Bathhouses in Ireland are called 'Gyms' and at one notorious one in Dublin, called Incognito, an elderly Priest died but it wasn't so bad as there was another Priest there at the Gym to give him last rites....lol, needless to say it couldn't be hushed up and made all the newspapers.
Your talking about this subject is to be applauded. Its a part of the culture, most men have experienced bath houses but many remain fearful. You are educating and helping people. X
Just discovered your channel and really hope you come back with more content! As gay sexologist that used to work as one of community outreach workers in bath houses offering STI testing and counselling, some of your experiences definitely resonate and make me somewhat nostalgic. Keep up the demystification, bath houses definitely have their place in gay male culture! 👏🏾🙂
I live in Los Angeles and my favorite bathhouse was Flex. Full gym, free BBQ on sundays and of course the variety of fine men. I was disappointed when they shut down the steamroom and hot tub but it was still fun. My other favorite spot was Midtowne Spa. Multiple floors and hot Latino and black men! Least favorite place was North Hollywood Spa. Rarely any action and the staff was rude however I DID hook up with a worker who was cleaning up a room. He invited me in, closed the door and gave me something to remember! Curious what these establishments will be like post covid.
Thanks for this! I had soooo many hot/friendly/funny times here in Chicago (S-works) and that is because of the staff, clientele and their all around good nature and respect for each other.
Love the information about how these businesses operated. When you itemize all of the things needed to run a bathhouse it really adds up, from chlorine for the Jacuzzi to keys, linens and a music-performance license. It would be cost prohibitive to start one up today, and as you said, the regulations and legalities would drive you nuts.
The Watergarden was awesome! It was my get away when I lived in Santa Cruz. Very friendly people all the time. And squeaky clean on top of it. Thanks also for your talk on transmen. I used to see this dude on the bus here in Chicago who I knew was transitioning and saw him once at the S-works. I thanked the cashier for letting him in. The dude stayed clothed, but was having a good time chatting. Whatever else he did, I wouldn't know nor care. We are all brothers at the baths.
Bravo for a job well done... I was impressed at how you presented accurate information while also dealing with such a sensitive subject... reminded me of my first experience as a "newbie" in the 1980's, I was curious and also terrified.. but wanted to know what to expect inside. While the plethora of hook-up apps have definitely changed things (I like to refer as "ordering-in") however I believe Bathhouses and Saunas are still relevant today since they provide much needed sanitary and clean, safe spaces for men to enjoy meeting like-minded men descretely, without fear of judgement or persection.
I don't know if bathhouses still have entertainment, but during the 70s I saw Waylon Flowers and Madame, and also the famous fan dancer Sally Rand at Man's Country in Chicago. Bette Midler was supposed to have gotten her start at the Continental Baths in NYC.
Please continueeee making videooos! I'm from a small town in Mexico, i don't think there is one in my city and i've always wanted to know and experience all of this

First of All. I feel like I’ve seen you somehow but I’ve never been to any clubs or bathhouses. Idk if its that OR I would like to have had seen you because I wouldn’t mind one of those “weekends” 😂😏
@@KodaVoss gonna add this to the list of questions. I didn’t mention it because it’s really not that important if you do. Most guys give us a dollar or the change at best. Usually guys tip if they want to be bumped ahead of the line or something. Lots of times tho, guys tip just to be nice guys.
I will NEVER take my friend to the baths again ,no matter how much he begs...he never wants to stay more than 20min (it takes at least an hour to get there) anything over 15 min he considers "wasting his whole day" He doesn't like just walking around doing nothing, but will drag you around a building supply store just browsing for 2-3 hours
Thanks for putting in the trans question! I was trying to go for the first time back in Feb and asked fetlife but didn't get any trans specific advice or reflections. hopefully there will be more opportunities in the future. Thanks!
You’re welcome! It’s really going to depend on the club. You could always call ahead and ask! Clubs in the west coast are usually pretty open about trans guests though.

Just found your first video, and now I'm a subscriber. But I have a question--was I supposed to be tipping employees at bathhouses? I swear I never knew this. Could you give some examples of what I should be tipping for the next time I'm able to go to one? I really appreciate it.
Thanks for the follow! Don’t stress about the tipping thing. Every place I’ve been to does accept them but most guys don’t anyway and that’s okay too. I usually leave a dollar or two at the front desk and another in the room after I check out. I’ll admit that when I was cashiering and guys would give me a little more than that I’d usually bump them up on the waiting list or get them better rooms. Shhh... 🤫
@@LockerNinety I used to go to a place in south Florida when I was on vacation. Every time, on the last day of my stay, I would buy a huge box of gourmet cookies from a local bakery and leave them with the staff to share. I’m curious whether public health discourse is evolving, or rather should evolve, to reflect the impact of PrEP and other modes of prevention and treatment in sexual health. I’ve noticed that language around “unprotected sex” implied that only barriers such as condoms count as “protection” when PrEP confers not only on form of protection, but it also requires regular STI testing and provider visits to its users, usually. There’s also treatment as prevention that confers a level of protection for those living with HIV. I guess as a millennial who’s interested in studying the intersection of LGBTQ health disparities and HIV and somewhat sexual health, I find that pushing the boundaries of what we conceive as safer sex calls for a more critical examination of social practices that folks employ within online and then offline spaces as a result of interacting with each other and non human objects like knowledge, communication channels, and material objects that are involved in such events. :)
Like I mentioned in the first video, I’m not a sexual health expert. I have my own theories and opinions that I rather not talk about openly on this channel because they’re not based on anything more than speculation. I myself have a LOT of questions about the impact of PrEP on gay culture as a whole let alone how it has effected bathhouses. My goal is to eventually voice these questions (and some that the community might have) to a professional who can provide statistics and facts... someday!!
@@LockerNinety no worries at all!! What you’ve put out in your video so far reflect my own thinking and experiences in general. I wasn’t targeting you, haha. I never went to a bathhouse. I came of age in the early 1980s and they were all being shut down because of AIDS. I guess they were stigmatized in my mind as places where one got AIDS. And since I didn't want to die I never went to one after they all reopened.
Hey Paolo, Love this project! A question: Do bathhouses usually have loud music playing? I ask because I have a hearing disorder which makes really loud pumping music very uncomfortable Thanks W
It depends on the place! Some turn the music up during events and I’ve been to others that turn the music down after a certain time. Usually ones around neighborhoods.
If you have someone even after telling them NO you are not interested and he will not leave you alone. Other thn leaving the venue, what other options due I have?
I heard there was a straight bath house in San Francisco. The first Tales of the City may have had an episode covering that. PBS I believe, not Showtime or whatever pay cable. A character playing a woman there wanted sex with a straight man who was not a Kinsey 0. He thought his fooling around at camp once with another boy would get him a ticket to her sugar walls. No, said she. Plato's Retreat in NYC was a sex club catering to straight people. As one woman said, the snack meat was baloney/bologna. What was she looking for French Dips with Homemade Au Jus?!
I am really trying to figure out if live sex shows are legal in the US. Me being a woman that loves to watch hot guys go at it. I would love to have a spectator event
