  • Our world’s oceans are being flooded with trash. According to research by the World Economic Forum, 90% of the 80,000,000KG of trash in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch comes from only 10 rivers.
    Boyan Slatt, a young entrepreneur from the Netherlands started “The Ocean Cleanup '', an ambitious non-profit with the goal of eradicating our rivers and oceans of non-degradable plastic. They believe that the waste still has value and that it should be put to use by being recycled and reintroduced into the production of new goods.
    This Dutch Startup plans on tackling the 80% of plastics reaching the ocean, coming from only 1,000 rivers. To hit their target, some high-tech machinery was needed, so the Ocean Cleanup invented the river interceptor. This unit is incredibly effective at clearing waste from rivers, however, they wanted to set their sights higher, clearing the largest accumulation zone of plastic on the planet - the great pacific garbage patch.
    Over the past year, The Ocean Cleanup has been testing their ocean garbage extraction method 002, named JENNY. It works by driving 2 Maersk ships in tandem, towing a 300m floating barrier between. The barrier is held up by massive floats on top, ensuring no garbage can escape from above. The net portion measures 3 meters deep, with an opening on the bottom allowing trapped fish to evade capture. The ships move at 1.5 knots and come together once a week to empty the retention zone and organize the materials onboard one of the Maersk vessels. Once organized and packaged, the materials can be sent to their corresponding recycling facilities and made into new, sustainable goods!
    In mid-October, 2021, Boyan Slatt’s 12-week test campaign was deemed successful, achieving proof of technology. From nine test extractions, 28,659 kilograms (63,182 pounds) of plastic were removed from the ocean - with 9000 retrieved from a single haul.
    Moving forward, The ocean cleanup plans on running their series 002 JENNY, until they launch the system’s sequel, the 003. At a length of 2.5km, system 003 is expected to be 3x larger than its predecessor. The next phase involves scaling the project, with the objective of getting 10 Jennys operational as soon as possible.
    We wish The Ocean Cleanup success moving forward, taking on this insurmountable task!

    Crazy to think how much trash there must be in the ENTIRE ocean. Glad companies and individuals are tackling these issues.

    Take a bulk carrier ship and trash cleanup boat and go to Pacific garbage patch. this may take less year to clean up and may cost less.

    I commercial fished for 2 years, 1983 to 85. In those years the plastic garbage patch was the size of Texas and now it is twice the size. It took 2 days to get through this shit. Now it is twice the size. Been there done it.

    Prioritize the ocean cleanup and dont get political over exhaust from the ships! Get the 10 bits of infrastructure and rotate the ships and crews continuously. Then other centres of ocean waste can be attacked, reduced with accumulate results. Thank you for the inspiration the actual effort and the results. In 5 or 7 years a great substantive improvement would be achieved.

    As we all know, plastic waste is difficult to degrade under natural conditions, and the pollution and damage to the ecological environment are extremely serious. Therefore, I think it is very important to reduce the use of plastic products and recycle plastic waste in life. The government should also adopt relevant policies at night, and protecting the environment is the goal of global efforts.

    lol I think the problem of plastics in the ocean is a lot more worrisome than the emissions from two ships.. especially when there's ships all over the world all year long

    add a plastic pelitizer machine and plastic pyrolisis system on both ships you could have 2 floating factories on the ocean , you can produce plastic pelits to ship to other vessels on the ocean and at the same time use some to produce diesel for the ships engines and even ship oil back to shore . to clean the salt from the plastic you can have desalination system based on condensation of ocean water by boiling and store the left over salt or throw back into the ocean so basicly have a multifunctioning floating factories on the ocean, doesn't have to be big just modify what you already have and find a market for your products at a very cheap price to fuel the further cleaning up processes.

      @BryanRas Год назад

      @@colieprincess5512 what is converted into oil on sea can be used for the diesel engines and other machines to further process plastics that are taken out of the ocean , what Im trying to say or point out is a way to maximise the time and potential each time a ship reaches those plastic patches in the ocean , if you can convert part of the ocean plastic back to oil to use for fuel and other forms of lubricant or any other material to help other processies it will be able to convert ships into floating factories that massivley increase the outake of plastic out of the water, make more reusable items, increase profit and generate new jobs and possibility's making a new possitive circle until plastic is completly taken out of the ocean's.

    8 simple concept basic logic if life is not free why the hell would death be any cheaper it's not. So the question one may wonder is the spiritual cost to one's own soul and spirit for having lived and died to the lowest standards of quality for so many years now global pollution has diminished the quality of life to the point where today's people are living, dying and yielding the worst spiritual kickback that has ever been manifested since the beginning of life only getting worse. The polar opposite extreme to that is today's people should be living and dying to the highest standards of quality which would make each and every moment physically, mentally, financially and spiritually beneficial.
