Sh-101, such an underrated synth! Its the first analog I tried as a youth, in a musical instrument store in Sweden sometime early 90's. I played for hours, til closing time. :)
Incredible. I think the absence of a Grundig is the only reason it's not indistinguishable. You are a wizard! Can I request Sixtyniner, or Aphex Twin Flim or #3?
I've been messing around with this on TAL Bassline plugin. It's nearly there, I just can't set the Env to Gate + Trig. Really appreciate the work you've put into this.
I have the pay version of TAL and it does allow Gate + Trig. I was able to get the exact sound. I have also tried Roland's VST of the SH-101 and it is terrible.
Fantastic patch. One question - was this performed on a 101? I believe the 101 has a max 100 steps (6.25 bars). This sequence is 8 bars long. Maybe it was done on a 202? OR - Sequenced via CV/Gate from a 202 playing a 101. Thoughts?
Mitchell Brown Yes it was the SH-101. Keep in mind that BOC had a modern reel to reel with punch in recording multitrack and other ways to sync. There are many ways they could have easily recorded it, including simply playing it live.
Little bit too much pitch modulation, not enough noise... maybe a bit too bright. Pretty close but I dunno. Here's my attempt soundcloud.com/dan-moffat/roygbiv/s-i793X
brilliant ! can you explain with more details how i connect roland sh 101 with roland sync box ? and then roland sync to soundcard? then to ableton using internal clock how it is exactly? kind regards
You hook the roland sh101 cv/gate inputs , to the roland sync box, then the roland sync box midi input, to your soundcard midi output. going into abeltons preference, go to midi, click the midi inputs and outputs on in abelton.
You've got the basic idea, but a few mistakes as well. The second note is wrong (meant to be a B - not an A). Also, the intensity of the Filter Envelope is either too much, or the Decay too short. Also, the Attack is too quick, needs to be a bit slower. Finally, the supporting piano's second chord isn't meant to be an F# Minor, but a B Major, played against the overall F# Minor melody.
Behringer has MS-1, a fairly accurate clone of the SH-101. I'm getting the hang of it now. I hear TAL Bassline 101 is a quite good software version too.
This is one of the greatest videos I've come across on RUclips. Instant sub! Look forward to hearing more of your work.

quadraverb
As always your recreations are so on point.
Best video on this topic I have found. Thanks! I don't have an SH-101, but I am eager to try this on the TAL Bassline 101 VST.
Great observation about the PWM.
Need to hear this band. Sounds fantastic.
I can't think of better synth music than Boards of Canada
Thanks for this video. Just got an MS-1 and this works very well! Thanks for sharing this.
Good tutorial. Copied your patch sheet into my Behringer MS-101 and it's identical apart from having to dial back the glide a little.
Awesome. I pre-ordered a MS-101 in blue but they are not out yet.
@@Digiphex Good choice. Received my blue one 2 weeks ago (UK). The colour is really good btw

Looks like I'll need to upgrade to the paid version. Thanks again!
Sounds very good - just like the original track.
Superb video! Thank you!
This is great! I was able to dial in the same sound on my SH-01A. Very nice.
Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet
I'm using the TAL Bassline 101, lets see how close I can get!
So good!
Fantastic patch.

My word that synth lead is something special.
The lead sound I made from my Arp modular system.
That's cool. Surely it can be achieved without hardware?
amazing Digi!
Holy shit this is great
chune to 432 Hz!
(really)
also helps to use a quadraverb
Any specific setting's for the Quadraverb ?
Love your intro. Can something similar be done in the SH-101/MS-101?
Yes.
Little bit too much pitch modulation, not enough noise... maybe a bit too bright. Pretty close but I dunno. Here's my attempt soundcloud.com/dan-moffat/roygbiv/s-i793X
Not sure they modulated the original with noise but it gives yours that crinkled up cassette tape sound. Very nostalgic indeed.
It's just adding noise to the mix rather than modulating with it. You can hear it as the filter opens up on the higher notes.
@smacksmashen this guy nailed it. great work
not bad but def not "nailed"
did you use sh101 too?
please more

Glad to hear it. Thanks for the comments.
Is this the best or is there any other ones that can replicate it? (I dont wanna spend a ton of money)

@@crnkmnky thanks chief
What kind of synth do you use for your short intro tune?
Roland JX-3P.
is it possible to make smth on BS2?
sounds doable. does Bass Station have square waves with adjustable pulse width?
@@crnkmnky sure. two oscillators and one sub
