  • This is a step by step video on how to change the oil on a 2013 Honda Civic EX sedan. I use a genuine Honda oil filter and Honda recommended Mobil1 full synthetic 0W-20 oil. See below for a list of tools/materials required. During the video I didn't mention this, but you need 4 quarts of oil and make sure that you check for leaks and check that you put enough oil in by pulling your dipstick.
    Tools required:
    - 17MM wrench
    - Phillips screwdriver
    - Oil Drain Pan
    - Funnel
    - 2 ton Jack (1.5ton should do)
    - Jack Stands
    - breaker bar (may be needed)
    - News paper/cardboard
    - Plumbers wrench (or oil filter tool) be gentle with the plumbers wrench or you run the risk of damaging your filter)
    Materials needed:
    - 4 Qts of Mobil1 0W-20 full synthetic Oil (6qts $27 on Amazon)
    - Honda 15400-PLM-A01 Oil Filter (5 pack $34 on Amazon)
    - Honda 94109-14000 Oil Drain Plug Gasket (50 pack $9 on Amazon)

You did a good job. I would have spent the money for a cap style metal filter wrench to remove the filter. Like other commenters the filter should go 7/8 of a turn after the gasket makes contact. Hand tight is a very subjective term. That would depend on how strong your hands and arms are as well as can you reach up in the hole to grab the filter. Instructions are on the filter. One other thing I recently found out after changing oil 40 years is once the filter starts to give a stream of oil leave it on until the stream stops. Much less mess this way. I also simply scotch tape the aluminum gasket onto the filters when I get them. Always used in pairs. The gasket is to stop galvanic corrosion between the pan and the plug. Great oil choice also.

Idk why this showed up on my feed but other than this is my car and google is spying on me. I also don’t know why I watched this because I know how to change my own oil. I have to say man this is a really great informative video for anyone changing their oil for the first time. Couple of things I noticed is I always get my drain plug tight but not too tight. (I have stripped a drain plug before) for my Filter I only ever get it hand tight and one little crank with my Filter tool. With my Filter I always lube the seal and also some of the Filter with some of my old oil. Just what my friend who’s a mechanic always did so I followed suit. Just want to say this is a great video man!

I have found that 4 quarts is the right amount only if the car is level when you drain. When I put my Civic on ramps,, more oil is drained and I need about 4 1/2 quarts to refill. The book says 4.2 quarts with new filter.

    • @nickv4073

+Luis F. Montana don't just hand tighten it, you may end up with a leak...the oil filter tool isn't that expensive (I'll get one before my next oil change), but even a plumbers wrench (if you're gentle) works...it only needs 9ft/lb (which is not very difficult), but with oily hands etc, you may not end up tightening it enough

If you want better protection of your engine, use 0W30 oil. 0W20 reduces fuel consumption but shortens the life of the engine.
