you understand it, if you understand the whole point of its existence. The AI enthusiasts seem to lack any understanding of art, therefore either claiming that it's also a form of art (which it isn't), or disregarding art and artists altogether It's so incredibly hard to explain to them how AI is harmful to the art community, and how it cannot be art, but they just won't listen... It's as if every explanation goes right over their head, no matter how detailed or simple that explanation is
I had a tech-douche fake a commission for me only before I sent the preview to send me some janky AI image creation [it's not art and I refuse to call it that. Art is Human Intent.] And they tried to act all mighty being like "If it isn't half as good as this, I might as well report you for false advertising. You might as well give me it for free at this point because you Lose." I told them that if they want to be shunned from other commission takers by posting their AI generation that they are beyond free to, but I refuse to sell to someone who uses AI to threaten artists out of their jobs through direct threats, let alone trying to get a 5$ sketch for free. It was so sad that they couldn't afford a 5$ sketch with discounted rendering that I just blocked them after to avoid their embarrassment.

I think it's amazing what we can do with AI but at the same time I don't think we should solely rely upon it.. What happens to the actual artists out there if everything is just AI? Nah, AI is fun to play around with, but I wouldn't want it to just be that.

I messed around with ai "art" before, and while some of the pictures it gave me inspired some new ideas, idea generation isn't really something I struggle with. In fact, I already have more ideas than I'll ever be able to actually do anything with. But after watching this video, I decided to try it again. I wanted the ai to generate a picture of a character I had come up with long ago, as a child in fact. A woman who was a Robin Hood-esque rebel with long red hair, green eyes, pale skin, dressed in green and brown medieval men's clothes and fighting with bow and arrow. The one thing the ai refused to do was to dress her in masculine clothes, no matter how I phrased it. It always gave her a dress. Plus it had no idea how a bow works, beyond it being a curved piece of wood with a string, so the string was either hanging down, only tied to one end of the bow, magically floating next to the bow, or just swinging through the air like a whip. And in one picture, she held the bow and arrow somewhat accurately, but the arrowhead pointed at her! Maybe it's just the free ai "art" generators being crap, but I'm not going to pay art thieves just to find out if the paid ai "art" is any better.

Its demand, including paid AI services, is deficient and available to everyone. It'll get better on a surface level, sure, but I heavily doubt it'll reach anything more than an inspiration-booster

I have serious trouble designing outfits for my characters and when i used AI i managed to get some ideas on what kind of outfit i wanted to make. Picking the best pieces of each drawing to make what i really wanted. I think AI can be a great tool for references or ideas generations, but no replacement for real artist.
This is the only way I can see those AI even being useful at all, nothing but an inspiration machine for rough concepts when you're completely out of ideas. They are horrible as references, and should never be used as such, but they can give you rough concept of composition and coloring.
Ngl I take from ai art with no remorse- like with a person I’d feel guilty and not do it but if it’s not real then you’ll catch me staring. Not like character designs but just the way they place things and I learn from the way it does rendering. Perhaps the poses too because it’s just fun to play around. I also get inspiration sometimes as well.
People who use ai art aill never know the true feeling of accomplishment with that type of art. They will not feel truly proud and will never know how good it feels to create your own.
@@voidmain7902 I don't know if you realize but it is done quite commonly. There are plenty of book resellers that sell you public domain works for profit. If you include adaptations (which copying AI work would fall under) then Disney is the king of claiming public works as their own. It happens to the point of Disney causing trouble to others wishing to adapt those works (like Snow White for example).

Also selling public domain works for profit doesn't mean they hold copyright on the works itself. Is this hard to understand? You can't claim public domain works, nor somebody elses' AI-generated stuff (which are not copyrightable for good reasons), as your own and sue them for infringement, period. You have no idea how copyright law works.
As an artist, I do this all the time. I've snagged so many AI made images from pinterest. It's great, easy practice to "fix" AI art and I don't have to worry about posting my version because, LOL, you can't copyright your AI art.
You know what? I count this as an intended use of AI art. Use it to visualize a concept, before refining it by hand with your own style, skill, and effort.

That essay line hit hard since in my college most of my class mates would use ai to fetch info for their report which annoyed me to hell and back since they already have the time and INFINITE VOID levels of information to digest in a way that is easier depending on people and if there is a go to sight. But then there's people that would just ctrl C the search results from an ai generator which gives me the most crap eating grin when i make a satifying report just through my research. Also fire art really has me wanna learn the fundamentals but I'm on a trip

I use Ai art for this specific purpose, to give me a different perspective as Ai tends to be over the top with accessories and clothing I myself wouldn't of thought of for the character I describe. But that's really it, i also use Chat gpt in a similar manor, brainstorm ideas (Usually this ends in me fighting with the bot over semantics) I do have an undiagnosed disorder that makes it hard to focus on ideas/ think of ideas on my own. I put a lot of work into the final pieces I make with the inspo and I still value actual artists and still try to learn with out it. But if I get stuck it's a nice tool to go back to, though I only use free versions for like a day then don't use the generators for like 2-3 months.
I’m an artist who seeks to improve my art, and to see that AI could in fact replace artists that work really hard on their art work is annoying, and I read the comments in this comment section and I agree with just all comments I saw so far. I’m just going to keep this short, but I agree with you when you say that AI art is not good when used for the wrong reason (like when you stated AI art is stealing from real artists).
People that use AI instead of buying or commission art used to take random pictures from google without paying or giving credit. Nobody stepped down from this, the non-industrial art industry is safe as heck.

Hot take: Anti-AI persons who "steal" from AI images also lack self awareness because they indirectly "scrapes" and "steals" from all the artists they thought that were on their side, no matter how they want to claim how much more morally superior they are. Not that there's really anything wrong with "scraping" and AI alone though. This kind of thought that "stealing from AI is morally right" also directly proves it. Of course grifters of any form should be laughed at but from what I see quite a lot of people are just posting because they found a new toy, and sadly those ended up gets treated by the mobs the same way as the grifters (or be fed those "AI is theft" nonsense without any context whatsoever) and I don't like it.
This! Luckily for my designs that were inspired in this kind of way, I actually found account that has ai generated stuff, but tells it's ai and free to use. I absolutely despise people who wanna write "do not steal, do not repost" stuff in their pics. I've even seen ai "art" with watermarks. I remember on occasion using ai to generate an image of an idea i couldn’t visualize properly, which is where its use shines through the most for me. I have so many ideas and so many of them fall dead because i just cant put it on paper. Now me and my friends just generate outfit ideas with chat gpt whenever i cant come up with a proper idea for character designs, i find the descriptions better than the janky outfits that made no sense when trying to make something cohesive
I always use AI pictures as bases for drawing stuff just to make posing, cloth folds among various things easier. It's just fun to use, especially when it's warped a lot like for drawing humanoid monsters like zombies.
I’ve noticed a disturbing trend of AI generated images actually starting to stunt the new generation of artists. They see themselves as being raised for a future that will not be their own.
ahhh I remember seeing some of those on pinterest too. the problem is that once I saved a few ai pieces all my recommended pins turned into ai and now I can't even find a background reference that isn't actually ai when I look up close. also I thought the last person was a lady/non-binary from the ai images it's interesting how even with the same inspiration artists can come out with different designs and conclusion
I'll be honest, as an artist myself I think "replacing artists is bad" isn't _really_ a valid argument, on a surface level. Replacing all art with AI-made art _is_ a problem in my opinion, because AI art has no intention or meaning, and only looks visually pleasing on a surface level as well. Parts of that could be improved with further development, but if you've ever zoomed in on the details of any AI art you know how confusing and unstructured it is. So in my opinion AI art isn't bad because human artists spend so much time developing their skills and it's unfair to develop a machine that does the same thing (although I fully understand why many artists feel personally upset about that, even if it's not really an objectively useful argument), but instead because AI is genuinely just... bad at making meaningful and comprehensible art, and it'd be very sad to see that take over the majority of the human pursuit of art. And there is of course the whole moral issue with training AI with real artists' work without permission, which also makes me dislike its more widespread usage. Sorry about the absolute text wall, I have some thoughts about this topic, so TL;DR: In my opinion the worst part about AI art is that it's meaningless and obviously carelessly made, which anyone who looks at it for more than a few second can see. It's sad to see this get so popular, because those people who genuinely love AI art obviously barely even look at said "art".

