Even in the Fighting Method books, there is no single mention of the oblique kick. All kicks are explained, Bruce made extensive picture series of the kicks he used at that time. But not of the oblique kick, except of one single picture. And all that was 1967, not to mention all the streamlining of JKD that happened later on... Don't kill the messenger.
The advantage of the oblique kick is just that it can be used in punching range. You can suddenly kick the opponents knee while they are focused on your hands. But this range is typically avoided in JKD because of the focus on mobility, longest weapons and high value targets.
It can be done, but it's far weaker than the side kick, which can be done from same distance.
Thanks a million again for the clearest and most concise Jeet Kune Do explanations on RUclips. And I think I have seen them all. Peter ny
Makes perfect sense. You can see Lee use the oblique kick a couple of times in the Norris fight at the end of Way of the Dragon (or Return of the Dragon, in the USA). but that, of course, is movie fighting, where he also used high kicks and spinning kicks etc. But, for real life, you make it easy to see why he would have dropped it because of its incompatibility with the fencing type stance and footwork. Thank you sir.
This explanation demonstrates an in-depth understanding of Jeet Kune Do. Thank you for sharing.
Great video as always Thomas, hope your seminar was fun!
Was very good.
@@ThomasMarxJeetKuneDoIFO any clips?
Thanks Thomas, great explanation. And to everyone who is arguing "but it will work if this and that" or "I do this kick all the time" - its not about dismissing the kick as "does not work". The point is that there are more simple and efficient ways that are just as effective or even more effective. Doing same damage while staying in a safer and more mobile position for example. Same goes for trapping and grappling and all the other things that Bruce stopped using.
With enough training you can probably get anything to work, but ain't nobody got time for that. I'd rather train the most efficient technique that is still effective.
I do agree that the oblique kick from the back leg is impractical unless your timing is SUPERB in real time combat. I would recommend using it while you in a Muay Thai clinch. Use the kick to disrupt their balance, then quickly execute a hip toss or go for a leg takedown. It’s not useless, you just have to modify how you use it

@@ThomasMarxJeetKuneDoIFO Hey sifu, I tried a few times to join. I was clicking on the Apprentice option. Put it is not going threw. I have an xpectation debit card. Once I tried to purchase something from a European country and it didn't go threw bc the debit company has some restrictions in some European countries. I am going to check. Unless the issue is on the youtube side and I can try tomorrow. Anyways I am going to call the company to make sure if its on my side. Where are you guys located? Germany?
Yes, but RUclips is US company... As a channel, we can't influence that in any way. Thanks anyway...
@@ThomasMarxJeetKuneDoIFO I forgot to mention that I also tried the paypal option last night and it wasn't working. It might be an issue with the youtube server. I will try tonight when I get home. If it doesn't work. No worries. A few days ago I applied for a credit card. And I will will retry again. I"m a huge fan of your channel I want to do my part to support it. So don't give up me.
@@ThomasMarxJeetKuneDoIFO Hey sifu, It went threw. RUclips might have been having a issue when I tried last night to join. But its done. Happy to be able to do my part to keep this channel going.
this kick is dangerous for jkd ,cause you open your guard inside
Just to be clear, oblique kick just simply means side kick and front kick diagonal downward to the leg. It was called like that when Jon Jones spammed it to oblivion and even when Jones used the sidekick to the other guy's leg, people still called it oblique kick.
Still, the rear leg stomp kick truly doesn't fit the sideway stance and the approach of JKD. Even in WC and other chinese kung fu styles, it was used as a stopping tool and never meant to damage the other guy's knee. Sidekick is better since you can both intecept attack and deal damage at the same time
It was also used as a step over close
No need to break structure for an inferior tool to the same target. Simple.
Same as we don’t jab in a fight, use lead punch or eye jab.
Sir can you tell how we can defend continuous punches done by boxer. Like multiple jab-cross combos. And how we can put the same type of pressure on opponent by just using front hand.
Counter between the beats, use mobility, attack legs, etc

My favorite I wear boots 👢 all the time works for me in my neighborhood it's not uncommon too have a self defense situation, teep low kicks side kick And obliques are effective they have worked for me , against street fighter punks
Screwdriver works also. But electric one is better.
@@ThomasMarxJeetKuneDoIFO are you joking or dismissing my comment , I'm 48 years old and I have to fight sometimes I'd rather not fight , so much crime and violence , I support your Channel and I like it , I'm actually out here defending myself what's JKD Add What is useful subtract what is useless tailor-made for the individual
@@bugs4680 I think you did not understand my comment. Oblique kick is the screwdriver, sidekick is electric one.
@@ThomasMarxJeetKuneDoIFO I'm sorry 😞 it's hard for me going through the BS day in and day out I have a hard time with balance and let my guard down which I'm working on I'm sorry my friend please forgive me
Oblique kick would be the worst kick in a street fight
Remember, Bruce did it in a movie, so it must be fitting JKD, just like the darts against hand guns😂
