    I can't believe you actually take your time to teach us fellow future guitarists how to play popular songs. Dude you're the best, you don't get a gold star; you get a platinum award!

    Extremely underrated guitarist. He might not play shred or fast lines, but his rhythms and choices of notes are all so musical and define the Maroon 5 sound. My hats off to you Sir. :)

    James is such a great player. He knows a lot of musical theory and always uses a few chords for an entire song. It's brilliant how he manages to get that deep sound with a bit of picking hand technique. I admire him and his very unique style. This lessons are great, and the fact that he took time to make these shows how much of a great guy he is.

    Thanks James! That was a very cool lesson and you’re great at explaining things without too much theory. Most people don’t really want to study music theory for years and years so they can teach music theory. Most people just want to play and you made it simple to understand. I had a lot of fun playing along man. I hope all is well. Best wishes in all of your endeavors from the Mid-Atlantic region of the USA!

  • @dandunning5602
    @dandunning5602 11 лет назад +3

    John Petrucci does this quite a lot - but trying to learn his songs is horribly difficult because of how intricate they are! But James Valentine is amazingly in touch with his fans and always gives something back to us (other than his music, of course)!

  • @lourossi2070
    @lourossi2070 9 лет назад

    James, it's nice that you are giving back! Here's a different voicing for the GM7 that works nicely as an alternate to your GM7: Barr all six strings at the second fret, then fret the second and sixth strings at the third fret - this is a GM9 add 13.
    The chord shape you are calling G13, is more accurately called G7 add 13. I used to refer to this chord shape as a 13th too, until I learned more about how chords are built. When I show this chord to a student, I call it a 7 add 13 chord, but also point out that it can be used when you see a 13th chord on sheet music. But to be a real 13th chord, you need to include the major 9th and perfect 11th intervals. From the bottom up, the intervals of G13 are: G (root), F (m7), A (M9), C (P11), E (M13).
    Cheers,
    Lou

    Thank you so much! This is the first time I've found the actual musician teaching how to play their own tune. I wish more did this.
    I was right. I thought you were playing triads in this version. All the tabs and charts and stuff get it wrong. They identify the chords correctly, but not how they're played. Of course it's a strummable tune, but to me, how you play it is the whole appeal.

    When I first learnt this, i was at school's studio trying to play and sing this when a girl walked past and i asked her, randomly, if she'd be willing to do the singing for me. That was the first time i met my ex gf. We've been broken up for 5 years now but this song will always remain special to me ✨
