The manga is a masterpiece and the anime is legendary in spite of its flaws. Yet lots of people would never give it a try because of misconception. Many thanks to the youtube community for spreading the good word about NGE.
Where is Evangelion on this list?! That's the first thing I think of when I hear the term "raised the bar." It is such a massively influential series that has yet to be touched even today.
+B1indFremen I don't disagree on the influence of the Evangelion, personally I'd say Gunbuster or Gundam deserve to be on the list even moreso, simply because they revolutionised the Super Robot and Mecha anime genres respectively.
+Gabriel Arroyo sure it did, it was the most successful anime of the 1990s but it wouldn't have existed without already established conventions of the genre.
I love most of the anime on this list, a great deal of which are in my all time favorites, but why does all your vids feel like the same thing rehashed every time? The same anime, the same excessive praise and the same wording. Starting to sound like a broken record.
+rloul1 If that's true, maybe he shouldn't do lists that forces the same thing to begin with? +AnimeEveryday Still curious to what you think the top 10 critically underrated shows are.
Akira, Ghost in the Shell, & Cowboy Bebop all brought the genre to a new medium. Unfortunately there hasn't been an Anime to push the bar even higher in recent memory.
Thanatos388 I guessed Eureka 7, Mushishi, something of Maasaki Yuasa(Kaiba or Tatami Galaxy), that SoL anime i forgot it's name, GiTS and i knew LoGH would be n1. Somehow I completely forgot about Texhnolyze so that was a pleasent surprise. Also didn't see MA coming.
You listed most of the ones I would have listed... lol I'll bring up Digimon Tamers though. It showed me just what a kids show is capable of. It took the original formula of kids being sucked into another world, meeting monsters and using them to fight other monsters to save the world and took it into not only a completely different direction but made it more realistic. The characters, both kids and adults, act more like real people and aren't the "chosen ones", the adults aren't pushed to the side as if they're unimportant, the digimon have their own character arcs, there're dire consequences to actions, the story goes into complex themes of artificial life and humanity. The themes are so expertly worked into the plot that it seamlessly explores them without even trying, better than most ADULT anime I've seen, all while constantly raising the stakes, fleshing out and developing it's characters and ends in a very satisfying and cathartic way. Even if it's animation isn't the best, it has enough cool digimon designs to make up for it. I don't just write off kids shows anymore and I have a new standard for them now.
+Keten Zima I thought the adult characters were rather useful in the Vandemon arc of Digimon Adventure. The opposite of what I usually expected of kids shows.
+Rakka of Glie / When it comes to the adults in that arc, I never felt they were "characters". They did things sure but they just kind of show up and help out. In Tamers, the adults are given individual personalities, focus and in some cases backdrops, which made them feel more realistic and important. Adventure is certainly a decent show too though, I should go back and re-watch it at some point.
I always took you as an older viewer like myself since you have a lot of experience in the older anime. I'm impressed that younger viewers like you got into the past anime. I always try to show younger viewers some older content that changed the game. My first experience was Nausicaa on HBO as a kid back in 1985..been a fan since.
I'm not quite as old, but was more riding the end of the second wave of anime in the mid to late 90's, but I grew up on a lot of stuff like Macross, Bebop, Trigun, and Escaflowne...So I appreciate when younger fans recognize earlier greater like Nausicaa and Laputa.
Planetes raised the bar for... realism. I know that's a weird thing to judge an anime by, but really, that's what makes it so awesome. It's one of the most realistic sci fi (or I guess more accurately speculative fiction) shows I've seen. Period. And that makes it really fascinating. They try to take a really grounded (no pun intended) look at what the near future of space might actually be like. And most of the characters are quite likable too. I also loved Eureka Seven, which is kind of an interesting contrast to this video because it wasn't anywhere near my first anime. It was just the latest thing that happened to be coming out on Adult Swim. I'm not sure what it was exactly. I think it was just kind of a really awesome combination of normal and weird. It had a really solid base of many positive qualities and did enjoyable and often unexpected or interesting things with it.
Because Planetes has a really great dialogue. Most animes expand their scale with a lot of exposition, less usual human dialogue, and cheap animation, but not with Planetes. Also, before Hachimaki began taking Von Braun test, Planetes's episodes are used to create an interesting character arc for each one of the characters. Every episode have its own problem to lift the character development. So, yeah, Planetes is a masterpiece of anime
Hard sci-fi can be damn compelling. I've actually grown to like softer sci-fi shows recently, as they often tackle general philosophical issues more aptly, but Hard SF has that bonus of often directly referencing current or possible near-future social problems.