I think you are making great points, the premise of the video is funny and your art is really good! Unfortunately, as a person working in the AI field, I think I can safely say that big tech will find a way to train these image generators without relying on "art theft" if they have to anyways. They might pay artists to create specialized training databases, they might also get good results using only user judgements of generated images. Another thing is that they probably have a massive amount of AI user generated images by now, and that is probably all that is necessary to train new generations of image generators. I am not sure if in this case it can still be considered stealing from artists, on one hand the images were generated using AI that itself used protected material, but on the other hand the generated images are not themselves protected, as you noted. And so this means that artists will still be threatened by these AIs in the future, even if they win on the copyright front.
Yay a true artist that gets it! I like doing the same thing with AI art! I'm a self taught artist who learned on my own for several years, and I often study human or self made (i.e. posing dolls or self modelling) refs to get even better, but one problem I often have is getting the detailed and often complicated ideas and vibes I have in mind for my character, and getting them ONTO paper! AI made this much less stressful! The advantage of them not being copyrighted, the fact that I usually take a minimum of 6 photos I really liked based on my prompt, and the fact that I still draw my own characters with their own final design, color palette and structure, means that by the end of it, it's so far detached from anything I've ever seen, and so much like what I envisioned, that I'm happier after! Sure, I hear the Anti-AI folks, "what did you do before AI, huuuhhh?". I googled. I googled for 7+ hours, had a mental breakdown, and then enlisted my friend who works as a backend dev for Google, to help. Yeah. Sure, my designs before AI are still on par with my ones now, I just don't stress as hard not finding references that resemble the fuzzy image in my mind's eye. I can MAKE things that look like that fuzzy image in my mind's eye!! "But AI just makes composites of other people's art" yeah and? I'm not passing AI as my own art, I DRAW MY OWN SHIT, and how is that a bad thing in my case? If one image is a composite of say, 10 images, and I reference 6 AI images I really like outfit elements of, then at the end of the day, I'm referencing 60 photos am I not? Seems like a handy way to cut down googling for references for an eternity and just get what I truly want. Heck, it's not even the only way I do things anymore! Nowadays I can feed avatar dolls I make on a petsite as refs into an AI and get FURTHER personalized images to what I want! TL:DR best use of AI art and finally a fellow artist with nuance Edit: also I'm not rigidly pro AI either. AI bros piss me off because they have NO spacial awareness of what it's to be used for! Like, wtaf how can you be so tone deaf to think this replaces humans? The images I generate, for instance, have no sense of personality, depth, or 'character' to be seen. While this flaw works to my benefit (I pretty much only steal their clothes >:3), it's baffling to me how these guys see designs so vapid and think "yeah this is better than humans" like bruh 😂. Until I inject the human elements into whatever AI sections I referenced (Clothes, maybe a hairstyle, usually clothes tho) such as color palette, pose, the characters actual personality showing through their facial expression, the fact that I CAN DRAW HANDS, suddenly it's far more human than the AI images I may have tore bits from. The fact that it takes a human to make them good should make their purpose obvious
Another thing Ai Image generators *can* help with, are for people who *physically* can’t do art like people with disabilities or old age or really anyone who can’t experience the joy of creating for whatever reason +the things you mentioned, are really the only positives humanity could take from this.
This is still a partially invalid argument. I've seen plenty of disabled people who pursued art despite their disabilities. People who had 4 of their limbs completely gone and using their MOUTH to draw. In my opinion, The creativity and inspiration to draw comes to those who pursues it constantly. AI generators are never ethical due to the reason that it's database is comprised of stolen art.

Process of making art is fun! No matter how pain it is! But still worth it! Like a quote from John Wick 3 movie "Art is pain, life is suffering". Well, it depends on how you interpret it. Overall, 'AI art don't have that soul...all i see its like too perfection! Too complete. We artist do make some mistakes and there's a time we leave our art not to complete because it looks beautiful already. Its how we tell and convey our story & feelings in art. Nowadays, quantity than quality and I'm tired of it. We're not a machine, we breathe and we learn. Mistakes? Everyone makes mistakes, get back up, do it again. Life is an art too. Anyway, fuck the 'AI' art!
One question that's interesting to ask in this discussion is how do people get the inspiration for new designs and art pieces in the first place? Isn't that also just taking in their surroundings, life experiences and looking at other people's art? All of which they didn't have to put any effort into? Ai may look at a higher volume of art, but it's still the same process, it's just more basic because it only draws from 1 source (the internet) whereas people draw inspiration from many places whether that's conscious or subconscious. Should artists not be allowed to draw anything if it takes inspiration from other art? Is it the process of making the art itself the important part? If so, are you really creating it yourself? When i draw a picture on paper, I'm moving a pencil (a tool) to create an impression on the paper and form an image. When i use ai to create an image, i also use a tool (keyboard) to input information into an algorithm creates an image, taking inspiration from other artworks. Why does the type of tool and the time taken to produce the image matter? We can say that it's the fact that it's drawing inspiration from other artists without their permission that's the issue, but again, doesn't every other artist already do this - whether it's conscious or not? Another question to ask is what is art? It seems like such a vague concept. Would coding be considered artistic expression in the same way writing is as long as one puts "effort" and "soul" into it? In that case isn't the algorithm itself a type of art? If art requires intended meaning, then how can we prove the creators were lacking in it? And what about people who commission art? Did they intend any meaning being the art? Is it now not considered art because they didn't create it to express anything, but rather because they're being paid to draw specific lines and fill them in with specific colours? Don't misunderstand, I'm not arguing for or against ai art being morally good or bad, I'm just asking questions that i think are interesting around the issue. I don't really have an opinion on the matter overall. But it would be interesting to hear replies to these questions from the perspectives of artists
I think the main difference is that when a human wants to copy something they always end up making mistakes or adding their own touch or something, but an ai can just pull up the original image So if a human makes something they always end up adding something new But if an ai makes something it can't really do that

8:22 . I'm actually writing my argumentative essay about AI art. Of course, not using AI to write it, just thought it was a little funny. And about the topic of AI copying art works, I am wanting to go to art college and pursue art as a career. My classes are set up around that idea in mind and I haven't seen any work that is similar to my art style. My art style which includes brightest colors known to man kind, sharp lines, and generally not an anime style or anything similar.

