One of my favorite things about Cyberpunk is the insanely detailed backgrounds. Monstrous Skyscrapers, winding tubes and pipes, smoke puffing out of machines - the cyberpunk aesthetic is beautiful and terrifying at the same time.
Cyberpunk would be a nice genre to be revived in a day where most anime is so bright and colorful. It's crazy that Akira looks like it still could've been made today!
There was Un-Go which was good, but few ever saw it sadly. A few years ago there was Real Drive, a show by Production I.G with the concept by Masamune Shirow. There was also Mardock Scramble.
Ergo proxy is such a great anime I was surprised so much by it. I was most surprised because I was recommended it by a non anime fan. Which proves just how good a show it really is.
Cyberpunk has always captivated me ever since I was a kid. The giant provoking skyscrapers to the dim neon lit city lights reflecting off of wet streets. Atmosphere is key in literally anything, and that's probably why I enjoy and find the Cyberpunk aesthetic so calming and cold.
Some stuff worth trying for cyberpunk Mardock Scramble Armitage III Black Magic M-66 Compilation stuff like Neo Tokyo, Memories and Robot Carnival Spinoffs of Bubble gum Crisis like AD Police Files and Parasite Dolls Also for manga Battle Angel Alita and Eden: It's an Endless world are musts.
Alita first introduced me to a lot of Sci Fi concepts. I guess that's part of the reason why it has a special place in my heart. I came by it completely by accident, too.
Do you agree that cyberpunk is basically a realitiscally view of what our world will be in the near future, before reaching to the future depicted on movies like Star Trek and Starwars.
AnimeEveryday In the next 200 or 400 our world and our cities, will look like most cities in most cyberpunk media. Humans living side by side with robots, at least the animatrix second renaissance becomes reality, hope not. I don't know if you played FF7, but most likely will be like that, the richer living in wealthy districts with tall skyscrapers and the poor people living in dirty suburbs, like today.
Eh ... it's basically a realistic view of what our world will be in the near future if today literally everyone suddenly became an a-hole. Actual corporations won't be as blatantly evil. Empathis on the word "blatantly".
Alex Krycek Rothschilds are pretty much as evil as a James Bond movie villain also the degenerate millenials get more welfare the more babies they pop out so the least useful people to society are going to be raising a nuch larger chunk of the populace this is roughly the inevitable future unfortunately which is why the genre is so popular
OMG!!! You mentioned Metropolis!!! That one seriously doesn't get the acclaim it deserves!!! A Katsuhiro Otomo written screenplay that's an adaptation of an Osamu Tezuka manga series? YES!!! XD
Your videos are truly compelling to make people dive deeper into shows and movies to find real and special works of art, instead of accepting everything that popular demand ends up ruining. Good job.
I really enjoyed the pace and tone of this video, you didn't flash past each anime, causing me to forget the previous one. Instead weaved through them, conveying true appreciation for the works. Thank you
I'm not too familiar with the cyberpunk genre that well but some of my favorites are Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex, Psycho Pass season 1 and the first half of Ergo Proxy. Especially Stand Alone Complex, man was that a fantastic series.
and i bet it's going to be the japanese to make it happen, seeing the progress they've achieved in robotics and AI. year by year they crawl deeper and deeper into uncanny valley, but it's only going to get really freaky when their androids start lookining more human than actual humans. XD
THANK YOU for mentioning Bubblegum Crisis. This show got me more into anime back in the late 80's/early 90's than any other anime. It is still my all time favorite.
Metropolis is genuinely of my favorite movies. I watch it a billion times and still find new things about it. The OST is probably the best ever. It's too good of a movie, yet no one talks about it.
My favorite genre! please make a video of cyberpunk manga! there are so MANY amazing cyberpunk mangas that honestly need more acknowledgement, but sadly they haven't been made into anime series which is how most people get to know most works.
Good video, Texchnolyze is easily in my top 10 television anime and Ghost in the Shell and Akira both make it for movies. The most notable exception I would point out would be Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, which is understandable though, since it didn't quite have the same influence as the movie. SAC is probably my favourite anime of all time because of how it weaves interesting ideas like a stand alone complex itself into an engaging narrative. I also enjoyed how it developed the world far more than the movie ever could and did it with a ludicrously high budget which led to the setting being represented beautifully, such as in the background art as well as in the movements and actions of the characters.
awesome vid! I loved Akira, Macross Plus, and Ergo Proxy (back when it was on Fuse). I definitely got to catch up on the rest- especially the original Ghost in the Shell.
Excellent video essay on the topic of cyber punk anime. You really got me wanting to re-watch some of those anime. Thanks for taking the time to put that all together.
