Looks like you need a minimum of 15 kts + with a 4m with your set up. Thanks for posting your 1st run. I learnt a lot and hope to put it to good use :)
Geeees, looks like a lot of hard work. Gold star for effort and perseverance. Thanks for sharing. Great to see innovation and as always the early adopters pay the price until the designs and products mature to make it easy and safe. I'll stick with my kite for foiling until this sport matures some more. Talking about safe, I could see that short leg rope whiplashing the board back in your face after a speedy crash. I use the Oceanus board leash so I don't lose my board and find it ideal as the feed out rope is a few metres long with only a mild recoil so it doesn't ever spring back like the rubber bungy ones.
Next time will use bigger foil for these type of conditions. Should make it much easier. My leash is a 5’ and doesn’t really spring back just really short.
That was awesome. My favorite part is when you got on foil the first time I was thinking “f¥Ck yeah” and then you said it. Nice work I got the 5’ and it’s been 22 knots every day so waiting for 15 but been playing on the beach and it’s got some grunt wow. Ordering a 4 when they become available again. Nice work 🤙🏼
Nice video and great going ! Reminds me of the afternoons I spent falling off a windsurfer until I got planing ! Never looked back. Apart from being easy to carry, I'd still windsurf in that kind of wind.
I have to say this looked like a serious struggle but what sport worth doing is easy off the bat, I'm sure the lack of wind didn't help. When you did get up and packed it up in your hands the potential was there to see. Can't wait to see your progression
Watching you struggle with this new wing reminds me of my first experience with a trainer kite. Instead of getting it caught on the nose of the board and surface of the water I kept tangling my lines in tree limbs. Not much manicured lawn or unused open space near where I live. After several different tries I decided a hand held wing would be much easier for me to learn. More wind would probably be helpful but the learning curve looks to be fairly steep.
More wind and bigger foil would help. It feels a little harder to learn than the wing. Wing is a static object which makes it much easier to handle when not up on foil. All part of the fun and when in stow mode makes it all worth it to me.
Great video. Much better and educative than promo videos. Looks like some "power" is missing. Wind is too light for that small foil. Appreciate your effort to try to get the best out of it. I am sure you will like it at better winds.
Wow great to see the reality vs The promo videos! Looks like these need steady, non-turbulent wind… Also it looks like a longer control bar might help stabilize the wing? It often looks like the wing is over leveraging the control bar…
Damn! The struggle is real. You look to be a competent foiler and yet it wasn’t easy. I learned to kite at the same time as the richman brothers. I remember Jesse kiting with a trainer kite and a twintip. This discipline looks like a steeper learning curve. I would prefer using the parawing for downwinding only. Upwind doesn’t really seem worth the effort to me but others may disagree. Give an update as you progress. Thanks for sharing.
I should have been on a bigger foil. My use case is to drive upwind and stow for wave riding. I’ll continue to video and share my progress. Thanks for watching!
Big thanks for the reality check!!! I have seen plenty of your vids, i know how you rip on wing and surfoil so this is very sobering :) I have a SUPfoil board 5'10 x 28 x 117ltr that would probably make the first sessions less tiring. Those DW shapes have little static stability and the small flat bottom generates very little dynamic stability too...a more lunch tray type board becomes rock solid once it moves even slow. My 5.9 x 17 x 75ltr midlenght took some learning to ride with the wing because of this. I have watched vids (Steve Tobis i think) in which he said he preferred a wider, les pure DW shape for the Parawing. Maybe your Appletree (you had a floaty one?) would work better, with more wind of course.
For water relaunching single skin kites it's best to just lay it on it's back so the wind is catching the curl and holding it up, then you just lay it all out and tension up the lines. No clue if that works with the BRM one though.
Wow. After you put on the silks I am impressed with your patience. I learned a lot that when things get bad, just as long as you are not too tangled, just focus on line management and also make sure the wind is nuking.