The big problem with all this AI war is, that i dont see what the goal of it is. I'm a software developer, i dont have much to do with AI especially "art ai" yet. But also in my field, software developement, AI is becomeing better and better at doing what right now is still my job. Yet i think pushing againt it would not help me, like every techonology, once its here, it stays. Until it gets replaced by something better. So what i do in my field and what i would suggest to artists, is to explore the possibilities that these technologies provide and see if it can improve your work. If Ai can generate something decent, then what could an ai do in the hands of a very skillfull artist. Thats how i see it. And maybe you have concerns in terms of moral issues, i understand that, in that case maybe only explore it for yourself and dont make profit out of it. But the legal and moral siede, is only a issue as long as its unclear what training data has been used. But im pretty sure there will be a point where an ai model will be createt that solely consists of images from consenting artists.
I'll be honest...this entire video to me is the perfect of example of the place AI art may have in the future. Reference and inspiration. A tool in a kit, but not the final product, nor a replacement for the skill needed to make said product. It may also be used similarly to how a picture is taken and then heavily edited in photoshop to get a final product. Regardless, AI produces a 'base' that needs alteration and work from skilled individuals, it does not produce 'art' Generally speaking, I strongly disagree with AI models using material that is not within the public domain, however. Models should only be built off the public domain.
No, her art is really ugly compared to the AI. AI is way more detailed, hers is too simple and an ugly mix of anime and western style. It doesn't work. Why can't Americans draw anime?
I refuse to call it "AI art". I call them "AI images", because they have absolutely nothing to do with actual art in my poinion, and are just computer generated images.
I regularly use AI art for a reference. I’m working on a drawing right now actually. I would never make AI art and post it and say “ta-da! I did this!” But it helps me get ideas just like taking pictures of my favorite manga does

Honestly if you can use AI to craft the framework of an essay and then polish it to make it make sense, you've just used a tool. If you continue to have access to that tool, you could even use it in your professional life. Note the caveats -- when will you not have access to this tool? Does practicing drafting essays from scratch help you learn how to structure arguments, so that you can make yourself verbally understood on the spot? When you're not being graded or playing sports, results are mainly what matters. This does NOT mean it's okay to hurt people or rip them off, I just mean if a language predictor helps you write some of the broad strokes of an essay first to save time, it ultimately doesn't matter. You _are_ cheating yourself out of developing a skill if you rely *exclusively* on using that tool. It's not super fun to make it into adulthood and realize you lack a solid grasp on certain forms of self-expression, but there's no requirement that you must be all-or-nothing on using any given tool of any kind. Just because you've microwaved pizza rolls before doesn't mean it's now impossible to cook them in the oven, or vice versa.
Anyone who thinks art is impossible to reach without pain and efforts or is useless, needs to see how prehistoric humans did art… like lots of it. The cave ones are especially pertinent since they were in dim lamp light and they look that great… If prehistory people who fend for their lives as hunters and gatherers can do it in dim light conditions on a wall with no prievious help from artists already existing you can too.
🧶 The braid guy would be cool as an antagonist shapeshifting dragon with power over shadows or something. I suspect his AI art references came from photos of Ouji style garments so try looking up that term if you want more inspo for him (I was doing references on pumpkin shorts a few months ago and stumbled onto this.) The deer boy is the little brother of a friend that crow girl makes along the way. He's IMHO a bit like Mordecai from Lackadaisy Cats lol just less intense and more goofy. Crow girl might be a magical girl; could be an angel but I prefer the idea she's a genius with bird traits. Maybe she's actually a harpy? I like to think they share a hobby and he's mad inspired by her, looks up to her and asks her for advice, which is why they hang out even though he's very introverted normally (also he feels out of place with other kids in his age group ofc.) He's super serious but young while she's very knowledgeable and focused on her goals but a bit ditzy and just as easily flustered as deer boy. They get along great! Except for when they fight lol. Could also be interesting if it turns out deer boy has a heel face turn but could also be nifty if crow girl has a heel face turn instead. However, she feels like she'd be a MC before he would so idk. Her design was probably garbled together from Rin Tohsaka of Fate Stay Night (I suspect one of her head wings is based on Rin's hair bows) so you could get inspo from there too. Also, what if for deer boy you only had the brown as a warm color while everything else is cool? Could be interesting but you may have tried that already. Anyway those are just my random thoughts!
I haven't even watched the video but just based on the premise of it; I think there's a big thing you're missing... The POINT. AI art is based off of stealing thousands of artworks from other artists, and compiling them into the generated end result, so how is it okay to steal from AI art, when it's already stealing from artists by itself?
literally. drawing ai images is like taking part in a dtiys where the host traces and steals all their ideas. not only that, you’re subconsciously teaching yourself methods of drawing based off ai. i shouldn’t have to explain the problem with that.
@cryingwatercolours8127 If it's a bunch of images smashed together to make a piece, why is it okay for people to do that (without AI) You're using the character reference as a INSPIRATION not tracing over it.
Using AI to create very specific and tailored references for character design is a big help. but don't immediately take that and post it online. Go over the refference and itterate on it in your own artistic way. It no longer becomes an issue especially if handled properly.
My personal favorite of these would have to be the second one, both because anything even remotely headed in a mechanical fantasy direction is right up my alley and because of how well your take on the gold patterns on his coat turned out. In the AI image, those just looked like a mess of extra detail while you managed to make those details work and stand out in a way I don't understand for a lack of artistic expertise, but is just really nice to look at regardless. Also, for the third character, the AI seems to have attempted giving him something small and dangly on a string to hold in its second image. Pair that with your increased focus on his relation to candles and I'd say his powers could well be a hypnotizing control over those small flames, used subtly. Basically don't get in a 1 on 1 conversation with this guy, especially not near candlelight, or you will find yourself ending up with a deal that very much favors him. A combination of a charismatic businessman and the whole deal with the devil trope - works with his horns as well.
Ai arts main bad part is that it has no meaning or intention. You see digital art pieces and they have perspective and emphasis while ai just copies what it sees because it doesnt understand human emotion
I feel like people who are trying to replace artists with AI just don't care about making something unique. I don't mind AI, or artists using AI as part of their working process (In fact, I use AI myself as part of my process when need be,) my issue is with people who post AI images and either post the raw, unedited image, or straight up try to pass it off as their own work, if someone goes in and fixes up the AI artifacts, or even better, put their own spin on it, at least there was effort put into that, I can respect that. The best use of AI in my opinion is to fill in gaps in your ability while you learn to improve in that specific thing you struggle with, I struggle with outfit design, so I get a bunch of AI images of the style I am going for, and mix and match different aspects to get as close to what my idea was as possible. Another great use of AI is for placeholders in your work, I have no experience with music creation, I can't make good music even if my life depended on it, AI music generators are great for placeholder music to get the feeling across (in my case that would be a game prototype.) keyword: Placeholder. the final product would obviously benefit greatly from a professionally composed soundtrack that fits the specific product, but for a prototype, AI generated placeholders of anything work fine, no one is about to spend hundreds or even thousands potentially on a prototype of something when you can't guarantee it going any further.
Artists should band together and post terrible art to mess up the generators which feed from their content. Also, copy them! You get free character designs, and they get to get angry over the fact that you're stealing their stolen content.
Oh no, an artist drew my OC for free, how terrible! The terrible art isn't going to get picked, there's always some curation of the training data, and there's so much data out there that you'd need people to draw crap on purpose for years for it to work.

