Once again, Dave, salmiakki is not "salty liquorice" as in putting table salt into liquorice. The salmiakki flavor comes from ammonium chloride and needs not to be used with liquorice, although often is. And the black color is just the invention of the candy industry and has no real connection to the real color of either liquorice or ammonium chloride.
The deep black colour of liqourice comes obviously from medical charcoal, and i think it has nothing to do with the taste. But one main ingredients, molasses, is quite black or deep brown. So i think that the deal with the colouring is that they wanted to purify the black colour, to make the liqourice look more delicious. And these were my conclusions only, there can be other reasons to the use of charcoal as well.

You should try the Finnish national sport called Kalsarikänni. All you need is underpants (kalsari) and liquor (viina --> känni [drunk]). Kalsarikänni means being drunk alone at home (couch is fine). When you are drunk, you can call to your boss or the other person you hate and tell them what you really think about them. This is also a good solution with Coronavirus.

Salmiakkikossu was originally invented by Jari Sillanpää (famous Finnish tango singer) before he became famous. He was working as a bartender (Viking Line. MS Mariella) and was experiencing blending vodka and candy. “Turkish peppers” (salmiakki candy) made the first “salmiakkikossu” and was a instant hit. The recipe is something like one turkish pepper per one 1cl of vodka (Finlandia). This was looong time ago (30? years?)

I brought some Mnttu from Lativia at Super Alko, tastes just like the mint in the Marianne candy, It is called Minttu Twist Polka. It was very cheap .