The anime that most raised the bar for me, is "monster" after that, i couldn't find anything that surpass it.And i've seen a lot of anime, really really excellent anime.
Ghost in the Shell SAC, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Space Dandy, Rurouni Kenshin OVA, Shin Sekai Yori and Haibane Renmei showed me how well written and well presented some shows could be. Especially the direction, the atmosphere and the worldbuilding which is something I highly appreciate in any medium. A lot of these shows also SHOWED rather than TELL which is something really rare to find in anime. I would also like to give an honorable mention to Fate Zero and Steins Gate mainly because they showed me what visual novel/light novel adaptations could truly be capable of. These were both anime aired specifically at otakus, but they lacked all the cliche elements that seemed to plague modern titles to this date (such as panty shots, a generic school setting, underdeveloped archetypes etc). They made me change my view about the entire industry being filled with nothing but fanservice, tsunderes, harems and moeblobs.
+Bandicoot Who could forget Kurisu, ohhh.. Kurisu.... have you seen Angel Beats or Charlotte? I liked them both and they are a bit different(better) when compared to the generic anime of today.
TheAlmightyCon Only saw the first 3 episodes of Angel beats, thought it was alright so far. Charlotte I thought really dropped the ball in terms of plot and I personally found the first half to be fairly generic.
FMAB/FMA is my number one Anime that raised the bar in how much I appreciate the medium. Some others would be Cowboy Bebop, Hajime no Ippo, Ghost in the Shell, HXH 2011, Yu Yu Hakusho, Gurren Lagann, FLCL, Ping Pong, Eureka Seven,The Tatami Galaxy, NGE and Welcome to the NHK.
For me are these: 1-Evangelion 2-Ghost in the Shell (all) 3-Full Metal Alchemist 4-Akira 5-Bubblegum Crisis 6-Gunbuster 7-Perfect Blue 8-Cowboy Bebop 9-Armitage III 10-Macross
Gotten so used to you now I could've guessed 6-7/10 of the anime you listed :D Would like to hear more of you thoughts on GitS SAC. We hear your opinion on the movie alot so just makes me wonder if you plan to do a video dedicated to SAC because it's not something I hear you talk about. Much like you did with movie and Arise. Think Spice&Wolf, NHK & Monster have had the biggest influence on me, purely based on the characters and showing me just how important it is to have strong characterization. Many of the anime you listed I haven't got round to watching but ofcourse Akira is one that pulled me into the Neo Tokyo world when I first watched it. Plan to watch Mushishi and hoping to see it do the same so I can get a higher appreciation. There's many anime I've watched that are just average that made me appreciate the good stuff so much more aswell but that list is sizable. :D
for me anime that change whole new standard is mecha = gundam *release in 1979, psychological thriller = monster, sport = captain tsubasa * this anime makes japanese started play Football/Soccer better than before, magical girl = sailormoon, card game = yu gi oh, chanbara = rurouni kenshin.
Astro boy started it all. It's the first popular animated Japanese television series that embodied the aesthetic that later became familiar worldwide as anime.
Dbz raised the bar in full animated fight scenes on a tv show. ghost in the shell raised the bar for story telling as well. that movie is incredible for an anime and a film.
I was lucky. My first exposure to anime was with the Ghost in the Shell tv series. I had never before encountered an animated show (or movie) that provided something for my brain to chew on long after viewing. Although, it's just as tough for new series to capture the same feelings because i started with such a great bar height. I think Gurren Lagann was my first bar raiser. I hadn't really been interested in shows like it before, but i found it easier to get into shows like Eureka 7 and Gargantia after.
Cowboy Bebop - Basically same thing you said. Nadesico - The only show I've seen that was not only a highly effective homage, and hilarious parody, but also highly emotional and intense drama. Trigun - Two words, space western...Plus you know, Vash. Serial Experiments Lain - The most unique and oddly believable scifi...and also one of the most well researched. Castle In The Sky - Both family friendly and fun while being really dark...Not to mention extremely engaging and immersive. Escaflowne - The perfect dark and twisty fantasy that still somehow was hopeful and romantic. To be honest, this series is the measuring stick I use for every other fantasy anime ever. Now And Then, Here And There - This is both the darkest and most soul wrenching look at heart wrenching topics like child soldiers and sex trafficking wrapped in a post apocalyptic sci-fi shell, but also, despite the heartwrenching themes (and boy do they make their characters suffer) it also manages to still be heartwarming and quite possibly the most life affirming show I've ever seen even after exploring horrendous things like child soldiers and genocide. I could do more, but that's good for now.