In my humble opinion, I think ai has a couple uses in the art world, just not regular PICTURE art (I can definitely see why artists have a bone to pick with AI art there), but in animation, you see, even if you hire the BEST animators in the world, it will still take forever to make a single episode of an anime or series, so what I think the animators do is instead of drawing like 60 frames per second, they instead draw like 10 or 15 and the AI handles everything in between and the animators just clean up the inconsistencies that come with the AI, I think AI art is great at what it does, but I think it's EVEN BETTER if there is human moderation as well, thank you for coming to my ted talk.
One time ago at school we needed use only AI to make designs. Spoiler alert: I faked drawings to look like AI, because AI didn't give results what I needed.

My opinion is that real hand-drawn art makes my brain tingle and my eyes glow but ai “art” makes me feel uncomfortable and everytime I look at it, it feels unsettling
For people who want to use AI art like this, you should have some caution: if it's your own output then of course you're safe, but only raw AI output can't be copyrighted. If the original artist added to or adjusted their output before posting it, they own the copyright to that art. Using AI art as reference, edit, and trace material is a really powerful art flow tool, though. Just be sure that if that's how you choose to use AI it's either your own output or you can confirm it's unedited. Though, of course, asking permission is probably your best strategy. There's no laws requiring it, but most AI artists are also involved in the non-AI art community, and we know how dramatic and over the top and unreasonable artists get about perceived 'art theft'.
Honestly, I think that an actually good use for AI would be in politics... Many people are afraid of "being dominated by AI overlords" or something... but honestly, the fact AI can analyze simultaneously tons of parallel factors, elements, possibilities and how they interact with each other means it could probably come up with ideas capable of bringing us to a utopia way better than any human politician could. As longs as it only gives the ideas, and we humans are still the ones still taking the final decision and making it happen, I suppose that would be a huge step up for the world.
As someone who uses ai to generate images, I always find it funny when people think that this is gonna replace humans, it’s gonna allow artist to generate a bunch of cool shit but if you don’t have an artist at the wheel it will always end up being super generic
AI art should only ever be a tool, like I create a photo and then draw it by hand myself from the photo. I can’t stand it when you see people selling ai stuff like they’ve done it themselves. It’s a good base for people wanting a certain pose for a person or a face that doesn’t exist in rl. But ai art is being sold as proper art and it hurts my heart.
Great video... I'd like to note that I think calling it 'art' is generous I know a lot of people use air quotes but I think a better term is AI generated images. (even though the term AI by itself is wrong anyway :/) Art suggests a creative PROCESS and that's what the AI stuff completely lacks.
I use AI to kinda skip my collage and pure ref steps in the character design process. It can spit out all of that info very quickly. So yes, definitely good to use as a reference tool. But do remember to use real photos for the anatomy and proportions!
My guess is that the point of what people say AI will replace every isn't what is currently being produced today, but rather the higher quality ones you can't tell. I want to say that I agree that AI isn't going to take over the art industry, after all, a really good artist capable of drawing real life scenes would've given up the moment cameras came out, it's about what is produced as much as it is the stuff behind what produced it. The story of a original character piece, the art style of an artist, the artist themselves, and plenty of other things. So then imagine an AI that didn't make the obvious makes with the hands, proportions in certain areas, or mistakes in logic. It's when you can't tell that the picture is created from a machine stealing from a database of other artists hard work that it gets scary because it provides an alternative that if someone can't tell is illegal, isn't. After all, 'it ain't cheating if you don't get caught'. So when someone takes a keyboard are produces an artist in 30 seconds that would take someone else hours to create, and no one even knows it well, I've already said what I said.
Another thing about AI art is that the AI is completely incompetent when it comes to drawing anything that isn’t a standard pretty anime character. Some time I’d like to find one of those “insert a drawing and get an AI rendition of it” websites just to watch it struggle to draw me little Pokémon-esque creatures I like to design.
I really thought about doing this ("stealing AI art and interpret it new") for some time now. XD Glad you did it, nice drawings. While watching the video something popped off in my head: What if start showing people the positive things about creating and what you as a human being get out of it (growth, experience, becoming steady, decluttering your mind...) so people get more interested in starting drawing than using AI... sorry I cannot really describe the thoughts that popped up. I just thought about PewDiPie and his 100 days art journey and what he GAINED by learning to draw. AI art might be interesting for the moment, but in the long run, people will get fed of it and will realize it's not gonna give them much somehow and start to explore again what it means to do things with your own hands again... at least I hope.
The problem with AI art is that theres so much of it now that AI's are unknowingly training off of it. therefore reinforcing the same problems. That's an unsolvable problem, and why the AI guzzlers cooked themselves before they could make AI artists good.

I just would disagree with the purpuse and usefulness of art thing. art _can_ be uselful and _can_ have a purpuse, but it doesn't have to, and it doesn't make it more or less of anything. people are obsessed with utility and purpuse, and honestly, that only hurt creative activities like drawing. do what you want because you want to, there's no need to justify the purpuse or utility of it... but nah, that's probably just me
well for me, I see AI art as a tool I could use to improve myself and like old artist in the back of the day they use every tool they have to improve themselves. Because sometimes we all have some art block, can’t think what to draw so at least this can basically remove that art block from us and we can still practice for our drawing.
the ai character design stuff rly bothers me bc I've been doing commissions and now my customers will sometimes send me ai images as character references and I always have to explain that I can't really do the design 1 for 1 because the ai drawings are absolute nonsense. Every single time its like a belt that connects to nothing, chains that evolve into nonsensical blobs, fabric that follows no logic, lines that go nowhere. It's awful.

one of my many problems with ai art is when people make character sheets with it. the point of a character sheet is so that you know what the design looks like. that doesn't work if they look different in every pic😐
honestly same - the AI character sheets typically have so many inconsistencies between them and at that point it's pretty obvious that it's AI
It still amazes me people can sell those AI model sheets on DeviantArt and some of them actually get bought. The accounts indicate they're AI too cuz you're supposed to but still. I've seen a few that were cute but even my sad butt can draw them (makes me wonder where the OGs they stole from are.) This does make me kinda wanna redraw a few lol (I saved some of those pics more so for inspo purposes, didn't pay a penny, but some have a watermark which is hilarious and also the mistakes with the hands and feet are often amusing.) Edit: some people use the AI to generate a new character which they actually draw and sell but those aren't what I'm referring to, I mean the ones with three different angles/poses that are clearly the AI working hard to figure it out somehow.

