What Breaks a Fast and What Does NOT Break a Fast - The Official Video - Thomas DeLauer
So many people have asked the awesome questions about specific foods breaking a fast or not breaking a fast, so I figured, what the heck, why don't I just lay it out for you. I'm going to list out foods that are fasting-safe, or should I say drinks, and things that are fasting-safe. But, then I'm going to list out things that are no-gos, things that will definitely break a fast. I'm going to give you a little bit of the science, too. Then I'm going to talk about the gray area. What I mean by gray area is there are going to be things that may or may not break a fast. It's still undecided. The jury is still out. I'll give you my honest opinion on it, so you can take it for what it's worth.
But first off, let's go ahead and let's talk about a couple of things that are good to go while you're fasting. First and foremost, we know that good, old-fashioned H2O is good to go. Unless you're doing a dry fast, water is not going to cause a problem. You're good to go. Kind of an obvious one. The next one I want to talk about, green tea. Very powerful, that epigallocatechin-3-gallate, that EGCG, is really powerful. Allows your body to mobilize fats quite a bit better, so it's a very good thing to be drinking while you're fasting. Then, we've got coffee, of course. Coffee will not break a fast as long as it's black. Totally good to go. Again, the caffeine mobilizing fatty acids. You're good there. It's going to help expedite the process of fasting. It's going to help expedite glycogen removal, or should I say, storage, that the carbs and the glycogen and the glucose isn't in your bloodstream anymore. It goes into the muscles. We definitely want that, so that's powerful.
Here's a kind of a weird one. It's going to be most teas, black, green, or whatever, but I have to say this now, certain herbal teas with fruit. You see some herbal teas out there, the have little chunks of apple, they have little chunks of berries that are dehydrated. You're getting the fructose from those fruits, so I would highly recommend staying away from those. That's a no-go.
So then, back to the fasting-safe, now we've got different sodas that I want to talk about. Zevia, for one, I've talked about this in a video. That's a soda that's sweetened with Stevia, so you're good to go there. And, as much as I hate to say this, I'm going to go on the record by saying I don't think that aspartame is good. I don't think it's healthy, but a lot of people ask. Diet Coke, diet sodas, you're going to be okay. Aspartame doesn't technically break a fast. So, you're okay there. I just don't think it's the best thing to do, but I know that a lot of you are wondering that, so I'm going to go ahead and say it.
When we look at any kind of carbonated beverage, you're usually good to go, so I'm just going to say carbonated water, carbonated H2O, sparkling beverages, things like that. People also always ask about vaping, because there's oil, and you're ingesting the vape. Does vaping break a fast? Generally, no. You're not swallowing the oil, you're inhaling it. What I will say is that vape, the nicotine that is usually in vape, just like smoking, affects your electron transport chain. It affects NADH. That's why you get a high from it. That's why you get a buzz. The jury is still a little bit out on whether not not nicotine technically would constitute breaking a fast, but for the sake of the metabolic function of a fast, you're okay.
I'm going to leave this here for now. There might be one or two more that I add, but I want to start going over the things that will break a fast. I already talked about herbal teas that have fruit in them. Now, the big one, guys. MCT oil and powder. I love that stuff and it's great for keto, but it does break a fast. There's still eight calories per gram. Unlike most fats that are nine calories per gram, MCTs only have eight. It's a little bit different. They still are digested. They still elicit a metabolic response. It's still food. It's still calories. If you have a couple of tablespoons of MCT oil, you're still looking at a couple hundred calories. That's definitely not fasting, okay? So, MCT oil does. So does coconut oil. Same kind of thing. You've got to be careful there.

@ThomasDeLauer Since I am only few months short from turning 50years old replaying your videos to understand the awesome science and common sense info on your videos over a month has improved body/mind health, energy and body shape. That being said a couple of questions: since I learned from your videos that is after 16 hours that fasting give over the top life-changing results and, also from your videos, you explain that instead of eating soon post workout you find that eating a while longer after physical exercise is the best, I am starting to workout at night to break my fast around 11am the next day; am I okay in following these methods? and last, if I understood one of your videos correctly before eating lunch with a little carb in it, you recommend to have a little bit of fat without carb so that the body re-start turning fat into energy rather than storing it, is that right? and with the bone broth alone am I getting that fat to break my fast with and a hour later then have the meal with some carbs in it; correct? I hope you don't mind me squeezing in like 3 questions in one comment.
