This drummer was recently hired and toured with them before the dvd. I've met him he is nice and everything but I don't feel his drumming like I did before with the others

Holy shit that double bass is incredibly choppy. Needed to practice more...

couldn't agree more. it's like nobody could hear each other on stage...the drums are also totally different than the studio version. I want to get up there and push the drummer off and play it the right way =\

I remember the first time that I saw an Agalloch video with Aesop, and I was like, "Why the f%#k do the drums sound so sloppy and different than on the recordings?". Luckily, he didn't harm the two albums which he participated on.

This is my favorite Agalloch song. I saw them in 2012 and had the rad indulgence of witnessing them perform this song. It was plagued by the same issue: horrendous drumming. Drummer completely destroyed this beautiful song...

      how is the drumming bad?

    • @masokotanga2112

@@joshspawn161 As a drummer, I'm not a big fan of Aesop's playing. I admire his energy and enthusiasm, and he always seems to be having a ton of fun but, to be a top tier metal drummer, you've got to get the foundational fundamentals down to the level of pure muscle memory, or the entire house of cards comes falling down on a song like this. It takes thousands of hours of practicing the rudiments, both with the hands and feet, to get to that level. 99 percent of people lack the dedication (myself included) which is why the greats shine so much brighter than the rest.
A few things about his playing that I don't dig:
      1. He seems to have only one dynamic level (very loud). I've never seen him play with any subtlety, especially on the snare drum.
      2. His double bass is sloppy.
      3. His tempo shifts at times
      4. His technique with the sticks wastes an incredible amount of energy, and I'm not surprised that he appears exhausted in some videos. Physics absolutely come into play in good drumming. You need to use the rebound from the drum or cymbal to do half of the work for you, and economize your motions and the muscles that you're utilizing. Most of the time, all the power is generated from the wrist, not the rest of your arm, and the stroke is more akin to dribbling a basketball than pounding/bashing the instrument.
      5. If you want to watch a metal drummer who utilizes great technique, check out some videos of Gene Hoglan. He's obese, but never breaks a sweat, even though he generates immense power, all because of his technique.

this isn't something I would like to hear on concert, much better in the middle of forest under snow.

That isn't auto-tune at 3:10... it's an audio/video glitch. Watch and listen closely.

    • @Neroese1
      @Neroese1 8 лет назад

+Xenoforge78 It IS autotune actually. John had pneumonia on that tour.

Provide proof. It both sounds and looks like a glitch at 3:10 until I'm convinced otherwise.

RUclips user savatage13 uploaded the full performance without any glitches. The sound is still there (you can hear it at around 34:40 in that upload). It's not really a bad thing that they were using autotune. Pretty much any touring musician (regardless of genre) uses it. Touring and performing every night is very demanding on even the most talented of vocalists. That's why they often use automated pitch-correction software to assure that they give fans the best performance possible. I don't really think it speaks anything to the integrity of the performance. Even with that little slip-up, John is still great. Aesop on the other hand, perhaps needs some automated quantization on his drums haha

Spooky Man Huh, you seem to be right. It IS autotune. I was fairly convinced this was just a glitch. I agree, it's certainly not the biggest deal he uses autotune. He has sounded very off pitch vocal wise in older performances i've seen. It's very unfortunate they disbanded, but I hope Agalloch lives on in some form.

Xenoforge78 Maybe check out Appalachian Winter from Pennsylvania? It's a (mostly) solo project with a lot of solid albums. Styles range from very vast and epic sounding Symphonic Black Metal on his early records to a little more unique American folk stylings on more recent albums, making use of traditional Appalachian folk instruments like the dulcimer and banjo. Definitely a different vibe from Agalloch, but just as good in my opinion. I'm sure you've probably heard of Ulver, but some of their stuff is also up a similar alley

I vastly prefer John's drumming on the earlier albums over Aesop's. John may not have great chops, but he always played for the song (not surprisingly, given that he was the principal songwriter), and had a decent dynamic range behind the kit. I don't know the story behind Aesop getting hired, but found it surprising that a bandleader with a drumming background would hand over the drummer's throne to such a sloppy player, especially in a live setting. 🤔

wtf! I refuse to believe they used autotune for their live performance, unacceptable, I think its the audio track glitchin or something, agalloch and autotune, fuck no! it cant be, im going to burn all my cd's (sarcasm)

autotune? are you guys fucking serious? it's not britney spears. these guys have day jobs. it's a live performance. and i'm also sure you could all play the drums way better live than Aesop. you'd never make one mistake. dare you to say that to his face. the interwebs is awesome.