Raising the bar...I mean we can all have our own top 10s, but the 2 essential ones I think that really deserve to be on every list is evangelion and death note. Cowboy Bebop & FLCL I would agree with as well. These shows raised the bar for their time for sure. Anyways cool list :).
Honestly I'm watching this video because I needed to hear someone praising LoGH and from your other videos I knew you probably would xD. I'm watching that anime right now and it's so good that I just cannot understand why it's not mentioned by everybody all the time. All my respects to the rest of the animes on this list too. All of them are perspective changing indeed.
I have only seen half of these. Mushishi is by far the best anime I have seen so far, and I look forward to seeing the ones on your list I have yet to see. Personally, the best "raise the bar" anime I have seen are Mushishi and Baccano.
I see you had the Macross series in your intro but not as a series that "Raised the Bar " I think thats a huge omission this series IMO is one of the best anime series ever made.I first saw this series in the 80s under the name Robotech and it was the first time I was ever exposed to Japanese style anime. And this was the series that exposed the most of west to anime as well. I know that anime lovers will say that the Gumdam series or even Akira was the first but Robotech was the first series that was not a Heman/Thundercats/Comic strip type "cartoon"that was showed on a Saturday morning .There was an amazing story a great cast of characters awesome music epic space battles great character development a love story and even character death which was unheard of in any "cartoons" series in the 80s.And not to mention the retelling of the series in the 1984 movie Do you Remember Love ? which IMO is one of the most amazing anime Movies ever made.I know its your list an all but I think this series did "Raise the Bar" where anime is concerned.
Steven Wallace Starblazer was an ok series but IMO Macross took the "space opera " theme to an epic level. Also Starblazer was edited to shit for it to be shown on western television, now Macross or should I say Robotech was cut down as well but not as much as Starblazer. And to be honest I saw Starblazer in 2000 something as an adult and Macross I saw in the early 80s as a kid so the macross series had more of an impact on me than Starblazer. Also Starblazer had a limited release in the U.S so fewer of us got to see the series as kids. Now both are series that have made an impact to the anime world don't get me wrong but Macross more than Space Battleship Yamato IMO what do you think ?
Romano Coombs It's funny you talking about macross putting stress on every science department and public library because as a kid me and my friends were super hyped about vf-1s valkyrie being a thing in the future.I even wanted to join the royal Canadian air force as a kid thinking that I could fly a Valkyrie fighter LOL GOD I MISS THE 80's !!!!
Sword of the Stranger, The Garden of Words, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Samurai Champloo, Tengen Toppa Gurren Laggan, Madoka Magica, Bakemonogatari, Paprika(I'd put Perfect Blue but Paprika influenced me more just because it was the first Satoshi Kon movie I watched), Death Note and Spirited Away.
As a guy who's relatively new to Anime, I would like to say Zankyou no Terror. The "show - don't tell" attitude that the creators had regarding the story is absolutely brilliant. What really blew my mind is the way the series used directing to tell details about the story. There is literally 1 exposition dump scene around the middle of the show, and unlike others it doesn't feel contrived. We're not shown it because the viewer needs to know, but because that's how the story is. The characters feel like real people, even though some of them are near impossible to relate to. In addition, Terror looks absolutely gorgeous, and don't even get me started on the soundtrack. This OST is literally one of the best I've ever listened to in Anime. I've listened to the entire thing through multiple times and enjoyed it every time which is not a thing I can say about many other Anime.
Great list! didn't like Eureka Seven that much though, havn't seen legend of the galactic heros yet, can't wait to check it out! looking forward to more videos from you!
Sure, this video might be repetitive, but that does not make it bad. I would say the quality of anime showcased justify it, just a way of venting appreciation for actually well made anime. It is nice to see different perspectives, but that's why there are more than one anime youtubers. Sometimes videos are made for personal documentation, rather than for pleasing an audience.
These were your choices? Back when it was reverently called Japanimation is when my experience began. Star Blazers (Yamato), then Robotech (Macross etc) which unquestionably opened the door and established the bar outside of Japan markets. I was attending conventions that were called Robotech Conventions, there were no other "anime" conventions, it was a Robotech convention or nothing. Then things like Megazone 23 Part 2 crossed my path, A wind named amnesia, Venus wars, Ghost in the shell and Appleseed.