What about Pickles?
What about l carnitine?????
Does “no sugar” energy drinks break a fast? Ultra Monsters, AlaniNu’s, etc?
Do I trust the guy who lost 100 lbs and is ripped af? Or do I trust the know-it-alls in the comment section? hmmm
Lol agree
Cory Cool Dangerous Agee
Comments for sure
Lol thats a damn good point!
🤔 hmm that’s a hard one lol
Could you please make a more in-depth video about which vitamins, minerals, and amino acids break a fast? Also, which ones would have to be taken during one's eating phase versus which ones are okay to take during one's fast?
Finally, CBD oil and marijuana was mentioned in relation to fasting, thanks 🙏
So vaping marijuana won't break a fast?
Marijuana gives you the the munchies
To answer your question: yes, eating dog does break a fast
Damn it 🤦🏾♀️
That god someone cleared that up for me he never touched on that at all!
Good old kagogi.
He does not say anything about eating the dog
Does melatonin break a fast ?
The most knowledgable person ive ever seen on fasting and health, and very easily understandable teaching! Thank you bro!
Exodarion I appreciate that!! Thank you for tuning in!
@@ThomasDeLauerOfficial what about vanilla extract? Like a couple drops in coffee. Does that break a fast. YOURE AWESOME & INFORMATIVE BTW!!!!
This was golden! I was using collagen in my black coffee after 3 weeks of IF and my weight loss slowed and I couldnt figure out what it was. Thanks!
Christian James + so how do you incorporate your collagen now? I need to know cuz I take it for my knee tendons...
Dianne Oehman I will now take it only on refeed days. :) Not daily in my coffee. :)
Christian James + Oh...wow!...you do some serious fasting! I'm thrilled if I'm able to do one meal a day!....I wish I had that fortitude!👍🏼
Thomas, thank you for all you do on YT !!! I’m getting back to fasting and getting into keto…vegan keto actually. I’m a vegan for 6 years but I was getting very confused and never knew what I really should eat. Keto is new to me but I love it so far…I’m learning sooooo much from you !! Your passion for healthy body is very contagious!! Please keep up the fantastic work that you do. Don’t get discourage by any mean comments…sending you and your family hugs and lots of love 💜🌺💜🌸
Thank youuuuuu! So helpful! I'm on day 4 of a fast and have been having acv, black coffee and green tea. Good to know that I'm not ruining the fast :)
How about fresh ginger steeped in hot water, then strained. Does that break a fast?
Protein powder grey area? I think that was meant for No-Go.
Definetly! I think it was just a mistake he didn´t notice at the moment.
Protein will break Autophagy.
He did say they will definitely break the fast, but he mistakenly wrote it on the grey area group.
yea that definitely breaks a fast
he wouldnt fight about it just stay behind the screen
Thanks Tom. I'm doing keto again this year and really doing it properly thanks to all of your help. I'm on week 5 of Keto and oh my god it is working. My weight isn't moving on the scales yet but I have dropped a seize in clothes already. I only follow you and it's working. I was unsure about stevia. Thanks so much for all your amazing videos. I've been watching you for two years now. Keep doing your amazing videos.
Cool to see that Weedborn has new products.
Respect for not avoiding the sensitive subject of marijuana .
max hunter
I agree.
Now neuroscientist Tamas Horvath, of Yale University in New Haven, and colleagues report in Nature that nerve cells called pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons play a key role in this process. POMC had generally been thought to promote satiation, but Horvath's team found that POMC neurons in the brain release not just a hunger-suppressing hormone, but also one that promotes appetite.
Which hormone is secreted is regulated by a protein in the cells' mitochondria, structures that regulate energy levels. When the CB1 receptor is activated, this mitochondrial protein induces POMC to switch from secreting the substance that suppresses gorging to one that supresses it.
Both β-endorphin and α-MSH are in fact derived, via cleavage, from the same precursor protein-POMC, after which the neurons are named. For this reason, Horvath had suspected long ago that POMC neurons might both stimulate and suppress appetite. However, he dropped this early theory after an abundance of experimental evidence suggested otherwise. Indeed, even when β-endorphin itself is deleted from POMC neurons in mice, said Cone, you get “animals that are hyperphagic and obese.”
