  • Some video footage of today's high tide at New Brighton on the Wirral coast next to the River Mersey.
High tide was at 12:50 (GMT) and it's height was 33ft 4in (10.18 metres).
The River Mersey at this point has the third highest tidal range in the world - Sharpness on the River Severn in Gloucestershire comes in second and the Bay of Fundy in Canada comes first.
The video I shot today would not have been possible had there been a north westerly gale blowing! When this happens, much overtopping of the causeway to Fort Perch Rock and the causeway to Marine Point would render the locations here inaccesible and dangerous.
If you are interested in seeing what this looks like on a really stormy day, watch the following videos I made:

The following video footage was taken during the storm and tidal surge at high tide (32ft 7in or 9.93 metres - 12:24pm) on Thursday 5th December 2013. It was estimated that there was at least a 6ft storm surge that day making the tide height to be over 38ft! It is only short in length because the situation gradually became so dangerous that I had to beat a hasty retreat to the other side of the road behind me:

However, even with today's weather conditions, at the top of the tide, HM Coastguard arrived to cordon off the area around Fort Perch Rock and the causeway to Marine Point. This is a normal occurence when tides are this high.
There is usually a high tide of around about 29 to 31 feet just after new moon on the River Mersey at this point.
All video was shot from a safe location and following the advice of HM Coastguard to move to places of safety.

This is great footage, I love the tide meeting around the fort, this is how I remember it from the 1970's, our family got cut off and we had to drive the car up into the fort gate way, it was very exciting, I think I was about 11 years old 😊 I am 58 now.
