"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on RUclips. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on RUclips, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

Not reporting on it, that's for sure. The sad truth is the people have vacated their own power and relevance after getting on the internet. Nobody can survive off just doing journalism and articles anymore, because nobody will buy a newspaper and very few will actually subscribe to websites. We can say its because they're all full of shit, but point to anyone doing good journalism and they're not making their money off just doing journalism. People like Kyle don't do a lot of journalism like that, most people on RUclips are just commentators and aggregators, if you watch a video from one of them, the original "content creator" gets nothing from it.
My brother used to work at the intercept, but he and 14 other staffers, including the former Editor-in-Chief, all got laid off.
The Intercept is trying to cut costs as much as possible and no longer step on toes any longer to maximize profits with minimal effort.

Tbh not surprised about this news
It's so absurd that, if you want to run the kind of stories that might get you sued, you seem to have to avoid working for the kind of people who could easily afford to fight a lawsuit.
Why are these companies so scared of being sued when they could so easily use the fact that they're being sued as marketing for themselves. Private Eye pretty much thrives on the fact that the rich and powerful are constantly trying to shut them up - it's a big part of their brand and it's worked really well for them.
Kyle forget to mention this, the intercept is also going bankrupt, atmost they have 12 months of operation.

Journalism is a tough business. People have the misconception that it's suits around typewriters smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee. No! It's contacts, friendships, alliances, sources and work. Phone calls and schedules, flights, missed appointments, bad days and sometimes a scoop.

And getting to the point that you have 10k people donating $10 a month would cost a lot and/or take a lot of time.
Ken did a hit piece on David for the ufo whistleblower. Ken is terrible
Lmao spoken like a true nutjob
If I could add 1 form of court reform, it would be to expand the principle of innocent until proven guilty by adding a vetting process to suing others where there is a preliminary process to provide evidence in support of their cause before you can successfully sue someone. I think it would be an extra step that would actually reduce the amount of court cases overall and speed up the process by preventing lacking legal standing cases get to court.
The main benefit is you wouldn't have wealthy individuals/businesses threaten knowing they would lose in order to get compliance out of people with little power or money.
Ok, but who gets to determine who has a legitimate legal argument? It would have to be a judge or a jury. And then both sides would presumably have to present evidence about it, including publicly questioning those with first hand knowledge of the events. Probably also start with some introductory statement and end with closing remarks…
@ilikeducksable no, I would have it submitted through paperwork documentation. Most cases are largely determined by what you submit ahead of time. You would submit your evidence where an internal court review team would look over what legal argument they are making and if there is evidence that is compelling to pursue a court case. This would not impede criminal cases that have already pursued these measures. In civil dispute cases, this is where you would see more work needing to be done.
Currently, you pay an application fee with the court, and then you get the ability to serve the individual and then get a court date. Again, the goal is to prevent BS cases where it is clear that they want to sue to threaten for the sake of threat. This would mean if someone claims defamation, they would need to produce evidence to at least show that the defamatory statement is false and any initial evidence that would suggest the defendant has knowledge and intent to be defamatory. If that can be done, then a case may continue, and you may then serve cease and desist letters and/or serve them with court date.
@@trevorcarskadon Ok, but who decides if it is “clear they want to sue to threaten for the sake of the threat?” A judge or some other person? Aren’t cases in front of a judge already thrown out if there clearly is not a case (what happened to a lot of those Trump election stealing cases)?
My point is that what is “clearly” true legally is up to interpretation (especially something like intent, it comes down to whether or not someone “seems earnest” - i.e. can put on a performance that stereotypically matches with societal standards of what we judge to be truthful), it’s not some fact of the physical world like gravity where we don’t need Stephen hawking to believe that a ball thrown in the air will eventually come down. So it has to be decided by someone whose interpretation that can be accepted by society in a transparent process so that the result will be accepted by society.
@ilikeducksable look I'm not suggesting any policy position is without flaw, but the goal would be to mitigate people suing people into submission, which I think is a large issue of abuse within our legal system. Former employers use their money to target those without money to fight back to force them to abide by their will. Large companies suing people into acquisition leads to monopoly issues. All I'm suggesting is a stronger vetting process that doesn't require the defense to have any money initially as it is a form of control rather than what court is meant to be which is to settle legitimate disputes.
If you think the idea is bad, then do you see the issues I laid out as a problem? What enhancements would you suggest to prevent those issues? Critique without alternative solutions doesn't help discourse.
@@trevorcarskadon Yes, these are real issues, but the “fix” for these issues may not actually fix the issues and make things worse, add more bureaucracy and steps for the powerful to take advantage of the powerless. In our current system, no system won’t ultimately be gamed by powerful corporations, so I think maybe steps like trying to make the system run more efficiently (ex. hiring more judges, having more public lawyers available, encourage students to study law, etc) so cases can be dismissed quicker. So not fundamentally changing the process, but making it run smoother so people aren’t stuck waiting, and also close the current legal loopholes. For a lot of these things, if the current procedures were carried out, wouldn’t these be solved? Companies already need to do things like justify damages, so wouldn’t crazy damages amounts be thrown out already? Just reject those quickly, maybe block them from repeatedly suing for the same thing (although, again, isn’t there a version of double jeopardy for civil cases? If not, that’s a simple fix based on current legal principles).
Kind of like what progressives suggest for border policy, we don’t need to like reinvent a whole new system for asylum, just flood the area with more judges, reject most of the people who don’t quality to clear the backlog so then people are disincentivized to show up try to get in unless they really think they qualify.
For an example where big changes could go wrong, in order to make things more “fair,” the standard of proof for college campus courts in sexual assault cases is much lower than true legal courts (preponderance of the evidence). This causes a whole different forms of injustice than before (usually when guys getting accused, kicked out, then later it doesn’t hold up in a true legal court).
Another example being free speech. Most people find bigoted speech an issue for society and may complain about it, but we don’t have laws against hate speech because it would cause a whole host of issues, a big one being: “who decides what is bigoted and how would that be consistently judged?”
Maybe I’m biased since I generally agree with the foundational legal principles in the US (innocent until proven guilty, right to remain silent, right to refuse unlawful search/seizure, tried by jury of peers, etc).
Don’t kid yourself, bro. There is ALWAYS influence. It’s not direct advertisers paying you to hawk a product or a story, but if your advertising revenue or direct contributions decrease, there is no doubt that you’re trying to figure out why and adjusting what stories you cover, or changing how you stories.

Sadly, tragically, horrifically, TOO MANY industries are doing this to the almost total-exclusion of the real purpose their industries should be existing for in the first place. Like "healthcare"-- or, more specifically, "HOME CARE". I've worked for 9 years for one home care agency that's been BOUGHT OUT 3 times while I've been there, and the current "general manager" of my office, who never has time to talk to me (like her predecessor did), once lectured me about my job in such a way that I came away thinking she was just a "BRAINWASHED CORPORATE STOOGE". In an industry whose focus should be CARING ABOUT PEOPLE, the care about people seems to be the LAST consideration. (A former client of mine, who I felt closer to than my own family, used to say this very thing, sarcastically. I realize just how right he was.)
WHOEVER the owners of this agency were and are, they clearly have NO connection, NO experience, and NO interest, in what the company actually does! Their ONLY concern is "the bottom line". People buying out companies like that shouldn't even be legal.
