- Last week, it was Carnival in Panama and I went to Puerto Lindo and Portobelo to watch the ceremonies. It was beautiful to see the people dance to the Congos, an old tradition that was brought over to Panama from the african slaves. The streets were also full of scary devils with amazing masks who were smacking people to finally be caught by some angels to be baptized.
Find out more about my life with KARL on whitespotpirates. If you enjoy watching my documentary and therefore want to contribute a little bit for internet costs / video equipment, then you can do so here: www.paypal.com.... Thank you for your support!
Neat little video. Just another great example of why people sail to different parts of the world. Thanks for shairing that part of your journey.
I'm binge watching your story.
Great explanation of the dance. Nobody ever does this. Very informative. I like smart people 👍
I subscribed some time ago but haven't watched much. Just sat down and watched 7-26. What highs and lows. You determination (stubbornness) is admirable. You are inspiring a lot of people and although that is little help in a practical sense, on an emotional level it should help to charge your own batteries. I think half the fun of boats is the tinkering and fixing and making things, Just think of the other half of the fun you will have when you set sail on your adventure, the hours spent now will fade into insignificance. You have certainly inspired me to get off my butt and get my boat back on the water. (rigging issues). Take care.
Good to see the fun times. This is why we sail. To see and experience. The work and break downs are for the sea stories to tell over good food and drink with new friends and old.
Safe working,
Eric
I totally agree the boat is only a vehicle, not the life. The people are why we travel. Have a great week! looking forward to your next update.
Glad to see you're still at it! Sounds like you had a nice couple of well-deserved days off. Hopefully, spending a few days away will make Karl a little jealous and he'll want to behave and spend more time with you.
Very nice, thanks for sharing. And that music at the exit is pretty catching too...good stuff!
So glad to see you're smiling now Nike. The highs and the lows and reflections on life are what makes cruising so worth doing.
Just discovered your adventure and watched all your videos to get caught up. You have an amazing spirit and look forward to seeing many more videos as you move through your life journey. I wish I would have found your videos sooner. Feel like I'm looking in from the outside joining in almost eight months into it. Take Care. I will be following.
This was fun to watch wile drinking my coffee! Your a fun person!
I really enjoyed hearing about the people. Ignore the negative responses. They can read "how to books" if that's all they want from your videos. How boring. Adventure is what Karl is all about. So after the boat is built they'll stop watching?
What weenors!
This video is a glimpse of what's to come! Your adventure videos!!
Nike
Thank you for posting these videos. I really look forward to watching them every Friday. If your life adventure went perfectly to your plan, it would be predictable and probably boring.
I am so impressed with your attitude. Everything that happens to us in life can teach us what we need to know if we are receptive.
Keep up the great work. See you next Friday.
Glad you had a good time away from the boat. I was worried when there was no video on Friday that some thing had happened to you. Please keep up the good work this 62 year old loves watching young people pursue a dream
Love your videos!!! Wish you and Karl all the best
-David
Loved your video and glad that you took some time off.Good luck my girl.
Nice to see the people in your area. Sometimes we have to rebut our brains and get away. When you get away and come back you can clearly see how far you have come with Karl.
This video is why we do this Nike. The boat is the vehicle. The cultural immersion is the reward! The positive side is,..If Karl had just needed a coat of paint? You may have missed Carnival last week! I still have faith in you to fix Karl too. I know you can do it Nike. Great video, keep it up!
very true. And thanks for not giving up on Karl yet :)!
YOU can fix Karl. There are videos and DIY boat repair videos here on RUclips. The proper equipment and a little practice and you can fix Karl next time too! Not to mention gaining that skill. Don't sweat that Hater either. They just wanted to see Karl really bad! ;-)
This week, I have some panamanian cultur for you! I went to see the carnival in Puerto Lindo and Portobelo and tried to capture it in this video. Enjoy and have a nice week all of you!
Nice to see all aspects of traveling. And this video is great and shows some real traveling and a look inside a different way of living. Fair winds
I just started watching your videos and when I got to this one I realized I was in Panama City during Carnival during the same time you were! It really was super cool.