I think an argument can be made that, as long as one can overcome the munchies, smoking marijuana should actual help fasting. If your body is saying it is hungry then wouldn't it consume what is available?
max hunter not sensitive anymore, it’s 2018.
Vicious Cycle You'd be surprised.
What about meds? Like aspirin or antibiotics?
Dietsoda's do increase insulin. A study was done in men harvesting sugar canes. Some got coke, some got dietcoke. Both groups harvested more sugar canes after the drink, but the latter group had a major crash and got less productive. The theory behind it is that the pancreas starts releasing insulin as soon as the sugary taste is noted. The insuline lowers the (low) present bloodsugar because the body is expecting a replenishment. When the expected sugar doesnt come in, bloodsugar has crashed which causes fatigue and cravings. You could say that this does not affect the fast as long as you withstand your cravings, but it does effect the way the body reacts. The increase in glucose causes an initial decrease in glucagon which is the hormone that helps mobilize fatty acids and glycogen. Afterwards, glucagon will spike due to the low blood sugar, but you end up feeling pretty bad in between. This being said; Isn't it better not to drink dietsoda's?
And another question: I dont like coffee so i take caffeine in pillform. It has a gelatine capsule. Does 1 really break the fast? If i take the capsule at 12, when i break my fast, i wont be able to sleep.
so, what about sucralose and stevia then? would it cause the same reaction because they are sweet?
@@KittyLovesGlover I'd say yes.
There are lots of new studies coming out that shows the artificial sweeteners kills different types of gut bacterias, and they are thinking that is responsible for the reason why people who consume diet things don't loose weight.
When I drank diet soda, I found it made me more hungry and tempted to eat. So I would avoid them.
I love his intelligence, speech and positive vibes. Such a well-educated man sharing his knowledge with us. I appreciate ❤
Ground spices? Such as ginger, cinnamon, cayenne pepper...?
Bella Santana i asked about ginger he said if its below 1/4 teaspoon its ok
kick ass preworkouts i mean if teas are okay less than 1/4 tsp should be fine too i guess
"Despite having a minimal effect on blood sugars, both aspartame and stevia raised insulin levels higher than even table sugar." Jason Fung - The Obesity Code
His source for this claim is:
Anton SD et al. Effects of stevia, aspartame, and sucrose on food intake, satiety, and postprandial glucose and insulin level. Appetite. 2010 August; 55(1):37-43
Dr. Fung also points out that there are conflicting studies on this and that at times, you will need to determine who paid for the study to help determine its validity. (Not a direct quote, just my interpretation of what he wrote in his book.)
mommalisa52560 www.marksdailyapple.com/artificial-sweeteners-insulin/
Here it quotes multiple studies and concludes that aspartame doesn't affect insulin levels.
Mr Knarf, will check it out. thanks
mommalisa52560 My husband is a type 1 diabetic. He drinks a lot of diet pop and aspartame definitely does not cause blood sugar to go up.
CATHY NORDAHL
But what about insulin? I have also noticed that my blood sugars were pretty stable with those sweetners, but possibly a larger problem are the spikes in insulin. also, I have cravings with all of those sweetners.
mommalisa52560 i just did a 14 day fast, drank coke zero and zevia and water.
I lost 35 pounds in 14 days. Amd in the last 6 days i lost 3 inches off my waist.
So in my case... Those dont break my fast.
What about ginger? Like with your acv and lemon
Mary Nsaidoo-Storph need an answer ASAP
Dr. Fung disagrees..... there’s 2 types of fasting (weight loss or autophagy) so....... you can do BPC IN MODERATION but for autophagy ZERO calories. This is because mct, coconut oil, HWC won’t cause a rise in insulin ....
Hi Karla do u know if aloe Vera gel breaks the fast?
@mehazad rahman what ?
@Karla Maria
There's calories in fat you are making me laugh
It will just a reduced or blunted respond. Its not true that insulin is at zero when fasting anyway. It's just reduced. Even if you have 30 calories or so you'll enter the fasting state pretty quick.
The mct powder I use is only a half scoop which is 35 calories...is that okay?
Braking a fast with Multivitamins? Omega 3’s? Calcium? Vitamin D? Minerals? Capsules with gelatin?
I want to know this as well.
The oils may break the fast but trace minerals maybe not especially if they are in liquid/ionic form but just a guess i'm not 100% sure myself. Just take D and Omegas with meals and the rest with meals you don't need them as your body adapts to fasting you load up the night before and get daily sun way better than vitamin D.
