  • V8 Supercar drivers Garth Tander and Shane Van Gisbergen have had a once in a lifetime opportunity and joined the select few civilians to fly in a simulated dog fight with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) leading into this weekend's Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.
Tander and Van Gisbergen experienced extreme g-forces in an F/A18 with two of Australia's leading pilots, Squadron Leader Jason 'Easty' Easthope and Flight Lieutenant Jason 'Crossy' Cross at the Williamtown (30km north of Newcastle) RAAF base.

Jason Easthope was Featured in an Australian series called Real Top Guns which documents the lives of RAAF pilots. He was just amazing talking you through a 1 v1 fight with just the models on sticks. His situational awareness, knowledge of airspeed and relative position was incredible and he could do it in the air and make it look easy. Time after time dogfighting with another pilot, it was just "Terminate....Terminate..." The other pilot said he has never come across anyone with such ability to see it, plan it and execute it. Easthope was a pilot in the RNZAF on Skyhawks and lost a close friend when he was attached in mid air refuelling and barrell rolling at the same time, the joined aircraft came out too low and the other pilot crashed and he survived. An extraordinary career.

Would be cool to see the fighter pilots taken for a few laps in the super V8s, to gauge their reactions from their perspective. Good video.

Having said that though, the physics are completely different between the ground and the air, just like the difference between a car and a boat. The pilots would be impressed, not by the speed, but just by the feeling of being in a fast and agile car.

3:10 'We will stop now' - as the other jet does a victory barrel roll in the background!

Who wouldn't but not many are actually cut out for it. It really takes a certain type of person to perform at the level required. But man if your serious shoot for the stars. My advice start as early as you can. You really need to train your body and mind. Luminosity is actually good for early training even as a kid believe it or not. You have to be 100% driven and focused though. It is a very competitive selection and environment. As it should be for the reality of the job.

True, but I would imagine going fast near the ground, like in a race car, is equivalent to going very fast in the sky, like in a jet. It would be interesting to see the pilots go along for a few laps.

F1 cars do around 300km/h, a Fighter Jet will do around 1915km/h. Nothing against F1, I love F1 racing, but there is no comparison really.

yeah and get bored after a while. F1 forces are, really nothing compared to Fighter Jets, any fighter pilot on earth would have a go in a F1. they'd be suprised about it being a go kart, but not all excited, they'd go after a few laps and go "is that all this things got?".