But at that point they could also probably find someone to commission for a character sheet. I have one for my OC, Artoria Pendragon in a bikini (or lingerie, or just an apron), and it can consistently make this character now.
My opinion of Ai art is honestly that this is genuinely how it’s supposed to be used.
Toss some keywords in and get a general idea for what a character or a scene looks like.

The only reason I used "integrity" is because even a dumb person can (usually) understand when something is immoral or inflicts self-harm. Then again, a good number of companies have been self-sabotaging themselves as of late for some reason; namely entertainment.
I think my biggest gripe with ai art is that tech bros and beginner level artists simply do not want to put in the work. Plain and simple; artists that ai scrape for style are just scraping. They don’t take into account the labor of love that learning art really is. Sure, some people have a knack or talent for art, but that can only get them so far before someone who studies and practices catches up or surpasses them. Ai art enthusiasts just want to skip all of the ugliness of beginning and get right to anime girls with pretty faces and complicated outfits.
Which is a kick in teeth to people who spend their lives honing their craft into a work that a robot poorly imitates for the amusement of a human without care for the machines well being.

some people don't understand the time, intention and effort that human artists put into their work and only care for what's on the surface. usually they either can't see the deeper meaning or they don't want to, and the same goes for putting in the effort to improve their work.
I will say though that you don't really see oil paintings of anime characters too often, so while it's okay in my opinion to tamper with just for occasional fun, by no means should it *EVER* serve as the primary support to one's creativity and ability. If you are in a creative rut and can't seem to find a solid reference to an idea you have and use AI to get a rough image to help you out, that's fine, sometimes it's okay to rely on things like this when you need too, but that should only be *IF* you need to.
At best, AI art, in a serious setting, in my opinion, should only ever serve as a rough draft *FOR* a potential reference *TO* an idea and it's up to the creator to actually turn that idea into their own design, it's relevance to what a creator makes should be as low on the totem pole as possible. But I will admit that sometimes you can see an AI design and get an idea from it, sometimes when I'm browsing for character ideas for a story I take a decent look at a character, whether AI or not, and try to imagine how, based on their design, someone like "them" would affect and connect with other characters, and a decent amount of the time I actually find one that I think changes my own perspective on my own characters.
For a quick example, I was writing a character backstory about an orphan (main character) and the orphanage's caretaker in a small countryside village for a campaign. It felt nice but it also felt like it was missing something to really connect the dots to the overall story. I didn't want to write the place like just the "main character's home", I wanted to be able to give it something that allows it to operate by itself. But the setting was too peaceful for many outside factors to affect this little village, and it was too small for any inside factors to provide anything truly significant to the story outside of being the "main character's home"; so I had to change something about the characters who lived there without tampering with the setting. I was wracking my head around and decided to just browse the internet to cool my head. But then I saw a pretty decent AI art of a servant girl, and out of curiosity I just decided to throw her in the mix to experiment a little, lo and behold some ideas started popping up, and the result ended up being a complete revamp of the origins of the caretaker herself and giving her more realistic and engaging motivations that affect her relationship with the orphan character and how it would impact them later into the story. This little countryside village now had its own significant influence (on at least the audience) without any help from the main character.
But that's what I mean, it's okay to use AI art as a reference for an idea but that's what it should remain as at most. Ultimately it's up to your own effort and creativity to give what you create a life and a story. Painful as it may be to admit, the saying _"inspiration can come from anywhere"_ can include AI art in the modern setting. It can be a starting point to something great, but you have to draw a line so that as a creator you can walk on your own, as such it should *never* be a creator's foundation.

Here’s my fave chocolate chip cookie recipe!
▢ 1 cup salted butter softened
▢ 1 cup granulated sugar
▢ 1 cup light brown sugar packed
▢ 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
▢ 2 large eggs
▢ 3 cups all-purpose flour
▢ 1 teaspoon baking soda
▢ ½ teaspoon baking powder
▢ 1 teaspoon sea salt
▢ 2 cups chocolate chips (14 oz)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line three baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.
In a medium bowl mix flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
Cream together butter and sugars until combined.
Beat in eggs and vanilla until light (about 1 minute).
Mix in the dry ingredients until combined.
Add chocolate chips and mix well.
Roll 2-3 Tablespoons (depending on how large you like your cookies) of dough at a time into balls and place them evenly spaced on your prepared cookie sheets.
Bake in preheated oven for approximately 8-10 minutes. Take them out when they are just barely starting to turn brown.
Let them sit on the baking pan for 2 minutes before removing to cooling rack.
These are so good and adding half semi sweet half milk chocolate chips is perfect. Easy to make and always a crowd pleaser, because lord knows you make a crowd very displeased

Art is a whole process, not just the result. What AI bros care about is just the "pretty" result that isn't even pretty at all. Art is one's self-expression, it's something where, you observe something and then translate it onto a canvas, it's something you can pull out of your imagination and make it real, make it exist. It's something you have 100% control over, and you can pick and choose which textures you want, what details you want, what colors you want, the line thickness, the style, the meaning, the emotion, the feeling, the atmosphere, the story, the pose/poses, the landscape, etc.
It's such a lengthy and truly beautiful process, as you watch your imagination manifest in real life (albeit through a still picture and/or an animation). THAT is the beauty of art. And while the people who view your art may not know any of that process, even an outside person can tell how much effort and thought you put into your work, how passionate you are about it, and even see how lively it is. With AI, none of that applies, none of that exists, it's just a still image of something that has no author, no passion, no life, nothing. You can only really appreciate art if you understand it, if you understand the whole point of its existence. The AI enthusiasts seem to lack any understanding of art, therefore either claiming that it's also a form of art (which it isn't), or disregarding art and artists altogether
It's so incredibly hard to explain to them how AI is harmful to the art community, and how it cannot be art, but they just won't listen... It's as if every explanation goes right over their head, no matter how detailed or simple that explanation is

I messed around with ai "art" before, and while some of the pictures it gave me inspired some new ideas, idea generation isn't really something I struggle with. In fact, I already have more ideas than I'll ever be able to actually do anything with. But after watching this video, I decided to try it again. I wanted the ai to generate a picture of a character I had come up with long ago, as a child in fact. A woman who was a Robin Hood-esque rebel with long red hair, green eyes, pale skin, dressed in green and brown medieval men's clothes and fighting with bow and arrow. The one thing the ai refused to do was to dress her in masculine clothes, no matter how I phrased it. It always gave her a dress. Plus it had no idea how a bow works, beyond it being a curved piece of wood with a string, so the string was either hanging down, only tied to one end of the bow, magically floating next to the bow, or just swinging through the air like a whip. And in one picture, she held the bow and arrow somewhat accurately, but the arrowhead pointed at her! Maybe it's just the free ai "art" generators being crap, but I'm not going to pay art thieves just to find out if the paid ai "art" is any better.
You must've used some shitty AI. You can do a lot more for free, especially if you have the hardware

I have serious trouble designing outfits for my characters and when i used AI i managed to get some ideas on what kind of outfit i wanted to make. Picking the best pieces of each drawing to make what i really wanted. I think AI can be a great tool for references or ideas generations, but no replacement for real artist.
This is the only way I can see those AI even being useful at all, nothing but an inspiration machine for rough concepts when you're completely out of ideas. They are horrible as references, and should never be used as such, but they can give you rough concept of composition and coloring.