Multivitamins at least the ones that I have bought would be a no go, they contain carbs from fruit concentrates, and apparently gelatin carries non essential amino acids namely glycine, glutamic acid, proline, and alanine (I looked it up) so gelatin would be ok since it doesn’t carry leucine which Tom mentioned causes a spike.
Capsules have usually carriers which can break fasting, so it's better to use supplements in forms of pure powders. Omega 3's are basically fats, so can break fasting. Calcium, minerals - don't break fast (if in "pure" forms). Vitamins are often made in capsules with other carriers like fats or forms of sugars. Gelatin is basically protein, so if BCAA makes little spikes in insulin level then it might too.
I've been wondering about Vaping. I have Vaped for 9 years after smoking for 20. I love Vaping. It has literally saved my life.My asthma has disappeared and I get a pulmonary lung exam done by my doctor every year and she says I have the lungs of a non-smoker. I do get juice in my mouth (called Spit Back) and I vape a lot. However I've been in Ketosis for a few weeks now. So I agree Vaping doesn't knock you out of Ketosis. However I feel like I get my sugar rush from the juice. So it's a win win😁 Also down 40lbs in 3 months. Am off Diabetic meds and my A1C is under 7😆. All my cholesterol numbers are in a healthy rangs now as well.
Again thanks for your input on the subject.
Way to go Steven 👏🏻💪🏻
Fellow vaper here too. 5 years strong 💪
Congrats!!! 😁
More videos like this one please.
The more I listen to Thomas the more I like and agree with his teachings. This guys thinking aligns with my feelings on fasting but he adds for me an educated well taught understanding as to why I feel these suggestions and recommendations are best for fasting.
I really appreciate this guys knowledge and his presentation to explain and inform!
Thank you Thomas!
It all makes perfect sense to me 👍🏼
My favorite non-caffeinated tea is Celestial Seasonings Cinnamon Apple Spice.
The ingredients are:
Cinnamon, hibiscus, chamomile, natural cinnamon and apple flavors with other natural flavors, roasted chicory, orange peel and roasted carob. I bet this probably doesn't break a fast. But I wonder what the hormonal impact of the ingredients is.
It would be interesting to watch a video on teas and flavored beverages and their effects. What dosage of tea would cause a material effect. Even green tea is suppose have a negative effect on test.
Lol what are you doing writing on Jeff Cavalier’s chalkboard? ❤️
Does gum break fast? Stevia sweetened?
What about omega 3 (oil fish) and glycine / malate magnesium (capsules) supplements?
fish oil breaks a fast
Phew, so glad chocolate didnt make the "No Go" list. Nom nom 🍫
HAHAHAHA
Yep nor did cheeseburger
I think the dog on the right breaks a fast...
his right or the viewers right?! :D
I don't think it matters what dog you eat, they would both break a fast.
Depends on how fast the dogs are.
Blake Bauman it's cleary the one on the left!
😂😂😂
Incredibly informative. I had several questions and stumbled across your video. Your explanations are concise and I feel more empowered in the decisions I'm making during my IF. Thank you!
as a biochem/bio-science major I appreciate this info being consolidated into a concise video so I don't have to go all over the place looking for it. Citations would be awesome though, but I am a little obsessive. Thanks again!
I heard coffee can raise insulin which makes the fat burning in fasting slower can you do a video on that and perhaps measure your blood level before and after drinking plain coffee? Thanks for the vid btw🤗💖
sara c hmm I’ve always heard caffeine increase fight/ flight and can become a performance enhancer because it releases FFAs for energy. Not sure how fasting changes this
Black coffee doesn't raise insulin, it raises cortisol, so technically it doesn't break your fast. Cortisol and Insulin are the 2 hormones that store fat & prevent fat burning. That's why there's a lot of people who recommend water first thing in the morning and waiting for breakfast to have your coffee.
ruclips.net/video/iAv-1UHHjeg/видео.html
If cortisol increases with coffee intake, wouldn’t it be counterproductive to drink? I thought cortisol inhibits fat loss.
does breathing break a fast? answer fast pls, cant hold my breath much more
if you breath from your nose no but from the mouth yes
Millennial vs. The World What language is it you’re speaking there..? 🤨
😂😂
Wezz - He’s not speaking, he’s typing, but I’d wager the audio version isn’t much different from the texted version. Give him a break, that poor Millennial is versus the whole world and there appears to be a long line of complaints.
