  • The 28th Ryder Cup Matches were held 22-24 September 1989 at The Belfry in Wishaw, Warwickshire, England, near Sutton Coldfield. For only the second time, the competition ended in a draw at 14 points each, but the European team retained the Cup since they had won it outright in 1987.

Never quite understand how when the game ends level - the existing champions get to retain the trophy. Why is there not a play off to decide the winner ??

But his point was, in a normal golf tournament you don't just finish with a draw - you have a playoff to get a winner.
So why not do the same in a Ryder Cup?
I don't think it would be a bad idea. Maybe send out three players from both teams to have four-hole shoot-outs - you'd get fantastic drama.

I think it will eventually change. It’s not satisfying to simply “ retain “ the trophy. The other thing they could do is make it about holes won so that the team with a lot of 3 and 2 wins ( as opposed to 1up wins) has an advantage. A bit like in football winning the league on goal difference.