shadowrun and cyberpunk the role playing game introduced and got me into cyberpunk. akira and ghost in the shell made me fall in love with the genre. japan has really mastered it.
Texhnolyze is just absolutely fascinating. Watching it was a complete trip and very different from anything i have experienced before. Anyway, anyone excited for the upcoming Blame adaptation? Polygon Studios has some eh cg visuals, but they pick interesting manga to adapt. Here's hoping it turns out good.
Kind of sad the 1988 Appleseed OVA didn't make an appearance on your list, I always thought it was both better and more cyberpunk than GitS... especially if you comapre it to the GitS series. Granted, the new Appleseed Film series isn't exactly cyberpunk, but the older, less well known OVA was a cyberpunk masterpiece. Also, Battle Angel is on my list of best Cyberpunk anime
I am not a huge fan of anime (although I've tried to get into different titles recommended time and time again) but I thoroughly enjoy your uploads. Thanks for sharing and cheers!
Good video. I've always been a fan of sci-fi, as a kid I read a lot of "classic SF", but in the mid 80s I discovered cyberpunk. I loved the exciting new genre. There were few movies at the time I would consider CP, but anime embraced the genre; and it was a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy. East meets West, and using new technology; all common CP themes. It really got me interested in anime, a vice I still enjoy decades later.
Fantastic quality! Amazing descriptions and breakdowns of each different show. I was able to get a good picture of what they were about while you excellently continued moving forward. Subscribed!!!
I was honestly very surprised you put macross plus in here. While I can kinda see how it could be cyberpunk I think the points you brought up can be more attributed to the mecha genre
Thank you for quoting "Cyber City Oedo" as a minor jewel! Certainly not the best among the outstanding titles you talked about, but I feel like not enough justice is given to that OAV title.
man... i've been watching your videos in a random order, your deep essay on GitS got me more into it and thanks! its an animation that because of its very large available media it made me little bit reluctant to start watching it in deep. All I wanna say is keep up the good work talking about deeper topics within anime, very much appreciated. I wonder how would Nietzsche's uberman and his exploration of the "a new kind of human" would fit in the idea that Motoko seems to keep looking for evidence of morality among other things inside her that make us human in order to understand herself. Im no philosophy expert whatsoever but definitely existentialism is something that me as a robot would have a really hard time figuring out lol....
Some of these I might be grasping at straws, but I figured I would toss a couple out there that could loosely fit the sub-genre: - New Dominion Tank Police - Cowboy Bebop... (maybe) - Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01 .... (terrible anime, but the opening scene or first minute or so is good) - Roujin Z... (maybe) - Wonderful Days
I love Cyberpunk but the element I find missing in new works is the Noir. I miss the back alley detective plots. The foot chases and gun battles in rain soaked metropolis illuminated by artificial light and muzzle flash.
Are you going to do a steampunk genre video? I've only seen one thus far being Steamboy and it's funny how the creator pandered to both cyberpunk fans with Akira and steampunk with Steamboy
Really sad to see you gave up on creating more videos, but as you stated on your twitter: "i made videos about anime ". And in my opinion they were bloody good.
I do not see it in the last few months mentioned, Armitage (Poly Matrix), it is red faction meets dick's do android dream of electric sheep. So, I thought I would include an anime that questions some on the tenants of life and self-wareness.
I think Ghost in the Shell (for now; only seen two items on that list ^^;) is still my favourite Entry in the genre. Add in Stand Alone Complex and you've got a fantastic world to delve into. Still not quite sure what to make of Arise though
If anyone is willing, could you reply with some names of newer cyberpunk anime that has beautiful city landscapes, and perhaps a simpler plot line? Or maybe your favorites, either way.
Genesis Survivor Gaiarth? It's got bad reviews online, but I liked the concepts. Mainly how it's like a medieval fantasy dressed as post-apocalyptic cyberpunk. Any thoughts on it?
I just got into anime. So far I watched Cowboy Bebop, Paranoia Agent, Steins;Gate, Mushishi and One Punch Man. I just wanted to have a diverse palette to see what I like most, but now I'm kinda stuck, because I do not know what to watch next. I liked almost all of them very very much, exept OPM which i only liked. Anyone have any recommandations what to watch nex?
tnx man great video.actually i am not agree with you a bout Ergo Proxy but other ting was great your review a bout akira was remarkable thanks again.and because you asked you also could mention (Battle Angel Alita) and (Armitage III).
Angel cop. AD police files. Ai city. Parasite dolls. Dominion tank police. Dirty pair. Genocyber. Bubblegum crash. and gunnm/battle angel alita.should have been mentioned. these are classics to the max :)