..only if you're breathing while standing next to a Cinnabon
Interesting to see ACV in the gray area section. Even if there may be a single calorie in ACV, isn't there typically 5 calories in a single cup of black coffee? Which shouldn't be enough to impact a fast.
Thomas, I'm wondering if you could make a video discussing the best time to drink ACV, in relation to controlling glucose. E.g. before or after a carb heavy meal? At the start or end of a fast?
CJ Sheets yaaaah... same with stevia, it's not calorie free and DOES have carbs. I think he's mistaken...
@@chantalbaxter9126
Stevia doesn't have carbs. It's carb-free and calorie-free. If it's mixed with erythitol or maltodextrin, then it won't be carb-free but that isn't the stevia adding the carbs.
27 of fasting and I just finished watching this to realize that I’ve been having my coffee with a little sugar free coffee mate because I thought anything less than 50 calories was good to go 🤦♀️
50 calories? No way! Here I was.....worried about my apple cider vinegar, haha
I do the exact same thing. The sugar fee coffee mate. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. I’ve been having it and still see results from my fast.
How much do you lose?
so a dirty fast which is different than a pure fast does allow up to 50 calories as it shouldn't spike your insulin levels soo much but check the sugar content on the coffee mate it's usually like 8gr of sugar which is much more likely to throw you out of a fast than the 35 calories coffee mate has
Give up the coffee and do a true fast to feel the benefits.
Breakfast will break a fast.
andyottito1 no sh*t
Really fast 😋
andyottito1 Cause it's literally break-fast!
You idios, anyottito was just kidding around. Sheesh.
andyottito1 haha hence where the name came from
I found this video 17 hrs in and I was struggling with just water. Now its water, black coffee, and green tea. Time to smash this 72 hour fast and reset my immune system!
Didn't make the 72 hour fast. I figured out I broke my fast brushing my teeth and using mouthwash. This stuff is hard, lots of preparation required.
@@PontoLyone no you didn't. If you were doing a hard dry fast yes, but you were not so it's okay. Thomas has done a video about that.
@@yordanos2739 I just need to know what I'm allowed to do and what I'm not allowed to do in a 72 hour fast to get those immune system benefits. I was so anxious 44 hours into a 72 hour fast about whether I broke my fast or not I just gave up.
Good for you!!
But what about tide pods?!?!
Kidding, love these videos. Keep 'em coming!
Does Xyla sweetner break a fast? Thanks!
If it's a teenager that's doing tide pods, then they're not breaking a fast.
What about chewing gum? Which types are safe to chew during a fast?
i'll suppose with no sugar on it will not break the fast
i assume the ones with any carb or sugar values on it will break a fast
Dr Berg said creamer, mct oil and bp coffee don’t break a fast.
How in the world is a protein powder a grey area but yet bone broth is a no go? Protein powders should definitely be a no go.
Dawn McKenzie I think he made a mistake there. He actually said it was a no-go, right? But while he said that, he wrote it down in the wrong column because that was the one he was working on.
Bernardo Sutter I agree, I think he made a mistake in the board.
Dawn McKenzie he put it in the grey area because some do and some don’t depending on the ingredients.
Lady's Things you're stupid. The point is to avoid calories. It's definitely not in the gray area.
The dogs look so done with you 😂
2 Questions: 1. Does having a couple slices of lemon in my hot water break the fast? And 2. Does have a sprinkle if cinnamon in my coffee break the fast?
Thanks Thomas
Maybe better do a pop-up in the video regarding the error of putting Protein Powder in the grey area🙃
I was just going to ask about that, I mean he does say that it breaks a fast, and honestly it IS obvious, but seeing how he put it on the gray area made me wonder.
Thank you so much Tom for the info. I'm glad you straightened it out concerning MCT oil, coconut oil, bullet proof etc. now I can really hone in on my IF.
Don't artificial sweeteners spike insulin as well but slightly
Thank you for including cannabis in this discussion! As the industry evolves, so does the science, esp. learning exactly what makes us feel the way we do. Terpenes are found in ALL plants, and they are specifically responsible for feelings of euphoria, energy, relaxation, hunger, etc., aaand specific ones have even been known to suppress appetite. As a post-bacc Neurobiology labrat whom joined the professional side of cannabis a few years ago, it really is amazing to finally see the science behind this force of a plant.
