  • Our penguin colony gets fed a variety of fish, including capelin and smelt, three times a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). Although the penguins are fed at the same time, each penguin has their favourite type of fish and can be incredibly picky. For example, some penguins will only eat their fish tail first, while others will only eat the fish head first. Fish are also used as a way to deliver their daily vitamins and other necessary medication. In the mornings, keepers will feed with two separate buckets of fish; one including the fish containing vitamins and the other without.
The Keepers use a clipboard to track how many fish each penguin eats to monitor both their health and their seasonal appetite changes. The keepers can look back and determine annual patterns; including egg laying, chick-rearing, and moulting appetite changes. Penguins also go through something called a “catastrophic moult” once a year where they lose every single feather, all at once! A penguin who regularly eats 10-15 fish a day might eat as much as 50 fish a day before this moult!
Overfishing is a major threat to African penguin populations. You can make a difference by becoming more aware as a consumer when it comes to the type of fish you buy, ensuring that they are sustainably caught or raised. You can check out the Seafood Watch Guide at www.seafoodwatch.org/. Also, don’t be shy about asking questions at restaurants or your local grocery store when ordering seafood.

I think you should feed them in a more natural way to make them work at least a little to get their food. This would provide good mental stimulation as well as exercise. I understand that some need some supplements but I think you could feed most of them in the water.
