  • Greg takes you on a journey from when he was a young man. Heading out in the bush with his friend Hardcore Warren. As they head out on a bear hunt they run into some trouble.
Greg is a self-taught survivalist from Canal Flats, British Colombia, who, since he was a boy, has read nearly every book on the topic. When he is not out in the wilderness, he is a professional dry-waller. He started his first bow drill fire when he was thirteen and spent the next forty years learning bushcraft and studying plants and edibles. He has even developed some of his own survival techniques and is a skilled hunter with both a bow and a slingshot.

"You don't get sleep in these situations."
That's a real man right there.
I find it incredible how important small details can be when it comes to survival. It's the difference between misery and being alright.

I had one bear encounter when I was alone, which I already told you about, but I've had so many rain/downpour camping experiences that all taught me what never to be without in the bush. Lighters (several), large and small tarps (for cover and floor), cordage, bungees and stakes and, yes, a rifle, a knife, some proteins, carbs, coffee in a ziplock, and something to boil water in. My scariest moment was caused by being unprepared in a sustained heavy downpour, and I was terrified as the elements wreaked havoc on body's ability to properly function. This fireside chat hit home and I'm so glad you presented this experience and wisdom. It's so true that experience is the best teacher. Much love to you and Finn.

We've all done things like not carrying kit that we should have. When things don't go as we want /expect we kick ourselves for not being switched on. These are without doubt the lessons that stay with us .

Your buddy should have put a glow stick with a note on it since you don’t have cell service. You’re lucky you didn’t get mauled. Can’t wait for the next fireside chat. They’re awesome!!!

Greg and Finn, this one's for you. From this
71 years young, woman who still is a lifelong camper and survivor while navigating life below the poverty line. Matter of fact I am looking for land in Tennessee where I can pitch a tent and live year round. Only way today that we poor, elderly folks can get by, and it seems that even younger people are beginning to embrace this notion. Anyhow, I was 45 I took my 15 yr old son to Tennessee to get his friend for the summer, and being poor we decided to camp since we had all the gear. Upon arriving at Rock Island State park, it was somewhat desolate and remote, yet wickedly beautiful. We set up camp and picked up his friend and came back to our campsite, spending hours hiking, swimming and relaxing. I cooked dinner, and followed protocol by putting all food away in my jeep, once finished. Our tent was fairly close to the picnic table where I had stored clean pots and pans and camping equipment, and we went to bed fairly early. During the night I heard a horrible commotion and woke up the boys and told them to remain silent, grabbed my baseball bat and light. Shining the light onto the picnic table I saw eyes boldly glaring at me, ears curled at the tips, smallish body and clearly not in the mood to leave. It began growling and hissing, and I felt my pulse racing. I had never seen a bobcat before but I believed I was looking at one now . Holding the bat like a shield and keeping the boys behind me, we inched toward the jeep and upon reaching it I practically threw the kids in, then jumped in the front. I knew once the bobcat had satisfied his curiosity that he would leave, which he did. Once daylight broke I retrieved my keys and drove up to the ranger station where upon I explained to him what happened. He told me it was more than likely a bobcat and that what I did was the correct thing to do. I knew in my heart it meant us no harm and I feel fortunate to have this encounter as one of my memories. I have had several other encounters with wildlife including black bears on some of my camping excursions and safety is paramount in encountering wildlife. But I also believe that I, over the years, have been blessed by all I have experienced in 71 years of living. Greg, you are brave and gifted with many talents, and we all appreciate you and your endeavors. Stay safe, curious, adventurous, and keep on keeping it real. Peace, from Albany, Georgia, USA.

Love the fireside chats. Can't wait for the next one. Sounds intriguing! One of the things that I love about this channel that you don't see any where else is that Greg is the first one to admit to not always getting it right. And that's authentic. That's what real people do. Some survival guys come across as never making a wrong decision about anything. Greg's done it the hard way, got the scars to prove it but still takes the time to share his knowledge through his videos and stories. And we love him all the more for it!

Great chat. I had the Bronco figured wrong. I had one that quit on me when I hit a pot hole in the woods. After an hour or so trying to diagnose I pulled out the book to check relay and fuse locations and just happened upon the information about the emergency fuel cutt-off under the dash. Check it and sure enough the jolt had tripped it. Great story about bad times. It always pays to have a small daypack in the truck to grab on any hike, short or long. I would have been freaked out.

It also was so bad we barely had any sunny days, it was just smoke in Vancouver 🇨🇦 last year. I was born and raised in Creston BC all we did was fish, hunt and camping. I’m miss it so much but my family is in Van, if it wasn’t for them I’d be back in the country. I mean you can camp out here but not the same. Even just star gazing you only see 3-4, in Creston the whole sky was covered, miss being there.😀🧡👉🏼🇨🇦