Caution on edibles:. Our bodies breakdown and digest the endocannabinoids in MJ much more completely than smoking/vaping, and take much longer to kick in. Exercise restraint and moderation when consuming. Remember, you can always eat more, but you can't eat less. Also exercise caution when medicating with concentrates- oil, distillate, vape, wax, etc: these are 'concentrated' mediums of THC, producing a stronger effect. I personally recommend flower to start, seeing as how you get the full spectrum benefits of the plant rather than THC alone.
I could go on, but by all means if anyone sees this and has questions, don't hesitate! =)
Does taking vitamins and supplements break a fast?
When he began the video talking about the dogs, I was like what?😂
Ok a few questions, diet soda specifically diet coke doesn't effect insulin? Because I hear from Dr. Fung first soda can cause a insulin spike greater then sugar.
Second the items in your ok list won't effect me achieving autophagy?
Third is a friend started a water fast but with coconut water included and from anything I read coconut water has calories. So what do you think.
Right now I do water fasts and if it's long fasts a week or more I do a dry fast during a water fast of a day. Thanks!
Thank you SO MUCH Thomas! You are really helping me improve my diet.
Thomas you need to be on a Joe Rogan podcast
YES. I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING
Rip joe rogan
No, a different form of fasting on the podcast and not about inducing autophagy.
Doesn't he just have weird alt-righters on these days?
S11N Yas!
I just watched a video that showed testing on heavy cream, mct oil, and butter. None of them broke a fast! So who to believe?
I think it depends on what your goals are. I noticed that clear chicken broth doesn't seem to really raise my blood sugar. I think i could lose weight sipping it but it would probably knock me out of some of the really neat benefits of fasting like autophagy and increased production of human growth hormone. It may well be that they are both correct but Thomas is just hardcore.
I did too. It was a medical doctor so I am going with that.
Heavy cream doesn’t break a fast I’ve heard
Hi Thomas, I was wondering about all my multivitamin say take in the morning. Is this something that can break my fast for example fish oils, magnesium, potassium, etc etc. Thank you
nfpaezinvesting ya me too
They can and will end your fast. In fact, some can even kick you out of ketosis.
I personally do IF and a fairly strict keto.
Every other day, in my eating window, I take my supplements.
Give it a go.
nfpaezinvesting omega3 is a fish oil which is a lipid that breaks the fast.. not sure about the minerals such as magnesium though!
Bobby Sweeney I also do I.F with strict keto and literally feel amazing and have had some great results :)
nfpaezinvesting I've wondered the same. Great question.
Bummer! I was beside myself of hunger yesterday so i made some Coconut coffee this morning to feel less hungry.(I do OMAD in the evening)
But it makes sense now why I am such a long time getting in to ketosis because I have drunken coconut coffee some days..
There is soo much to understand in the Keto diet! Thank god for RUclips!
What about cinnamon powder? Adding a dash with my coffee in the morning typically less than a teaspoon worth
Most spices and herbs are fine on a fast. Cinnamon is fine
Added benefit .. cinnamon can help with insulin resistance..
Can you please discuss what vitamins will or will not break a fast ???????
vitamins will not....by this i mean if you are on vitamin tabs
Good video as always dude, very informative, felt a bit guilty for having a Diet Coke last night when I was in my fast but now you’ve put my mind at ease a bit. Been watching for quite a while now but I’ve only started to truly implement your methods over the past ten weeks. I’ve lost 12.8Kg’s so far. And I’d just like to say thanks Thomas for all the awesome videos. Take care, Craig.
Thank you very much for this easy to follow, practical information. Much appreciated 🙏🏻🌷
Just stick with water and green tea during your fast and you might live longer
The 1st thing needed is a clear definition of a fast. It seems there are now thousands of things people refer to as a fast.
It's like when you need a blood test and they tell you to fast. Nothing but water is allowed. That is a true fast.
Linda L a true fast is a og with no water either
at least 60mph
Not eating
Shouldn’t the protein powder be in the no-go column? Like you said, it definitely breaks a fast cause it’s still food.
Love watching your videos, you upload great content. What sugar free gum would you recommend for fasting. I am a weirdo about fresh breath and work around other people. Thanks for any insight you have.