If you include adaptations (which copying AI work would fall under) then Disney is the king of claiming public works as their own. It happens to the point of Disney causing trouble to others wishing to adapt those works (like Snow White for example).

As an artist, I do this all the time. I've snagged so many AI made images from pinterest. It's great, easy practice to "fix" AI art and I don't have to worry about posting my version because, LOL, you can't copyright your AI art.
You know what? I count this as an intended use of AI art. Use it to visualize a concept, before refining it by hand with your own style, skill, and effort.

That essay line hit hard since in my college most of my class mates would use ai to fetch info for their report which annoyed me to hell and back since they already have the time and INFINITE VOID levels of information to digest in a way that is easier depending on people and if there is a go to sight. But then there's people that would just ctrl C the search results from an ai generator which gives me the most crap eating grin when i make a satifying report just through my research. I use Ai art for this specific purpose, to give me a different perspective as Ai tends to be over the top with accessories and clothing I myself wouldn't of thought of for the character I describe. But that's really it, i also use Chat gpt in a similar manor, brainstorm ideas (Usually this ends in me fighting with the bot over semantics)
I do have an undiagnosed disorder that makes it hard to focus on ideas/ think of ideas on my own. I put a lot of work into the final pieces I make with the inspo and I still value actual artists and still try to learn with out it. But if I get stuck it's a nice tool to go back to, though I only use free versions for like a day then don't use the generators for like 2-3 months.
I’m an artist who seeks to improve my art, and to see that AI could in fact replace artists that work really hard on their art work is annoying, and I read the comments in this comment section and I agree with just all comments I saw so far. I’m just going to keep this short, but I agree with you when you say that AI art is not good when used for the wrong reason (like when you stated AI art is stealing from real artists).
People that use AI instead of buying or commission art used to take random pictures from google without paying or giving credit.

Hot take: Anti-AI persons who "steal" from AI images also lack self awareness because they indirectly "scrapes" and "steals" from all the artists they thought that were on their side, no matter how they want to claim how much more morally superior they are. Not that there's really anything wrong with "scraping" and AI alone though. This kind of thought that "stealing from AI is morally right" also directly proves it.
Of course grifters of any form should be laughed at but from what I see quite a lot of people are just posting because they found a new toy, and sadly those ended up gets treated by the mobs the same way as the grifters (or be fed those "AI is theft" nonsense without any context whatsoever) and I don't like it.

I remember on occasion using ai to generate an image of an idea i couldn’t visualize properly, which is where its use shines through the most for me. I have so many ideas and so many of them fall dead because i just cant put it on paper.
Now me and my friends just generate outfit ideas with chat gpt whenever i cant come up with a proper idea for character designs, i find the descriptions better than the janky outfits that made no sense when trying to make something cohesive

ahhh I remember seeing some of those on pinterest too. the problem is that once I saved a few ai pieces all my recommended pins turned into ai and now I can't even find a background reference that isn't actually ai when I look up close. also I thought the last person was a lady/non-binary from the ai images it's interesting how even with the same inspiration artists can come out with different designs and conclusion
I'll be honest, as an artist myself I think "replacing artists is bad" isn't _really_ a valid argument, on a surface level. Replacing all art with AI-made art _is_ a problem in my opinion, because AI art has no intention or meaning, and only looks visually pleasing on a surface level as well. Parts of that could be improved with further development, but if you've ever zoomed in on the details of any AI art you know how confusing and unstructured it is. So in my opinion AI art isn't bad because human artists spend so much time developing their skills and it's unfair to develop a machine that does the same thing (although I fully understand why many artists feel personally upset about that, even if it's not really an objectively useful argument), but instead because AI is genuinely just... bad at making meaningful and comprehensible art, and it'd be very sad to see that take over the majority of the human pursuit of art. And there is of course the whole moral issue with training AI with real artists' work without permission, which also makes me dislike its more widespread usage.
Sorry about the absolute text wall, I have some thoughts about this topic, so TL;DR: In my opinion the worst part about AI art is that it's meaningless and obviously carelessly made, which anyone who looks at it for more than a few second can see. It's sad to see this get so popular, because those people who genuinely love AI art obviously barely even look at said "art".

I think you are making great points, the premise of the video is funny and your art is really good! Unfortunately, as a person working in the AI field, I think I can safely say that big tech will find a way to train these image generators without relying on "art theft" if they have to anyways. They might pay artists to create specialized training databases, they might also get good results using only user judgements of generated images. Another thing is that they probably have a massive amount of AI user generated images by now, and that is probably all that is necessary to train new generations of image generators. I am not sure if in this case it can still be considered stealing from artists, on one hand the images were generated using AI that itself used protected material, but on the other hand the generated images are not themselves protected, as you noted.
And so this means that artists will still be threatened by these AIs in the future, even if they win on the copyright front.

I'm a self taught artist who learned on my own for several years, and I often study human or self made (i.e. posing dolls or self modelling) refs to get even better, but one problem I often have is getting the detailed and often complicated ideas and vibes I have in mind for my character, and getting them ONTO paper! AI made this much less stressful!
The advantage of them not being copyrighted, the fact that I usually take a minimum of 6 photos I really liked based on my prompt, and the fact that I still draw my own characters with their own final design, color palette and structure, means that by the end of it, it's so far detached from anything I've ever seen, and so much like what I envisioned, that I'm happier after!
Sure, I hear the Anti-AI folks, "what did you do before AI, huuuhhh?". I googled. I googled for 7+ hours, had a mental breakdown, and then enlisted my friend who works as a backend dev for Google, to help. Yeah. Sure, my designs before AI are still on par with my ones now, I just don't stress as hard not finding references that resemble the fuzzy image in my mind's eye. I can MAKE things that look like that fuzzy image in my mind's eye!! "But AI just makes composites of other people's art" yeah and? I'm not passing AI as my own art, I DRAW MY OWN SHIT, and how is that a bad thing in my case? If one image is a composite of say, 10 images, and I reference 6 AI images I really like outfit elements of, then at the end of the day, I'm referencing 60 photos am I not? Seems like a handy way to cut down googling for references for an eternity and just get what I truly want. Heck, it's not even the only way I do things anymore! Nowadays I can feed avatar dolls I make on a petsite as refs into an AI and get FURTHER personalized images to what I want!

This is still a partially invalid argument. I've seen plenty of disabled people who pursued art despite their disabilities. People who had 4 of their limbs completely gone and using their MOUTH to draw.

Well, it depends on how you interpret it.
Overall, 'AI art don't have that soul...all i see its like too perfection! Too complete. We artist do make some mistakes and there's a time we leave our art not to complete because it looks beautiful already. Its how we tell and convey our story & feelings in art.
Nowadays, quantity than quality and I'm tired of it. We're not a machine, we breathe and we learn. Mistakes? Everyone makes mistakes, get back up, do it again.