Bar raisers for me (in order I watched them): Revolutionary Girl Utena, Psycho-Pass, Suisei no Gargantia, Shiki, Monogatari Second Season, Shirobako, Trigun, Sound! Euphonium, Millennium Actress, Fullmetal Alchemist
the most influential anime to me (in no particular order)- Akira; Sol Bianca and Sol Bianca 2 (the ova's); Genesis Survivor Gairth; Bubblegum Crisis; Laputa and Nausicaa; Gundam 0079; 0080- War in the Pocket; 0083 Stardust Memory; Patlabor; Cowboy Bebop; Macro Plus; Planetes; Voices of a Distant Star (if you've done a vid on this i look forward to watching it :) There are plenty more (Tenchi Muyo, Ranma 1/2, Wings of the Honneamise, Perfect Blue, 5cm per second, Otaku No Video to name a few) that that will always have a place n my heart. I'd also add (the French/Japanese hybrid if you like) Oban Star Racers to the list as, while it's more youthful than most Japanese shows i really did enjoy it. A special mention must go to the first anime i can remember which i first saw in it's (mutilated) American version as Battle of the Planets. i loved it when i was twelve and it wasn't until i was in my early thirties before i saw the original Science Ninja Team Gatchaman. Watching it now it does look a bit ropey but then it was made in 1972 and, apparently, on a budget so i'm willing to cut them some slack. Didn't think this comment would be so long... take care :)
Sentai needs to do something with LotGH. They need to get it legally streaming somewhere or get a release for a reasonable price. I really would like to watch the show =O
Eureka Seven is honestly a game changer. Honestly it's genius. Under a romance fantasy plot. We have: Fantastic innovate visuals improving on Macross' inital ideas, truly with so much artistic value, and perfect quality animation that refuses to age. A vibrant colorful world with cracks, bearing a very disturbing messed up background thats just insane. A cast of extremely complex, humane characters with motives, that deliver understanding to the viewer regardless of what side they are on. A catastrophically, ludicrous amount of references to old Acid:EDM tracks, from the culture, to the music to the names of events, groups of machines used. KLF is a group, LFO is a setting, 303-909-808 are ROLAND synths, The summer of love is an actual UK event. E7 knows exactly what culture it tries to replicate, and executes it with grace. A premise that looks romantic on the surface but has socio-political, cultural themes revolving around minority groups, spiritual and religious figures, culture, terrorism, environmental crisis's, war and most importantly the acceptance of someone who is fundamentally different both on a racial and cellular level. The ability to fully expose, and demonstrate every single side of a conflict without bias. And so much more I have never seen a show in my life that is so inviting to the traditional viewer yet is just jam packed with so much depth and meaning, it is my fucking curse because it it impossible for me to find something past 2006 that beats it.
It's beyond my reasoning how E7 managed to elude me until now. I've only heard a few mentions here or there, but it wasn't until the announcement of Hi-Evolution that I've realized how under-rated it is, especially considering its age, and how passionate the fanbase is about it. I'm nearly at the end now and I'm utterly in love with it, and I consider it as great as FMA:B and HxH, I'm just worried that there'll be an emptiness once I finish it, at least until the movies come out in the next 3 years.
AnimeEveryday I tend to find this very concept of 'info dumping' and explanations given in shows, to often provide a lot of confusion when people talk about it, and judge it. Not to mention hypocrisy. It tends to be a hard thing to discuss, and assign adequate merit to.
Rakka of Glie I just find that some people may bitch and moan about info dumping in a particular show or two, but heavily praise another show that has it. It might be a different type of info dumping, but it still involves talking heads expositing information. Two examples of shows where some people may do this, are Fate/Zero and Ghost in the Shell SAC. Both shows have received criticism for their heavy exposition, but some people are perfectly fine with it in one of the two shows, but not the other. Obviously the quality of the exposition is important too, but they don't even make note if that fact, and just focus in the very fact that they have extensive info dumping, when criticising.
Although they aren't as huge as your choices, I feel like Jojo or Dragonball should be on the list for having such a huge impact on the community, rather than storytelling wise.
I really cannot wait for you to watch Monster. It will rival LOGH. Ep 38 pissed me off, but I realize the point of it now. Probably the best anime when it comes to exploration of humans perception of good and evil.
