I own my own swing so i cant comment on other peoples swing i had many golf lessons my first coach was the best now i get coached by his coach path and impact is all i work on and keeping the hands still as possable on my down swing look at jordan spieths golf clinic i try and do the same with my hand the hips hardly rotate on the back swing the hips tilt not rotate i thunk its Mr sir cotton talk a lot about tilting the hips rather than rotation of the hips i know his old school but i see this in jordans swing aswell
I'm going to try this when I practise. Guilty of just hitting 8 balls at a time and walking after them using the same club to hit them back? 4 or5 times. Then I change club and repeat.
I absolutely LOVE this video! Highlights how often I've wasted time practicing and highlights the ways to take imropovements from the range to the course - another area I think a lot of golfers struggle with
I spend quite a lot of time at the range (every 2/3 days) but then I just enjoy hitting golf balls.. Best tip I ever received was that it’s pointless hitting ball after ball after ball every 3/4secs, because you don’t do it that quick between shots out on the course.. I therefore structure my practice in two parts. The range has trackman installed which helps a lot, but I always start with my 3 wedges, hitting 5 balls each (raking style practice) with a quarter/chipping swing. I’ll then move up through PW to 3i (again 5 balls each iron) hitting full shots. Each shot, has the same pre-shot routine I use on the course before then addressing the ball and making a smooth swing. I’ll finish this part of practice with same routine for my 3w and Driver. I’ll then pick a course in my head that I’ve played in the past, and then pretend I’m playing each hole to yardages I’ve just hit in th first half of practice. That way I get to practice the random selection of clubs that is repeated on course. Any balls left in the basket at the end, I’ll just warm down with some wedge chipping. A lot of practice I know, but I seem to keep my +5 hcp regular 👍🏼 Cheers
Very fortunate to have trackman on hand! But it sounds like you are practicing pretty well. MAybe some block with the 5 balls method structure could help focus too. Keep at it!
I loved your honesty Alex in identifying imperfections in your own swing and also your frustration in some of the demonstration shots you hit. It makes us amateurs feel so much better. Keep up the excellent content and thanks.
Well this game is not easy all the time :) and the set up thing is a tendency of mine so it’s important for me to show why the swing looked off. And perfection is unattainable is golf :) Cheers!
Some really excellent suggestions. I added the comment below before I watched the video. I have changed my practice routine many times, and the main thing I've learned is I don't do what I set out to do. If the sessions going badly, I quit early, because I just get more and more frustrated which makes the session even worse. If it's going fair to middling then I start hitting more full swings and forget about the thing I set out to focus on in that practice session. Both saw hardly any improvement. Now I try very hard to stay focussed on the swing mechanic I'm trying to improve, and try really dam hard to ignore the hit on the ball. I hit a ball with a normal swing every 5th shot at most. Practicing without a ball has helped tremendously, plus I can do this indoors whilst watching golf, win, win. I'm practicing to grove a technique, so during that process, ball strikes are not the focus. Then another session will be going through the bag with random clubs as if playing on the course.
I love practicing and go 2 or 3 times a week, I work on things from my lesson, start with wedges and move up eventually finishing on driver. Work on clock time swings with the different wedges, then hit draws and fades with all the irons, try and then hit the driver as far as I can.
I am working to rebuild my swing from the ground up. I found a professional on line that teaches in a way that resonates with me and am following his method of creating a solid repeatable swing. I practice a lot indoor without using a ball and some moves without a club. I swing and try to get the feel I want and use mirrors and cameras to verify the changes I am trying to make. It seems to be working well. I am also fortunate to have a GC3 and indoor simulator so I can get some data on how I am swinging the club and can adjust as needed. In the summer I spend a lot of time in the yard hitting birdie balls which are a great way to practice your swing without needing to go to a range. I have a net and the launch monitor to practice my driving. I am retired so I have the advantage of being able to go to the course during the week and play practice rounds. I spend very little time at an actual range other than to practice putting.
