  • Our coal operations series continues. In our last video, we followed a coal train from Newman Coal to Pond Run Terminal and then back to Livingston Yard. This time we are making a run to our newer coal facility called Kelly's Creek Valley Coal Facility. Part 1 starts from Livingston Yard with the 35 coal cars from Pond Run and then we make our way down the mainline to Rainelle Jct. where the coal facility is located. After its loaded, we then follow it back to Livingston Yard. Part 2 will cover the run to a power plant in Ridgely, West Virginia where it will be unloaded. Expect to see DPU service as we climb the steep grade to the Ridgely Subdivision. For now, lets focus on part 1.

Finally, prototypical operations where people don't think it's nascar. Great work!

Been a WV coal ops Chessie system modeler myself, I absolutely love watching videos of this fantastic railroad. Thanks for sharing!

Superb models but if you are modeling DP operations you cannot have more powered axles shoving the train than on the head end on CSX AC units count as 9 axles

Truly phenomenal, but with respect - I have never seen so many cars, in perfect new condition: how about some weathering? As well, I WANT to see miniature color cameras in the cabs of these power units? I want to see it all happen as though I were in the cab - and I know, that when one of the manufacturers offers a miniature wifi camera that can be placed in the cab of a power unit, this will CHANGE the entire Hobby. Imagine, controlling/watching your power unit, as though you were in the cab - watching live on your computer, tablet, or cell - that will change the entire hobby. This is one of the very best model railroads I have seen on RUclips. A pleasure.

Love the concept of the coal train,,,but how many crews work this job?

We usually have only 1 crew assigned to every train but if we have enough operators, we switch them up to give everyone a chance to soak in the prototypical operating strategy.

I would have thought the empty coal cars would be dropped off at the coal mine with the road engines returning to the yard while a coal company switch engine would handle jocking around the hoppers through the loading process.

And that is a possibility. Many coal mines have different scenarios depending on their operational needs and how they are equipped. Our layout has 3 different mines and each operate uniquely

either way, the railroad would definitely want that power close by... the power going between the yard and the mine, back to the yard, THEN back up to the mine... that's burning a LOT of fuel

Are those coal loads or actual small black rocks made to look and represent coal? Either way phenomonal job!