Great video. From the ones you mentioned I really like Bubblegum Crisis (especially its 2003' remake Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040), Akira, Lain, Texhnolyze, Ergo Proxy and, of course, Ghost in the Shell (2 full length and Stand Alone Complex series, let's pretend Arise was never made). Imo GITS is the highest point in this subgenre. I think you forgot to mention Psycho-Pass (honestly, I like only 1st season, 2nd and full-length movie were done by the people behind GITS: Arise, so they [unfortunately] sucked). Speaking of other CP titles, I'd recommend you checking out Mardock Scramble trilogy, Real-Drive (I tried it once and dropped, but I still believe it deserves another chance) and AD Police (OVAs and TV series) + Parasite Dolls. Keep in mind that AD Police and Parasite Dolls both form part of a Bubblegum Crisis universe. Btw, nice design of titles. Thanks for the video, some of titles I bookmarked. Good luck and see you next time
+Xander Grishchenko Btw, I forgot to mention a couple of noteworthy titles like Angel Cop (one of early CP animes along with Megazone and Bubblegum Crisis; I could say that it introduced a kind of pre-GITS type of female protagonist); also Battle Angel Alita (better known as Gunnm), Armitage III dilogy (Dual-Matrix and Polymatrix). And, of course, you definitely should check Blame! mini-series. Albeit it is a series of short episodes, this one stands out above all the titles mentioned before by its unique approach to building of atmosphere. Truly a gem.
Being newer to the cyberpunk genre , I would say psycho pass (season 1. Have not seen season 2 or movie) and mardock scramble are 2 good examples of the new wave of cyberpunk . In my inexperienced opion anything pre ergo proxy ( sorry , couldn't think of any that stand out as much as the ones mentioned) is the old wave of cyberpunk. In my naive experiences in the genre , usually enjoy series from the new wave more than the old wave, and for movie's / OVAs it is the complete opposite. But that is just me. Please leave suggestions for any old wave material, I think I need to experience some history.
I thought Ergo Proxy had gorgeous cinematography and aesthetics but an utterly incomprehensible script. Stuff like Lain and Texhnolyze is complex but it makes sense and is good. Ergo Proxy though? It's just a bunch of writers taking any concepts they could out of philosophy books to try and appear smart... I'd add Psycho-Pass to this list, myself. The Sybil System reigned Japan can be interesting. If only it had been more fleshed out, however. Dennou Coil looks like an interesting one, I only watched one episode and will come back to it soon.
The main thing that didn't make sense to me is why those Proxies were necessary in the first place. Is creating a bunch of powerful robots with thematic abilities really the best way to construct and oversee settlements?
I might try giving it a second watch to make sure it makes no sense but it never happened with anything else I watched, that my final thoughts were "oh well, that was a whole lot of nothing"
Ergo Proxy is F'ing badass I'm glad to see people like it as much as me. I always thought it would make a good video game if it stayed Uber close to the source
One of my favorite things about Cyberpunk is the insanely detailed backgrounds. Monstrous Skyscrapers, winding tubes and pipes, smoke puffing out of machines - the cyberpunk aesthetic is beautiful and terrifying at the same time.
Yeah ! that's the main reason why I like cyberpunk
you explained it perfectly is a beautiful and scary place thats commands our attention
Have I got a treat for you : Tsutomu Nihei.
It gives you a feeling of nostalgia for a time that didn't exist
dude you are everywhere
Cyberpunk would be a nice genre to be revived in a day where most anime is so bright and colorful.
It's crazy that Akira looks like it still could've been made today!
Dimension W could have been that but the setting seems so lazy.
There was Un-Go which was good, but few ever saw it sadly. A few years ago there was Real Drive, a show by Production I.G with the concept by Masamune Shirow. There was also Mardock Scramble.
Well at least we had Psycho Pass
I believe it looks better than anything that could be made today
Akira looks better than pretty much any anime out today
Ergo proxy is such a great anime I was surprised so much by it. I was most surprised because I was recommended it by a non anime fan. Which proves just how good a show it really is.
7:00 "Lain being one of my favourites and probably the most experimental."
I see what you did there :)
Some stuff worth trying for cyberpunk
Mardock Scramble
Armitage III
Black Magic M-66
Compilation stuff like Neo Tokyo, Memories and Robot Carnival
Spinoffs of Bubble gum Crisis like AD Police Files and Parasite Dolls
Also for manga Battle Angel Alita and Eden: It's an Endless world are musts.
Alita first introduced me to a lot of Sci Fi concepts. I guess that's part of the reason why it has a special place in my heart. I came by it completely by accident, too.
Mardock Scramble, I agree.
+9000 for E.D.E.N. Manga
Texhnolyze is by far one of the best shows ever made
the story is but the animation itself... not that great
I couldn't agree more. Texhnolyze and Lain are my favorite cyberpunk series,
Great video. I need more cyberpunk/steampunk anime.
Do you agree that cyberpunk is basically a realitiscally view of what our world will be in the near future, before reaching to the future depicted on movies like Star Trek and Starwars.
It certainly sticks closer to reality, yes.