I tend to be a raker, but my favorite practice routine is to “play the course” on the practice range. Other than that, I spend most of my practice time hitting wedges to various targets.
OMG I saw myself in every one of those practice stereotypes - I am relatively new to golf and just love hitting balls! I tend to work through my clubs starting with my 9 iron then finishing with wedges, and keep hitting until I get 5 or so good shots in row. I loved your 5 ball training plan though and will be trying that for the next few months so I have more structure to my practice. Thanks for the great videos - they are a huge help!
I love this video so much. As a golfer who never played in school or college. I’ve never really been taught how to practice. I’ve actually searched for things like this and very little info out there. People say block practice or this or that. But love how you break it down and explain it. Would love a follow up video on how you practice short game next!
Well that's great to hear! Exactly the goal and glad it's given a focus. As for shortgame, will do more on that.. We have a couple of series dedicated to it. One in particular is theartofsimplegolf.com/be-deadly-from-100-and-in. Also have a few on the channel... ruclips.net/video/WgqquGfFLuA/видео.html
Thanks Alex. I enjoyed your presentation. It was Nicklaus who to me connected playing golf with hitting balls on the practice range. If he detected a flaw in his game he would go and sort it on the range...it could take 2 balls or 25: but when he felt it was sorted he stopped. He used the "play the course on the range" in other practice sessions. Many people commented on how few balls he hit in these sessions. One of his comments was something like...I've just played the front nine...how many holes do you want me to play?? I think the one ball short game practice is a winner. In golf you only get one chance to get it right. Out of ten shots; ( one ball randomly chucked around the green) how many times can you get up and down? Brian, the Golf Doctor has other excellent advice on his channel.
I used to say practice makes perfect when I was younger...my mom would always correct me and say PERFECT practice makes perfect...great video...I like also "practice how you play " ...when I played competitive golf, on the range the week before I would always " play" the course...and in my warm ups before my round on the range I would always "play" the par 3s and then "play" the first 3 holes...so when I got to the course I was less anxious or excited as I already hit these clubs 30-45 mins or so prior...
Good lesson. I'm all of these guys, but change thru the session. I'm a Raker to get loose and work thru the bag. Start with 8 iron up to driver then to wedges. Then random clubs to specific targets. Focus on short game to very specific targets. Finish with putting and Make bets on how I hit it?.. Then off to the course!!
Well done! I hit the range maybe twice a year. I play a par 3 course in between regular rounds. Reason being, once I am within 100 yards of the hole, I don't want to take more than 3 strokes to get in.
Par 3 courses are so good!! I miss having the one in the Uk to play. Fun and effective as it removes the focus on distance etc. and if you can be good from 150 yards in you should be set
I "rake" after a warm up to find my swing. Once i connect correctly a few times, i start into a regular routine. If I don't hit for a few days, I can be off with my swing mechanics. A quick 10 to 15 off the top of the bucket allows me to fine tune small mistakes away in a near continuous motion.
Definitely a "Frustrated Fixer". I'm taking a break from golf currently and re-assessing my approach or whether I go back to it at all. I never actually play golf as such because there is always something wrong with my golf swing, so I spend my whole time trying to fire fight and fix this problem and that problem. I've never had the freedom to just play.
