  • Say Anything’s major label debut and second LP ...Is a Real Boy is a masterful mix of angst, social commentary, and theatricality. It’s also the album Say Anything frontman Max Bemis ranks as his best work. But creating the album was a taxing process, costing him his physical and mental health, and resulting in a manic episode. We sat down with Bemis to talk about the process of creating the album, his mindset at the time, and what he would change about the experience.

This album helped saved my damn life. Lost my sister, was bullied, beaten at home. This album was everything I needed not to end my life. Through I still cut during this time, this album gave me hope to continue! Thank you Say Anything!

Is a real boy/was a real boy is impressive as fuck. Especially since max pretty much made up all the music besides drums. Dude will forever be respected for making this record

Sucks he became such a weirdo. Say Anything made incredible music though.

I hate it that he feels those criticism towards this album. His voice sounds perfect on this album, way better than anything else is ever recorded. Also all that hardship is how this beautiful art came out

I listen to a lot of music across several genres, and this album is in the top 10 of all-time. Beautiful, haunting, sad, happy. It's amazing.

Max is one of the most underrated artists of this generation. Every show I went to was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.

This is the most meta thing I've watched, I am having an out of body experience. This album has been the anthem of my life since I was 14. THANK YOU MAX FOR SHARING THIS SO SINCERELY WITH US. <3

Reading the headlines this morning I’m reminded of how important these songs have been to my life. I was 21 in Detox clutching a tiny boom box the staff let me keep in my room.

one of my absolute favorite albums of all time. a pop punk masterpiece. max is a genius and his voice (writing voice, not literal voice) is so clear in every song in a way that felt like getting stabbed in the heart, alone in my room at age 17
