My favourite Harley Race story was that he was on the road with another wrestler, and they stopped at a diner to get something to eat. A guy came in with a gun and demanded everyone's wallets and watches, etc. Harley continues eating. The gunman demands Harley hand over his money. Harley without looking at the gunman said "Fuck Off." The gunman demanded again and Harley stood up, grabbed the gun before pulling out his own and said, "I said Fuck Off!!" The guy ran out so fast.
He also knocked a guy out for hitting a girl then ended up getting st@bbed by the man's friend, there's a newspaper article about it and he was like 20/21 when this happened. Also the story of him slapping Jumbo Tsuruta for suplexing Flair multiple times, Jumbo just accepted it and he wasn't no slouch as he was a Greco Roman Wrestling Olympian!
One of mine was the time with Ole out west somewhere, and of course they were drinking and speeding and some 'good citizen' thought he was going to pull Harley over and take him in as a citizens arrest .It didnt turn out too well for him.
No matter who you ask, the 80s and early 90s wrestlers all tell in their interviews that they had lots of respect for Race. Meaning they where all mortally afraid of him. Listening to those stories, I always get the impression they are talking about organized crime, not entertainment wrestling.
I'm currently caring for my 103 year old WWII veteran grandfather. It is a true honor and a privilege to help provide home hospice along with family support for such a great man. This is not a knock against the current generations because I am nearly 41 years old myself and among you, but my grandfather's generation was just built with a different mindset in an entirely different era of time. They simply don't build men like him anymore and it is a stark realization in real time. We have become distracted by the trivial and that is why a man like Harley Race wouldn't be able to work in today's wrestling format. That need for instant gratification is a shame because great things take time to develop and it only hurts the end product.

I think Jim Cornette answered this question the best. He was asked who would walk out of a bar fight - Haku, Dr Death, Bruiser Brody, or Harley? He said Doc could stretch anybody but Haku would eat your eyeball and Brody was a wildcard etc. When he’s done talking the interviewer says what about Harley? Cornette says “Harley would look around, assess the situation quickly, pull out his pistol, shoot the other 3 in the head, abd then calmly walk outside to smoke a cigarette. My mt Rushmore - Harley, Danny Hodge, Dick Slater, Haku
Nothing but love for Taker and the podcast. Especially since he hooked me up with tickets to the same house show where Randy Orton was discovered backstage. I was 16 and I had injured my knee at work, and I was struggling since it was my first major injury. My mom dealt with one of Taker's business associates at work regularly and called in a favor.
Boy, George South is a name that just keeps coming up in the most unusual stories and competitors. I met him at a carnival in SC along with the R&R Express, Baby Doll, one of the Bushwackers and Jimmy Valiant (who was bullying my then 8-year-old kid to buy a $10 bandana. That was pretty obnoxious, actually). I wonder if he should get HOF consideration for influence in the business as everyone seems to know him and has nothing but kind words to say about him.
Matt, I left a mean comment before since you asked for one. But in all honesty, you're a thoughtful, humble, self aware, humorous host. Keep up the great work.
Personally I think Gunther is a throwback to the kind of wrestler that Harley race was honestly. So when I think of if Harley race would work today I kind of go back to Gunther. If Gunther works today why wouldn’t Harley race? They are both very similar in a few ways and sure they are different in others but Harley race knows how to get heat on himself and always puts on a great match so that’s kind of how I personally think about it.

You forgot to add a fourth to that bar fight scenario. Andre in his prime. And still Andre said the only one he was ever afraid of was Haku. But Andre in his prime, not even sure Haku could take him.
I don’t see the psychology in today’s wrestling as much as when I was a kid. There aren’t as many moves done, that set up other moves later. (To Taker’s point). There’s no emotional buy in as a fan without run ins occurring or top rope moves. Everything looks the same today; everyone has a super kick, everyone has a move that incorporates the turnbuckle, everyone has a move that incorporates the apron or the table. Only matches that have emotionally methodic buy-in has been Cody vs Roman, Punk Vs Drew and Anything Judgement day related. Not just the storylines but the moves in the ring. None of those have a lot of highflying unnecessarily placed in the match.

You guys will get so many views if the undertaker just talking about the Mr. McMahon documentary
When you hear *crunch*, I better hear *ppSHHHHHHH*, kid. 🤣
You forgot to add a fourth to that bar fight scenario. Andre in his prime. And still Andre said the only one he was ever afraid of was Haku. But Andre in his prime, not even sure Haku could take him.
kane and taker are the jason and michael of wrassslin