One question that's interesting to ask in this discussion is how do people get the inspiration for new designs and art pieces in the first place? Isn't that also just taking in their surroundings, life experiences and looking at other people's art? All of which they didn't have to put any effort into? Ai may look at a higher volume of art, but it's still the same process, it's just more basic because it only draws from 1 source (the internet) whereas people draw inspiration from many places whether that's conscious or subconscious.
Should artists not be allowed to draw anything if it takes inspiration from other art? Is it the process of making the art itself the important part? If so, are you really creating it yourself?
When i draw a picture on paper, I'm moving a pencil (a tool) to create an impression on the paper and form an image. When i use ai to create an image, i also use a tool (keyboard) to input information into an algorithm creates an image, taking inspiration from other artworks. Why does the type of tool and the time taken to produce the image matter? We can say that it's the fact that it's drawing inspiration from other artists without their permission that's the issue, but again, doesn't every other artist already do this - whether it's conscious or not?
Another question to ask is what is art? It seems like such a vague concept. Would coding be considered artistic expression in the same way writing is as long as one puts "effort" and "soul" into it? In that case isn't the algorithm itself a type of art? If art requires intended meaning, then how can we prove the creators were lacking in it? And what about people who commission art? Did they intend any meaning being the art? Is it now not considered art because they didn't create it to express anything, but rather because they're being paid to draw specific lines and fill them in with specific colours?
Don't misunderstand, I'm not arguing for or against ai art being morally good or bad, I'm just asking questions that i think are interesting around the issue. I don't really have an opinion on the matter overall. But it would be interesting to hear replies to these questions from the perspectives of artists

And about the topic of AI copying art works, I am wanting to go to art college and pursue art as a career. My classes are set up around that idea in mind and I haven't seen any work that is similar to my art style. My art style which includes brightest colors known to man kind, sharp lines, and generally not an anime style or anything similar.

The big problem with all this AI war is, that i dont see what the goal of it is.
I'm a software developer, i dont have much to do with AI especially "art ai" yet. But also in my field, software developement, AI is becomeing better and better at doing what right now is still my job.
Yet i think pushing againt it would not help me, like every techonology, once its here, it stays. Until it gets replaced by something better.
So what i do in my field and what i would suggest to artists, is to explore the possibilities that these technologies provide and see if it can improve your work. If Ai can generate something decent, then what could an ai do in the hands of a very skillfull artist. Thats how i see it.
And maybe you have concerns in terms of moral issues, i understand that, in that case maybe only explore it for yourself and dont make profit out of it.
But the legal and moral siede, is only a issue as long as its unclear what training data has been used. But im pretty sure there will be a point where an ai model will be createt that solely consists of images from consenting artists.
I'll be honest...this entire video to me is the perfect of example of the place AI art may have in the future.

A tool in a kit, but not the final product, nor a replacement for the skill needed to make said product.
It may also be used similarly to how a picture is taken and then heavily edited in photoshop to get a final product. Regardless, AI produces a 'base' that needs alteration and work from skilled individuals, it does not produce 'art'
Generally speaking, I strongly disagree with AI models using material that is not within the public domain, however. Models should only be built off the public domain.

Honestly if you can use AI to craft the framework of an essay and then polish it to make it make sense, you've just used a tool. If you continue to have access to that tool, you could even use it in your professional life. Note the caveats -- when will you not have access to this tool? Does practicing drafting essays from scratch help you learn how to structure arguments, so that you can make yourself verbally understood on the spot?
When you're not being graded or playing sports, results are mainly what matters. This does NOT mean it's okay to hurt people or rip them off, I just mean if a language predictor helps you write some of the broad strokes of an essay first to save time, it ultimately doesn't matter. You _are_ cheating yourself out of developing a skill if you rely *exclusively* on using that tool. It's not super fun to make it into adulthood and realize you lack a solid grasp on certain forms of self-expression, but there's no requirement that you must be all-or-nothing on using any given tool of any kind. Just because you've microwaved pizza rolls before doesn't mean it's now impossible to cook them in the oven, or vice versa.
Anyone who thinks art is impossible to reach without pain and efforts or is useless, needs to see how prehistoric humans did art… like lots of it. The cave ones are especially pertinent since they were in dim lamp light and they look that great…
If prehistory people who fend for their lives as hunters and gatherers can do it in dim light conditions on a wall with no prievious help from artists already existing you can too.
🧶 The braid guy would be cool as an antagonist shapeshifting dragon with power over shadows or something. I suspect his AI art references came from photos of Ouji style garments so try looking up that term if you want more inspo for him (I was doing references on pumpkin shorts a few months ago and stumbled onto this.) The deer boy is the little brother of a friend that crow girl makes along the way. He's IMHO a bit like Mordecai from Lackadaisy Cats lol just less intense and more goofy. Crow girl might be a magical girl; could be an angel but I prefer the idea she's a genius with bird traits. Maybe she's actually a harpy? I like to think they share a hobby and he's mad inspired by her, looks up to her and asks her for advice, which is why they hang out even though he's very introverted normally (also he feels out of place with other kids in his age group ofc.) He's super serious but young while she's very knowledgeable and focused on her goals but a bit ditzy and just as easily flustered as deer boy. They get along great! Except for when they fight lol. Could also be interesting if it turns out deer boy has a heel face turn but could also be nifty if crow girl has a heel face turn instead. However, she feels like she'd be a MC before he would so idk. Her design was probably garbled together from Rin Tohsaka of Fate Stay Night (I suspect one of her head wings is based on Rin's hair bows) so you could get inspo from there too. Also, what if for deer boy you only had the brown as a warm color while everything else is cool? Could be interesting but you may have tried that already. Anyway those are just my random thoughts!
I haven't even watched the video but just based on the premise of it; I think there's a big thing you're missing... The POINT. AI art is based off of stealing thousands of artworks from other artists, and compiling them into the generated end result, so how is it okay to steal from AI art, when it's already stealing from artists by itself?
literally. drawing ai images is like taking part in a dtiys where the host traces and steals all their ideas.