You are not alone. Many golfers have been or are there now. That’s why you can have simple ideas and principles, enjoy some swing mechanics to feel but just pick your target and swing. We have the S.I.M.P.L.E process program too that goes through everything
This is very helpful to focus my practice, thank you! I like having specific drills in mind to make use of the time (although another reason to be on the range is for mental health -- the relaxing feeling of just being out in the sunshine hitting balls!). In the past two months I've just come back from an almost 30 year absence from golf.* I haven't been back on a course yet, but have spent about 30 or so sessions on the range. Usually I only take 3 clubs, my goal at the moment is just to get a feel again for hitting the ball. I probably use about half the bucket (unknowingly) in a block kind of practice -- going through various swing thoughts as I get a good feel again. And the rest is variable -- I'll use whatever iron I have with me on the day for various pitching targets, low shots, higher shots, shots from divots, many times pausing between shots deliberately to slow things down to help mimic what happens on the course. Same when I'm around the bunker/green at the range -- one club from a range of lies and distances. (* until my early 20s, I played weekly as well as some pennant golf (against now-Aussie pro Richard Green once!) for my club, for about 10 years. I also worked casually in the pro shop all weekend when I wasn't playing. Back then I never was able to practice on a range (our course didn't have one per se, and I didn't ever have time especially as I teed off just after first light and was lucky to warm up with a few practice swings and a few putts). When I think about it -- in the 1980s and very early 1990s -- I am surprised in a way I got to single figures for my handicap with how little I really played and practiced. All of my golf -- only about 6 rounds a month -- was on the course. I've probably only played about 5 rounds in the past 25 years)
Well that is a n interesting golfing journey as it were! Sounds like you have natural talent and make sure as you start playing more, you don't get too far away from that. I'm confident you will benefit from even the videos here on out channel but much more step by step programs in our club and digital resources.
Your story is very similar to mine. Long break from the game (12 years) and I agree with you that hitting balls down the range is great for mental health. Cheers.
I'm a quick hitter. Have the net outside and I try to hit a few times s day with instant results, hit driver, hit irons, chip 10m at a time. Evenings/after hours I'll sometimes have putting/chipping practice when I have an hour to mess around.
I don't actually practice anymore, I tend to just practice my swing in my bedroom without a club if that makes sense, just getting muscle memory for my body. I tend to play well without practice. Though when I do go down the range to hit a few balls out, I just hit a few with different clubs, like say I start off with a 7 iron then hit say 10 balls and when I feel like I'm hitting the ball well enough to move on to a different club then I will. Also have you got the link to that hip speed video you mentioned before Christmas. Happy New Year to you and your family.
@@TheArtofSimpleGolf yeah that's perfect, thank you so much for that. I suppose I'm just trying to add a few more yards without losing accuracy. I'm only hitting a 7 iron about 145, but 135 in the winter
I have two types of practice. 1) Getting loose, feeling where the clubhead is going before a round. 2) Full solo practice starting with wedges then to Driver. After that practice moving the ball in either direction, imaging playing shots on the course I plan to play. My fault?? Often doing it too quickly..
I take a scorecard of a local course to the range and practice shots imaging I am on the course, I won't be hitting the same club twice in a row unless I need to (normally a 7 iron twice on a par 5) 😊
Every 5 games I play but practice without score, put ball in rough, in fairway bunker, side hill downhill lies, etc to practice the stuff you can’t at the range.
That’s a big session! I would urge you to try less time and more structure. Challenges, tasks, specifics. If you already do.. ramp up the difficulty and pressure. I wager you could get same benefit in half the time
Been playing fifty years. Everyone is different. I have a friend who NEVER practices and he can play scratch golf. Drives me nuts. I usually hit a couple wedges, 2 or 3 seven irons and maybe 2-3 drivers and then roll maybe a half dozen putts and I'm good. I usually keep around a 3-5 handicap. I'm not a fan of banging golf balls. Maybe when I was a younger guy I would practice for tournaments, but I'm 62 now and I don't give a crap.
I’ve always been jealous of folks who never need practice. I have always messed around with my swing too much. But I’ve also enjoyed that side of it and actually like practicing.
I thought your back alignment was too hunched over, which would indicate a heel posture, interesting huh? Your describing in this video, the difference, or the incremental move from conscious to subconscious. The best subconscious player in the modern game is Jordan Spieth, the reason for his decline, or any pro for that matter, is they started playing consciously, they over thought their swings, or are in a CONSTANT state of change. No matter where your games at, once you get on the course, I think you should just play, try to get into that subconscious mindset. Sorry for the long comment by the way.
