The stock windscreen is about worthless. I went with a Madstad and cured that problem. If you want an ADV style bike you just can't beat these things for the money, new or used. I put 93,000 miles on a 650 V-Strom which was still running great when I sold it and I'm sure this 1000 I now have will beat that. A 650 or 1000 is just so reliable and all you need.

Great review of a great bike!! I bought my 2014 Vee new when they first came out. I was actually in to buy a Busa or a Kawasaky Vrsys. I sat on the Vee and it just felt right. The 14-15 models have the low torque range I love. Through the years I have tweaked the gearing suspension, protection, exhoust change and got rid of the emissions "stuff". Suzuki gave me a new updated ECU in late '14 as I was having stalling issues. I have ridden back country for over 50 yrs. I grew up on the farm in very rural MI and then finished shool/college after moving to Alaska in the early 70s. It was still a 2 lanr road to Anchorage. Anyway, this bike is a beast and ridden aggressively slides over or bust through nearly anything. I have pushed more dirt than most bulldozers. I ride withall kinds of bikes. The Vee is only 30lbs heavier than the 650, and can hang with pretty much anything. On it I have ridden the US/ canada, BDRs and adventure groups leadind rides, a BDR Ambassador and a sponsored rider ALL on my VEE! The rider makes such a difference on any bike. This bike has never broken down, turn key and go and it brings me home. It is smooth, fast, super torque, shifts so smooth and still looks good even dropping it regularly in the back country. It is also a great road tourer. Im getting older and me and my Vee may stick to the road-someday!! Even then, ten minutes and Ill have the original road gearing back on and roll effortless miles-like it does now butleaving a dusty trail. It is such an underatted bike and GOOD- it has a huge following. MOST Gen 1, 2, 3 and beyond STILL share the road and trails as the reliability shows. Its not perfect, but as far as do all- it does when you knowhow to unlock it. Still, ride what you got! All bikes are adventure bikes!! Stay safe my friends!

Great on logging roads here in canada i don't understand why more riders don't buy this half the price built better and they go way past the lifespan of most others . The oil change price from mine to BMW WOOOOOW lol unreal my parts so much cheaper which i never have to do . People try this you won't regret it !!

2018 DL 1000. So far, very impressed. Great for 2-up riding. Handles well. Suspension is comfortable. Engine has character and low-end grunt where you want it. The looks...they grow on you.

95,000km and counting on my 2014 dl1000. I live in between a national park and a national highway on a dirt road, which is a popular tourist destination. As a result, many travellers are encountered in my neighbourhood. However, the blokes with enough cash to be on a BMW gs, KTM, or Ducati Multistrada, never leave the tarmac. It's hilarious to see them at the service station decked out in their Ewan/Charlie costumes, with an internet of farkles, looking down their nose at the "peasant" on his battle scarred dirty Suzuki. My invitation to give them a guided tour of local attractions, is always met with an excuse as to why they won't leave the security of paved roads haha. Anyhow, it's their loss. My weapon of choice has taken me most places my old klr650 has, including riding to the top of Mt Wudinna. A large granite inselberg on my neighbours property. It's a long way to anywhere from here, and my biggest complaint is the fuel range. It is directly related to the throttle input of course. But, with all the wide open spaces in outback South Australia, it's actually hard to restrain myself from enjoying the more than adequate horsepower so I will have enough fuel to make it home haha. A small irritation I have learned to live with. On the open highway it has plenty of power and comfort to ride all day every day. When I make it to the city, I'm head and shoulders over all the boy racers, and they can't get away from me. In the Adelaide Hills, it carves up the twisties effortlessly, even two-up. Sport bikes hate me. I do ride it hard, and it barely raises a sweat. Even if you gave me a GS, I doubt I would give up this under rated, and often mocked machine. No plan to replace it any time soon. Happy trails.

After 12 years 115000 without any problem on my dl650 I decided to buy a 2019 DL1000. Without any problem I've been on it to Northcape and Eastern Turkey.
Done 38000 km by now. Only annoying problem EXUP valve servo motor which is expensive but technically crap and as on my DL650
Corroded contacts in the handlebar switches.

I have a 2021 model 26000km - paid ASD 10700 for it - its immaculate - a great bike and cheap to maintain - two of my freinds have the same age GS's with lower km and they are both covered in rusty bolts and exhausts - mine is a daily commute kept outside and hardly ever cleaned - contrary to popular belief Suzuki's build quality is exceptional and the ride is in my opinion - superior - and yes i have owned a few BMW's

Suzuki bikes are the best, people always compare new more expensive bikes against them Dr650 v strom hayabusa gsx why they are the best even if they are 20 to 30 years on the market. It must say something about them.