Akira is in a league of its own. Side note: psycho-pass was surprisingly good.
If you only watched season 1 try the movie, it's pretty good too
cool ill check it out thx
No prob. Season 2 was done by other people and is pretty bad. If you wanna see for yourself, make sure, that's fine. I can't recommend it, personally
haha i heard it was bad
It's pretty terrible lmao
OMG!!! You mentioned Metropolis!!! That one seriously doesn't get the acclaim it deserves!!! A Katsuhiro Otomo written screenplay that's an adaptation of an Osamu Tezuka manga series? YES!!! XD
Blame! is a very huge monument of cyberpunk aestethics.
Great video, as always.
started to watch the video and almost immediately subscribed..
fantastic job you did here. thank you.
Really, really, extremely well-written and expertly delivered. Great vid!
Your videos are truly compelling to make people dive deeper into shows and movies to find real and special works of art, instead of accepting everything that popular demand ends up ruining. Good job.
Now there's an anime based on Cyberpunk 2077 (And in turn its Board game prequel, Cyberpunk 2020) on the way by Trigger.
So glad you talked about Metropolis.
Really great video! My favorite is GiTS, especially after Stand Alone Complex. But I need to pick up Macross Plus soon...
Glad to see someone recognize Metropolis. I hardly see it mentioned anywhere
I know! Needs a lot more recognition
Listing Ghost in the Shell, Lain, Texhnolyze and Ergo Proxy kinda made me realise that all my favourite shows are from the same genre. Good to know
Seems like we are on the verge of living in something like this soon.
and i bet it's going to be the japanese to make it happen, seeing the progress they've achieved in robotics and AI. year by year they crawl deeper and deeper into uncanny valley, but it's only going to get really freaky when their androids start lookining more human than actual humans. XD

