- What was the best deck ever? We started with the 27 Standard decks to win a World Championship, played five rounds of Swiss, and now bring you each match of the Top 8. Andrea Mengucci is Playing Thoralf Severin here and either Siege Rhino or Hazoret could be knocked out of the tournament.

I've been wanting to do this video series forever but the idea behind dedicating so many videos to one idea always seemed simply irresponsible. I am truly thrilled to finally have this recent passion project come to life! I hope it does well!

@pistolsatsean VS live is actually what inspired me to make these videos and made me apply to this job in the first place. They were always great and I'm happy we get to fill that void for some people :)
@@CardmarketMagic The thing I miss the most is that I felt like I had my thumb on the meta, without having to grind (as I am mostly a deckbuilder, and enjoy building more than playing)
I would absolutely love to see weekly gameplay of whatever competitive format here, if you guys can make those videos profitable to produce!

Game 1 honestly felt like it was in the pocket for abzan so much value but it just goes to show how insanely resilient Hazored was even in aggro mode. This is a really great series because decks like Hazored that just pushed every other deck out of the meta were so hard to evaluate on a raw power level, seeing them up against other lists is amazing.
And this is the deck after bannings! It was a real brutaliser
@@percyvile They only hit the dino right I don't remember anything else in this deck getting hit since most of the bannings were kaladesh and energy related.
@@mopanda81 Ramunap Ruins and Ferocidon were both banned. The reach that the ruins gave the decks was unbeatable and people started to innovate and add eldrazi into the sideboard because of the 8 colorless lands. It became very problematic because the khenra coming back gave very good late game. Combined with the land it had staying power. Probably one of the best standard decks of all time
Ramunap red made up lile 6 of the top 8 when it was legal. It was as opressive as hogaak, just not as visibly due to a single playpiece. Sligh was always the deck that would perpetually occupy at least second place, no matter the meta, and amon khet pushed it over the edge to 'would perpetually win, no matter the meta'.
@@egoalter1276 as a lifelong sligh player I've never felt like it was always 2nd. Innistrad for instance was a particularly dark time before RTR with all the thrags and resto angels in the format.
I'd love to see the results from Swiss - I assume the actual games are off the table just because of volume, but having a quick overview of what decks got close, which might have gotten screwed over by matchups, etc. would be interesting.

yes, 100%. I was surprised that prismatic black and abzan control made top 8 honestly. I thought some of the older decks would dominate with the old broken cards. Also, a lot of the 'control' decks had answers specific to their meta that I figured would be a handicap for them.

19:11 definitely cracked me up, shame to see Thoralf got a bit flooded in the second game but that was some great Magic for sure, cannot wait to see more PS: We notice the little things like showing us the Scry at 21:50, I for one very much appreciate the effort you put in to make these videos clear and fun to watch

Hazoret Aggro is one of my favorite decks of all time. I have been trying to adapt this deck for modern and love watching it get played! Can't wait for the rest of the series!

This will be a fascinating series to watch! I feel like the decks from recent sets (i.e. in the last 5 years or so) would be at an advantage over the others due to the drastic shift in power level and gradual erosion of the colour pie during that time, especially post-2020.
Also, I LOVED resolving The Eldest Reborn when it was in standard, so powerful for an uncommon.
The editors have done an absolutely amazing job. Also, I have been wondering what was the best standard deck for year's. This was an amazing video idea I can't wait to see all of them.

Love this idea for a series, I was looking at some of the deck lists from the 90s and I truly want to see them played at least once just to see how they played out as I can't really visualize the games with them. I really liked the Frank Karsten episode where they played the old mono green aggro list for the control list to show how they actually played out.

I really loved Abzan's entire run in standard. The core cards of the deck (particularly Siege Rhino) were so flexible that they could slot just as easily into an aggro build as they could in the control build featured in the video. I played Abzan Aggro at my first ever GP with two copies of Surrak, the Hunt Caller for a bit of spice - Curving a turn 3 Anafenza into a turn 4 Surrak would end games very quickly!

R/B vehicles was the only reason I ever played standard, glad to see it again, cut//ribbons is a personal favorite

Man I remember the guys at the shop would actually talk about this theoretic matchup ALL the time. Hazoret kills Rhinos but dies to Languish and exile effects, Chainwhirler deals with elspeth tokens and weakens Rhinos, Fleecemane Lion trades with Scroungers... the decks both have great game against each other and it was fun to watch.
I love how Andrea says "Ahia" (Italian equivalent of "Ouch") after the dice roll at 2:34
Carl's "hello" at 19:13 was so clear it made me look around like someone had snuck up on me
