I know of 2 bookstores h that had a cat on staff and a library that allowed a neighborhood cat to come and go. He was very popular with the patrons in the juvenile section. My neighbor's cat used to cross the street and hang out at the elementary school playground during recess because he knew that the children would pay attention to him.
I started on the main recommended reel, and I've watched three consecutive videos on the story of this cat. I'm glad to see the resolve. Also that judge seems old time tough, but he's still sweet enough to say 'kitty heaven'. The big old softie ")
The issue was not exactly the cat per say, it was more of the cat bringing more young kids in and helping them build confidence in reading. People worried that if the cat was removed, some young kids wouldn't feel confident enough to read out loud anymore.
I loved the library when I was growing up. However a library cat roaming around the library? I'm there dude!!!! My children would be wanting to go to the library to visit that cat! Especially having a cat just curling up to you while a Curious George and Madeleine book!
I think it's fair to not want a cat there. Animal allergies are real and can even be life-threatening. I don't deal with allergies personally but I say let the cat live at someone's house if there are people in the community that have allergies.

It does not threaten the livelihood of the cat to take them out of the library and put them in a house. The library is a public place and if I utilized it and had allergies I'd be pissed. BTW: a library cat is very good for PR for the business community. People will go out of their way to meet a library cat. We had a cat who lived in a Calistoga bookstore for it's entire life. Now, unfortunately they don't have an independent bookstore any more and of course, no cat.