For storytelling, it's always be all Shinichiro Watanabe's work, except Zankyou no Terror. Watanabe has his own way to create a drama, and to trim a heavy exposition so it can be understandable. Berserk is also a good example. I've never seen a character development that can be as great as Griffith. *spoiler alert* I can't even imagine how could a very wise, strong, brave man turns into something so evil. Sure it's sucks that the anime gave you some anticipation before he broke down and not just let it flow, but damn, it's still a great character development. Sure a lot of anime has done this too, but it's still Berserk for me due to its overly dark and gritty animation
I honestly don't see how NGE isn't number 1 let alone on this list. I can name countless number of famous reviewers on RUclips who say that EoE is not only the best anime movie of all time but the best movie of all time
This video is based more on his experience than anime history itself. Clips from it are also in the start and he has talked a lot about it effecting anime history.
I would suggest doing something different than even more top list with the same of your favourites. I feel like watching the same video for a while now, only the title changes.
I was so happy when I saw Tatami galaxy in the opening, because before I had even clicked on this I figured it should have been mentioned for its impressive story telling, being able to convey such a heavy idea (every chance not taken is a missed opportunity) in a mere 11 episodes. What happened, where is it, not even an honorable mention for it outside of the opening scene?
Well the first anime that influenced me is Death note. My first animes were probably naruto and the flame of recca,DBZ( pretty average start). But death note showed me that dudes playing tennis match or dudes monitoring other dudes and also creative thinking can make an amazing show. Of course that was long ago. Here are my other infuletial series. 1. welcome to the nhk 2.Neon geneisis Evangelion 3.Cowboy bebop 4.Full metal alchemist brotherhood( deconstruced the shonen battle series for me) 5.ping pong the animation 6. Fate zero.
My list: Cowboy Bebop Ghost in the Shell Legend of the Galactic Heroes NGE Madoka Code Geass Shinseki Yori Mushishi Rurouni Kenshin Trust and Betrayal Higurashi Honorable mention to Fate/Zero and Steins:gate
Definitely Ping Pong for me. One of the best written if not THE best written anime I've watched. The complexity and development of characters, the themes and just overall story reaches far beyond anything I've experienced. What's also brilliant is the fact that the story NEVER gets pretentious.
I agree, but it was the anime that I first saw and the story has left so much impression on me, which led me to read the manga. And let's face it, the animation isn't so good, but neither is the one in LoGH.
YazooNoDorei it's amazing. i'm both happy and worried for the new anime. it's gonna go beyond the golden age arc which is insane! i'm worried about the usage of cg animation and the possibility of censorship though.
Angel's Egg (Tenshi no Tamago) was the one that did it for me. Have you seen it? EDIT: Nevermind, you mention Angel's Egg in your underrated anime video!
Giant Robo was an anim that showed me that popularity and quality didn't necessarily have anything to do with each other. All of the few mecha I've seen up until that point were all considered masterpieces (code geass, Gurren lagann) and I, new to the genre, saw them as the same. After seeing giant Robo however they felt, lesser. Watching more and more (getter Robo armaggedon, Zeta Gundam)they become ok homages to much better shows.
lubed virgin olives on maternity leave NGE does not deconstruct the mecha genre. In MGS2, you are not "still" a cool badass. www.gwern.net/docs/eva/1996-newtype-anno-interview
lubed virgin olives on maternity leave How do you come up with that? Did you hear it on the news? There is nothing to refute, when there is nothing claimed.
if i were to list anime, 1 thing with you and me would be the same. that is i would also start these list with eureka 7. its not the best story ever told, but it is my most beloved anime.
This list contains many of my personal favourites. Especially Mushishi and Aria. :) Yeah I know. But there are some series that I would put on this list too. 1. Monster, simply a Masterpiece. I know, I know, the Manga is an Masterpiece and its an faithful adaption, but that doesnt change the fact. 2. Higurashi no nako koro ni. This series and it follow-ups just scared the shit out of me. I had to pause for some days after about 20 Episodes, because I couldnt take it anymore. 3. Many of the works of Isao Takahata, e.g. Kaguyahime or Yamadas or Hotaru no haka. Great movies. I could go on but I shouldnt. Last for its great Artwork and storytelling: Ôkami to kôshinryô. These films and series opened up a new world for me and showed me how bad many movies are.
+max101victory Animation > Natural > OVA > Origination 1-5 > Origination ep 5.5 (special) > Origination 6-13 And make sure not to watch K-on, it's garbage.