Very well said. It’s often why many very good players only seem to be around near the top for a year or two and then disappear. Immelmann, Weir to name a couple others. The hunch is maybe a little more than I’d like and to being on heels.. (the camera angle is off though making it seem more)
@@TheArtofSimpleGolf. Probably was camera angle. I've been in that zone many times playing golf, but the more I learned, the less I was in it, because it seemed like I was always thinking, always changing, which is not a bad thing, but once on the course, work on the changes & let it fly.
I'm new to your channel. I sure hope these vids get shorter in length....one of the things I get annoyed with (re: YT Golf improvement vids) is how too loooooong most of them are. Now a days, if they're longer than 10 min, I generally won't click on 'em. I just wish most of these instruction vids would make their point, and close out within 5 min or less. The YT channel 'More Pars Golf' is a GREAT example of nice and compact golf vids! Just a thought. : )
We have plenty of shorter ones. But also it does not actually help golfers to do short vid after short vid. It’s then just tip after tip after tipZ with little reference or awareness as to why.. or if it’s it’s applicable and one should be doing it. Providing the background is important to know if it’s relevant. The issue becomes when folks try and apply too march and nothing sticks. All of my lessons for most part work with one another. But not all
Only goal is to embed the learning for one thing but also to ensure it’s applicable to oneself and how to do it. Too many videos on RUclips are too after tip and folks try them without enough substance to know if it’s for them But yes. Always improving the delivery
A old golf pro told me you will never improve on the golf range so left the range and went and practiced my putting and chipping and bunker play i went from 36 to 15 handi cap i spent thousands of hours at the range now i only go to the range if im working on something in my swing
What if you just like having a practice hit for fun? I trade the forex market. Am not interested in becoming pro. However, the freedom I get from just smacking golf balls on the range. In nature is freeing and keeps me off the computer screen..

Aim for specific target area ( yardage indicator). Occasionally practice ball compression/scooping shots!
Good and keep at it!
I take a scorecard of a local course to the range and practice shots imaging I am on the course, I won't be hitting the same club twice in a row unless I need to (normally a 7 iron twice on a par 5) 😊
Perfect
@@TheArtofSimpleGolf thank you for your reply buddy
Have a happy new year and hope you have a healthy and wealthy new year 👍😃
Right back at you!!
Thanks!
🏌️♂️
Every 5 games I play but practice without score, put ball in rough, in fairway bunker, side hill downhill lies, etc to practice the stuff you can’t at the range.
Like that!
I thought I was tough on myself but maybe need to up the abuse a bit! 😅
Don’t be too harsh lol ;)
I’m not improving and honestly I’m a machine gun on the range, what do I do to slow down?
I target on my setup routine. A lot of players say my 2 practice are my setup routine. No work on a setup routine before hitting the ball
The suggestion is in the video. Take 5 balls or randomize club and target
Have a drink between every five balls
@@reefslayer21👍🥂
Added to my favorites. I do love 💘 practice, consistency, muscle memory 💪
All of them
Lol hopefully not for too long
I usually warm up chipping and wedges then just practice a bunch of trick shots.
Sounds fun :)
All the above
Hopefully not for long ;)
I give myself 2 hours....30 to 45 minutes on my short game( chipping/putting) rest of the time on the range focusing on my swing, stance and distance.
That’s a big session! I would urge you to try less time and more structure. Challenges, tasks, specifics. If you already do.. ramp up the difficulty and pressure. I wager you could get same benefit in half the time
@@TheArtofSimpleGolf I will take your advise on cutting it in half and focus more on the three items you provided me. Thank You!!
@@rockystelone21 enjoy and let us know how you get on
@@TheArtofSimpleGolf absolutely
That quote (practice & luck) was Gary Player not Arnold Palmer. Good video though.
I know. Error from editor 🤦🏻♂️
What's that song/beat in the beggining?