Well it wouldn't be an adventure if everyone were doing it!! Keep up the good work and great spirit.
Maybe you could give a little more explaination on how you found the boat in the first place and your criteria for choosing it. Might be nice to have a back story for all of your hard work.
btw Theres nothing negative about your vids or posts!
You need, and deserve a break every now and again :-)
Of course we all like the boat stories, but nice to see you immerse yourself in their culture..!!
Good for you!!! The old saying goes..."all work and no play makes Nike a dull girl"...or something like that. Enjoy yourself and your life as you work on your boat. The carnival looked like a great time for all. Cheers.
Very nice, and interesting. Thanks for showing. It was a good and much needed break from sanding Karl's bottom, lol.
Regards, Gary
Your take so much effort in making your stories. I find it absolutely wonderful the way you do it. Don't let one stupid person take you down. You are amazing!!!
Now I really like this, the cultural experiences. Would love to see more of this type filming.
hoping karl feeling better, hoping to see you two soon on the water, in video cheers
I was praying that you're dream was not over...that the holes in you're boat are fixable! maybe I missed a video? I'm trying to cross the pacific in my modest little boat from Canada to Australia, and my dream has almost ended many times before I've even started due to the state/seaworthiness of my boat... so I know the feeling.. Lucas!
Have fun aplying the elbowgrease on your boat. Liked this video.
Nothing wrong with that video. That was so cool. It made me want to be there. A wonderful break for those sore arms. Splended!
Hello it is Curtis here from living aboard boats. .I was Portobello last year and walked on the very streets you where on. I had the most amazing fish soup there it was an awesome experience as I dined with the locals
hmmmmm and the pulpo, jiammmi!
WhiteSpotPirates I not sure what was in the soup. it was kind of scary but it was good so I ate it. The little food place was beyond the grocery store and on the right side of the road. It was open on three sides and the kitchen was right behind the counter. An old woman was cooking. it was a real cool experience
ah no, I just meant that the Pulpo that they do in Portobelo is also a nice dish :). Your description of the restaurant fits a couple of places in Portobelo ;), but I think know which one you are talking about.
WhiteSpotPirates Octopus right? I never had it there but there was probably some in my mystery soup.
most of us are smart enough to know if you are still in shelter bay you are still working on karl. but all work and no play make jack (or in you case Jill) a dull girl. you are the one telling the store just like a book and you will show us Karl when you are ready to do so i am sure. most of us love your videos. like Troy V Peterson side this is why we cruse to see the world and there culture. this is that in the Truest since. thanks for sharing this with us. most of us love it and understand. P.S. love your head dress.
Thanks for this episode on Panamanian beliefs, traditions and their historical context..
perhaps your best video to-date, wonderful observations...........
I Love you'r journey,, Went through similar one,, Bought a cheap yacht and Lot of work.. :) BUT I'm happy to know my yacht in every detail.. You are Beautiful. Don't give up.
Always a treat to see you pop up on my "to view" list Nike so you just do what you want. Was just thinking that if welding repairs are the way to go you wll have to clear all combustibles away from the weld areas (inside the boat) or risk Karl going up in flames.Just thought I would share that thought with you :-(
forget the negatives.you needed a break.now your recharged..believe in yourself most of us here do.fair winds and following seas.
Ich wohne nun schon an bord von mehr als 6 monaten und mussen sie wieder zur arbei auf den schiff. Do not be discouraged with any negative events. Live the dream and don't look back with regret. See you in 27.
Rod
You look terrific ... keep on doing what YOU want to do :)
No you have to take a break once in a while too.
Remember when you do get the boat where you feel it is safe to sail. Half of the cruising life is enjoying where you are. Never never never be afraid to get off the boat and go to the local markets and festivals. That's how you learn the culture and get to know how the people of that country or region really live. Good on ya as my freind used to say. Your Finally Living!!!!!!
that's right, for sure. But I think I would feel more relaxed if Karl was at anchor without any costs than in Shelter Bay Marina eating up my budget while I am away...