While I think your content is great and informative, and have truly changed my perspective on anime (seriously, thank you) but I find that your videos are getting far too repetitive. Before watching this video, I, like many others, could already predict what anime you would say. Because the anime that are your favorites tend to be the ones that truly changed your view on anime. So, I don't think that we actually needed this video, as regular followers of your channel already know which anime that raised the bar from looking at your "History of Anime " series of videos and countless other videos. Just a recommendation, I really wish that you would branch out and take a look at other anime that raised the bar. Perhaps Ghibli films, or Space Battleship Yamato, Gundam, and perhaps some films in the 2000s, because as you said, the 2000s is an important time in anime. I just realized that you probably have already watched a lot of 80's and 90's anime, so telling you to watch more old-school anime isn't really an option. But, I would still highly suggest reviewing and watching anime of this time period. Also, just wondering, I don't think you have made a review in a while, so hoping you will make one in the near future. So until then, I'll still be following your channel and supporting you. I just hope some improvements can be made to this channel as I do love your channel. It has really changed how I view anime as a whole, so thank you.
10 Anime That Raised The Bar (for me). title is a bit clickbaity atm lol. Also quick grammar note: around 6:40 you said "not because it done things that people had done before better, but because it done things which had never been done before", when it should be "not because it DID things that people had done before..." Probably just an error you accidentally glossed over though.
To answer your question:
Ghost in t...
... NEON GENESIS EVANGELION
Both, really.
The manga is a masterpiece and the anime is legendary in spite of its flaws. Yet lots of people would never give it a try because of misconception. Many thanks to the youtube community for spreading the good word about NGE.
Destroyer Inazuma Manga is good but no masterpiece sonny.
Where is Evangelion on this list?! That's the first thing I think of when I hear the term "raised the bar." It is such a massively influential series that has yet to be touched even today.
My thoughts exactly...
+B1indFremen I don't disagree on the influence of the Evangelion, personally I'd say Gunbuster or Gundam deserve to be on the list even moreso, simply because they revolutionised the Super Robot and Mecha anime genres respectively.
+Kranku ⚔ agree with you, gundam release in 1979 change mecha anime to a new era more than any mecha anime release before it.
+Kranku ⚔ and evangelion did not revolutionised the mechagenre and even anime as a whole?
+Gabriel Arroyo sure it did, it was the most successful anime of the 1990s but it wouldn't have existed without already established conventions of the genre.
I love most of the anime on this list, a great deal of which are in my all time favorites, but why does all your vids feel like the same thing rehashed every time? The same anime, the same excessive praise and the same wording. Starting to sound like a broken record.
Probably because most modern anime is shit so there's nothing more recent for him to add.
This wad just more of a general video, I didn't have much room to chose more obscure anime due to the topic.
I felt it is like " my top favorite anime list but sorted in a different way " .
+AnimeEveryday your taste in anime is amazing. I have the same taste as you. every show you love, I love as well. you earned a subscriber.
Honestly, i could predict most of your list now.
+Terriccota Pie PraiseMushishiEveryday more like ;) I'll see myself out now.
Terriccota Pie Yeah that was an odd one to see. Aria too.
Thanatos388 Well, i know for sure AE likes Aria.
+Terriccota Pie It was very similar to his 10 favorites or 10 must watch lists.
You listed most of the ones I would have listed... lol
I'll bring up Digimon Tamers though.
+Keten Zima Have you seen Dennou Coil btw? I think you'll appreciate it considering you liked the themes of Digimon Tamers.
+Bandicoot / I love Dennou Coil. Top tier kids anime.
+Rakka of Glie I agree to the Myotismon arc. Yes I'm an English dub fan ha.
why no evangelion? thats was the series that changed my life the most,
because Shinji is a prick
Monster should be on this list. No other anime goes the topic of evil as much as well Monster.
No one talks about Planetes ever.
Oh yeah, definitely subscribing to you.
Thanks bud! :)
+AnimeEveryday If you were to create an anime series, which of these series would be the biggest influence, animation and story-wise?
Bandicoot ahhh ok... (-_-) Angel Beats is heart wrenching though >_>
Glad to see Millennium Actress here :3
+Terriccota Pie Shit! I still need to watch that.
The JuanTrueKaiser Do it now!
+Terriccota Pie is your user name by any chance referencing a system of a down song? :P
frequency15k Yup. I made it up in highschool
I love Akira. It's classic.
"Where is Unlimited Budget Works!!!??"
- r/anime
/a/ is worse
+The JuanTrueKaiser but the vn reallyraised the bar for porn games
+The JuanTrueKaiser Nope, /r/anime only watches JoJo and One Punch Man. Oh, and FMAB.
You could say the original VN raised the bar, the animes of it however, meh.
+FullmetalSonic260 Yes i love FMAB.