I hate to tell ya, but chewing breaks a fast. Brush teeth or mouthwash
Energy drink name BANG has bcaa but zero calories and carbs, my question is if is a GO or a NO GO.
i think he means the BCAA's themselves will break it. hmm
yes plz answer this. Because i need to know if ive been wasting my time doing "fasted cardio". because i drink one of these before each "fasted" workout.
i need to know if ive actually been breaking my fast before i work out
He said in the vid, bcaa's gonna break your fast
because of how Branch Chain Amino Acids are broken down, he considers them to be a "no-go". @5:21 - leucine causes an insulin spike to break it down. he speaks about it very clearly. very very clearly. lol
Thank you so much for this. I've watched a lot of these "does it break a fast" videos and I think that this one by far is the clearest and most concise. I really appreciate all that you do. You're videos are very helpful and I think it's generous of you to take the time to research and create them for our benefit. Also, I adore your dogs! They're absolutely beautiful. Australian Shepherds?
Huh, my 5th grade teacher was already doing IF and I never noticed. When he retired the year after, he was gifted an entire truck of Pepsi since he bought and drank so much of it over his decades of teaching. He was just past 60 years old back then and was still very active, running alongside some of the kids during track and field as well, and only now do I realize why he drank the white Pepsi can in the morning and the blue Pepsi can in the afternoon.
Curious about essential oils and if they trigger an insulin response? I’m new to intermittent fasting and based on what I’ve researched so far, am thinking citrus oils would actually be helpful? Thank you for your time and great video!
I have the same question. I ingest 1-2 drops in 40 oz water during my fasted state. Does it affect insulin levels/break a fast?
Hahah was gonna ask you about weed before the video even ended but then I realized I should watch the rest and of course you covered it.
Good video, really informative. Thanks :)
Does Pink Himalayan Salt break a fast? Also what about toothpastes (is a significant amount absorbed in the mouth, enough to cause a metabolic response)?
Salt does not break a fast
Use a water pik
I've been constantly pondering that as well
Aspartame (diet soda) is an amino acid so while it is non-caloric it will likely inhibit autophagy if that is one of the reasons you’re doing a longer fast- fasting has actually help me rid myself of my diet soda addiction
Im kind of a purist and stick to nothing but water but these things are still interesting to know thanks
Two Fit Docs did a physical test checking ketones, insulin etc. They checked MCT, coconut oil, butter etc. Any artificial sweetener caused a spike, mct and butter did not. In fact BPC had an effect of helping the ketones. Just sayin’ check it out.
Jamia Burcham I saw that test! Now I hear Mct brakes it! Oh my! So many opinions! Geeeze!
It still is calories so it stops the autophagy effect so yes it breaks it
@@Acularis Stopping autophagy and breaking fast are two different things. You can still be in the fasted state and have no autophagy.
What about, vitamin supplements, calcium tablets and omega 3 oil ? also does anyone have a recommendation for a preworkout that doesn't break fasting?
Raymond Williams oil I think definitely would break a fast/ not sure about vitamins and calcium I think it could all just depend on the ingredients
You're awesome, thank you for all your work. Keto changed my life and will change more in the future, super excited about it! 💯✨😊
Loved this video!..how about sugarfree gum...2g sugar alcohol
no go
Very informative....I was disappointed to see BCAA's....as breaking a fast.
Your use of the white board is getting much better. You are learning well from Dr. Berg, grasshopper.
Mrlr J but the green color though was hard to see
Hey there. Thanks for all your great videos.
Would some vanilla ice cream on top of a chocolate brownie get me out of ketosis?
IAmAgainst - Funny
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
IAmAgainst nah
no. please have all the ice cream and brownies you want. guaranteed instant ketosis for sure! 👌🏽
what about zero calories and zero sugar energy drinks???
Water_Tea_coffee_AVC_Lemon
Ok noted
Today at 6 pm I will be done with the 72 fasting. However being a type 2 diabetic, I needed the bone broth couple of cups when I feel the need cuz my body is telling me, with my blood sugar . I drink coffee, green tea , alkaline water . I regularly checking my blood sugar, the first night I was kinda scared, I might not wake up cuz of low blood sugar. So I found out the bone broth was my hope to get through, I needed it. 2 cups when my blood sugar is coming down too low. So happy about making through tonite at 6 pm 72 hrs fasting with bone broth two cups as my body needed it.oh with fresh lemon juice from my tree, no sugar and I’m doing my cardio, stretch exercises everyday.