Ghost in the Shell has always been my favorite.
yes its amazing, in so many ways
yeah that's my favourite, too. Amazing
One of my favourite films! :D
I really don't see the hype behind it. All I see is a bunch of postmodernist tripe.
My favorite genre! please make a video of cyberpunk manga! there are so MANY amazing cyberpunk mangas that honestly need more acknowledgement, but sadly they haven't been made into anime series which is how most people get to know most works.
Just wanted to say I really love your channel, and it's broadened the scope of anime I watch. Thanks for the great content.
This was pretty good! You missed a couple like Karas but I like you didn't put everything in there. Gives the viewer a reason to go explore for more.
Good video, Texchnolyze is easily in my top 10 television anime and Ghost in the Shell and Akira both make it for movies. I was expecting Angel Cop to receive a mention.
However, this break down is on point, I'll be sure to tweet it out.

Kind of sad the 1988 Appleseed OVA didn't make an appearance on your list, I always thought it was both better and more cyberpunk than GitS... especially if you comapre it to the GitS series.

Where is Mardock Scramble ? All the ones mentioned here have been mentioned countless times before.
ArcaneThinker Mardock was really good.
A steampunk anime video like this would be cool, i think steampunk also has a very strong impact in anime
akira was ...is always will be best cyberpunk movie..this is not just an anime...its just an event
Favorite cyberpunk anime is a tie between Akira and Ghost in the Shell. They canged... Everything.
you should try to find & watch the 1988 Appleseed OVA, so much better than the CGI reboot, and another gamechanger,
Good video. I've always been a fan of sci-fi, as a kid I read a lot of "classic SF", but in the mid 80s I discovered cyberpunk. I loved the exciting new genre. Also now, I need to go and watch a few of these... A few that previously I wouldn't have given the time of day.
WHAT IS THAT INTRO MUSIC!? AMAZING!
Where standalone complex 1 and 2 at?
Demon City Shinjuku and Demon City (lol 2 different movies) are some other great ones that weren't mentioned
- New Dominion Tank Police
- Cowboy Bebop... (maybe)
- Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01 .... (terrible anime, but the opening scene or first minute or so is good)
- Roujin Z... (maybe)
- Wonderful Days
I love Cyberpunk but the element I find missing in new works is the Noir. I miss the back alley detective plots. The foot chases and gun battles in rain soaked metropolis illuminated by artificial light and muzzle flash.
[Me wiping tears away every time someone respects Ergo Proxy]
That was great. Ghost in the Shell is my favorite cyberpunk anime.
Are you going to do a steampunk genre video? I've only seen one thus far being Steamboy and it's funny how the creator pandered to both cyberpunk fans with Akira and steampunk with Steamboy
Nice high quality video essay type episode it's like a mini documentary
Some others I like are the newly released BLAME on netflix, but also the old school, Megazone 23 which likely influenced The Matrix.
Really sad to see you gave up on creating more videos, but as you stated on your twitter: "i made videos about anime
".
And in my opinion they were bloody good.
Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed, Vexille, and many other of Oshii's works!
The sky was the color of a television tuned to a dead channel.
I do not see it in the last few months mentioned, Armitage (Poly Matrix), it is red faction meets dick's do android dream of electric sheep. So, I thought I would include an anime that questions some on the tenants of life and self-wareness.
"Battle Angel Alita" if you haven't seen it check it out.
It better be good, because that movie is going to give a lot of people their very first impression of Gunnm.
@@RokuroCarisu And good it was.
@@TuMadre1337 Absolutely!
The manga is so good
I personally en general love the cyber punk genre, so gritty in all its contenst no matter if anime, live action film or western animation
once again, read Blame!

Blame! master race
maan you seem like a really, cool, smart, dude.
Who are you, . i wanna meet the person behind this great channel
keep up the good work.
I think Ghost in the Shell (for now; only seen two items on that list ^^;) is still my favourite Entry in the genre. Add in Stand Alone Complex and you've got a fantastic world to delve into.

love all from this list exept Ergo Proxy
Genesis Survivor Gaiarth? It's got bad reviews online, but I liked the concepts. Mainly how it's like a medieval fantasy dressed as post-apocalyptic cyberpunk. Any thoughts on it?

good video but you should have talked about psycho pass and GITS:SAC. these two are fantastic.
tnx man great video.actually i am not agree with you a bout Ergo Proxy but other ting was great your review a bout akira was remarkable thanks again.and because you asked you also could mention (Battle Angel Alita) and (Armitage III).

+munky cheez Nothing to debate. I won't give you any opinion other than, you absolutely need to watch it and form your own opinion.

that was a great video !
Finally my favourite sub-genre! Sweeet.
What are your thoughts on witch hunter robin as a cyberpunk/supernatural anime?
would psycho pass count as cyberpunk?
Not really into cyberpunk but my favorite is kaiba if that counts, else gits.

Would anyone consider Big O cyberpunk? I watched it years ago so I might be fuzzy of the details but it kinda fits, right?
Being newer to the cyberpunk genre , I would say psycho pass (season 1. Have not seen season 2 or movie) and mardock scramble are 2 good examples of the new wave of cyberpunk . For an OVA, might I suggest Black Magic M-66. I guess In a way it's like The Terminator in anime form.
Have you watched mardock scramble trilogy? It's amazing and very underrated
Ghits - beboop - RIO - Ergo Proxy - Akira off course!
Ghost in the shell is one of my favorite anime movies of all time

I'd add Psycho-Pass to this list, myself. The Sybil System reigned Japan can be interesting. If only it had been more fleshed out, however. Dennou Coil looks like an interesting one, I only watched one episode and will come back to it soon.
It got to the point where I started wondering if the writers even understood what they were saying even
The main thing that didn't make sense to me is why those Proxies were necessary in the first place. Is creating a bunch of powerful robots with thematic abilities really the best way to construct and oversee settlements?
I might try giving it a second watch to make sure it makes no sense but it never happened with anything else I watched, that my final thoughts were "oh well, that was a whole lot of nothing"
cyberpunk plus anime equals my dream
I would like akira remade as a movie series or a ova
I really love Psycho Pass and its world. It also has, like GITS, some big far reaching philosophical ideas. I will have to check out Ergo Proxy!
The best video out there.
Ergo Proxy is F'ing badass I'm glad to see people like it as much as me. I always thought it would make a good video game if it stayed Uber close to the source
Sadly know all of them... this genre needs some more IPs