Ya, patience is key. I never let go of the kite the whole time. I didn’t really have much issue getting tangled. Just need more wind. Can’t wait to dial everything in!
Very interesting adventure. As someone with zero experience or much of any knowledge about windsurfing/kiting. Don't you think that if the ropes of the Kyte go through the handle bar and are able to be pulled through. Essentially what you do with your hand to group the ropes but use the handle for the same purpose that way you can adjust the length of the ropes to specific wind conditions. Just as someone experienced commented under already. Longer ropes will be better in lower wind. And it seems you are forced to straighten the ropes after every fall either way. Maybe even connect the handle to your wrist and by simply pulling the ropes through it they can be easily straightened and once of the water you release the ropes to optimal length. And how likely is it to get tangled up in the ropes and impare your mobility. Can you get tangled up badly enough to drawn? Like if you fall over the kite and lines? Cheers and enjoyed the video.
I’m sure we will see many innovations with this type of product. Exciting times. Biggest factor for me is need more wind and/or use a bigger foil. I have added a knife to my equipment if I ever have to cut my self out of the lines. It is definitely a danger.
@@foilthegreats wouldn't a paddle be ideal for under 15knts wind then, or maybe the ultimate tool a paddle that can transform into a Kyte?(Or a Kyte that can paddle!?!)😆 This wing seems very thin you could definitely hoist it into a tube of a paddle or have the handle break in 2 and the Kyte comes of in the middle. Would that be something practical and usable or I am way off the mark?
I’m sure it’s possible. My use case is to drive upwind, stow and ride waves. Next time in these type of conditions I will use a bigger foil. Should get me up and riding pretty easily.
Looks like the lines cause a delay when you try to pump like a regular hand wing. Throwing you off balance. Maybe more of a board pump technique would work better. 🤷♂️ great job I’m impressed light wind, 4m, smaller foil and got up in under 20min.
You can really only pump the board. Even if it looks like it, I’m just trying to not crash the kite and pump the board as hard as possible going straight downwind looking for a bump assist to get up on foil.
If you have enough wind to fly it at the front window then slogging upwind is straightforward. If fluky wind and you're struggling just to keep it flying then downwind you go
@@foilthegreats you cannot pump a kite, the lines go slack, so you fly it up and even backwards, then swoop it forward and down to generate a power bust. The trick is not slamming it into the water on the downward power swoop. It should make a tiny bit of power with the parawing.
Does this have any potential as a deployable sail for paddleboarding downwind? I don't foil but i wonder if this would work on a paddleboard the way ive seen some people use wings on a pboard.
I'm just waiting for some innovative individual to put 15m lines on one of these foils and hacksaw the thing under his boad off to get a more exciting ride!!
19:00 is why I do it. No interest in kiting. I could have easily been ripping around with a wing. Just need to figure out the right gear setup. Next time will use bigger foil.
I have kited for 15 years since it started in 1999 but stop & now Wing & pump. I think this paraWing lines are a bit too short for this wind speed. BRM may be still experimenting with the length of lines for safety & efficiency of how it should fly. Longer lines (like extensions) if wind speed decreases …may be offered in the future. Noticed you were pumping the paraWing…it is still like a power kite…it needed to be swooped back & forth like “sine” wave to generate a pull but lines are so short it may not make any differences. I will try to convert my trainer Ozone 3.5 m ram air to short lines and try at local spot to surprise the people who still kite…ha ha ha!!
Updated..I was able to go upwind on my converted Ozone 3.5 m but not enuf to pop on foil..tried 3 sessions. Decided to order BRM 5.1 M w/no tax on 9/02..ship 9/10 tho..can’t wait!!!
I mean, I think it's just not windy enough. Coming from kiting, I wouldn't expect a 4.0 on short lines to produce enough power in anything less than 25 knots.
