- Apologies for the length of this video, there's a lot of ground to cover for a video about a 32-year-old recurring character from a Tokusatsu series.
Dr. Thomas "Tommy" Oliver, PhD. is one of the most famous and powerful members of the "Power Rangers" franchise, if not the most famous of all. Played by the late Jason David Frank, Tommy started as a 19-year-old new transfer student at Angel Grove High School in 1993's "Green With Evil" 5-part episode from the original "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers" series. He was turned evil by Rita Repulsa's dark magic as the Green Ranger, then turned good again when the Sword of Darkness was destroyed. He joined the main Ranger team as the 6th member, eventually transitioning to team leader when he got he White Ranger powers in season 2. Tommy became a regular main character for the next few years until "Power Rangers: Turbo" where he passed on his Red Ranger role to another hero halfway through.
Tommy would return in the early 2000s, first with the "Wild Force" 10th anniversary episode "Forever Red", then in 2004's "Power Rangers Dino Thunder" as both the team's mentor and Black Ranger. Tommy would make one last live-action appearance in the 25th anniversary episode "Dimensions In Danger" from the second season of "Ninja Steel", facing a robot army led by a duplicate of himself.
Admittedly, I haven't read much of the "Boom! Studios" comic books, which is why I didn't go into too much detail about them in the video. In the comic universe, Tommy was the second Evil Green Ranger after a past minion of Rita's, then turned good like his TV counterpart and later passed the role to Matthew Cook when be became the White Ranger.
I'll go over the evil Green/White hybrid Ranger known as Lord Drakkon in a separate video, since he's technically a different version of Tommy from a parallel timeline.
