Having owned 5 GSD's over 38 years, this has to be one of the best pieces of information for prospective GSD owners (whether first owners or not!). I was pleasantly surprised by the word 'research'. In particular, talking about the topic of personality for an owner. Also, well done for outsourcing the training on your first. Whether self trained or not, being trained properly is pivotal for a GSD apart from socialisation. And here's what I believe is the clincher - The right personality of the owner compliments the training and it's success. This breed looks to the owners for strong leadership. With defined boundaries, they flourish as a much more than just a pet. Lastly, whatever dog you have, remember that the dogs abilities are most often limited by the human owner. Brilliant job.
My aunt owned a gsd and also a husky. She couldn’t decide between the two so adopted both lol and she says that German shepherds are more people pleasing and loyal while huskies are more independent.
Great video. I would add that its a good idea to choos a breeder as near you as possible, so that you can visit the pups offten. I spent 2 hours evary saturday with the breeder and puppies, before I brought my dog home. During that time I got to know the breeder very well, the mama, grandmama and all the puppies. Also got loads of info and tips.
Hello, great video, I enjoyed watching. You are very accurate with your info. I have 2 Czech line GSD's a male and female. My male is around 100 lbs now he was heavier, but he was getting fat so I cut him back lol. I love my GSD's they are very smart loyal and loving. They are not for couch potatoes, though i have to make sure they get plenty of exercise every day. Thanks for the video
I got my very first dog I alone own and she is a German shepherd mix with a all brownish golden coat and her face is black and I’m just watching videos like this to make sure I’m the best owner I can be
Would encourage looking at shelters first before breeders, theres tons of German Shepards or mixed breeds from the Shepard waiting for homes there. You could be saving a life.
What about the puppies that need a home? What if I want a purebred dog? What if I want a heath tested dog? What if I want to raise my own puppy to reduce behavioral issues? What if I want a working dog? Also, you should research why there are so many dogs that are shelters.
Alexis Willoughby Okay.... lots to unpack there. First off, lets dispense with the obvious: shelters all have veterinarians on staff, on call, or on contract. They all make sure the animals get thorough check-ups, vaccines and are sterilized. That is often not done at pet shops or even by many breeders. Second, there are many pure breed dogs in shelters. Third, there are tons of dogs of all ages in shelters, including puppies. Finally, working dogs come in all types and breeds. A mixed breed work dog may be as good or better than a pure bred one. Have you seen Malinois/Border Collie mixes?! If you have something particular in mind, search shelters and rescues, then go to a reputable breeder if you still haven’t found something.
Seriously? First of all, the people like you who comment that only rescue dogs to SAY they rescued a dog. In reality, if you rescued a dog it would probably wind up right back at that shelter. Rescuing a dog is a beautiful thing but it has to match your personality, financial ability, and experience level with dogs who may have behavioral issues. And like that other guy said, what if you want a puppy? What if you saved for 10 years to be able to properly raise and care for a puppy throughout their whole life? To have that experience? I can't stand it when people come into these kinds of videos and spout shelter talk like the person doesn't have a right to take any other action. What if you said you wanted kids and someone told you, well you should adopt first ? It is horribly rude.
Thanks so much for the detailed infos! I’m in the same situation of informing myself dumb and deaf about getting a GSD, knowing well that I’ll be ready to get one in about 1 year in my future, just to get things right. First time owner. Can’t wait for it… until then, research, research and lots of preparing to do.

How is a gsd as first dog? I want to get a rescue female 6 years old. She is very gentle and quiet. We have the time to play with her and no other pets or kids atm
Can I get GDS as a first time dog owner? I live in an apartment which is pretty big enough also close to a garden. One of a gsd owner asked me not to get a gsd as a first time dog owner. Please help.
Basic explanation of the lines: German: West German Working: high energy, active and aggressive. Built for agility, speed and protection. The gold standard of the original GSD. West German Show: More bred for looks than work, they are a bit less aggressive. Better as a family dog, but still suitable for service. East German (DDR): Large, squared off, heavy GSD with lots of energy and aggression. Tougher to train and less suitable as a family pet. Fantastic for police and military work. United Kingdom: British Show line: Similar to West German show, but even less aggressive and energetic. Good at agility, and has a pronounced sloped gait. Great family pets. USA and Canada: American Show lines: Strong aesthetic profiles, but reduced activity and aggression. This is the most family-friendly line. Highly obedient, but not very good at service or agility work. American military even prefers Belgian Malinois to American GSDs. Pet/family lines: come from all countries and are least athletic, least aggressive and most varied GSDs. Can be any color or combination, including white. The truth is, most people don’t really want and cannot really properly train/handle working line GSDs. They require MASSIVE amounts of patience, time, experience and exercise to be happy, obedient and safe. They need lots of help socialization too - much more than most dogs. I would not recommend them as a first dog. Show and pet lines are a safer choice, especially for working couples or around dense population. You will need to spend less time with them to not have issues than a working line. Contrary to common belief, the purer a line is (any line), the more pronounced health issues become. Even working dogs are being bred into issues.
Looks a lot like my shepinois but my dog doesn't have the black saddle like gsd, his coat is uniform blonde. He has the slightly longer mane just like the dog in this video.

Everything you said was beautiful and true! I do believe though if a person has had absolutely zero experience with dogs or dog behavior, they should not get a German shepherd. You are the exception to the rule here man. Most people can't handle it. The research alone doesn't give them the ability to lead the way a German shepherd needs. (And most of them don't do the research lol) And just to put this out there- anxious, indecisive, timid, and/ or lazy people please do not bring these dogs into your home. These dogs need 100% consistency and effort. They will become destructive without it and that's why they have the reputation that they do. Incapable humans not the dogs are at fault. Oh and to the Karens who treat their dogs like "fur babies"- please never get a German shepherd. Not that you would anyway, but a spoiled fluffy 7 pound purse dog is a lot different from a GSD. Absolutely love your dogs and show them, in the right way. Spoiling dogs is not the way.