Not sure.. we use epedemicsound and other resources
@@TheArtofSimpleGolf If you ever find out let me know!
Gary Player not Arnold Palmer said that the more I practice.....
🤦🏻♂️
If you can see it, you can hit it and if you can hit it, you can hole it. Palmer's greatest quote
@@timbeaumont4292 if only I could swap/add 🤦🏻♂️
If you really think these methods of practice don't work then you should see how I play when I don't warm up at all
Too funny :)
Too funny :)
Does this man give private lessons
Yes. Online, in person, in the membership site and we have digital programs too
I’m all those guys depending on the day.
Well hopefully this can help you focus :)
I'm a time killer that gets frustrated after a bad shot then starts fixing while raking only to finish off by bashing my driver
Well the first step… lol ;)
Hope you apply a little structure from now on ;)
@@TheArtofSimpleGolf lol. I wrote it all down and will be implementing it immediately! Thank you sir!!
@@AnangryLibertarian excellent! ;)
Not only do look like justin rose, you sound like him too !
Or does he look and sound like me?
Great tips! But I do think this is Justin Rose in disguise. 🤔
Or is Justin Rose Alex Fortey is disguise?
Any practice is better than no practice.
Maybe
But not all
Driver bashers are great to release tension... for me, at least...
It's kinda fun too :)
@@TheArtofSimpleGolf I challenge myself to hit the safety net at the end of the driving range 😊 lots of fun
This video could have been 4 min shorter easy. Sometimes viewers will hesitate to select a video that they feel is excessively long.
Only goal is to embed the learning for one thing but also to ensure it’s applicable to oneself and how to do it. Too many videos on RUclips are too after tip and folks try them without enough substance to know if it’s for them
But yes. Always improving the delivery
A old golf pro told me you will never improve on the golf range so left the range and went and practiced my putting and chipping and bunker play i went from 36 to 15 handi cap i spent thousands of hours at the range now i only go to the range if im working on something in my swing
That’s pretty damn good advice;)
The basher
It’s fun sometimes though lol
Best thing I ever did was....take a couple weeks off then......QUIT!!!....stupid game
You are only a true golfer once these words have been uttered ;) 🏌️♂️💪🏌️♂️
I’ve probably been guilty of all of them🤔
Well I think most of us have ;)
I’m a killing timer
Hope this reminds to be a little more precise
5 ball block starts at 5:19. Random starts at 12:41. He has good info but the video is just too long.
It’s to ensure the knowledge is embedded and applicable to oneself.
I didn’t see The Twerker as one of the personalities. Must be a Vegas thing.
Love it!!
I’m a hacker. Oops, raker, I meant
Lol! Hopefully not much longer
Bud… Gary Player coined the phrase - The harder I practice, the luckier I get. Just saying.
I know 🤦🏻♂️ bit of a mix up!
All good, loved your vid though 👌🏻
"Golf Practice Is A Waste Of Time" ... not something you'd hear Gary Player say.
It is the way most try. Not how Gary player did or still does. Leads to worse habits
Sniffing badly bra
Sorry. Can’t always be 100% :)
The best practice for me is to just go out and play 9 for fun..
Fun is the key!
You want to have square shoulders at impact? totally confusing
Not exactly. It’s just a feel
Your hunched over to much. Open the club face a bit.
Yes as I mention in video.
Frustrated fixer
Perhaps not for much longer🤷🏻♂️
What if you just like having a practice hit for fun?
I trade the forex market.
Am not interested in becoming pro.
However, the freedom I get from just smacking golf balls on the range. In nature is freeing and keeps me off the computer screen..
Fun is good. No harm in improving too ;)
Just clickbaited your way into an un-subscription , titles like that sound cheesy and exaggerated asf big no no
Not clickbait.. it’s saying exactly what I mean. You won’t improve as much as you’d hope or expect if you practice incorrectly
I agree with