Wouldn’t La Croix break a fast because it has natural flavors in it?
They have fruity flavors similar to the herbal teas.
Fruit flavor does not necessarily mean it came from fruit. Look up specific ingredients some fruit flavors are from artificial sources.
If it says zero calories and zero carbs per serving its fine.
Thank you Thomas!! I have a question though,
What pre workout supplement you would recommend if you are fasting and in Keto ?
Thanks!
Damn another classic dropped by Thomas Delauer
Thank you!! Can you have a bit of honey in the tea?? And what about juice of ginger or even powder with lemon for tea and what about mint tea and herb teas like turmeric, cinnamon powders strained for tea. I truly look forward to hearing from you!!
What about vitamins and minerals supplements?
Vitamins break a fast, minerals(at least electrolytes) do not.
Shouldnt really be taking in vitamins and minerals without food anyways for absorption, so theres that
True but it is important to get electrolytes in during a fast because if you are going 12-16 hours on just water, youre going to be urinating a lot, dumping a lot of sodium and potassium, it is good to replenish those.
I should rephrase : remove minerals from there. Really only vitamins need food to absorb. Minerals dont require any food to absorb. Some Lemon Sea salt water in the morning goes a long way
Marco thanks for the correction. That's correct and in fact, historically we've gotten many of our minerals from the water we drink (and anyone who drinks well water still does)
Just wondering: does turmeric tea will break the fast?
I think that falls under the category of herbal tea that doesn't contain fruit
what about vitamins in pill form, D3, Omega 3?
MrMixCro Vitamins and Minerals are not digested.
Hey Thomas Delauer does Cacao break the fast? I like to add it to my coffee.
hey! have you seen any article with regards to this? Thanks
What about salt? Like a small amount in the water ill drink throughout my fast.
Yeah, I was pretty curious about this a little while back so I did some looking around and it seems to be safe for a fast:

In another video, Thomas speaks about the benefits of adding a little salt to your water when fasting.
Does unsweetened almond milk in my coffee break a fast? I use stevia but prefer unsweetened almond milk too.
kimmy kakes does it have carbs?
Unsweetened almond milk has 30 calories for one cup and one gram carb. It will break a fast
Also, nutrition labels are deceptive. Companies are allowed to round down. If it says less than one carb I’m saying one carb because they are not honest about exact amounts. Also they play with serving size per container. One cookie u think is 24 carbs is actually 48 because In the serving size it says half cookie. Everybody knows nobody is eating a half cookie or thinking a serving is half cookie. Be mindful of that. (Cookie just example. This applies to all food. Be proficient in reading labels
What would be your response to someone like Dr. Eric Berg, another foremost expert on fasting, that has a video that says that bone broth, ACV, and erythritol IS all fasting safe?
you mean eric berg the non medical doctor (chiropractor)
I've watched many of his videos on various subjects and don't believe he is an actual expert on anything.
Fair, but then you have to question Thomas as they have done video collaborations together.
Y'all are killing me here with all the "not a real doctor" and shit. Listen to who you choose and see who helps you more. You don't have to be a medical doctor of anything to be an expert. Just ask Thomas...a real non-medical doctor himself.
Dara Jones so you believe the guy that says diet soda is safe?
Hey Tom thanks for these videos. I'd love to know whether fresh ginger steeped in hot water breaks a fast. Also if liquorice and peppermint tea breaks a fast.
Do you have any video explaining WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS in your body when you break a fast? I mean, what´s the impact of breaking a fast when compared to eating the same amount of calories without fasting?
Go to Dr. Berg's videoes. Basically, you spike the fat-creating hormone insulin everytime you eat. You want to minimilize this hormone in order to activate the hormones that burn fat.

What about taking a vitamin tablet in the morning? Or fish oil pills?
Yes breaks the fast
The gelatin capsules are made with sugar. Just research how the specific pills you take are made of.
what about ACV AND LEMON JUICE?
NVM,it's in the gray area. Thanks for the video
I would want to know if these fast-breakers interfere with autophagy.
I know for a fact that coconut oil does improve autophagy… I have lose more weight because of my coconut oil in my coffee every morning it helps enter ketosis faster and the liver can keep sleeping since it is transformed in energy directly in your intestines ;) go for Coco if you wanna improve auto phagy
