Yeah man! I got the SH-01A and while I know it’s not the same as the orig, I am excited to follow along with you on this one. I’ve been very satisfied with the sound I’ve gotten out of the 01-A and the fact you can do pre-sets, polyphony and take it across the country with you are all things that make me happy. I’ve got that Roygbiv bass line programmed in.
Love your videos Marc. The thing I'd love to hear explained is how the 101 and Juno-6 etc divide out a sub oscillator from one oscillator. And also how the circuits mix wave forms within a single oscillator.
I know how they sound and function, but not how they're physically generated.
Basically, in cases like these, the oscillator generates a single waveform that is output. Then, there are wave shapers that change that waveform into other waveforms.
Sub oscillators are created with dividers. If you divide a frequency in half, you get the frequency that is an octave lower than the current frequency. So, the output from the oscillator can also be "divided" to achieve an output that is an octave, or two octaves, etc. lower.
Perfect. Thanks for explaining it!
the juno-6 series cleared up so much for me, basic synthesis-wise. really looking forward to this one.
Great video! I've been enjoying my SH-101 for years. Wonderful machine.
Haha, when you were showing the PWM I was thinking "now I know why Nick Batt loves PWM" then you said "Undoubtedly loved by Nick Batt". Twin souls, man.
I personally always use these synths (software and hardware) to quickly give me a rough idea of what synth sound my song needs (waveform/envelope/modulation)-wise because of its simplicity and interface, and I can then move onto a more complex synth to find the exact sound. Ironically, I mostly end up using the 101 sound in the end. There's just something about it.
Very well conveyed walk and talk through of the sh 101.
There is something about early 80s to mid pwm on thr likes of the junos,sh and jupiters that i really love , you can go from light and majestic to straight up growling and rude !!!. 👊👊. Look foward to more.
Your 101 looks so brand new 👍😮
This is great! Ive got an SH-01A that i need to get to grips with properly.
It's really not bad for Digital huh? :]
My biggest complaint is that I can't wall power it & Keyboard control it simultaneously :[
...certainly no gripes about the Sound. It's *NOT* Analogue. But it really is the next best thing!
Caalamus, Actually you can work the right phone charger. I have an MX-1 mixer, so it's the same principle.
You what now?
I think you may have misunderstood me.
Hopefully Behringer will actually be releasing a clone of this.
Roland already cloned this. Getting one.
Michael Lyle the Roland version is a digital emulation of this.
The 01a is pretty impressive for Digital. Much more of a "recreation" than an "emulation". But yes, Analogue please!
...if memory serves me, there was some weird & cryptic Video of a girl playing what appeared to be a Behringer 101 clone.
Fingers crossed ey?
are you clairvoyant?
The Roland SH-01a also has CV and Trigger jacks to connect to other gear and take you into the Eurorack world.
2:18 Maybe you can confirm this on a real 101, but I think the keyboard follow changes with the transpose. So with the KYBD slider turned up, FREQ at say 50%, playing the same note at L+8', M+16', and H+32' you'll hear the same note gets brighter sounding as you transpose up.
Nick Batt, the Patron Saint of PWM.
He's fast becoming a Mémé :]
For a second I got him confused with Mike Batt and was expecting to hear the theme from The Wombles.
I see that you have the mod grip as well. I don't still have it, but this was the first synth I bought back in I want to say 1986. I remember taking the mod wheel and taping it into the full "On/Forward" position. The main bender controller would pitch bend down almost 2 octaves, like the mod grip was "Adding" to what ever the bender lever was doing. More pitch bend up or down, but I don't think it did the same to the filter. The filter was just maxed open or close.
Very great channel here ! Thx for making that informativ videos ... Very good :)
Nick Batt reference understood. :) LOL
Lovely lovely lovely
I love the SH101. I parted with my first one regrettably and will not part with my second/current one. However, they are going for entirely too much money these days.
tritonrecordings Agreed, and same here. I picked up my first in the late 90s for $400, and my second 2 years ago for $1300. What's funny, is that the most recent one is in better condition than the first, nearly 20 years later. Just goes to show how well people generally take care of them, which is great!
My SH-101 is sick :( Anyone got any good tips for sites with advice on DIY repairs? It just produces the same high-pitched note for every key - I'm guessing there's something amiss in the KCV circuit but I have no idea. I'm not great with electronics...
TRANSPOSE works with the sequencer, buddy. So there is that...
jaja, my cat freaked at 3:15
Oscillators? Oscillator. Just sayin’.