You're using the character reference as a INSPIRATION not tracing over it.
Using AI to create very specific and tailored references for character design is a big help. but don't immediately take that and post it online. Go over the refference and itterate on it in your own artistic way. It no longer becomes an issue especially if handled properly.
My personal favorite of these would have to be the second one, both because anything even remotely headed in a mechanical fantasy direction is right up my alley and because of how well your take on the gold patterns on his coat turned out. In the AI image, those just looked like a mess of extra detail while you managed to make those details work and stand out in a way I don't understand for a lack of artistic expertise, but is just really nice to look at regardless.
Also, for the third character, the AI seems to have attempted giving him something small and dangly on a string to hold in its second image. Pair that with your increased focus on his relation to candles and I'd say his powers could well be a hypnotizing control over those small flames, used subtly. Basically don't get in a 1 on 1 conversation with this guy, especially not near candlelight, or you will find yourself ending up with a deal that very much favors him. A combination of a charismatic businessman and the whole deal with the devil trope - works with his horns as well.
Ai arts main bad part is that it has no meaning or intention. You see digital art pieces and they have perspective and emphasis while ai just copies what it sees because it doesnt understand human emotion
I feel like people who are trying to replace artists with AI just don't care about making something unique. I don't mind AI, or artists using AI as part of their working process (In fact, I use AI myself as part of my process when need be,) my issue is with people who post AI images and either post the raw, unedited image, or straight up try to pass it off as their own work, if someone goes in and fixes up the AI artifacts, or even better, put their own spin on it, at least there was effort put into that, I can respect that.
The best use of AI in my opinion is to fill in gaps in your ability while you learn to improve in that specific thing you struggle with, I struggle with outfit design, so I get a bunch of AI images of the style I am going for, and mix and match different aspects to get as close to what my idea was as possible.
Another great use of AI is for placeholders in your work, I have no experience with music creation, I can't make good music even if my life depended on it, AI music generators are great for placeholder music to get the feeling across (in my case that would be a game prototype.) keyword: Placeholder. the final product would obviously benefit greatly from a professionally composed soundtrack that fits the specific product, but for a prototype, AI generated placeholders of anything work fine, no one is about to spend hundreds or even thousands potentially on a prototype of something when you can't guarantee it going any further.
AI art can absolutely be copyrighted if the IP within belongs to somebody. It is considered a derivative work.

Artists should band together and post terrible art to mess up the generators which feed from their content. Also, copy them! You get free character designs, and they get to get angry over the fact that you're stealing their stolen content.

The terrible art isn't going to get picked, there's always some curation of the training data, and there's so much data out there that you'd need people to draw crap on purpose for years for it to work.

In my humble opinion, I think ai has a couple uses in the art world, just not regular PICTURE art (I can definitely see why artists have a bone to pick with AI art there), but in animation, you see, even if you hire the BEST animators in the world, it will still take forever to make a single episode of an anime or series, so what I think the animators do is instead of drawing like 60 frames per second, they instead draw like 10 or 15 and the AI handles everything in between and the animators just clean up the inconsistencies that come with the AI, I think AI art is great at what it does, but I think it's EVEN BETTER if there is human moderation as well, thank you for coming to my ted talk.

My opinion is that real hand-drawn art makes my brain tingle and my eyes glow but ai “art” makes me feel uncomfortable and everytime I look at it, it feels unsettling
For people who want to use AI art like this, you should have some caution: if it's your own output then of course you're safe, but only raw AI output can't be copyrighted. If the original artist added to or adjusted their output before posting it, they own the copyright to that art. Using AI art as reference, edit, and trace material is a really powerful art flow tool, though. Just be sure that if that's how you choose to use AI it's either your own output or you can confirm it's unedited. Though, of course, asking permission is probably your best strategy. There's no laws requiring it, but most AI artists are also involved in the non-AI art community, and we know how dramatic and over the top and unreasonable artists get about perceived 'art theft'.
Honestly, I think that an actually good use for AI would be in politics...
Many people are afraid of "being dominated by AI overlords" or something... but honestly, the fact AI can analyze simultaneously tons of parallel factors, elements, possibilities and how they interact with each other means it could probably come up with ideas capable of bringing us to a utopia way better than any human politician could.
As longs as it only gives the ideas, and we humans are still the ones still taking the final decision and making it happen, I suppose that would be a huge step up for the world.
As someone who uses ai to generate images, I always find it funny when people think that this is gonna replace humans, it’s gonna allow artist to generate a bunch of cool shit but if you don’t have an artist at the wheel it will always end up being super generic

AI art should only ever be a tool, like I create a photo and then draw it by hand myself from the photo. I can’t stand it when you see people selling ai stuff like they’ve done it themselves. It’s a good base for people wanting a certain pose for a person or a face that doesn’t exist in rl. But ai art is being sold as proper art and it hurts my heart.

Great video... I'd like to note that I think calling it 'art' is generous I know a lot of people use air quotes but I think a better term is AI generated images. (even though the term AI by itself is wrong anyway :/) Art suggests a creative PROCESS and that's what the AI stuff completely lacks.

I use AI to kinda skip my collage and pure ref steps in the character design process. It can spit out all of that info very quickly. So yes, definitely good to use as a reference tool. But do remember to use real photos for the anatomy and proportions!
My guess is that the point of what people say AI will replace every isn't what is currently being produced today, but rather the higher quality ones you can't tell. I want to say that I agree that AI isn't going to take over the art industry, after all, a really good artist capable of drawing real life scenes would've given up the moment cameras came out, it's about what is produced as much as it is the stuff behind what produced it. The story of a original character piece, the art style of an artist, the artist themselves, and plenty of other things.
So then imagine an AI that didn't make the obvious makes with the hands, proportions in certain areas, or mistakes in logic. It's when you can't tell that the picture is created from a machine stealing from a database of other artists hard work that it gets scary because it provides an alternative that if someone can't tell is illegal, isn't. After all, 'it ain't cheating if you don't get caught'. So when someone takes a keyboard are produces an artist in 30 seconds that would take someone else hours to create, and no one even knows it well, I've already said what I said.

Another thing about AI art is that the AI is completely incompetent when it comes to drawing anything that isn’t a standard pretty anime character. Some time I’d like to find one of those “insert a drawing and get an AI rendition of it” websites just to watch it struggle to draw me little Pokémon-esque creatures I like to design.

While watching the video something popped off in my head: What if start showing people the positive things about creating and what you as a human being get out of it (growth, experience, becoming steady, decluttering your mind...) so people get more interested in starting drawing than using AI... sorry I cannot really describe the thoughts that popped up.
I just thought about PewDiPie and his 100 days art journey and what he GAINED by learning to draw. AI art might be interesting for the moment, but in the long run, people will get fed of it and will realize it's not gonna give them much somehow and start to explore again what it means to do things with your own hands again... at least I hope.
The problem with AI art is that theres so much of it now that AI's are unknowingly training off of it. therefore reinforcing the same problems. That's an unsolvable problem, and why the AI guzzlers cooked themselves before they could make AI artists good.

I just would disagree with the purpuse and usefulness of art thing. art _can_ be uselful and _can_ have a purpuse, but it doesn't have to, and it doesn't make it more or less of anything.
people are obsessed with utility and purpuse, and honestly, that only hurt creative activities like drawing. do what you want because you want to, there's no need to justify the purpuse or utility of it... but nah, that's probably just me
well for me, I see AI art as a tool I could use to improve myself and like old artist in the back of the day they use every tool they have to improve themselves. Because sometimes we all have some art block, can’t think what to draw so at least this can basically remove that art block from us and we can still practice for our drawing.
the ai character design stuff rly bothers me bc I've been doing commissions and now my customers will sometimes send me ai images as character references and I always have to explain that I can't really do the design 1 for 1 because the ai drawings are absolute nonsense. Every single time its like a belt that connects to nothing, chains that evolve into nonsensical blobs, fabric that follows no logic, lines that go nowhere. It's awful.