WhiteSpotPirates
Patience it will come one day at a time.
Hey those Panamanians! Do they know hats or what? And it matched.
I want to quit my job, and sail, I am extremely envious of you!
Hey, what great show you got to experience!
Don't bother whinging, it's you no one else to decide what you want to share with us.
Ahhh.. I see now. I recognize some of the areas. :) I wish I was in Panama right now to give you a hand. I am pretty crafty. But instead I'm in Hawaii working on mine.
Great video. Ignore the 1 negative comment and just enjoy making the videos you make! I enjoy watching them. Thanks :)
Good realistic video, a sailors life.
What a great festival!
Love your hat!
Good Vibrations
🌹for you.. Awsome...
good vid
oh I have a question on internet coverage where you are> How do you get WiFi? do you get a plan thru Panama or how does it work? I it fast and reliable?
well, in Shelter Bay it is pretty easy...they have WiFi that you pay for (too much for a not soooo great connection ;)). Outside the marina you can use +Movil, Digicel or Claro and buy volumes. Depending on where u are, one of them usually works quite all right. But you often do need some patience :)
WhiteSpotPirates The reason I asked about internet coverage is because I also live aboard my Westsail 32 here on the Pacific side of Canada. I am sailing the west coast of BC and then up to Alaska. I plan to head south next year and was wondering about living on the hook and still getting decent streaming coverage. I have a you tube channel living aboard boats. and it is important to me to be posting videos. Thanks so much for answering my questions.
LOL I would like to have seen how your making out on the boat, after all been waiting all week to watch your video, and your late haha
Ah yes ..... back to work ..... the bane of existence when living aboard a boat. There is always work to be done.
If you will make a video and publish the results of the boat survey you commission to be done, I will try to offer advice for repair strategies based upon my 35+ years as a welder and fabricator.
In this way you will be able to judge whatever advice the surveyor gives you regarding repairs (if such repairs are economically feasible) by comparison with other person's professional opinion. (albeit offered long-distance and without on-site inspection)
I was going to add to that negative vote one more .... for not looking into the Cam. ,
and for always complaining about Carl :P also , today is Monday ! (not Friday),,,,late posting :)
Humaid, that is a very insensitive comment. I personally really appreciate the videos. I think she is doing a wonderful job, repairing Karl and recording the experience. Who hasn't complained about the tough work of repairing an old boat. Karl has new life because of Nike.
Michael Gibson Very insensitive comment huh ?! even though it was followed by an :P and a :) ,,,,?? i would call it a friendly comment.
humaid alqubaisi Sorry, I didn't realize you meant it as a joke. I'm not sure what :P is either.
AWESOME HAT! :+)
thanks, was a present from a friend for our birthdayparty and I thought it fit well into the carnival topic :)
It did! :+)
Ignorance is bless, but society suffers or does it ?
that did not sound anything like they did "not care about the devil" !!!
Yep, all work and no play, makes for a dull girl.
wow, I have never gotten a negative rating as quickly as for this video...Hm, maybe I should stick to boat stories.
Or, ignore it. People "dislike" videos for stupid reasons. I love seeing the local culture.
Too many internet trolls! You are doing great videos, just ignore it. :)
Most likely on accident.
Most here looks for boat stories, and this is a real boat story!
You're telling the story of the realization of a dream. A sailor dream.
You are showing us that nothing can be done without a lot of effort.
But everyone need a break somethimes, especially in CARNAVAL!
Wish u a good week! ;)
I thought this was a great video and a nice little addition to color your adventure.
I am sure the dislikes are accidents.
I am living my sailing dreams vicariously through your videos...Please keep them coming.
You have a gift for story telling... I smell the sea under your boat. I feel your fatigue as you work on Karl. I smile at the little triumphs that come with putting your mind, body and soul into a project like this.
You are doing what few have the fortitude to do. I think you are awesome.
you deserved a break you have been working hard if you don't take breaks now and then you'll get burnet out also what is the point of doing what you are doing if you don't stop to smell the roses so to speak ? Prost
how come your teeth are so white