For me are these:
1-Evangelion
2-Ghost in the Shell (all)
3-Full Metal Alchemist
4-Akira
5-Bubblegum Crisis
6-Gunbuster
7-Perfect Blue
8-Cowboy Bebop
9-Armitage III
10-Macross
for me anime that change whole new standard is mecha = gundam *release in 1979, psychological thriller = monster, sport = captain tsubasa * this anime makes japanese started play Football/Soccer better than before, magical girl = sailormoon, card game = yu gi oh, chanbara = rurouni kenshin.
sensing a recurring theme with the anime you talk about...
Other than the ones you have mentioned:
Afro Samurai
Samurai Champloo
Ninja Scrolls
Wolf Children
Claymore
Could I ask what those anime shown at the beginning are called? That little burst of honorable mentions?
One of them is Tatami Galaxy, which is a masterpiece
Astro boy started it all. It's the first popular animated Japanese television series that embodied the aesthetic that later became familiar worldwide as anime.
Good writing! Always enjoy your vids
One piece of advice: you often say "it done it well" instead of "it did it well" which always throws me haha. Is that a scottish thing?
Dbz raised the bar in full animated fight scenes on a tv show.
ghost in the shell raised the bar for story telling as well. that movie is incredible for an anime and a film.
pretty much everything done by studio gihbli and evengelion movies were my thing
Nice list homie. Particularly the bebop description.
Thanks :)
Nice channel liked and subbed. Out of curiosity: have you ever taken part in any podcast and would you be willing to?
+xoxoFISHERxoxo The first? The space opera Starblazers, taken from Space Battleship Yamato, came out in the late 70's.
AKB0048, Gin no Saji, Higurashi, Kokoro Connect, White Album 2, and Sakurakou were also raised my expectations
Samurai champloo? And Ninja Scroll was the beginning for me.
It's sad how I still haven't seen any of these
Better change that then! :)
I'd say Cowboy Bebop or Mushishi would be a good starting point
+AnimeEveryday I'm tryin man, trust me;) It's really difficult for me since i barely have any free time.
+B0ristheCabbage yeah those two are definitely next on my list to watch along w/ Aria
What directors would make awesome remakes of Akira or Galactic Heroes?
I haven't seen all of the items on your list, but I agree 100% with you on the ones I have. :)
Where's cory in the house?
Golden Boy was such an inspiration for me!
Hey there, where can I find the track you used in the video?
It doesn't seem to be in the link you put in the description
the most influential anime to me (in no particular order)-
Akira;
Sol Bianca and Sol Bianca 2 (the ova's);
Genesis Survivor Gairth;
Bubblegum Crisis;
Laputa and Nausicaa;
Gundam 0079; 0080- War in the Pocket; 0083 Stardust Memory;
Patlabor;
Cowboy Bebop;
Macro Plus;
Planetes;
Voices of a Distant Star (if you've done a vid on this i look forward to watching it :)
There are plenty more (Tenchi Muyo, Ranma 1/2, Wings of the Honneamise, Perfect Blue, 5cm per second, Otaku No Video to name a few) that that will always have a place n my heart.
Didn't think this comment would be so long... take care :)
for me it was fate/zero, madoka magica and death note that really drew me into anime
Can you do a review on perfect blue? Still on the fence if I should commit the time to watch it
I feel like the monogatari series definitely should have been on this list.
i think we could see this list coming. How about we do the reverse? Anime shows that lowered the bar?
Sentai needs to do something with LotGH. They need to get it legally streaming somewhere or get a release for a reasonable price. I really would like to watch the show =O
Eureka seven is such a beautiful masterpiece. I cant wait for the hi evolution movie trilogy reboot this fall.
Eureka Seven is honestly a game changer. Honestly it's genius. Under a romance fantasy plot. We have:
Fantastic innovate visuals improving on Macross' inital ideas, truly with so much artistic value, and perfect quality animation that refuses to age.
And so much more
I have never seen a show in my life that is so inviting to the traditional viewer yet is just jam packed with so much depth and meaning, it is my fucking curse because it it impossible for me to find something past 2006 that beats it.
Eureka Seven yesss
I felt there was a lot of info dumping in Mushishi. It was the kind kind, and the show was very well paced. But I dint see how it doesn't have it.
The information given in Mushishi was poetic and metaphorical rather than just dumped on the viewer.
AnimeEveryday I tend to find this very concept of 'info dumping' and explanations given in shows, to often provide a lot of confusion when people talk about it, and judge it. Not to mention hypocrisy. It tends to be a hard thing to discuss, and assign adequate merit to.
+gilgamesh310 What hypocrisy do you associate with this discussion?