I have no kite experience. I would have used my 3.5m wing with either of those foils in those conditions. I wanted to see how comparable it is. Next time I would used the Helium 1750 and think I’d get up pretty easy. I didn’t mind all the slogging as it’s just a good opportunity for me to learn the handling and relaunch.
@@foilthegreats Ohh, if it's windy enough for a 3.5m wing, then it's pretty windy, even on the DW board. But I can probably scale it by numbers. Regular foilboard vs regular kite with a twin-tip it's about 1:2. So, say for example you are on 60L foilboard and 4m wing, a kite on 25m lines and twintip board would need about an 8m kite. If you shorten the lines, you lose power, so you need more kite. So, yeah, I would think that for a 4.0 kite to pull you on a DW board you'd definitely need a bit more wind. Maybe not much more, since it's a DW board... but yeah, a bit more. Again, just an educated guess based on my kite background.
Thanks for the details! Was around 15kts and dropped from there. When I did get up I had a bump assist and basically took off how a DW rider with a paddle would do. Had enough pressure with the kite to keep me moving and as the bump hit and started pumping the foil. Definitely needed much more wind for the kite just to pull me up and out.
Did Greg tell you to pump the Pwing? I've never seen him do that. It just seems like you are disturbing the Pwing profile by trying to pump it like a regular inflatable wing. Same in paragliding.. and snowkiting you don't want oscillations like that in the canopy or the AOA. Pump the board, not the wing. Will also put a lot less stress on the Pwing ribs. Cheers

Looks to me like what I did worked great, got me up on foil. Ya, if enough wind in the Pwing sure let it pull me up and pump the board slightly. I am super underpowered in the video and anything I can do to drive momentum forward should be done.
@@foilthegreats check your attempted pumping in the timecode link I sent in my prior reply. The Pwing is collapsing and losing its wing profile with all that arm disturbance. Think of when you snowkite in marginal conditions with a soft ram air snowkite or you paraglide and foot launch off a hill, if you do either of those sports. To generate drive and lift the canopy must be quiet so it preserves its shape. If yanking the lines around worked, you'd see PG pilots yanking their ABC lines around during launch, but they don't. Anyway, best of luck Greg makes great products.

I should have used a much bigger foil for these conditions. If winging in those conditions I would have been on either of those foils with a 3.5m wing. I wanted to see how comparable it is.
thanks@@foilthegreats I think you should add that to description. Helpful for folks gauging the challenge of this new discipline. Learning any new wind sport when under powered is a challenge. It was true for windsurfing, kiting, and winging so no surprise that it’s a challenge for a pocket wing. Bet you will have a blast when it’s 15-20. Looks like you managed the lines well, is there a time stamp for when you actually got on foil? Enjoy your new toy!
i think having small electric motor located at the top of the foil mast would be much beneficial than these wings. motor would give you boost enough for get out of the water and then turn off : PS: I do not wing foil.
Check out Foil Drive it is exactly what you described. I prefer to stay wind powered and not have to deal with the weight penalty a system like that imposes. I was just on the wrong size gear for conditions. More videos to come!
@@foilthegreatsI used my fd with my 6.2. Only way I got up. Winds were light and I was supplementing around 30 percent motor to wind. I got the gist of flying it, but even with the 6.2 I would want 20 knots. The bigger size would get stuck to the water too easy and was way too big to relaunch off the board.
I always preferred using a bigger DW style board and bigger foil over using bigger wing. I can see that size being not easy to handle when in the water. Good idea using both at the same time to get the hang of it. Enjoy being a pioneer!

thanks@@foilthegreats I think you should add that to description.
I would get a Hobie CAt
I’ll stick with the foil, thanks
i think having small electric motor located at the top of the foil mast would be much beneficial than these wings. motor would give you boost enough for get out of the water and then turn off : PS: I do not wing foil.
Enjoy being a pioneer!
it is all bad and ugly with this parachute :)
Check out 19:00 makes it all worth learning
The wind is too weak to fly the wing.