***** That's a good explanation. Rarely do people specify this sort of thing, though. Some people are as vague as just saying "too much talking".
Game changing anime imo are
Akira
Gundamn
Robotech
Gunbuster
Cowboy bebop
Vampire hunter D
Ghost in the shell
Genocyber
For me it was Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood that had the greatest impact
If only Kirchies saw this list.
Do some more list videos dude! slice of life..action..romance different categories..really like ur taste
Well thank you, I guess I have a new to-watch list :)
a fool who persists in his folly will become wise.
I would suggest doing something different than even more top list with the same of your favourites. I feel like watching the same video for a while now, only the title changes.
I am surprise that none of miyazaki's film got mentioned :O
You should try Kemono no Soja
1. welcome to the nhk
2.Neon geneisis Evangelion
3.Cowboy bebop
4.Full metal alchemist brotherhood( deconstruced the shonen battle series for me)
5.ping pong the animation
6. Fate zero.
My list:
Cowboy Bebop
Ghost in the Shell
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
NGE
Madoka
Code Geass
Shinseki Yori
Mushishi
Rurouni Kenshin Trust and Betrayal
Higurashi
Honorable mention to Fate/Zero and Steins:gate
I would like to see a top 10 of animes that you have not seen and that are suposed to be bar raisers...
Have you watched the new ghost in the shell movie yet?
Definitely Ping Pong for me. One of the best written if not THE best written anime I've watched. The complexity and development of characters, the themes and just overall story reaches far beyond anything I've experienced. What's also brilliant is the fact that the story NEVER gets pretentious.
Good choice! :)
If you like Legend of the Galactic Heroes, try out Orlando Furioso.
Appleseed was the movie that blew my mind, & started my love affair with Japanese anime.
You're the plug!!!!!!!
Mushishi is something special
I can't stress Berserk hard enough!!!
Preach it! It is absolutely amazing
I agree, but it was the anime that I first saw and the story has left so much impression on me, which led me to read the manga. And let's face it, the animation isn't so good, but neither is the one in LoGH.
+YazooNoDorei dude, berserk and vagabond are my two most favorite manga out there.
Berserk is such a masterpiece, isn't it? I love it.
YazooNoDorei it's amazing. i'm both happy and worried for the new anime. it's gonna go beyond the golden age arc which is insane! i'm worried about the usage of cg animation and the possibility of censorship though.
What about the Clannad series?
Everyone here complaining about how easy it is to predict your top lists lol.
WOOOOOOOOO MILLENIUM ACTRESS
I AM NOT ALONE
"I never felt like a character shouldn't have been there."
Not even the Earth cult?
couldnt find the click bait? :(
Angel's Egg (Tenshi no Tamago) was the one that did it for me.
+dave smith geurren lagann is more of an open love letter to the genre than a masterpiece. code geass is alright, well the first season is good.
Understanding MGS2 might help when trying to understand NGE.
lubed virgin olives on maternity leave Sorry that i'm serious on the internet. I apologize. www.metagearsolid.org/2012/04/mgs2-review-chapter-1/2/
lubed virgin olives on maternity leave NGE does not deconstruct the mecha genre. In MGS2, you are not "still" a cool badass.
www.gwern.net/docs/eva/1996-newtype-anno-interview
lubed virgin olives on maternity leave How do you come up with that? Did you hear it on the news? There is nothing to refute, when there is nothing claimed.
lubed virgin olives on maternity leave Neh.
lubed virgin olives on maternity leave Anyway, thanks for the replies.
This plays like a typical 3x3 from a hipster on /a . All you needed was Angels Egg or Kino's Journey.
But that's k so i thumbs upped.
When I think raise the bar in anime it ghost in the shell psycho pass hand down !
if i were to list anime, 1 thing with you and me would be the same. that is i would also start these list with eureka 7. its not the best story ever told, but it is my most beloved anime.
I don't know why, but a lot of my friend doesn't like mushishi. I know it's different from popular shonnen anime, but why?
Regarding Aria, where do I start? Because there seems to be multiple anime with the name "Aria"
+max101victory Look on MAL. Aria the Animation > Aria the Natural > Aria the Origination. There are a couple OVAs mixed in there too.
Thanks
+max101victory Animation > Natural > OVA > Origination 1-5 > Origination ep 5.5 (special) > Origination 6-13
And make sure not to watch K-on, it's garbage.
Yousif Riyadh whoa whoa whoa...K-On is a gem.
+B1indFremen yeah that's just like your opinion mahn
Of all franchises, Suzumiya Haruhi did it for me.
